Choosing Holy Spirit’s Loving Lessons

We stand together, Christ and I, in peace And certainty of purpose. And in Him Is His Creator, as He is in me.

My oneness with the Christ establishes me as Your Son, beyond the reach of time, and wholly free of every law but Yours. I have no self except the Christ in me. I have no purpose but His Own. And He is like His Father. Thus must I be one with You [Father] as well as Him [Christ]. For who is Christ except Your Son as You created Him? And what am I except the Christ in me? A body, with all that is associated with it, is not our identity. Our true Identity is Christ, the Son of God. This Identity is free of all limitations because it is unified in the oneness of Love. Nothing but Love is real.

To know the peace and joy of our true Self, we need to let go of the beliefs that bind us to the ego and the body, its principal image of separation. This is the purpose of forgiveness. When we let go of a belief in limitation or separation, we open our mind to accept that Love is our only Reality.

Our belief in the ego as our identity is deeply entrenched, hidden under layers of denial. Fortunately the Holy Spirit has a personalized curriculum to teach us to recognize our mistaken beliefs and let them go. He can use every perception in every moment to help us heal our misperceptions if we let Him be our Guide.

Our prayer today: Holy Spirit, I am willing to accept Your help. I choose Your plan for me today, not my own. I want to learn Your lessons in Love, for I want to remember my true Identity.

The Journey Home to Love

The body is a fence the Son of God imagines he has built, to separate parts of his Self from other parts. It is within this fence he thinks he lives, to die as it decays and crumbles. For within this fence he thinks that he is safe from love. Identifying with his safety, he regards himself as what his safety is. How else could he be certain he remains within the body, keeping love outside?

But we can change the purpose that the body will obey by changing what we think that it is for.

The body is the means by which God’s Son returns to sanity. Though it was made to fence him into hell without escape, yet has the goal of Heaven been exchanged for the pursuit of hell. The Son of God extends his hand to reach his brother, and to help him walk along the road with him. Now is the body holy.

Love is your safety. Fear does not exist. Identify with love, and you are safe. Identify with love, and you are home. Identify with love, and find your Self. (A Course in Miracles Workbook What Is the Body?, W-pII.5.1;3:5-4:4;5:4-8. See also ACIM Lesson Insights: What Is the body?.)

The body is so real to us that it doesn’t seem we are imagining it. It doesn’t seem that it is a defense against Love. In fact it seems that throughout the body’s life we are searching for Love. But because the ego defends against Love, all our searching under its direction comes up empty. At best we obtain substitutes for Love that do not fully satisfy and are not eternal. The fact that the ego’s substitutes for Love never last is a sure sign that they are not real. As long as we think the body is our identity, the ego’s goal of hiding from Love is satisfied.

Still we search for Love because we hear the Voice of our true Self calling us to return to Love. Love is our Home. Nothing but the changelessness of our eternal Home will ever satisfy. As we let the Holy Spirit’s purpose replace the ego’s purpose for the body, it becomes an instrument used to bring Love into the world where Love’s oneness is denied. When we identify with our true Self instead of the ego, the body becomes holy. It is used to extend Love instead of deny It.

Today is a perfect day to choose the Love of our true Self as our Identity and become messengers of Love in the world. This is the journey that leads us Home to Love.

Remembering Our Home in Heaven

Christ’s is the vision I will use today.

Each day, each hour, every instant, I am choosing what I want to look upon, the sounds I want to hear, the witnesses to what I want to be the truth for me. Today I choose to look upon what Christ would have me see, to listen to God’s Voice, and seek the Witnesses to what is true in God’s creation. In Christ’s sight, the world and God’s creation meet, and as they come together all perception disappears. His kindly sight redeems the world from death, for nothing that He looks on but must live, remembering the Father and the Son; Creator and creation unified.

Father, Christ’s vision is the way to You. What He beholds invites Your memory to be restored to me. And this I choose, to be what I would look upon today. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 271, W-pII.271. See also ACIM Lesson 271 Insights.)

In every instant we make a choice between two perceptions. If we choose to believe what the body’s eyes show us, we perceive separation, differences, lack, loss and vulnerability. If we choose the perception of Christ’s vision, we see the innocence of Love that unifies us with our brothers. We see a world of kindness, helpfulness and innocence. We feel the safety that comes with the assurance that our true Self, created by Love, is changeless and eternal.

One choice brings fear and guilt. The other choice brings Love, peace and joy, for it brings us to a state of mind so close to Heaven that the images seen by the body’s eyes fade away. We remember we are eternally at Home in Heaven.

Today we practice welcoming Christ’s vision by asking the Holy Spirit to help us see beyond the images of the world to the presence of Love’s oneness.

Sharing Love’s Joy by Giving It

Let this day be a day of stillness and of quiet listening. Your Father wills you hear His Word today. He calls to you from deep within your mind where He abides. Hear Him today. No peace is possible until His Word is heard around the world; until your mind, in quiet listening, accepts the message that the world must hear to usher in the quiet time of peace.

This world will change through you. No other means can save it, for God’s plan is simply this: The Son of God is free to save himself, given the Word of God [Holy Spirit] to be his Guide, forever in his mind and at his side to lead him surely to his Father’s house by his own will, forever free as God’s. He is not led by force, but only love. He is not judged, but only sanctified. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 125, W-pI.125.1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 125 Insights.)

To hear the Voice for God, we need to turn our attention away from the chaos of the world. The peace of God is always within us, ready to be welcomed into our awareness. We quiet our minds by letting the thoughts of the world pass by without giving them attention. We remember that we really want the peace of God. We want to receive the guidance of His Voice, confident that He will lead us to forgive the thoughts that disturb our peace.

