The Choice for Joy

Everything the ego tells you that you need will hurt you. ²For although the ego urges you again and again to get, it leaves you nothing, for what you get it will demand of you. …⁵Therefore ask not of yourself what you need, for you do not know, and your advice to yourself will hurt you. ⁶For what you think you need will merely serve to tighten up your world against the light [Love], and render you unwilling to question the value that this world can really hold for you.

Only the Holy Spirit knows what you need. ²For He will give you all things that do not block the way to light.

Leave, then, your needs to Him.

…remember what you really want, and say:

²The Holy Spirit leads me unto Christ, and where else would I go? ³What need have I but to awake in Him?

Then follow Him in joy, with faith that He will lead you safely through all dangers to your peace of mind this world may set before you. (A Course in Miracles, T-13.VII.11:1-2,5-6;12:1-2;13:1;14:1-15:1. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

What could be more valuable than joy without limit and peace of mind that cannot be disturbed? This is what the Holy Spirit offers if we let Him be our Guide in all things.

The ego is the belief that forms in this world can offer happiness. But forms have no reality. They are only the ego’s substitute illusions that leave us empty handed. Illusions deny the oneness of Love, thus they deny Reality.

When we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide, we choose the path to the reality of eternal Love. He leads us to everything while the ego leads only to nothing. The choice to follow the Holy Spirit is the choice for joy and peace of mind. It is the choice for God’s Love.

Seeing with the Eyes of Christ

The Holy Spirit looks through me today.

Christ asks that He may use my eyes today, and thus redeem the world. ²He asks this gift that He may offer peace of mind to me, and take away all terror and all pain. ³And as they are removed from me, the dreams that seemed to settle on the world are gone. ⁴Redemption must be one. ⁵As I am saved, the world is saved with me. ⁶For all of us must be redeemed together. ⁷Fear appears in many different forms, but love is one.

My Father, Christ has asked a gift of me, and one I give that it be given me. ²Help me to use the eyes of Christ today, and thus allow the Holy Spirit’s Love to bless all things which I may look upon, that His forgiving Love may rest on me. (A Course in Miracles, W-295. See also ACIM Lesson 295 Insights.)

Any of us can redeem the world because the world we see is a projection from our mind. If we choose to see the world through Christ’s eyes, we are seeing with forgiving eyes. Christ sees only Love or calls for Love. When Love is recognized, the Love of Christ, our true Self, joins with It in Love’s oneness.

When calls for Love are recognized, the Love we are answers with Love. Seeing with Christ’s vision leads us to the awareness that we are Love and nothing else. Today we call upon Christ’s vision, for we would awaken to our Home in the Heaven of God’s Love.

Finding the Source of Limitless Joy

We waken hearing Him, and let Him speak to us five minutes as the day begins, and end the day by listening again five minutes more before we go to sleep. ²Our only preparation is to let our interfering thoughts be laid aside, not separately, but all of them as one. ³They are the same. ⁴We have no need to make them different, and thus delay the time when we can hear our Father speak to us. ⁵We hear Him now. ⁶We come to Him today.

With nothing in our hands to which we cling, with lifted hearts and listening minds we pray:

²Only salvation can be said to cure.
³Speak to us, Father, that we may be healed.

⁴And we will feel salvation cover us with soft protection, and with peace so deep that no illusion can disturb our minds, nor offer proof to us that it is real. ⁵This will we learn today. ⁶And we will say our prayer for healing hourly, and take a minute as the hour strikes, to hear the answer to our prayer be given us as we attend in silence and in joy. ⁷This is the day when healing comes to us. ⁸This is the day when separation ends, and we remember Who we really are. (A Course in Miracles, W-140.11–12. See also ACIM Lesson 140 Insights.)

The ego equates happiness with salvation. It looks for special relationships or circumstances that it believes will make it happy. A common thought is, “I will be happy when… or if…”. The last place the ego looks for peace and happiness is within the mind. It has denied the one Source where salvation is found.

Our true Self is eternally united with the Source of peace, joy and Love. To become aware of this Source, it is helpful to pause to set aside the ego’s thoughts. As we let our mind settle into the quiet peace within, we find the Love we thought was missing.

Joy abounds as we join in the eternal giving and receiving of Love. This is our salvation, our happiness. Today will be a happy day with this practice.

We Choose to Listen to the Holy Spirit

³Spirit is the Thought of God which He created like Himself. ⁴The unified spirit is God’s one Son, or Christ.

In this world, because the mind is split, the Sons of God appear to be separate. ²Nor do their minds seem to be joined. ³In this illusory state, the concept of an “individual mind” seems to be meaningful. ⁴It is therefore described in the course as if it has two parts; spirit and ego.

Spirit is the part that is still in contact with God through the Holy Spirit, Who abides in this part but sees the other part as well.

The other part of the mind is entirely illusory and makes only illusions.

The mind can be right or wrong, depending on the voice to which it listens. ²Right-mindedness listens to the Holy Spirit, forgives the world, and through Christ’s vision sees the real world in its place.”

Wrong-mindedness listens to the ego and makes illusions; perceiving sin and justifying anger, and seeing guilt, disease and death as real. (A Course in Miracles, C-1.1:3–3:1;4:1;5:1-2;6:1)

We experience a world of conflict because we choose to listen to the ego. The ego always perceives differences. There is always some degree of conflict if there are differences. Our dedication to listening to the ego makes us unaware of the freedom our Spirit knows in its reality of the oneness of Love. Spirit is universally the same. There can be no conflict in Spirit.

