Seeing Our True Self in Every Brother

I need but call and You will answer me.

I am not asked to take salvation on the basis of an unsupported faith. ²For God has promised He will hear my call, and answer me Himself. ³Let me but learn from my experience that this is true, and faith in Him must surely come to me. ⁴This is the faith that will endure, and take me farther and still farther on the road that leads to Him. ⁵For thus I will be sure that He has not abandoned me and loves me still, awaiting but my call to give me all the help I need to come to Him.

Father, I thank You that Your promises will never fail in my experience, if I but test them out. ²Let me attempt therefore to try them, and to judge them not. ³Your Word is one with You. ⁴You give the means whereby conviction comes, and surety of Your abiding Love is gained at last. In our Creation, God promised that we would be forever united one with Him and share all His attributes. His peace, His Love and His joy are ours, for God holds nothing back. Being limitless, He cannot conceive of limitation.

But we have chosen to identify with the ego, the “god” of limitation. The only way to seem to achieve specialness is to limit everything perceived to some form that separates and makes different. This is the world we experience while we believe we are a body and accept the ego’s beliefs about reality. This misidentification makes us unaware of the limitless Self God created as His Son.

But we can choose differently. We may have hidden our true Identity beneath layers of beliefs that support the quest for specialness, but we cannot obliterate Reality. We can hide from It but we cannot change It. It is time to come out of hiding. Beneath all the striving in the world is our deep and abiding desire to be Love, to remember our true Self.

We call upon God’s Voice to help us see the truth beyond the ego’s false images. We truly desire to see the Love that is the truth in our brothers, for they but reflect the truth of What we are.

Forgiveness Reveals Love’s Innocence

My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face.

I ask Your blessing on my sight today. ²It is the means which You have chosen to become the way to show me my mistakes, and look beyond them. ³It is given me to find a new perception through the Guide You gave to me, and through His lessons to surpass perception and return to truth. ⁴I ask for the illusion which transcends all those I made. ⁵Today I choose to see a world forgiven, in which everyone shows me the face of Christ, and teaches me that what I look upon belongs to me; that nothing is, except Your holy Son.

Today our sight is blessed indeed. ²We share one vision, as we look upon the face of Him Whose Self is ours. ³We are one because of Him Who is the Son of God; of Him Who is our own Identity. (A Course in Miracles, W-269. See also ACIM Lesson 269 Insights.)

Christ’s face is a symbol of forgiveness. To see the face of Christ in anyone is to see him forgiven of our illusions of separation. This vision sees only the innocence of God’s Love. Love does not need forgiveness.

But in this world, we need the illusion of forgiveness to let go of the illusions that make our brother appear different and separate. When we except nothing from our forgiveness, it is no longer needed. We have accepted the truth that only Love is real.

This is our only purpose in the world: To let go of all beliefs in separation and awaken to the eternal, changeless Love in which we live.

The Choice to Accept the Power of Love

This is the only thing that you need do for vision, happiness, release from pain and the complete escape from sin, all to be given you. ²Say only this, but mean it with no reservations, for here the power of salvation lies:

³I am responsible for what I see.
⁴I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide
upon the goal I would achieve.
⁵And everything that seems to happen to me
I ask for, and receive as I have asked.

⁶Deceive yourself no longer that you are helpless in the face of what is done to you. ⁷Acknowledge but that you have been mistaken, and all effects of your mistakes will disappear.

It is impossible the Son of God be merely driven by events outside of him. ²It is impossible that happenings that come to him were not his choice. ³His power of decision is the determiner of every situation in which he seems to find himself by chance or accident. ⁴No accident nor chance is possible within the universe as God created it, outside of which is nothing. ⁵Suffer, and you decided sin was your goal. ⁶Be happy, and you gave the power of decision to Him Who must decide for God for you. The choice to identify with the ego is the choice to be powerless. It is the choice to be a victim of the world we see. And ultimately it is the choice for death. The ego is not our friend. It wants us dead as the final “proof” that separation is real.

Just as the ego is a choice, we still have the choice to remember our true Self. Because the ego is not real, it cannot block us forever from remembering the truth. Only our choice keeps the ego in charge.

When we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide for Its interpretation of every perception, the ego is dispelled. Just as turning on a light in a dark room dispels the darkness, choosing the Holy Spirit as our Guide enlightens our mind and dispels the ego’s denial of Love. We are free to choose Love today, in this instant. Love is our eternal Life.

Accepting Love’s Oneness

All fear is past and only love is here.

All fear is past, because its source is gone, and all its thoughts gone with it. ²Love remains the only present state, whose Source is here forever and forever. ³Can the world seem bright and clear and safe and welcoming, with all my past mistakes oppressing it, and showing me distorted forms of fear? ⁴Yet in the present, love is obvious, and its effects apparent. ⁵All the world shines in reflection of its holy light, and I perceive a world forgiven at last.

Father, let not Your holy world escape my sight today. ²Nor let my ears be deaf to all the hymns of gratitude the world is singing underneath the sounds of fear. ³There is a real world which the present holds safe from all past mistakes. ⁴And I would see only this world before my eyes today. The ego would not seem to exist without “memories” of the past. It uses the past to justify guilt, which is essential to maintain the appearance of separation. Judgment depends upon belief in differences.

Yet Love is universal and one. It is the same everywhere, always, never changing. The certainty of Love is our refuge from the ego’s fear and guilt. We can count on it always being the same. We need only accept this gift our Creator gave us without reservation.