We are worthy of taking time to step back from the world and to enter the quiet place in our mind where we remember that we are eternally safe in God. We welcome the message from His Voice that tells us of the true Self we share with all our brothers and that is at Home in the Heart of God. In the oneness of this one Self, conflict and loss are impossible. We are free to share the Love’s joy as we give the gift of Love we have accepted. We let Love be our Guide throughout the day.

Returning to the Heart of Love

What but Christ’s vision would I use today, when it can offer me a day in which I see a world so like to Heaven that an ancient memory returns to me? Today I can forget the world I made. Today I can go past all fear, and be restored to love and holiness and peace. Today I am redeemed, and born anew into a world of mercy and of care; of loving kindness and the peace of God.

And so, our Father, we return to You, remembering we never went away; remembering Your holy gifts to us. In gratitude and thankfulness we come, with empty hands and open hearts and minds, asking but what You give. We cannot make an offering sufficient for Your Son. But in Your Love the gift of Christ is his. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 306, W-pII.306. See also ACIM Lesson 306 Insights.)

How do we come to our Father with empty hands and open hearts? We have to fully accept that we do not know what anything in the world means. Our judgments and opinions separate us from our brothers, closing our hearts against the unity of Love that joins us with all that is real. Judgments fill our hands with meaningless illusions that do not leave room to receive the gift of truth.

The process of opening our hearts and emptying our hands is the practice of forgiveness. As we let go of our judgments, the veil of separation weakens and we begin to see through it to the eternal presence of changeless Love.

The appeal of happiness and peace that comes with this Love grows stronger. We are less and less willing to settle for the illusions of the ego. All we really want is the gift of Christ’s vision — the recognition that our true Self has always had and still has all of God’s gifts. We accept Christ’s vision for we have opened our hands to receive the gift of oneness and opened our hearts to welcome our brothers as part of our one Self.

Recognizing Our Eternal Presence in Love

Your Friend [Holy Spirit] goes with you. You are not alone. No one who calls on Him can call in vain. Whatever troubles you, be certain that He has the answer, and will gladly give it to you, if you simply turn to Him and ask it of Him. He will not withhold all answers that you need for anything that seems to trouble you. He knows the way to solve all problems, and resolve all doubts. His certainty is yours. You need but ask it of Him, and it will be given you.

Henceforth, hear but the Voice for God and for your Self when you retire from the world, to seek reality instead. He will direct your efforts, telling you exactly what to do, how to direct your mind, and when to come to Him in silence, asking for His sure direction and His certain Word. His is the Word that God has given you. His is the Word you chose to be your own.

And now I place you in His hands, to be His faithful follower, with Him as Guide through every difficulty and all pain that you may think is real. …Now you walk with Him, as certain as is He of where you go; as sure as He of how you should proceed; as confident as He is of the goal, and of your safe arrival in the end.

We have a Guide Whose sole purpose is to lead us back to the full remembrance of the Self that God created one with Him. This is the Self that is eternally at peace, continuously extending Love and always sharing God’s joy.

If we experience anything other than this, we have chosen to believe another guide whose purpose is to deny God and all His Love. This guide would lead us to death, the ultimate symbol that it is right and God is wrong about what you are. It “proves” that separation is real. But only our belief in this guide makes separation and death seem real. No matter what appearances are in the world, our true Self remains unchanged. In truth we remain as God created us.

No matter how real the world seems to us, we can choose to give our attention to the Guide God gave us to lead us out of the ego’s made-up hell and back to our Home in Love Which we never left in truth. This Guide is like a personal Tutor. He sees our illusions, but does not believe them. His curriculum teaches us how to step back from illusions. With His help, we free ourselves from the ego’s limitations by learning to overlook the world’s appearances and recognize the eternal presence of Love in us and all around us. This is our Home in truth.

Our True Reality Is Changeless Love

Reality is changeless. It is this that makes it real, and keeps it separate from all appearances. It must transcend all form to be itself. It cannot change.

The miracle is means to demonstrate that all appearances can change because they are appearances, and cannot have the changelessness reality entails. The miracle attests salvation from appearances by showing they can change. Your brother has a changelessness in him beyond appearance and deception, both. It is obscured by changing views of him that you perceive as his reality. The happy dream about him takes the form of the appearance of his perfect health, his perfect freedom from all forms of lack, and safety from disaster of all kinds. The miracle is proof he is not bound by loss or suffering in any form, because it can so easily be changed. This demonstrates that [form] was never real, and could not stem from his reality. For that is changeless, and has no effects that anything in Heaven or on earth could ever alter. But appearances are shown to be unreal because they change.

Because reality is changeless is a miracle already there to heal all things that change, and offer them to you to see in happy form, devoid of fear. (A Course in Miracles, T-30.VIII.1:6-9;2;5:1. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

In the world our brothers appear in billions of forms. But beyond all bodies, all forms, is changeless Love. To welcome the miracle that changes our perception, we must be willing to let the Holy Spirit show us the Love that is beyond all form.

When we accept this Help, the appearances of form in the world become happy expressions of changeless Love. These happy forms become a bridge leading from the limitations and divisions of the world we have been perceiving to the Love of our Home in Heaven. It is a blessed replacement of forms of fear and loss by the eternal abundance of Love eternal. The acceptance of Reality as changeless awakens us to our Home in Heaven.

Today let us remind ourselves frequently that our true Reality is changeless Love.
