Learning to Lay Down Our Defenses

⁶You make what you defend against, and by your own defense against it is it real and inescapable. ⁷Lay down your arms, and only then do you perceive it false.

The choice you make today is certain. ²For you look for the last time upon this bit of carven stone you made, and call it god no longer. …⁶And you return to a new world, unburdened by its weight; beheld not in its sightless eyes, but in the vision that your choice restored to you.

Now do your eyes belong to Christ, and He looks through them. ²Now your voice belongs to God and echoes His. ³And now your heart remains at peace forever.

Father, we are like You. ²No cruelty abides in us, for there is none in You. ³Your peace is ours. ⁴And we bless the world with what we have received from You alone. ⁵We choose again, and make our choice for all our brothers, knowing they are one with us. ⁶We bring them Your salvation as we have received it now. ⁷And we give thanks for them who render us complete. ⁸In them we see Your glory, and in them we find our peace. ⁹Holy are we because Your Holiness has set us free. ¹⁰And we give thanks. ¹¹Amen. The ego has subtle ways of defending its world. Frustration, irritation, impatience have the same effect as intense rage. They all depend on belief that we are separate from the “cause” of these emotions.

We are called today to lay down our defenses. This starts with willingness to step back from our defenses and ask the Holy Spirit to help us let them go. With our willingness to be helped, we are given Christ’s vision which shows us the reality of Love’s oneness and the unreality of perceived differences.

With His help, we recognize the one Self we share as God’s Son. We accept His sure correction that helps us remember that we remain in the changelessness of God’s Love.

Letting the Holy Spirit Judge on Our Behalf

⁵It is not our part to judge our worth, nor can we know what role is best for us; what we can do within a larger plan we cannot see in its entirety. ⁶Our part is cast in Heaven, not in hell.

Whatever your appointed role may be, it was selected by the Voice for God, Whose function is to speak for you as well. ²Seeing your strengths exactly as they are, and equally aware of where they can be best applied, for what, to whom and when, He chooses and accepts your part for you.

It is through His ability to hear one Voice which is His Own that you become aware at last there is one Voice in you. ²And that one Voice appoints your function, and relays it to you, giving you the strength to understand it, do what it entails, and to succeed in everything you do that is related to it. ³God has joined His Son in this, and thus His Son becomes His messenger of unity with Him.

²It is this Voice which speaks of laws the world does not obey; which promises salvation from all sin, with guilt abolished in the mind that God created sinless. ³Now this mind becomes aware again of Who created it, and of His lasting union with itself. ⁴So is its Self the one reality in which its will and that of God are joined. Judgment is a principle tool in the ego’s bag of tricks. It is used to reinforce beliefs that separation is real. It is also used to disown guilt and project it. The ego does not take responsibility for the illusions it makes. It realizes that if the source of guilt and fear were recognized, it would quickly be dismissed as meaningless because it is not real.

Today we are called to turn over all judgment to the Holy Spirit. Its judgments are simple and definitive. It simply recognizes what is real and dismisses the unreal. When we let the Holy Spirit judge all things on our behalf, we will learn to see the unity of Love that is everywhere and let illusions of separation be dispelled. This is our journey of awakening to Love.

Remembering What We Are

You are one Self, united and secure in light and joy and peace. ²You are God’s Son, one Self, with one Creator and one goal; to bring awareness of this oneness to all minds, that true creation may extend the allness and the unity of God. ³You are one Self, complete and healed and whole, with power to lift the veil of darkness from the world, and let the light in you come through to teach the world the truth about yourself.

You are one Self, in perfect harmony with all there is, and all that there will be. ²You are one Self, the holy Son of God, united with your brothers in that Self; united with your Father in His Will. ³Feel this one Self in you, and let It shine away all your illusions and your doubts. ⁴This is your Self, the Son of God Himself, sinless as Its Creator, with His strength within you and His Love forever yours. ⁵You are one Self, and it is given you to feel this Self within you, and to cast all your illusions out of the one Mind that is this Self, the holy truth in you.”

²To everyone you meet today, be sure to give the promise of today’s idea and tell him this:

³You are one Self with me, united with our Creator in this Self. ⁴I honor you because of What I am, and What He is, Who loves us both as One. (A Course in Miracles, W-95.12:1–13:5;15:2-4. See also ACIM Lesson 95 Insights.)

Here is a great summary that defines our true Self. It is worth reading this several times. Let it soak into your awareness. Feel the peace and joy that comes with it. It reminds us of What we are in truth.

As you soak in the feeling of this one Self, united with our Creator, carry this feeling with you through the day. As you think about or look upon a brother, remind yourself by telling him mentally that together we are one Self, the holy Son of God, joined in His perfect Love.

Accepting God’s Will as Ours

There is no will but God’s.

The idea for today can be regarded as the central thought toward which all our exercises are directed. ²God’s is the only Will. ³When you have recognized this, you have recognized that your will is His. ⁴The belief that conflict is possible has gone. ⁵Peace has replaced the strange idea that you are torn by conflicting goals. ⁶As an expression of the Will of God, you have no goal but His.

