Our Journey of Awakening

Today I will judge nothing that occurs.

I will be honest with myself today. I will not think that I already know what must remain beyond my present grasp. I will not think I understand the whole from bits of my perception, which are all that I can see. Today I recognize that this is so. And so I am relieved of judgments that I cannot make. Thus do I free myself and what I look upon, to be in peace as God created us.

Father, today I leave creation free to be itself. I honor all its parts, in which I am included. We are one because each part contains Your mem­ory, and truth must shine in all of us as one. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 243, W-pII.243. See also ACIM Lesson 243 Insights.)

The ego always speaks first. It is quick to judge every perception following its dictates which deny the presence of Love. This is essential to the continuance of the ego’s illusion that it has successfully separated from God. As long as we put the ego in charge of interpreting everything we perceive, we are bound to its loveless world.

But we have another choice. We can put the Holy Spirit in charge of interpreting our perceptions. Because we have a well-entrenched habit of following the ego’s lead, we must be vigilant of our thoughts. We must ask of everything, “What is it for?” and remind ourselves that of our self, we do not know.

We let the Voice for God answer this question by pausing to welcome peace to our mind. His Voice is heard in a mind at peace. The Holy Spirit will show us that all things are either for extending Love or a call for Love, which is to be answered with Love. He will help us recognize these only meaningful purposes and teach us how to respond with Love. This is our journey of awakening that will return us to the full remembrance that we are Love and nothing else. We remain as God created us.

Finding Love Beyond Appearances of Lack of Love

The Holy Spirit mediates between illusions and the truth. Since He must bridge the gap between reality and dreams, perception leads to knowledge through the grace that God has given Him, to be His gift to everyone who turns to Him for truth. Across the bridge that He provides are dreams all carried to the truth, to be dispelled before the light of knowledge. There are sights and sounds forever laid aside. And where they were per­ceived before, forgiveness has made possible perception’s tran­quil end.

The goal the Holy Spirit’s teaching sets is just this end of dreams. For sights and sounds must be translated from the witnesses of fear to those of love. And when this is entirely accomplished, learning has achieved the only goal it has in truth. For learning, as the Holy Spirit guides it to the outcome He perceives for it, becomes the means to go beyond itself, to be replaced by the eternal truth. The eternal truth is that only Love is real and Love is one. Our true Self is an extension of God’s Love, eternally united with Him.

This is the opposite of what we experience in the world as an individual identity housed in a body and destined to die. This is a construct of the ego which denies the reality of Love. The world we perceive was made by the ego to hide from Love’s eternal presence. Only our identification with the ego makes this world of conflict, loss, fear and guilt seem real.

God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us undo this mistaken identification. In truth we are not an ego with a separate identity. Our true Self is God’s Son, wholly loving and wholly innocent. To awaken to our true Self, we need to forgive — let go of — our mistaken beliefs that deny the Love we are.

The Holy Spirit’s function is to help us forgive. In our hearts, we want to remember the Love we are. We want to share our Love by joining with the Love that surrounds us everywhere and in everyone. This is the underlying hunger beneath all our searching in the world.

Today we practice opening our hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit’s loving guidance. As we are willing to accept His help, He will heal our fear-based thoughts and shine His Light in the world to reveal the presence of Love behind the images of separation. Through this practice we awaken to the Love we are.

Let’s Be Generous with Our Love Today

The term generosity has special meaning to the teacher of God. It is not the usual meaning of the word; in fact, it is a meaning that must be learned and learned very carefully. …To the teachers of God, it means giving away in order to keep.

The teacher of God is generous out of Self interest. This does not refer, however, to the self of which the world speaks. The teacher of God does not want anything he cannot give away, because he realizes it would be valueless to him by definition. What would he want it for? He could only lose because of it. He could not gain. Therefore he does not seek what only he could keep, because that is a guarantee of loss. He does not want to suffer. Why should he ensure himself pain? But he does want to keep for himself all things that are of God, and therefore for His Son. These are the things that belong to him. These he can give away in true generosity, protecting them forever for himself. (A Course in Miracles, M-4.VII.1:1-2,5;2)

The ego’s world is a dream of limitation in which every form is defined by its limits. Thus giving any form away must mean the giver of the form loses it. With this perception, true generosity is impossible, for giving always involves loss.

Because God’s Love is eternal and one, it is impossible to lose. It could be said that a teacher of God is a teacher of Love. A teacher of God remembers that only Love is real. His true Self is an extension of God’s Love, eternally one with Love. Love by Its nature is eternally extending Itself. Thus our true Self is always extending Love.

Each time we forgive ourselves for believing we are separate, we make way for the Love of our true Self to give of Itself. Our true Self’s generosity is innate. It is always ready to teach only Love, for that is what It is.

Let us be generous with our Love today by letting It guide our thoughts, words and actions.

The Choice to See Heaven’s Open Gate

Salvation is the recognition that the truth is true, and nothing else is true. …Truth cannot have an opposite.

As God created you, you must remain unchangeable, with transitory states by definition false. And that includes all shifts in feeling, alterations in conditions of the body and the mind; in all awareness and in all response. This is the all-inclusiveness which sets the truth apart from falsehood, and the false kept separate from the truth, as what it is.

God made [the world] not. Of this you can be sure. What can He know of the ephemeral, the sinful and the guilty, the afraid, the suffering and lonely, and the mind that lives within a body that must die? …only madness makes a world like this.

