The Blessing of Welcoming Peace

The Holy Spirit is the Mediator between the interpretations of the ego and the knowledge of the spirit. ²His ability to deal with symbols enables Him to work with the ego’s beliefs in its own language. ³His ability to look beyond symbols into eternity enables Him to understand the laws of God, for which He speaks. ⁴He can therefore perform the function of reinterpreting what the ego makes, not by destruction but by understanding. ⁵Understanding is light, and light leads to knowledge. ⁶The Holy Spirit is in light because He is in you who are light, but you yourself do not know this. ⁷It is therefore the task of the Holy Spirit to reinterpret you on behalf of God.

You cannot understand yourself alone. ²This is because you have no meaning apart from your rightful place in the Sonship, and the rightful place of the Sonship is God. ³This is your life, your eternity and your Self. ⁴It is of this that the Holy Spirit reminds you. ⁵It is this that the Holy Spirit sees. ⁶This vision frightens the ego because it is so calm. ⁷Peace is the ego’s greatest enemy because, according to its interpretation of reality, war is the guarantee of its survival. ⁸The ego becomes strong in strife. ⁹If you believe there is strife you will react viciously, because the idea of danger has entered your mind. ¹⁰The idea itself is an appeal to the ego. ¹¹The Holy Spirit is as vigilant as the ego to the call of danger, opposing it with His strength just as the ego welcomes it. ¹²The Holy Spirit counters this welcome by welcoming peace. ¹³Eternity and peace are as closely related as are time and war. Whenever we see conflict, we have put the ego in charge of our mind. The ego is constantly on the lookout for differences. By definition, a difference must conflict with what is around it. This keeps the ego satisfied, because without differences, the ego would cease to seem to exist. Because conflict keeps the ego in place, the antidote to the ego is peace.

The Holy Spirit welcomes peace because It welcomes the condition in which God and His Son dwell. The more we focus on welcoming peace in our mind, the more we accept the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our thoughts and actions.

Today we choose to step back and welcome peace in our mind. Here is where we remember the Self God created as His Son. In that recognition, we see every brother as one with this Self.

Awakening to the Certainty of Love

My only function is the one God gave me.

The idea for today reaffirms your commitment to salvation. ²It also reminds you that you have no function other than that. ³Both these thoughts are obviously necessary for a total commitment. ⁴Salvation cannot be the only purpose you hold while you still cherish others. ⁵The full acceptance of salvation as your only function necessarily entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself.

³This is the only way in which you can find peace of mind.

²Today’s idea offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. ³It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. ⁴It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began. In this dream of limitation, where we seem to dwell in a body, limited in time and space, our only function is to let go of the cause of this limiting dream. Only our belief that we are separate prevents us from knowing the freedom of being and extending the Love we are.

In our natural state, we dwell in perfect peace and share God’s joy of giving and receiving Love. Today we choose to be vigilant for Love. We do this by recognizing any disturbance to our peace of mind, any fear or any guilt, and asking the Holy Spirit to let it go.

He will show us the certainty of Love beyond the images that bring fear and guilt into our mind. As we let Him teach us that we are Love and nothing else, we fulfill our function. We release the world from all we thought it was. We awaken to our Home in God’s Love.

Welcoming God’s Loving Embrace

I feel the Love of God within me now.

This is the world the Love of God reveals. ²It is so different from the world you see through darkened eyes of malice and of fear, that one belies the other. ³Only one can be perceived at all. ⁴The other one is wholly meaningless. ⁵A world in which forgiveness shines on everything, and peace offers its gentle light to everyone, is inconceivable to those who see a world of hatred rising from attack, poised to avenge, to murder and destroy.

Yet is the world of hatred equally unseen and inconceivable to those who feel God’s Love in them. ²Their world reflects the quietness and peace that shines in them; the gentleness and innocence they see surrounding them; the joy with which they look out from the endless wells of joy within. ³What they have felt in them they look upon, and see its sure reflection everywhere.

⁵If you feel the Love of God within you, you will look out on a world of mercy and of love. (W-189.3–4;5:5)

The Love of God is in us now. But while we identify with the ego, which is the denial of Love, we don’t feel Love’s presence. Denial of Love leads to hatred, fear and attack. This is because the substitute, loveless images the ego makes must be defended to be maintained.

To feel the Love of God, we simply have to stop denying Its presence. This is the undoing forgiveness offers. Forgiveness dispels the denial of Love and makes way for Love’s Light to shine upon our world. The dark shadows of denial are replaced with the warm, welcoming embrace of God’s Love everywhere, always.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to help us release our mistaken perceptions and beliefs. As we let them go, the eternal gift of God’s Love is welcomed.

Remembering to Let Love Be

I have already chosen what You will.

Father, I thought I wandered from Your Will, defied it, broke its laws, and interposed a second will more powerful than Yours. ²Yet what I am in truth is but Your Will, extended and extending. ³This am I, and this will never change. ⁴As You are One, so am I one with You. ⁵And this I chose in my creation, where my will became forever one with Yours. ⁶That choice was made for all eternity. ⁷It cannot change, and be in opposition to itself. ⁸Father, my will is Yours. ⁹And I am safe, untroubled and serene, in endless joy, because it is Your Will that it be so.