There is great peace in today’s idea…. ²The idea itself is wholly true. ³Therefore it cannot give rise to illusions. ⁴Without illusions conflict is impossible.”

²There is no will but God’s. ³I cannot be in conflict.

⁶Nothing can disturb me. ⁷My will is God’s.
⁸My will and God’s are one.
⁹God wills peace for His Son.

Joy characterizes peace. ²By this experience [of joy] will you recognize that you have reached it. (A Course in Miracles, W-74.1:1–2:4;3:2–9;6:1–2. See also ACIM Lesson 74 Insights.)

The ego is terrified of God’s Will. Because the ego is the idea of sacrifice, which it demands of others for it to have more, It tells us God demands sacrifice of us. This is classic ego projection.

In truth, God’s Will for us, His extension, is perfect happiness and peace. We share His Will because we are one with what He is. The ego can only offer us conflict, unhappiness and fear. It tries to convince us that the specialness it offers is worth the price. Yet can conflict be worth more than peace? Can a sense of deep loss and sadness be worth more than indescribable joy?

Today we are practicing recognizing the Will we share with God. The affirmations help us recognize the effect of accepting our will as the same as His. Today we move toward recognizing that joy and peace abide in us.

Letting Love Bless the World Through Us

A major learning goal this course has set is to reverse your view of giving, so you can receive. ²For giving has become a source of fear, and so you would avoid the only means by which you can receive. ³Accept God’s peace and joy, and you will learn a different way of looking at a gift. ⁴God’s gifts will never lessen when they are given away. ⁵They but increase thereby.

As Heaven’s peace and joy intensify when you accept them as God’s gift to you, so does the joy of your Creator grow when you accept His joy and peace as yours. ²True giving is creation. ³It extends the limitless to the unlimited, eternity to timelessness, and love unto itself. ⁴It adds to all that is complete already, not in simple terms of adding more, for that implies that it was less before. ⁵It adds by letting what cannot contain itself fulfill its aim of giving everything it has away, securing it forever for itself.

Our true Self is eternal Love. Its nature is to eternally extend Itself. It finds joy in giving of Itself. Its peace comes from Its changelessness.

While we believe Love can be limited, we do not experience Love. But as we forgive our belief in limitation and give the Love we receive, joy is inevitable. As we accept the Love we are, we rest in peace.

Today is an opportunity to let Love show us the universe of Love. As we willingly extend Love, we experience Its blessing. We bless ourselves as we bless the world.

Seeing the Love in Which We Live

God is my life. I have no life but His.

I was mistaken when I thought I lived apart from God, a separate entity that moved in isolation, unattached, and housed within a body. ²Now I know my life is God’s, I have no other home, and I do not exist apart from Him. ³He has no Thoughts that are not part of me, and I have none but those which are of Him.

Our Father, let us see the face of Christ instead of our mistakes. ²For we who are Your holy Son are sinless. ³We would look upon our sinlessness, for guilt proclaims that we are not Your Son. ⁴And we would not forget You longer. ⁵We are lonely here, and long for Heaven, where we are at home. ⁶Today we would return. ⁷Our Name is Yours, and we acknowledge that we are Your Son. Our judgments make a veil that hides the face of Christ from our awareness. Judgments are the ego’s way of maintaining a belief that separation is real. Yet when we are willing to forgive our judgments, we see the innocence in every brother and ourselves. In truth, we live in God’s innocence. His Love is our Home.

Today we call upon the Love within us to guide our vision. Love always shows us Itself in everything and everyone. Nothing else is real. We are grateful that this is our Home.

Remembering the Will We Share with God

²You want to accept God’s plan because you share in it. ³You have no will that can really oppose it, and you do not want to do so. ⁴Salvation is for you. ⁵Above all else, you want the freedom to remember Who you really are. ⁶Today it is the ego that stands powerless before your will. ⁷Your will is free, and nothing can prevail against it.

…God’s plan for salvation, and only His, is wholly in accord with your will. ²It is not the purpose of an alien power, thrust upon you unwillingly. ³It is the one purpose here on which you and your Father are in perfect accord. ⁴You will succeed today, the time appointed for the release of the Son of God from hell and from all idle wishes. ⁵His will is now restored to his awareness. ⁶He is willing this very day to look upon the light in him and be saved.

…tell yourself with gentle firmness and quiet certainty:

²I will there be light. ³Let me behold the light that reflects God’s Will and mine.

⁴Then let your will assert itself, joined with the power of God and united with your Self. (A Course in Miracles, W-73.7:2-7;9;10:1-4. See also ACIM Lesson 73 Insights.)

Willing there be Light does not mean we have to force Light to be present. It means accepting our only will, which we share with God. The Light is always there. We are only unaware of It when we deny the Love that created us.

With this acceptance we remember the peace and joy that is our natural habitat. Today we choose to accept our will and know that we remain as God created us.
