Making the Choice for Love

You need to be reminded that you think a thousand choices are confronting you, when there is really only one to make. And even this but seems to be a choice. Do not confuse yourself with all the doubts that myriad decisions would induce. You make but one. …There is no contradiction to the truth.

And the truth cannot be learned, but only recognized. In recognition [truth’s] acceptance lies, and as it is accepted it is known. …Ours are teaching goals, to be attained through learning how to reach them, what they are, and what they offer you. Decisions are the outcome of your learning, for they rest on what you have accepted as the truth of what you are, and what your needs must be. The goal of the Course is to teach us to distinguish to what is real from what is unreal. In the Introduction it states, “The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite” and “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists.” Only Love is real. This is the lesson we must learn.

To learn this lesson we must learn that this world, made by the ego, is not real. The Course’s curriculum helps us learn that this world offers nothing that we really want. It cannot bring us undisturbable peace or eternal joy. It also teaches that we have an inner Teacher in our mind to Whom we an turn in every instant to help us see the reality of Love behind the ego’s illusions.

With our inner Teacher’s help, we learn that we are Love and nothing else. As we accept these lessons, the appeal of the ego’s unreal substitutes for love weakens. We choose the reality of Love instead, which brings with it the experience Love’s attributes — eternal peace and happiness. We choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide today, to help us choose Love in all our doing.

Accepting the Light We Are

I will there be light. I will use the power of my will today. It is not my will to grope about in darkness, fearful of shadows and afraid of things unseen and unreal. Light shall be my guide today. I will follow it where it leads me, and I will look only on what it shows me. This day I will experience the peace of true perception.

There is no will but God’s. I am safe today because there is no will but God’s. I can become afraid only when I believe there is another will. I try to attack only when I am afraid, and only when I try to attack can I believe that my eternal safety is threatened. Today I will recognize that all this has not occurred. The ego is the idea of a will in opposition to God’s. Because there is no will but God’s, the ego’s “will” can only seem to be true in a dream. Dreams are not real. But when we are dreaming, we perceive the dream as real. That is why we need help from beyond the dream to awaken to the Will we share with God.

We will there be Light when we accept God’s Will as ours. As we accept the Will God shared with us, we automatically join in His Will to extend His Light. In this joining we accept His Love and Light as our own, which automatically leads to extending Love and Light. That is our function as God’s Son. When we remind ourselves that we will there be Light and that our Will is the same as God’s, we accept the true Self that God created us to be. We awaken from the dream.

The Only Thoughts We Share with God

Your Self retains Its Thoughts, and they remain within your mind and in the Mind of God. The Holy Spirit holds salvation in your mind, and offers it the way to peace. Salvation is a thought you share with God…

Salvation comes from [your] one Self through Him [Holy Spirit] Who is the Bridge between your mind and It. Wait patiently, and let Him speak to you about your Self, and what your mind can do, restored to It and free to serve Its Will.

Begin with saying this:

Salvation comes from my one Self. Its Thoughts are mine to use.

Then seek Its Thoughts, and claim them as your own. These are your own real thoughts you have denied, and let your mind go wandering in a world of dreams, to find illusions in their place. Here are your thoughts, the only ones you have. Salvation is among them; find it there. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 96, W-pI.96.7:1-3;8:3-9:7. See also ACIM Lesson 96 Insights.)

Our only real Thoughts are Thoughts we share with God. They are Thoughts that extend Love just as we are God’s Thought of extending Himself. Only Thoughts of Love are real. They are the only Thoughts we share with God.

In the ego’s dream of separation, we seem to have private thoughts, separate and distinct from everyone else. But these are just dream images and the dream is not real. It is this dream of separation from which we need to be saved. The Holy Spirit in our mind is the Bridge to help us return to the loving Thoughts of unity that our one Self shares with God.

Today we practice holding our mind open to the Holy Spirit’s help to recognize the Thoughts of Love already in our mind, which have been hidden behind the veil of the dream. If we let Him, His Light will dispel the veil and awaken us to the loving Thoughts we share with God.

Crossing the Bridge to Heaven

The Holy Spirit mediates between illusions and the truth. Since He must bridge the gap between reality and dreams, perception leads to knowledge through the grace that God has given [the Holy Spirit], to be His gift to everyone who turns to Him for truth. Across the bridge that He provides are dreams all carried to the truth, to be dispelled before the light of knowledge. There are sights and sounds forever laid aside. And where they were per­ceived before, forgiveness has made possible perception’s tran­quil end.

