Letting Our True Self Be Our Guide

If you are as God created you, then there has been no separation of your mind from His, no split between your mind and other minds, and only unity within your own.

You are as God created you. Today honor your Self. Let graven images you made to be the Son of God instead of what he is be worshipped not today. Deep in your mind the holy Christ in you is waiting your acknowledgment as you. And you are lost and do not know yourself while He is unacknowledged and unknown.

Seek Him today, and find Him. He will be your Savior from all idols you have made. For when you find Him, you will under­stand how worthless are your idols, and how false the images which you believed were you. Today we make a great advance to truth by letting idols go, and opening our hands and hearts and minds to God today. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 110, W-pI.110.4:1;9-10. When we believe we are a separate identity in a body, we are believing in a false image, an idol made to replace our true Self, the Son of God. This belief blocks our awareness of the loving Self that remains eternally one with God.

Again and again the Course emphasizes that we were created as God’s Son and this will never change. Our beliefs do not change Reality, but they can block our awareness of It. This is why forgiveness of our mistaken beliefs is the path to awakening to Reality.

Today let us pause frequently to ask, “How would Love perceive this… [situation, relationship, thought]?” With this question we are seeking to let our true Self be our Guide. With this as our focus, Christ’s vision will see past the false images of the world and show us our unity with the Love that is everywhere around us and in us.

Opening to the Heart of Love Within

My heart is beating in the peace of God.

Surrounding me is all the life that God created in His Love. It calls to me in every heartbeat and in every breath; in every action and in every thought. Peace fills my heart, and floods my body with the purpose of forgiveness. Now my mind is healed, and all I need to save the world is given me. Each heartbeat brings me peace; each breath infuses me with strength. I am a messenger of God, directed by His Voice, sustained by Him in love, and held forever quiet and at peace within His loving Arms. Each heart­beat calls His Name, and every one is answered by His Voice, assuring me I am at home in Him.

Let me attend Your Answer, not my own. Father, my heart is beating in the peace the Heart of Love created. It is there and only there that I can be at home. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 267, W-pII.267. See also ACIM Lesson 267 Insights.)

We open the door to God’s peace through forgiveness. When we judge anything on our own, we interfere with the constant flow of peace from the Loving Heart of God. But each time we step back from our perceptions of the world and open our minds to the presence of peace, we accept forgiveness as our purpose. Through forgiveness we recognize the reality of Love beyond our perceptions in the world.

Instead of believing in images of separation in the world, we look past them to the innocence of Christ with Holy Spirit’s help. This day-by-day, moment-by-moment, practice opens our heart to accept the Heart of Love as our own; we learn to see the presence of Love all around us. The images of differences grow dimmer as we let go of our investment in them. The Light of Love is seen more clearly.

Forgiveness is our only meaningful purpose in this world. It is the means by which we awaken to our Life in the Love of God.

The Lineage of Our True Self

The Name of God is my inheritance.

God’s Name reminds me that I am His Son, not slave to time, unbound by laws which rule the world of sick illu­sions, free in God, forever and forever one with Him.

I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 204, W-pII.204. See also ACIM Lesson 204 Insights.)

It is essential to the ego that we maintain our identification with a body. The body is the anchor that binds us to the dream of separation. Part of reinforcing the “reality” of the body is dwelling on its lineage. There are websites that earn big income from people who want to know the lineage of their body. The list of ancestors seems to give meaning and existence to the body and makes time seem real. DNA is another link to the physical body used to reinforce the appearance that the body is real. The focus on lineage, whether it’s DNA or historical “family” records, keeps the ego as our primary identification.

The more attention given this, the heavier the seeming veil that hides the truth of our true Self from our awareness. For we are not a body. The misidentification with a body needs to be recognized and let go to free our minds to accept our true Self, Whose single lineage is God.

The lineage of our true Self goes only to the single Source of all that is true and Real. This Self includes all of the oneness of Love. We are one with every brother in this Love. Our true lineage is all encompassing. No one is excluded from It. One Son, one Creator. We are that Son, now. There is no other; there is no history nor time.

The truth of What we are remains as It was created — eternal, changeless Love. Let us join together in accepting the Love that is our Heritage.

The Call to Awaken to Our True Self

I am surrounded by the Love of God.

Father, You stand before me and behind, beside me, in the place I see myself, and everywhere I go. You are in all the things I look upon, the sounds I hear, and every hand that reaches for my own. In You time disappears, and place becomes a meaningless belief. For what sur­rounds Your Son and keeps him safe is Love itself. There is no source but this, and nothing is that does not share its holiness; that stands beyond Your one creation, or without the Love which holds all things within itself. Father, Your Son is like Yourself. We come to You in Your Own Name today, to be at peace within Your everlasting Love.

