Our Gentle Path to Awakening

…what you need are intervals each day in which the learn­ing of the world becomes a transitory phase; a prison house from which you go into the sunlight and forget the darkness. Here you understand the Word, the Name which God has given you; the one Identity which all things share; the one acknowledgment of what is true. And then step back to darkness, not because you think it real, but only to proclaim its unreality in terms which still have meaning in the world that darkness rules.

Use all the little names and symbols which delineate the world of darkness. Yet accept them not as your reality. The Holy Spirit uses all of them, but He does not forget creation has one Name, one meaning, and a single Source which unifies all things within Itself. Use all the names the world bestows on them but for convenience, yet do not forget [all things] share the Name of God along with you. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 184, W-pI.184.10-11. The Course offers us a gentle path to awaken from the dream of separation, guilt and fear. It is designed to not trigger fears of loss and death, but to show us the peace and Love that is our natural Home beyond the dream. It teaches us how to live in the world while waking up.

In the world all things are images, each with its own name to distinguish it as separate. We use these names to communicate. At the same time we need to practice holding the awareness that words are only symbols and therefore not real. Beyond the symbols is the eternal presence of Love’s oneness.

To keep in touch with Love’s Reality, we need to take time each day to go to the center of peace within, where the Holy Spirit reminds us that we are God’s Son, united with Him eternally. Each time we touch base with God’s peace helps us loosen our investment in the world’s symbols. The dream becomes less real and our reactions to perceptions of the symbols softens. We experience consistently deeper levels of peace. Things that used to upset us no longer trigger our guilt. More we frequently see through the eyes of Love. The veil of separation gets thinner and thinner.

When our forgiveness is complete, we awaken to our Home in the oneness of Love.

Celebrating Christ’s Vision

To do nothing is to rest, and make a place within you where the activity of the body ceases to demand attention. Into this place the Holy Spirit comes, and there abides. He will remain when you forget, and the body’s activities return to occupy your conscious mind.

Yet there will always be this place of rest to which you can return. And you will be more aware of this quiet center of the storm than all its raging activity. This quiet center, in which you do nothing, will remain with you, giving you rest in the midst of every busy doing on which you are sent. For from this center will you be directed how to use the body sinlessly. It is this center, from which the body is absent, that will keep [keep the body sinless] in your awareness of it. When we pause to step back from the busyness of our daily activity and focus on the center of peace within, we open our minds the the Holy Spirit’s guidance to use the body sinlessly. We are not asked to deny that we have things to do in the world. But when we go to our quiet center, our use of the body is directed by Love’s oneness instead of the ego’s demand for separation and the guilt that comes with it. The body is used for Love’s unifying purpose.

Let’s use this season of celebrating Christ to welcome His vision by frequently going to the quiet inner place where we rest in the Love of our Creator.

Our Unbreakable Communication with God

[The Holy Spirit] is the Voice for God, and has therefore taken form. This form is not His reality, which God alone knows along with Christ, His real Son, Who is part of Him.

The Holy Spirit is described throughout the course as giving us the answer to the separation and bringing the plan of the Atonement [undoing of the dream of separation] to us, establishing our particular part in it and showing us exactly what it is.

The Holy Spirit is described as the remaining Communication Link between God and His separated Sons. In order to fulfill this special function the Holy Spirit has assumed a dual function. He knows because He is part of God; He perceives because He was sent to save humanity. He is the great correction principle; the bringer of true perception, the inherent power of the vision of Christ. He is the light in which the forgiven world is perceived; in which the face of Christ alone is seen. (A Course in Miracles, C-6.1:4-2:1;3:1-5)

By choosing to accept the thought that we could separate from our Creator, we established a situation in which we believed we had broken our communication with God. In that instant God established the Holy Spirit to be His Communication Link with His Son Who mistakenly believed he was separate.

The Self that is God’s Son was not affected by this mistaken belief. The Holy Spirit speaks for this Self to the part of the mind that perceives separation is real. He is the Bridge between this Self and the self made by the ego in the attempt to make separation and specialness seem real.

As long as part of our mind accepts belief in separation, the Holy Spirit is needed to teach us to look beyond appearances. With His help, we learn to see with Christ’s vision which shows us a forgiven world. When forgiveness is complete, the made-up self no longer seems to exist and the Holy Spirit is no longer needed. We remember we are the Self God created as His one Son.

Being a Messenger of Love

Be not afraid today to circumvent the voices of the world. Walk lightly past their meaningless persuasion. Hear them not. Be still today and listen to the truth. Go past all things which do not speak of Him Who holds your happiness within His Hand, held out to you in welcome and in love. Hear only Him today, and do not wait to reach Him longer. Hear one Voice today.