The goal the Holy Spirit’s teaching sets is just this end of dreams. For sights and sounds must be translated from the witnesses of fear to those of love. And when this [translation] is entirely accomplished, learning has achieved the only goal it has in truth. For learning, as the Holy Spirit guides it to the outcome He perceives for it, becomes the means to go beyond itself, to be replaced by the eternal truth. Like getting so engrossed in a movie we are watching that we react to what we see as if it were real, we react to our dream world as though the it is real. We believe we are in the dream, not realizing that the characters and situations in the dream are projections from our own mind. The dream seems to be self-perpetuating and beyond our control. So we need help from beyond the dream to help us awaken.

The Holy Spirit recognizes we are dreaming and offers us familiar images which the ego used to bind us to the world of separation for His holy purpose. His purpose is to lead us away from the ego’s lies to the truth of our oneness in the Heart of Love. The images we have used to engender fear and conflict become images calling us to respond with Love. As we let go of our judgments we learn that the Love’s oneness is our Home. Today we ask the Holy Spirit to teach us His perceptions in place of our own.

Awakening to the Love We Are

The real world holds a counterpart for each unhappy thought reflected in your world; a sure correction for the sights of fear and sounds of battle which your world contains. The real world shows a world seen differently, through quiet eyes and with a mind at peace. Nothing but rest is there. There are no cries of pain and sorrow heard, for nothing there remains outside forgiveness. And the sights are gentle. Only happy sights and sounds can reach the mind that has forgiven itself.

The real world is the symbol that the dream of sin and guilt is over, and God’s Son no longer sleeps. His waking eyes perceive the sure reflection of his Father’s Love; the certain promise that he is redeemed. The real world signifies the end of time, for its perception makes time purposeless. The ego’s world reflects the belief that separation is real and guilt is justified. The real world is seen through loving eyes, which see only the innocence of Love. Belief in separation creates a veil that interferes with the clear vision of our true Self. Like cataracts cloud our seeing in the world, unforgiveness interferes with Christ’s vision.

We release this interference through forgiveness — letting go of our judgments. When all judgments have been forgiven, we see only the real world reflected all around us. The quiet peace and joy of changeless Love is all we see, for we have awakened from the dream of separation. We have accepted God’s gifts to His Son and we are welcomed Home.

The Thought That Heals the World

[“I am as God created me” is] …all you need to let complete correction heal your mind, and give you perfect vision that will heal all the mistakes that any mind has made at any time or place. It is enough to heal the past and make the future free. It is enough to let the present be accepted as it is. It is enough to let time be the means for all the world to learn escape from time, and every change that time appears to bring in passing by.

In this one thought is all the past undone; the present saved to quietly extend into a timeless future. If you are as God created you, then there has been no separation of your mind from His, no split between your mind and other minds, and only unity within your own.

The healing power of today’s idea is limitless. It is the birthplace of all miracles, the great restorer of the truth to the awareness of the world. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 110, W-pI.110.2;4:1-5:2. See also ACIM Lesson 110 Insights.)

The ego world is splintered into many disconnected pieces, based on belief that separation is real. But what God created remains one with Him in the oneness of Love. Because only Love is real, the ego’s world cannot be real.

The lessons of the Course and God’s Teacher in our minds are focused on awakening us to the true Self God created one with Him. This Self knows only the oneness of Love. It is not divided against Itself. As we learn to accept this Self as our Identity, the past fades away, division disappears and we awaken to God’s peace and joy.

As we practice remembering “I am as God created me,” we recognize our brothers are one with us in the Self God created one with Him. This brings healing to every brother and the world. The perception of separation fades and we remember the Love we are.

Forgetting the Past Reveals Eternal Love

“Let me forget my brother’s past today.

“This is the thought that leads the way to You, and brings me to my goal. I cannot come to You without my brother. And to know my Source, I first must recognize what You created one with me. My brother’s is the hand that leads me on the way to You. His sins are in the past along with mine, and I am saved because the past is gone. Let me not cherish it within my heart, or I will lose the way to walk to You. My brother is my savior. Let me not attack the savior You have given me. But let me honor him who bears Your Name, and so remember that It is my own.

“Forgive me [Jesus], then, today. And you will know you have for­given me if you behold your brother in the light of holiness. He cannot be less holy than can I, and you can not be holier than he.” (W-pII.288)

Jesus represents the true Self of every brother, including our own. The ego projects its guilt by perceiving everyone as guilty of the “sin” of separating from our Creator. When we identify with the ego, we share its perceptions of guilt.

When we forgive, we let go of the ego’s projections of guilt. Judgment binds us to a past that does not exist in truth. To forgive Jesus is to forgive every brother, including ourselves. We no longer project our dream of a past onto the world. This frees us to look past the ego’s images of separation to the one Self the unites us all in the eternal Love of God. We practice this today.
