Remembering the Real World

There is a place in you where this whole world has been forgotten; where no memory of sin and of illusion linger still. There is a place in you which time has left, and echoes of eternity are heard. There is a resting place so still no sound except a hymn to Heaven rises up to gladden God the Father and the Son.

The changelessness of Heaven is in you, so deep within that nothing in this world but passes by, unnoticed and unseen. The still infinity of endless peace surrounds you gently in its soft embrace, so strong and quiet, tranquil in the might of its Creator, nothing can intrude upon the sacred Son of God within.

Nothing is asked of you but to accept the changeless and eternal that abide in him, for your Identity is there. The peace in you can but be found in him. And every thought of love you offer him but brings you nearer to your wakening to peace eternal and to endless joy.

Forgiving dreams are means to step aside from dreaming of a world outside yourself. And leading finally beyond all dreams, unto the peace of everlasting life. (A Course in Miracles, T-29.V.1:1-3;2:3-4; 3:3-5;8:5-6. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

The changeless of God’s peace is in us eternally. To experience this peace we need to forgive or let go of dreams of fear and guilt. We need to look past the dreams thoughts of separation show us. Through forgiveness our dreams become happy dreams in which we see the Love in our brothers instead of hate. Through forgiveness we learn to see the real world of innocence and Love.

As we let the dream of the real world replace the dreams of separation, we stand at the gates of Heaven, where we are welcomed into peace eternal. This is the purpose the Holy Spirit gives to every dream that leads us Home.

Choosing Everything in Place of Nothing

The full acceptance of salvation as your only function necessarily entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself.

Today’s idea offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began.

…focus on [the] importance to you [of recognizing salvation as your only function], the relief its acceptance will bring you by resolving your conflicts once and for all, and the extent to which you really want salvation in spite of your own foolish ideas to the contrary.

Complexity and conflict are inevitable as long as we believe in the ego thought system of separation and differences. Nothing in the ego thought system is real. Believing we have to choose between unreal alternatives is confusing and frightening. What is unreal has no meaning of its own. So when we are choosing between unreal alternatives we are trying to choose between made up meanings which are by their nature unstable.

The Course is teaching us that our only meaningful choice is between the real and the unreal. Since the unreal does not exist, this is a choice between everything and nothing. When the true alternative is recognized, the choice is obvious.

Accepting salvation as our only function means making the choice for reality and disregarding the nothingness of the ego thought system. To do this we must learn to recognize the unreality of the ego. For this the Holy Spirit is our Teacher and our Guide to fulfill our only function.

Forgiveness Welcomes Heaven Now

Dwell not upon the past today. Keep a completely open mind, washed of all past ideas and clean of every concept you have made. You have forgiven the world today. You can look upon it now as if you never saw it before. You do not know yet what it looks like. You merely wait to have it shown to you.

Give thanks for mercy and the Love of God. Rejoice in the power of forgiveness to heal your sight completely. Be confident that on this day there is a new beginning. Without the darkness of the past upon your eyes, you cannot fail to see today. And what you see will be so welcome that you will gladly extend today forever.

We dedicate this day to the serenity in which God would have you be. Keep it in your awareness of yourself and see it everywhere today, as we celebrate the beginning of your vision and the sight of the real world, which has come to replace the unforgiven world you thought was real. If we are willing, we can be shown what it would be like if we forgive the world entirely. The forgiven world is a world of Light because no shadows of the past are carried along to darken the present moment. When we forgive, we cut our ties to the past, which does not exist except in imaginings that cannot be real now.

The key to forgiveness is willingness to let the past go. We do not really want to carry pain and suffering with us from the past. We do not really want to feel isolated and separate. We do not really want to live in a world of fear and guilt. This is not our Home. 

Today we dedicate to letting the past go. Today we happily accept the Holy Spirit’s help to overlook the past and focus on the brilliance of Love in the present. This is where we are at Home. This is where we are at peace. This is where we share God’s joy. We are willing to accept it now.

Changing Our Beliefs Changes Our World

…all thoughts have power. They will either make a false world or lead me to the real one. But thoughts cannot be without effects. As the world I see arises from my thinking errors, so will the real world rise before my eyes as I let my errors be corrected.

What I see witnesses to what I think. If I did not think I would not exist, because life is thought. Let me look on the world I see as the representation of my own state of mind. I know that my state of mind can change. And so I also know the world I see can change as well.

As my thoughts of separation call to the separation thoughts of others, so my real thoughts awaken the real thoughts in them. And the world my real thoughts show me will dawn on their sight as well as mine. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 54, W-pI.54.1:1-5;2:2-6;3:6-7. See also ACIM Lesson 54 Insights.)

In the practice of dream interpretation it is recognized that the images in our dreams represent our thoughts and beliefs. By learning to interpret the images we can learn about beliefs we carry that we have hidden away. Likewise the world we see in our “waking” state is also a representation of what we believe.