This Love unites us with every brother in our Source. We are at Home in Love and nowhere else. Nothing else exists in truth. We can relax into Love’s peace. We can joyously celebrate our unity in the happy, eternal extension of Love. Now is the time to accept the Love we are.

In Peace We Hear God’s Voice

If you will lay aside the ego’s voice, however loudly it may seem to call; if you will not accept its petty gifts that give you nothing that you really want; if you will listen with an open mind, that has not told you what salvation is; then you will hear the mighty Voice of truth, quiet in power, strong in stillness, and completely certain in Its messages.

Listen, and hear your Father speak to you through His appointed Voice, which silences the thunder of the meaningless, and shows the way to peace to those who cannot see. ²Be still today and listen to the truth.

Be not afraid today to circumvent the voices of the world. ²Walk lightly past their meaningless persuasion. ³Hear them not. ⁴Be still today and listen to the truth. ⁵Go past all things which do not speak of Him Who holds your happiness within His Hand, held out to you in welcome and in love. ⁶Hear only Him today, and do not wait to reach Him longer. ⁷Hear one Voice today.

…reinforce your choice to hear and to receive the Word by this reminder, given to yourself as often as is possible today:

³Let me be still and listen to the truth.
⁴I am the messenger of God today, my voice is His,

We have trained ourselves to listen to a voice that always lies to us. It denies the truth that only Love is real. But we have convinced ourselves that the ego’s voice is real because it offers us a substitute world that seems to make us special.

But though the ego speaks first and loudly, the Holy Spirit’s Voice remains in our mind. This Voice is heard when we quiet our mind and accept the peace that dwells within us. Peace is the gateway that leads us past the ego’s substitute world.

In peace God’s Voice speaks only the truth to us. It teaches us that only Love is real and shows us how to recognize Love’s presence. When we feel loveless, lonely and afraid, He shows us the Love that remains untouched by the shadow of the ego’s denial.

Today we frequently pause to remind ourselves that only Love is real and everyone is Love in truth. As we accept this fact, we become messengers of Love in the world.

Remembering Our True Identity

…once you understand it is impossible that you be hurt except by your own thoughts, the fear of God must disappear. ⁴You cannot then believe that fear is caused without.

²If it can but be you you crucify, you did not hurt the world, and need not fear its vengeance and pursuit. ³Nor need you hide in terror from the deadly fear of God projection hides behind. ⁴The thing you dread the most is your salvation. ⁵You are strong, and it is strength you want. ⁶And you are free, and glad of freedom.

²When you realize, once and for all, that it is you you fear, the mind perceives itself as split. ³And this had been concealed while you believed attack could be directed outward, and returned from outside to within.

²Yet in this instant is the time as well in which salvation comes. ³For fear of God has disappeared. ⁴And you can call on Him to save you from illusions by His Love, calling Him Father and yourself His Son. ⁵Pray that the instant may be soon,—today. ⁶Step back from fear, and make advance to love.

The ego is the quest for specialness, which is the denial of God’s changeless Love. Thus the ego is an attack on the Love that is our true Identity. Believing it has attacked God, the ego is constantly in fear which it projects upon the world. Everything it perceives either supports its belief in its specialness or threatens it. And the biggest threat of all is God, for the ego perceives Love as an attack on its unique identity. The unity of Love and individuality of the special cannot coexist.

We are learning that we are not the ego. We remain Love as Love created us. The changelessness of Love is Its strength. It sees no opposition, for only Love is real.

Love is our true Identity. It unites us with every brother and our Creator. We rest in the strength of Love, confident that we are safe. We find joy in extending the Love that created us and creates with us as we extend It to the world. No longer do we try to claim a little piece of Love for ourselves alone. We rejoice in the realization that Love is all there is.

The Path That Leads to Love

³Learn now, without despair, there is no hope of answer in the world. ⁴But do not judge the lesson that is but begun with this. …⁸For from this lowest point will learning lead to heights of happiness, in which you see the purpose of the lesson shining clear, and perfectly within your learning grasp.

Who would be willing to be turned away from all the roadways of the world, unless he understood their real futility?

The learning that the world can offer but one choice, no matter what its form may be, is the beginning of acceptance that there is a real alternative instead.

There is a choice that you have power to make when you have seen the real alternatives. …³This course attempts to teach no more than that the power of decision cannot lie in choosing different forms of what is still the same illusion and the same mistake.

Forgive yourself your madness, and forget all senseless journeys and all goal-less aims. ²They have no meaning. ³You can not escape from what you are. ⁴For God is merciful, and did not let His Son abandon Him. ⁵For what He is be thankful, for in that is your escape from madness and from death. ⁶Nowhere but where He is can you be found. ⁷There is no path that does not lead to Him. We are all searching for love and happiness while we believe we want specialness. The wish for specialness denies the oneness of God’s Love. Thus the search for specialness will never bring us what we truly desire. Eventually we all must come to the point of realizing there must be better way.

What we are truly seeking we already have but do not realize it because it is hidden behind the wish for specialness. But at the turning point of realizing there must be better way, we have reached a point of willingness to learn what it is. Now we are willing to seek the answer where it can be found.

We have been given the Holy Spirit to teach us that the Love we seek is What we are. In truth, we are the answer to What we seek. We are Love and nothing else. We share God’s joy in the eternal extension of Love. Our willingness to accept Help is the path of return to Love.