He comes with miracles a thousand times as happy and as wonderful as those you ever dreamed or wished for in your dreams.

Listen today, and you will hear a Voice which will resound throughout the world through you.

Let me be still and listen to the truth.
I am the messenger of God today,

We have used our “lives” to learn the ego’s lessons in separation. We have hidden from the fear and guilt that come with these lessons by projecting them on an outside world. These lessons leave us feeling weak, vulnerable, uncertain, unhappy and incomplete. It is time to stop listening to ego’s voice which speaks only lies. It can never bring us peace of mind, lasting happiness and changeless Love.

Today, let us join together in a shared commitment to listen to the Voice of truth. With this shared intent, we become God’s messengers to bring His lessons in Love to the world.

Choosing True Happiness

Only God’s plan for salvation will work.

All things are possible to God. Salvation must be yours because of His plan, which cannot fail.

Ask Him very specifically:

What would You have me do?
Where would You have me go?
What would You have me say, and to whom?

Give Him full charge of the rest of [your life], and let Him tell you what needs to be done by you in His plan for your salvation. He will answer in proportion to your willingness to hear His Voice. We think what will make us happy is our salvation. The ego has a plan to make us happy if we believe specialness and separation is what we want. It has myriad schemes to make us happy. But none of them satisfy because the best it can offer are illusions of specialness that cannot last. The ego’s plans are always guided by the its goal of seek and do not find.

God’s Will for us is perfect happiness because He shares all His joy with His Sons. His plan for our salvation is thus the plan that will bring us eternal happiness. In every moment we choose between the ego’s plan that will never satisfy and God’s plan that brings us eternal happiness.

Our best choice for happiness is obvious were it not for our wish for specialness. This wish denies God’s gift because God does not give to some and not others. God’s gifts are given equally to all. The practice of forgiving the wish for specialness welcomes God’s plan for our happiness.

Today we choose to walk hand in hand with the Holy Spirit, letting Him guide all our perceptions. He will purify our misperceptions so that we can see the Reality of Love everywhere and experience the joy of joining with Love.

The Foundation of Forgiveness

Love makes no comparisons. And gratitude can only be sincere if it be joined to love. We offer thanks to God our Father that in us all things will find their freedom.

Walk, then, in gratitude the way of love. …When your forgiveness is complete you will have total gratitude, for you will see that everything has earned the right to love by being loving, even as your Self.

Gratitude goes hand in hand with love, and where one is the other must be found. For gratitude is but an aspect of the Love which is the Source of all creation. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 195, W-pI.195.4:2-4;8:1,6;10:2-3. See also ACIM Lesson 195 Insights.)

Only Love is real. Thus everything that is real is loving. If we perceive anything that is not loving, we are perceiving the unreal, which does not exist in truth. This is the foundation for all forgiveness.

We have taught ourselves to believe that illusions are real. To forgive, we need to learn to recognize illusions as unreal and therefore nonexistent. The Holy Spirit is in our mind as our Teacher to learn His lessons. His teaching corrects our misperceptions.

When we accept the lesson that what we thought was real and called for defense is not real, the perceived disturbance disappears. What we recognize as unreal is automatically dismissed. We forgive because we realize nothing really happened. It was only a dream. We let go of a barrier to Love and Love flows in to take its place, bringing gratitude with it. Each time we learn this important correction of our perception, we take a step closer to wholly accepting that only Love is real.

The World Christ’s Vision Sees

My holy vision sees all things as pure.

Father, Your Mind created all that is, Your Spirit entered into it, Your Love gave life to it. And would I look upon what You created as if it could be made sinful [separate]? I would not perceive such dark and fearful images. A madman’s dream is hardly fit to be my choice, instead of all the loveli­ness with which You blessed creation; all its purity, its joy, and its eternal, quiet home in You.

And while we still remain outside the gate of Heaven, let us look on all we see through holy vision and the eyes of Christ. Let all appearances seem pure to us, that we may pass them by in innocence, and walk together to our Father’s house as brothers and the holy Sons of God. Holy vision sees only the oneness of God’s Love. It sees past appearances made by the ego to portray separation as real. In every instant we choose between perceiving the ego’s projected images of separation and Christ’s vision, which shows us our unity in Love with every brother and our Father.

Today let’s join together to practice seeing with the eyes of Love. Love created us loving. Love created us helpful. Love created us happy. Love created us one. This is the world Christ would have us see.