Today we will accept our union with each other and our Source. ²We have no will apart from His, and all of us are one because His Will is shared by all of us. ³Through it we recognize that we are one. ⁴Through it we find our way at last to God. Fear of God describes the constant state of the ego. It is afraid of God because it believes it is in opposition to God’s Will, because it is. But in truth, there is no will but God’s. The ego has projected its wishes on God, making God seem to demand sacrifice. This perceived sacrifice is just the ego’s projection of its demands to maintain its seeming existence.

God’s Will for us is perfect peace, happiness and changeless Love. There is no cause for fear here, unless we accept the ego’s wish to have special status, different from all others. All we need do to awaken to God’s Love is stop denying It. We are grateful that we have the means to let go of the wish for specialness and remember our initial choice to be Love, forever dwelling in God’s Love.

Everything that seems to disturb our peace can be used as an opportunity to forgive our mistaken wish and let Love be. To let Love be is to let our true Self be as God created It. We choose Love today in memory of our initial choice to accept God’s Love in our creation. With this choice, we return to our natural state, at one with our Creator.

Accepting Our Function as God’s Messenger

Let me be still and listen to the truth.

Hear Him today, and listen to the Word which lifts the veil that lies upon the earth, and wakes all those who sleep and cannot see. ²God calls to them through you. ³He needs your voice to speak to them, for who could reach God’s Son except his Father, calling through your Self? ⁴Hear Him today, and offer Him your voice to speak to all the multitude who wait to hear the Word that He will speak today.

Today the holy Word of God is kept through your receiving it to give away, so you can teach the world what giving means by listening and learning it of Him. ²Do not forget today to reinforce your choice to hear and to receive the Word by this reminder, given to yourself as often as is possible today:

³Let me be still and listen to the truth.
⁴I am the messenger of God today, my voice is His,
to give what I receive. (W-106.5;10)

Every moment is an opportunity to be a messenger of God. It is the choice between following His Voice or the ego’s. The ego’s voice seems louder and more insistent because it brings conflict with it. But God’s Voice remains with us always. We can receive His message if we are willing to pause and welcome His peace in place of the ego’s conflict.

We set our intent for today by taking time to let ourselves sink deeply into His peace. It is there to be accepted. As we let ourselves receive it, our mind becomes more quiet. We become more aware of Love’s presence. We feel its comfort and strength. We rest in that presence and remember He is with us always.

With this intent, we go into our day confident that we will be directed in all our busy doing. As we let His Love be our Guide, our words and actions carry the message of Love throughout the day. In peace we remain His messenger, with a joyful message that we are united in God’s Love, forever safe, forever happy, forever loved and loving.

Returning Our Mind to Peace

The Thought of peace was given to God’s Son the instant that his mind had thought of war. ²There was no need for such a Thought before, for peace was given without opposite, and merely was. ³But when the mind is split there is a need of healing. ⁴So the Thought that has the power to heal the split became a part of every fragment of the mind that still was one, but failed to recognize its oneness. ⁵Now it did not know itself, and thought its own Identity was lost.

Salvation is undoing in the sense that it does nothing, failing to support the world of dreams and malice. ²Thus it lets illusions go. ³By not supporting them, it merely lets them quietly go down to dust. ⁴And what they hid is now revealed; an altar to the holy Name of God whereon His Word is written, with the gifts of your forgiveness laid before it, and the memory of God not far behind.

Let us come daily to this holy place, and spend a while together. ²Here we share our final dream. ³It is a dream in which there is no sorrow, for it holds a hint of all the glory given us by God. (A Course in Miracles, W-pII.2.2:1–4:3)

Peace is our natural state of mind. It is an attribute of the Love that is our true Self. Conflict is inevitable when we believe that differences are real; that it is possible for some to have more and others less. This belief is at the core of every battle, every thought of guilt or shame. But beliefs can change.

We are free in every moment to accept the reality of our oneness with our Creator in perfect, changeless Love. If we are willing to pause and rise above the battleground of differences, we see the Light of Love everywhere. The Light dispels the dark shadows of imaginings that seem to make differences real. There is no greater joy than to participate in the eternal flow of giving and receiving Love. This thought undoes all conflict and returns our mind to peace.

Unbinding the Love We Are

Let me not bind Your Son with laws I made.

Your Son is free, my Father. ²Let me not imagine I have bound him with the laws I made to rule the body. ³He is not subject to any laws I made by which I try to make the body more secure. ⁴He is not changed by what is changeable. ⁵He is not slave to any laws of time. ⁶He is as You created him, because he knows no law except the law of love.

Let us not worship idols, nor believe in any law idolatry would make to hide the freedom of the Son of God. ²He is not bound except by his beliefs. ³Yet what he is, is far beyond his faith in slavery or freedom. ⁴He is free because he is his Father’s Son. ⁵And he cannot be bound unless God’s truth can lie, and God can will that He deceive Himself. When we believe we are a body, we have convinced ourselves that a lie is true. By this belief, we think we have limited the unlimited to a form that limits us to a small space and a brief time. This is not God’s Will for us. Love cannot be limited in truth.

The purpose of the Course is to lead us out of this mistaken belief that denies God’s Will for us to be happy, at peace, loved and loving. Our only meaningful purpose in this world is to let go of the belief that limits the Love we are. The limitations we believe we have are myriad. Their complexity hides the simplicity of the truth: We are Love and nothing else.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to help us see the Love that is every brother and remember we are that same Love, united in the Love of God. Everyone we meet or even think of offers us this opportunity to remember only Love is real.