My brothers, join with me in this today. This is salvation’s prayer. Must we not join in what will save the world, along with us? (W-pII.264)

This is a helpful lesson to remember when fear thoughts come into our minds. The ego likes to depreciate the power of Love to make itself appear strong and frightening. But the fact that only Love is real means that anything that frightens us is a figment of our imagination. It is a bad dream that will disappear when we awaken to the Love that is everywhere around us and in us. If we are surrounded by all that is real, then any made up illusion can have no effect on us.

Today let us join together in vigilance to remember that we dwell in the safety of changeless Love. This is our salvation, our release from frightening dreams. It is a call to awaken to our true Self.

The Decision to Accept Our Perfection

On my decision all salvation rests.

Father, Your trust in me has been so great, I must be worthy. You created me, and know me as I am. And yet You placed Your Son’s salvation in my hands, and let it rest on my decision. I must be beloved of You indeed. And I must be steadfast in holiness as well, that You would give Your Son to me in certainty that he is safe Who still is part of You, and yet is mine, because He is my Self.

And so, again today, we pause to think how much our Father loves us. And how dear His Son, created by His Love, remains to Him Whose Love is made complete in him. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 238, W-pII.238. See also ACIM Lesson 238 Insights.)

Our Self was created perfect by the Source of perfection. This is the only Reality. This description of our Self is the complete opposite of the self image made by the ego. This false image is ingrained in our concept of ourself so firmly that the idea of being created perfect is unbelievable, even considered blasphemous.

But we are being called to let go of the ego’s false image and accept the Reality of our one Self, Which unites us with every brother and our Creator. This is the decision we must make. We do not need to do anything to qualify as God’s Son. It is simply a fact that could never be changed because it is part of the changelessness of God. 

Because of our investment of the dream of a separate identity, it takes time for our inner Teacher to train us forgive the fear-based false image and accept God’s gift of all His Love. The decision to choose the Holy Spirit’s guidance instead of the ego’s will restore our awareness to the fact that we are perfect as God’s Creation.

Accepting God’s Blessing

If you but knew the glorious goal that lies beyond forgiveness, you would not keep hold on any thought, however light the touch of evil [separation] on it may appear to be. For you would understand how great the cost of holding anything God did not give in minds that can direct the hand to bless, and lead God’s Son unto his Father’s house. Would you not want to be a friend to him, created by his Father as His home? If God esteems him worthy of Himself, would you attack him with the hands of hate? Who would lay bloody hands on Heaven itself, and hope to find its peace? Your brother thinks he holds the hand of death. Believe him not. But learn, instead, how blessed are you who can release him, just by offering him yours. (A Course in Miracles, T-29.V.6. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

God has blessed us, His Son, by giving us all of Himself — all His peace, His joy and Love. But unless we give that same blessing to our brother, we do not know how blessed we are. All our judgments block the blessing we could be giving and receiving.

Forgiveness lets go of the judgment and lets God’s blessing flow freely. There is no greater blessing we can give ourselves than to forgive our judgments. One we once perceived as an adversary becomes our dearest friend, joining us in the joy of God’s Love.

We need not wait. We can take our perceptions in every now moment and offer them to the Holy Spirit for His Light of Love to shine away the errors to reveal the truth in our brother and learn of it in ourselves.

As we go through this day with the Holy Spirit as our Guide, we hasten our journey Home. We walk lightly, for we walk to the Light.

Lifting the Veil of Illusions

I have given what I see all the meaning it has for me. I have judged everything I look upon, and it is this and only this I see. This is not vision. It is merely an illusion of reality, because my judgments have been made quite apart from reality. I am willing to recognize the lack of validity in my judgments, because I want to see. My judgments have hurt me, and I do not want to see according to them. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 51, W-pI.51.2. See also ACIM Lesson 51 Insights.)

Judgments are the ego’s principal defense against the truth of Love’s innocence. Our judgments are always about the form of what we perceive. This is because form is an illusion and has no real content.

The antidote for judgment is forgiveness. We need to forgive the meaning we give to the forms we perceive. This meaning is projected based on our memories of the past. Since Reality is eternally in the present, our judgments hide the present by cloaking them with our fears and guilt. We do not really see the truth of what was in front of us. We see only our projections of what we believe we are. If we believe we are a separate identity, we see images of separation. If we believe we are Love, we see the oneness of Love.

The Holy Spirit is ever present in our mind to help us sort illusion from truth. If we are willing to accept His guidance, we learn to recognize illusions and let them go. Without the veil of illusions, we see the innocence of the Love we are reflected back to us. This is Christ’s vision.
