Remembering Christ, Our True Self

Christ is God’s Son as He created Him. He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another, and with God as well. He is the Thought which still abides within the Mind that is His Source. He has not left His holy home, nor lost the innocence in which He was created. He abides unchanged forever in the Mind of God.

Christ is the link that keeps you one with God, and guarantees that separation is no more than an illusion of despair, for hope forever will abide in Him. Your mind is part of His, and His of yours. [Christ] is the part in which God’s Answer lies; where all decisions are already made, and dreams are over. He remains untouched by anything the body’s eyes perceive. For though in Him His Father placed the means for your salvation, yet does He remain the Self Who, like His Father, knows no sin.

Home of the Holy Spirit, and at home in God alone, does Christ remain at peace within the Heaven of your holy mind. This is the only part of you that has reality in truth. The rest is dreams. Yet will these dreams be given unto Christ, to fade before His glory and reveal your holy Self, the Christ, to you at last. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 271, W-pII.6.1-3. Christ is the part of our mind that has never left our Home in God, and never will. No matter how much we buy into dreams of fear and separation, the Christ in us, our true Self, remains at Home in Love. This permanence guarantees that we will not and cannot change the Reality of What we are. The world of separation is a place of despair, guilt and fear. But it is based on an illusion that could never be true. We still have the means to remember our true Self, the Christ.

We need to practice bringing our perceptions to the Holy Spirit in our mind Who is the Voice of Christ. As we accept the reinterpretations from the Holy Spirit, we learn to see past the world of hopelessness. We see instead the face of Christ, the symbol of our eternal innocence. We see more clearly the real world of true forgiveness, where innocence is recognized as the only reality. When our forgiveness is complete and we see only the innocence of Christ’s face, we stand at the gate of Heaven, where God welcomes us Home.

Help to See the World of True Forgiveness

Arrogance makes an image of yourself that is not real. It is this image which quails and retreats in terror, as the Voice for God assures you that you have the strength, the wisdom and the holiness to go beyond all images. You are not weak, as is the image of yourself. You are not ignorant and helpless. Sin can not tarnish the truth in you, and misery can come not near the holy home of God.

All this the Voice for God relates to you. And as He speaks, the image [of separation] trembles and seeks to attack the threat it does not know, sensing its basis crumble. Let it go.

Do as God’s Voice directs. And if It asks a thing of you which seems impossible, remember Who it is that asks, and who would make denial. Then consider this; which is more likely to be right? The Voice that speaks for the Creator of all things, Who knows all things exactly as they are, or a distorted image of yourself, confused, bewildered, inconsistent and unsure of everything? Let not [the ego’s] voice direct you. Hear instead a certain Voice, which tells you of a function given you by your Creator Who remembers you, and urges that you now remember Him.

[God’s Voice] has Thoughts which answer every need His Son perceives, although He sees them not. For Love must give, and what is given in His Name takes on the form most useful in a world of form. The body we experience as ourself is a made up image based on belief in separation. It is an illusion because it is based on a belief that could never be true. Beliefs can change. The world of made up images we see is unstable because its foundation is unstable.

We free ourselves from this unstable and changeable world by letting go of the mistaken beliefs that are its foundation. The Voice for God is ever-present in our mind, offering us help to release the unstable illusion and return to the certainty of God’s changeless Love. This Help is very specific to help us undo the perceptions we mistakenly believe are true.

If we are willing to listen to this Voice, It will bring us specific answers to our perceived problems in exchange for perception of the real world, the world of true forgiveness, joy and peace. Today we practice willingness to receive the Help that sets us on the path to our Home in Love.

Let Love Guide Us Back to Love

There is nothing outside you. That is what you must ultimately learn, for it is the realization that the Kingdom of Heaven is restored to you. For God created only this, and He did not depart from it nor leave it separate from Himself. The Kingdom of Heaven is the dwelling place of the Son of God, who left not his Father and dwells not apart from Him. Heaven is not a place nor a condition. It is merely an awareness of perfect Oneness, and the knowledge that there is nothing else; nothing outside this Oneness, and nothing else within.

Minds are joined; bodies are not. Only by assigning to the mind the properties of the body does separation seem to be possible. And it is mind that seems to be fragmented and private and alone. Its guilt, which keeps it separate, is projected to the body, which suffers and dies because it is attacked to hold the separation in the mind, and let it not know its Identity.

The mind cannot attack, but it can deceive itself. And this is all it does when it believes it has attacked the body. It can project its guilt, but it will not lose it through projection. And though it clearly can misperceive the function of the body, it cannot change its function from what the Holy Spirit establishes it to be. The body was not made by love. Yet love does not condemn it and can use it lovingly, respecting what the Son of God has made and using it to save him from illusions. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.VI.1;3:1-4;4:3-8. The Holy Spirit is the part of our mind that remembers our unbreakable unity in the Mind of God. When we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide throughout the day, we are letting Love direct all the functions of the body. Under His direction, the body is used for the holy purpose of remembering we are in Heaven now and always.

Today let us practice pausing to let Love be our Guide. This is how we let the Holy Spirit’s perception replace the ego’s perception. This practice heals our mind of self-deception and restores it to its natural state as one with the Mind of God. It restores our awareness that we are eternally in Heaven (the Mind of God).

Shifting Our Attention to the Real World

Beyond this world there is a world I want.

Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace. Think you this world can offer that to you?

Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time?

Value not [the little things of the world], and they will disappear. Esteem them, and they will seem real to you.

Such is the choice. What loss can be for you in choosing not to value nothingness? This world holds nothing that you really want, but what you choose instead you want indeed! Let it be given you today. It waits but for your choosing it, to take the place of all the things you seek but do not want.

