Remembering Our Eternal Innocence

Can you imagine what it means to have no cares, no worries, no anxieties, but merely to be perfectly calm and quiet all the time? Yet that is what time is for; to learn just that and nothing more. God’s Teacher cannot be satisfied with His teaching until it constitutes all your learning. He has not fulfilled His teaching function until you have become such a consistent learner that you learn only of Him. When this has happened, you will no longer need a teacher or time in which to learn.

Time is your friend, if you leave it to the Holy Spirit to use. He needs but very little to restore God’s whole power to you. He Who transcends time for you understands what time is for. Holiness lies not in time, but in eternity. (A Course in Miracles T-15.I.1;15:1-4)

As we are willing to give time to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit leads us past the stories found in time to the changeless peace, Love and joy that is our eternal Reality in Love. In truth we are all the same eternal Spirit of Love. Love created us like Itself. In truth, we are not separate from Love, but Love’s eternal extension.

Our eternal beingness as Love is remembered as we are willing to give all the stories found in time to the Holy Spirit. His Light of truth undoes all the fearful stories of separation and guilt, and returns us to remembering the eternal innocence of our one Identity. As we are willing to give time to the Holy Spirit, awareness of peace replaces the worries, anxieties and conflicts found in the ego’s use of time. All this returns to us as we are willing to remember the eternal truth about ourselves and everyone.

Being a Friend to the World

How can we be a true Friend? We let Holy Spirit guide our perceptions so that we perceive only the truth in our brothers. We see no brother as a body, but only God’s loving extension. If we become distracted by an appearance in the world, we let the Holy Spirit gently correct our misperception so that once again we see past the form to the truth of Love. This is true honesty. A true friend is always honest with his brother. To see a brother as a body is dishonest because it is accepting a deception in place of the truth of our oneness in Love.

As we walk through this day our practice is to let the Holy Spirit show us the truth behind all appearances. And if we get caught up in reacting to appearances, we quickly turn to the Voice for God within for His gentle correction. This is how we will be a Friend to the world.

Remembering We Walk with God

Forget not once this journey is begun the end is certain. Doubt along the way will come and go and go to come again. Yet is the ending sure. No one can fail to do what God appointed him to do. When you forget, remember that you walk with Him and with His Word upon your heart. Who could despair when hope like this is his? Illusions of despair may seem to come, but learn how not to be deceived by them. Behind each one there is reality and there is God. Why would you wait for this and trade it for illusions, when His Love is but an instant farther on the road where all illusions end? The end is sure and guaranteed by God. Who stands before a lifeless image when a step away the Holy of the Holies opens up an ancient door that leads beyond the world? (A Course in Miracles C-Epilogue.1)

It is comforting to be reminded that we walk with God, no matter how much we may get wrapped up in the images of the world. We always remain united with our Creator, whether we are aware of it or not. The Holy Spirit is ever-present in our minds, ready to bring us back to this awareness, when we are willing.

Sometimes it takes coming to a painful turning point for us to become willing. But the Course is offering us a training program to help us with our willingness. Awakening will happen of itself when there is willingness to accept a new vision. Today we will practice opening to Holy Spirit’s vision by frequently stepping back and welcoming peace. In peace we are open to receive Holy Spirit’s gift of vision.

Love Is the World’s Only Reality

If you would look upon love, which is the world’s reality, how could you do better than to recognize, in every defense against it, the underlying appeal for it? And how could you better learn of its reality than by answering the appeal for it by giving it? The Holy Spirit’s interpretation of fear does dispel it, for the awareness of truth cannot be denied. Thus does the Holy Spirit replace fear with love and translate error into truth. And thus will you learn of Him how to replace your dream of separation with the fact of unity. For the separation is only the denial of union, and correctly interpreted, attests to your eternal knowledge that union is true. (A Course in Miracles T-12.I.10)

We are reminded here that there is only Love or a call for Love. Today’s practice is to recognize all calls for Love by giving only Love. We do this by letting the Holy Spirit be our Interpreter in every moment. As we consistently pay attention to Holy Spirit’s interpretation of everything we think we see or experience, we are returned to the truth of our oneness in Love. We remember that only union is true.