Let us today be truly humble, and accept what we have made as what it is. The power of decision is our own. Decide but to accept your rightful place as co-creator of the universe, and all you think you made will disappear. What rises to awareness then will be all that there ever was, eternally as it is now. And it will take the place of self-deceptions made but to usurp the altar to the Father and the Son.

The universe God created is the universe of Love. It encompasses all that is real. Within His universe, there are no differences, no forms, nothing but Love’s oneness.

The ego made a counter universe, which completely denies God’s universe. But what denies the only reality must be itself unreal. When we choose the ego as our identity, we are only aware of the ego’s counter universe. It is the only “reality” we are aware of. Our ego identification makes us subject to all its rules and its laws. It seems to be a closed system with no escape.

We have a choice. We can choose to accept the help God gave us to lead us out of the false universe. The Holy Spirit helps us recognize the falsity of the ego’s world and choose Love as our reality. Forgiveness is the mechanism through which we make this choice. We forgive ourselves for choosing against God and in that forgiveness see that the gate of Heaven is open wide to welcome us Home.

Giving and Receiving Love’s Blessing

Vision depends upon today’s idea [To give and to receive are one in truth]. The light is in it, for it rec­onciles allseeming opposites. And what is light except the resolution, born of peace, of all your conflicts and mistaken thoughts into one concept which is wholly true? Even that one [concept] will disappear, because the Thought behind it will appear instead to take its place. And now you are at peace forever, for the dream is over then.

True light that makes true vision possible is not the light the body’s eyes behold. It is a state of mind that has become so unified that darkness cannot be perceived at all. And thus what is the same is seen as one, while what is not the same remains un­noticed, for it is not there.

This is the light that shows no opposites, and vision, being healed, has power to heal. This is the light that brings your peace of mind to other minds, to share it and be glad that they are one with you and with themselves. This is the light that heals because it brings single perception, based upon one frame of ref­erence, from which one meaning comes.

Here are both giving and receiving seen as different aspects of one Thought whose truth does not depend on which is seen as first, nor which appears to be in second place. There are only two mutually exclusive categories — real and unreal. The ego is unreal and is unaware of Reality. Love is Real and cannot see anything but Itself. Lack of Love is unknown to It.

The Mind of our true Self is united with the one Mind of Love. The Light of Love shines in It, leaving no room for dark thoughts of lovelessness. This Light is the natural condition of our mind. The practice of letting Love heal our mistaken belief in separation, forgiving our illusions, unites our mind with the Love of God.

This forgiveness is a gift we give by seeing our brother’s truly and we receive by accepting the Love we are. This giving and receiving occurs in the same instant. As we choose to let Love guide all our thoughts, words and actions, we experience and give Love’s blessing to the world.

The Goal of Living in and as Love

Let me remember that my goal is God.

All that is needful is to train our minds to overlook all little senseless aims, and to remember that our goal is God [Love]. His mem­ory is hidden in our minds, obscured but by our pointless little goals which offer nothing, and do not exist. Shall we continue to allow God’s grace to shine in unawareness, while the toys and trinkets of the world are sought instead? God is our only goal, our only Love. We have no aim but to remember Him.

Our goal is but to follow in the way that leads to You. We have no goal but this. What could we want but to remember You? What could we seek but our Identity? (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 258, W-pII.258. See also ACIM Lesson 258 Insights.)

The ego is the denial of Love. The way out of the ego’s world of projected illusions is to choose Love (God) as our only goal. Because only Love is real, the goal of Love leads us out of illusions and back to Reality.

Each time we let the Holy Spirit help us heal our fear-based or guilty thoughts, we take a step forward toward our goal of Love. The way Home is to practice pausing frequently throughout the day to open to Holy Spirit’s loving correction of our mistaken thoughts.

Choosing the Guide to Happiness

…God gives you only happiness. …Love cannot give evil, and what is not happiness is evil.

…God has given you your function. We have seen that there are only two parts of your mind. One is ruled by the ego, and is made up of illusions. The other is the home of the Holy Spirit, where truth abides. There are no other guides but these to choose between, and no other outcomes possible as a result of your choice but the fear that the ego always engenders, and the love that the Holy Spirit always offers to replace it.

Think also about the many forms the illusion of your function has taken in your mind, and the many ways in which you tried to find salvation [happiness] under the ego’s guidance. …Yet the ego is the only alternative to the Holy Spirit’s Voice.

You will listen to madness or hear the truth. …On one side stand all illusions. All truth stands on the other. Let us try today to realize that only the truth is true.

Love is the Source of happiness. The ego is the denial of Love; it is the wish to separate from the Source of Love. When we let the ego be our guide, we are choosing to be unhappy. The ego tries to hide this fact by offering many forms that seem to offer happiness.

Yet if we are honest with ourselves, we have to acknowledge that no form in the world has ever offered lasting happiness. The best the ego illusions can ever offer are brief periods that seem happy, yet never last. We are soon directed on another search for some other form that might satisfy.

As the Voice for God, the Holy Spirit guides us to choose what will bring us God’s gift of perfect happiness. This happiness is eternal and remains ours without limit. This happiness comes by forgiving our wish to separate from Love. This is our function. It is the only way to experience God’s gift of perfect happiness. While forgiveness is incomplete, our level of happiness seems to be inconsistent. This is only because our unforgiveness limits the amount of happiness we are willing to accept.

In every moment we choose between the ego’s denial of Love and happiness, and the Holy Spirit’s gift of forgiveness through healing our fear based thoughts. Today we choose to be happy by choosing the Holy Spirit’s help to forgive.