With the Holy Spirit’s help we can learn to interpret what we see in the world as keys to understanding our hidden beliefs that make the world seem real. We all know from experience that our beliefs can change. Because the ego thought system is one of separation and isolation, we don’t realize that when we change our beliefs, everyone is affected.

The Holy Spirit remembers for us that we remain united with the truth in everyone. As we learn how to see the world with the Holy Spirit’s vision, we bring unity to the world as we heal our mistaken belief in isolation and separation. The images of separation grow dimmer as the Light of Love that unites us grows stronger in our awareness. Today we choose the Holy Spirit’s interpretation of the world we see.

Being a Messenger of Love

It is not our part to judge our worth, nor can we know what role is best for us; what we can do within a larger plan we cannot see in its entirety.

Whatever your appointed role may be, it was selected by the Voice for God, Whose function is to speak for you as well. Seeing your strengths exactly as they are, and equally aware of where they can be best applied, for what, to whom and when, He chooses and accepts your part for you. He does not work without your own consent. But He is not deceived in what you are, and listens only to His Voice in you.

We practice giving Him what He would have, that we may recognize His gifts to us. He needs our voice that He may speak through us. He needs our hands to hold His messages, and carry them to those whom He appoints. He needs our feet to bring us where He wills, that those who wait in misery may be at last delivered. And He needs our will united with His Own, that we may be the true receivers of the gifts He gives. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 154, W-pI.154.1:5;2;11. See also ACIM Lesson 154 Insights.)

As we experience the blessing of learning the lessons from A Course in Miracles, it is natural to want to share those blessings. Love naturally wants to extend Itself.

It is important that we not decide on our own the form in which we share the blessing. While we are still identified with a body, our perception is severely limited. On our own we do not know what is truly helpful. But the Holy Spirit within our minds sees all things truly. He knows what is truly helpful. He knows how to extend messages of Love that will bless rather than foster fear.

Our job is to maintain our identification with Love and be Love’s presence in our thoughts, words and actions. For some of us there may be no external forms identifiable as being an aspect of ministry. But through our thoughts and inner vision, we bring messages of Love. Others may be led to more overt actions. Always we must let Holy Spirit guide us in each moment. This is how we are truly helpful and serve as messengers of Love.

Being God’s Messenger of Love

We look past dreams today, and recognize that we need no defense because we are created unassailable, without all thought or wish or dream in which attack has any meaning. Now we cannot fear, for we have left all fearful thoughts behind. And in defenselessness we stand secure, serenely certain of our safety now, sure of salvation; sure we will fulfill our chosen purpose, as our ministry extends its holy blessing through the world.

Be still a moment, and in silence think how holy is your purpose, how secure you rest, untouchable within its light. God’s ministers have chosen that the truth be with them. Who is holier than they? Who could be surer that his happiness is fully guaranteed? And who could be more mightily protected? What defense could possibly be needed by the ones who are among the chosen ones of God, by His election and their own as well?

It is the function of God’s ministers to help their brothers choose as they have done. God has elected all, but few have come to realize His Will is but their own. And while you fail to teach what you have learned, salvation waits and darkness holds the world in grim imprisonment. Nor will you learn that light has come to you, and your escape has been accomplished. For you will not see the light, until you offer it to all your brothers. As they take it from your hands, so will you recognize it as your own. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 153, W-pI.153:9-11. See also ACIM Lesson 153 Insights.)

Happiness comes with fulfilling our purpose. The fundamental purpose we all share is to bring the Light of truth to the world. The form in which this is accomplished under Holy Spirit’s guidance is unique for each individual in the world. The Holy Spirit always uses our worldly skills and experiences on behalf of extending truth into the world of illusions.

By accepting Holy Spirit’s lead through the day we are accepting what God has chosen for us — to be His messenger of Love and Light. With this practice we learn that we have all of His Love. We know the Light has come. God’s joy is ours. Our joy is complete when we wholly accept we are one with all our brothers.

The Foundation of True Forgiveness

…if you only catch a tiny glimpse of the release that lies in [all that I give is given to myself], this is a day of glory for the world.

It is the thought by which forgiveness takes its proper place in your priorities. It is the thought that will release your mind from every bar to what forgiveness means, and let you realize its worth to you.

…seek sanctuary in the quiet place where thoughts are changed and false beliefs laid by. Repeat [“all that I give is given to myself”], and ask for help in understanding what it really means. Be willing to be taught. Be glad to hear the Voice of truth and healing speak to you, and you will understand the words He speaks, and recognize He speaks your words to you. The basis of true forgiveness is the recognition that nothing can happen to change or harm God’s Son. To the part of our mind that believes separation is real, this is impossible. So we need to turn to the Holy Spirit, the part of our mind that knows the truth, for help to recognize that harm is impossible and nothing has happened to separate us from eternal Love.

When we are willing to receive the Holy Spirit’s lesson and see with His vision that there is nothing to forgive because nothing happened, forgiveness is automatic. We are able to see that only the Love in our brothers is true. We are able to see our brother as one with us, wholly harmless and truly loving. This is why giving and receiving are the same. When we see the love in our brothers, we experience the love in ourselves.