In the dream of this world, we choose in every moment between the illusions of the ego and the oneness of Spirit, between conflict and peace, between fear and Love.  We have been given the Holy Spirit as our Guide to lead us out of the ego’s conflict to the peace that is our Home in the Love of God.

Today we remind ourselves frequently to pause and ask for the Holy Spirit’s help to see truly.

How to Live in Love

I will step back and let Him lead the way.

There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. ²You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. ³Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet. ⁴And the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. ⁵Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also, and believe that you are like them, as you were before.

The world is an illusion. ²Those who choose to come to it are seeking for a place where they can be illusions, and avoid their own reality. ³Yet when they find their own reality is even here, then they step back and let it lead the way. ⁴What other choice is really theirs to make? ⁵To let illusions walk ahead of truth is madness. ⁶But to let illusion sink behind the truth and let the truth stand forth as what it is, is merely sanity.

This is the simple choice we make today. ²The mad illusion will remain awhile in evidence, for those to look upon who chose to come, and have not yet rejoiced to find they were mistaken in their choice. ³They cannot learn directly from the truth, because they have denied that it is so. ⁴And so they need a Teacher Who perceives their madness, but Who still can look beyond illusion to the simple truth in them.

…there is a… road that leads away from loss of every kind, for sacrifice and deprivation both are quickly left behind. ²This is the way appointed for you now. (A Course in Miracles, W-155.1–3;5:1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 155 Insights.)

When we step back and let Him lead the way, we become representatives of the Holy Spirit. Under His direction, we are always led by Love. We see with the eyes of Love. We communicate Love with our actions and words.

The way to accomplish this is cleared through forgiveness. As we forgive the wish for specialness and the thoughts spawned by it, we clear away the interference that prevents us from letting Him lead the way. As we follow, the way becomes increasingly peaceful, joyous and loving. Judgments yield to happy extensions of Love.

This is the way offered to us now. When we choose to follow It, we are among God’s teachers. We live in Love.

Trusting the Truth in Our Brothers

Trusting your brothers is essential to establishing and holding up your faith in your ability to transcend doubt and lack of sure conviction in yourself. ²When you attack a brother, you proclaim that he is limited by what you have perceived in him. ³You do not look beyond his errors. ⁴Rather, they are magnified, becoming blocks to your awareness of the Self that lies beyond your own mistakes, and past his seeming sins as well as yours.

…if a brother’s sins occur to us, our narrowed focus will restrict our sight, and turn our eyes upon our own mistakes, which we will magnify and call our “sins.” ³So, for a little while, without regard to past or future, should such blocks arise we will transcend them with instructions to our minds to change their focus, as we say:

⁴It is not this that I would look upon.
⁵I trust my brothers, who are one with me.

…as our focus goes beyond mistakes, we will behold a wholly sinless world. ⁴When seeing this is all we want to see, when this is all we seek for in the name of true perception, are the eyes of Christ inevitably ours. ⁵And the Love He feels for us becomes our own as well. ⁶This will become the only thing we see reflected in the world and in ourselves. (A Course in Miracles, W-181.1;6:2-5;8:3-6. See also ACIM Lesson 181 Insights.)

We cannot trust our brothers if we believe they are bodies. Bodies cannot be trusted because they are illusions; illusions are unstable and changeable. To trust our brothers, we need to look past the body to the truth in him. He is Love and nothing else. We attack our brother when we believe he is limited to a body. Love is unlimited and eternal.

As we forgive the images of bodies and learn to see past them to the presence of Love. We learn that we are that same Love and united in It. We can trust in Love. It is all that is real. It never changes. It extends Itself without limit. This awareness comes as we forgive the images of separation, harm and loss.

The ability to see a brother truly is in our mind. It is our natural way of seeing. It does not use the body’s eyes. It is Christ’s vision with which our true Self sees every brother. Today we choose Christ’s vision to learn of our oneness in Love with every brother, along with our Creator.

Remembering the Love in Which We Live

My grievances hide the light of the world in me.

²My grievances show me what is not there, and hide from me what I would see. ³Recognizing this, what do I want my grievances for? ⁴They keep me in darkness and hide the light. ⁵Grievances and light cannot go together, but light and vision must be joined for me to see. ⁶To see, I must lay grievances aside.

²Let me not use this as a block to sight.
³The light of the world will shine all this away.
⁴I have no need for this. ⁵I want to see.

²Today I will recognize where my salvation is. ³It is in me because its Source is there. ⁴It has not left its Source, and so it cannot have left my mind. ⁵I will not look for it outside myself. ⁶It is not found outside and then brought in. ⁷But from within me it will reach beyond, and everything I see will but reflect the light that shines in me and in itself. (A Course in Miracles, W-85.1:1-6;2:2-5;3:2-7. See also ACIM Lesson 85 Insights.)

Everyone in this world is searching for Love. This dream is the projection of the idea of denying Love in the quest for specialness. Specialness — forms of differences — cannot coexist in the oneness of Love. This Love is our true Self, the Son of God. We who are Love seek for It in the world where It cannot be found. Yet we carry Love with us wherever we go, in every instant. Only our grievances hide the presence of Love from our awareness.

Today we set aside this childish petulance. We want to see our true Self in the Love we share with every brother. The Love we seek is in us now. As we forgive our wish to have things the way we want them apart from others, we realize we live in Love. In this Love is our joy and peace. As we lay our grievances aside we see the Love in every brother and learn that we are Love along with them.