Letting Truth In

All that is asked of you is to make room for truth. You are not asked to make or do what lies beyond your understanding. All you are asked to do is let it in; only to stop your interference with what will happen of itself; simply to recognize again the presence of what you thought you gave away.

Be willing, for an instant, to leave your altars free of what you placed upon them, and what is really there you cannot fail to see. The holy instant is not an instant of creation, but of recognition. For recognition comes of vision and suspended judgment. Then only it is possible to look within and see what must be there, plainly in sight, and wholly independent of inference and judgment. Undoing is not your task, but it is up to you to welcome it or not. Faith and desire go hand in hand, for everyone believes in what he wants. (A Course in Miracles T-21.II.7:6-8;8)

Our insistence on believing what the body’s senses show us is real blocks awareness of the truth. Being an illusion, the body is incapable of recognizing truth. When we believe the body is real, we are believing in a false self-image. The Course is teaching us to redirect our attention to the Holy Spirit in our minds.

As we are willing to accept His vision, we see past all appearances in the world to the truth that only Love is real. It is this willingness to suspend judgment on our own and to be open to Holy Spirit’s lead that lets the truth in. Our practice today is to frequently pause, suspend our judgment and open to Holy Spirit’s inspiration.

Seeing Past the Dream to Innocence

Let us be still an instant, and forget all things we ever learned, all thoughts we had, and every preconception that we hold of what things mean and what their purpose is. Let us remember not our own ideas of what the world is for. We do not know. Let every image held of everyone be loosened from our minds and be swept away.

Be innocent of judgment, unaware of any thoughts of evil or of good that ever crossed your mind of anyone. Now do you know him not. But you are free to learn of him, and learn of him anew. Now is he born again to you, and you are born again to him, without the past that sentenced him to die, and you with him. Now is he free to live as you are free, because an ancient learning passed away, and left a place for truth to be reborn.” (A Course in Miracles T-31.I.12-13)

We awaken as we are willing to open to the truth that everyone is the same eternal Spirit of Love that we are. We open to the truth that nothing has happened to change God’s one holy Son. We are willing to look past the stories of time and distance to the eternal essence of Love That is in everyone see.

The world was made by the false mind to project guilt outside of us and see guilt in an outside world. Because we chose to believe in separation, guilt came with it. We can’t stand the guilt, so the ego plan is to see it in others, thus relieving the pain. This ego solution never works. Instead it binds us to the hell that comes with belief in separation.

The Holy Spirit brings a new purpose to our seeing. The Holy Spirit teaches us to see past the stories of separation to the truth of our eternal innocence as changeless Spirit. As we practice hour by hour to see as the Holy Spirit sees, we free ourselves from the ego’s prison house. Instead of seeing guilt, we see only eternal innocence. We let ourselves be reminded that the ego stories could never be real. With willingness we now see past the stories of guilt to the changeless Love that is there eternally. Here we find peace. Here we find the joy and happiness of our eternal Reality.

In Truth, We Rest in God

We ask for rest today, and quietness unshaken by the world’s appearances. We ask for peace and stillness, in the midst of all the turmoil born of clashing dreams. We ask for safety and for happiness, although we seem to look on danger and on sorrow. And we have the thought that will answer our asking with what we request.

“I rest in God.” This thought will bring to you the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and the safety and the happiness you seek. “I rest in God.” This thought has power to wake the sleeping truth in you, whose vision sees beyond appearances to that same truth in everyone and everything there is.” (A Course in Miracles W pI.109.1;2:1-4)

As we willingly go into that inner place of quiet and peace, all thoughts of conflict disappear… We see that every brother resides in God’s Light with us… We know this is our Home, where we live in perfect safety and eternal Love… The peace, gentleness and happiness we feel we extend to the world… We receive the truth and extend the truth that the whole Sonship rests in God eternally… And we give thanks…

The thought, “I rest in God,” is a thought of peace, for God is peace. It is a thought that reminds us of our natural state. It is a thought that redirects our attention from a world of separation, with its conflict and guilt, to our unity in God. These four simple words have power to heal our minds of all illusions. Our practice today is to remind ourselves frequently that we rest in God and allow time to experience this rest.