When we chose to accept the idea of separation, we chose to believe in an illusion of separation. What God creates is one and eternal. Only belief in illusions can make time and separation seem real. Illusions have no meaning or substance of their own. They are made-up images in our mind that only seem real because of our belief in them. This belief blocks our awareness of our Reality in eternal Love, peace and joy. We are deceiving ourselves when we choose to believe illusions are real.

Beyond the world of illusions is the changeless Love of God with which we are eternally united. God gave us all of Himself with His Thought that created His Son. Everything God is, His Son is. And His Son is our true Self.

The real world is the perception of our oneness in Love. It is this world we truly want. We become aware of this world when we let go of giving value to the little things of the world of separation. Reminding ourselves again and again that beyond the world we see is a world we really want teaches us to shift our attention from belief in illusions to the real world, where only Love is seen.

The Question That Leads to Love’s Certainty

There is a light in you which cannot die; whose presence is so holy that the world is sanctified because of you.”

This is the way salvation works. As you step back, the Light in you steps forward and encompasses the world. It heralds not the end of sin in punishment and death. In lightness and in laughter is sin gone, because its quaint absurdity is seen. It is a foolish thought, a silly dream, not frightening, ridiculous perhaps, but who would waste an instant in approach to God Himself for such a senseless whim?

Yet you have wasted many, many years on just this foolish thought. The past is gone, with all its fantasies. They keep you bound no longer. The approach to God is near.

“Who walks with me?” This question should be asked a thousand times a day, till certainty has ended doubting and established peace. Today let doubting cease. God speaks for you in answering your question with these words:

I walk with God in perfect holiness. I light the world, I light my mind and all the minds which God created one with me. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 156, W-pI.156.4:1;6:1-7:4;8. See also ACIM Lesson 156 Insights.)

The world we see is a reflection of what we believe we are. If we accept the ego belief that we are separate from the Source of Love and Light, we see the reflection of a loveless world. It is a world of fear and guilt defined by images of separation. Our true Self is Love and when we identify with Love, Its Light shines on the world we see. This Light reveals our unity with the same Light that is in every brother. Light always joins with Light as Love always joins with Love.

The answer to the question, “Who walks with me?” is the Light of Love within us and in every brother. We need to ask this question a thousand times a day because we need to reverse the habit of believing we are separate and alone, disconnected from eternal Love. It is a false belief that needs to be undone.

Asking this question opens our mind to the Answer: Love walks with us eternally. Each time we ask and accept the answer, the grip of our old, mistaken belief weakens. We become increasingly confident of our perfect safety in the changeless Love of God. This practice is a gift we give ourselves and all the world.

Choosing Heaven Instead of Hell

My holy brother, think of this awhile: The world you see does nothing. It has no effects at all. It merely represents your thoughts. And it will change entirely as you elect to change your mind, and choose the joy of God as what you really want. Your Self is radiant in this holy joy, unchanged, unchanging and unchangeable, forever and forever. And would you deny a little corner of your mind its own inheritance, and keep it as a hospital for pain; a sickly place where living things must come at last to die?

Pain is illusion; joy, reality. Pain is but sleep; joy is awakening. Pain is deception; joy alone is truth.

And so again we make the only choice that ever can be made; we choose between illusions and the truth, or pain and joy, or hell and Heaven. Let our gratitude unto our Teacher fill our hearts, as we are free to choose our joy instead of pain, our holiness in place of sin, the peace of God instead of conflict, and the light of Heaven for the darkness of the world. The world is a mirror of our thoughts and beliefs. If we believe we are separate, alone and disconnected from the limitless strength and Love of God, we perceive a fearful world of pain, loss and death. This perception is built upon a self-deception, a belief that could never be true. Having accepted this deception, there seems to be no way out of the dream of an endless cycle of pain and death. The way out of this dream cannot be found within the dream, which is self-maintaining.

In this insane dream, we are out of our right mind. But our right mind still contains the Teacher Who is ever present, ready to guide us on the path of awakening. With our Teacher’s help, we can learn to recognize the illusions of the dream for what they are. When illusions are recognized for what they are, they are easily dismissed, revealing the eternal presence of changeless, unchangeable Love.

Today we choose to welcome our inner Teacher’s kindly lessons which remind us that we remain God’s one Son, His extension of perfect Love.

Welcoming Light with Christ’s Vision

The Holy Spirit asks of you but this; bring to Him every secret you have locked away from Him. Open every door to Him, and bid Him enter the darkness and lighten it away. At your request He enters gladly. He brings the light to darkness if you make the darkness open to Him. But what you hide He cannot look upon. He sees for you, and unless you look with Him He cannot see. The vision of Christ is not for Him alone, but for Him with you. Bring, therefore, all your dark and secret thoughts to Him, and look upon them with Him. He holds the light, and you the darkness. They cannot coexist when both of You together look on them. His judgment must prevail, and He will give it to you as you join your perception to His.

The single vision which the Holy Spirit offers you will bring this oneness to your mind with clarity and brightness so intense you could not wish, for all the world, not to accept what God would have you have. (A Course in Miracles, T-14.VII.6;7:7. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The Holy Spirit cannot come where He is not welcome. As we practice bringing all our thoughts to Him with willingness to receive His help, His Light will shine away the darkness of belief in separation. Separation denies the Light of Love’s oneness. In every moment we have a choice. Do we want to maintain the illusion of a separate self with its private domain? Or would we welcome the Light that will show us the limitless Love that unites us with God’s oneness?

Today we dedicate to the practice of pausing to welcome the Holy Spirit to join His Vision with ours. With Him we will see past the ego’s dark shadows to the living Light of Love that shines in every brother. This is the one Self we are as God’s one Son. Here we find peace and safety. Here we find joy and the continuous flow of Love to Love.
