Awakening to Eternal Love

God is my strength. Vision is His gift. Let me not look to my own eyes to see today. Let me be willing to exchange my pitiful illusion of seeing for the vision that is given by God. Christ’s vision is His gift, and He has given it to me. Let me call upon this gift today, so that this day may help me to understand eternity.

God is my Source. I cannot see apart from Him. I can see what God wants me to see. I cannot see anything else. Beyond His Will lie only illusions. It is these I choose when I think I can see apart from Him. It is these I choose when I try to see through the body’s eyes. Yet the vision of Christ has been given me to replace them. It is through this vision that I choose to see.

God is the light in which I see. I cannot see in darkness. God is the only light. Therefore, if I am to see, it must be through Him. I have tried to define what seeing is, and I have been wrong. Now it is given me to under­stand that God is the light in which I see. Let me welcome vision and the happy world it will show me. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 59, W-pI.59.2-4. What we see through the body’s eyes seems so real. But this “reality” comes only with our choice to believe in a false image of what we are. We are not a body. The body is part of the dream of being separate from our Creator. We wake up from the dream by giving priority to Christ’s vision and not giving credence to what the body’s eyes see.

The foundation of Christ’s vision is eternal Love. From this standpoint, Christ’s vision sees beyond the images of the dream to the Light of Love that is everywhere. Love is innocent because It can do no harm. Love only extends Itself. When we choose Christ’s vision, we choose Its peace and happiness. We walk in gratitude with Love by choosing to withdraw our investment in the dream and welcoming the Holy Spirit as our Guide in seeing.

He will help us see with Christ’s vision. This vision helps us see the innocence of Love and forgive the mistaken belief that harm or loss is possible. Each time we choose the Holy Spirit’s help and accept His gift of vision, we open our hearts to the peace of God. We awaken from the loveless dream to the eternity of changeless Love.

Finding the World of Perfect Peace

To be one is to be of one mind or will. When the Will of the Sonship and the Father are One, their perfect accord is Heaven.

Nothing can prevail against a Son of God who commends his spirit into the Hands of his Father. By doing this the mind awakens from its sleep and remembers its Creator. All sense of separation disappears.

The way to correct distortions is to withdraw your faith in them and invest it only in what is true. You cannot make untruth true. If you are willing to accept what is true in everything you perceive, you let it be true for you. Truth overcomes all error, and those who live in error and emptiness can never find lasting solace. If you perceive truly you are cancelling out misperceptions in yourself and in others simultaneously. Because you see them as they are, you offer them your acceptance of their truth so they can accept it for themselves. This is the healing that the miracle induces. Believing we are disconnected from God’s Love causes an unsettled feeling, ranging from mild discomfort to rage or terror. This is because we are believing in a dream of a false identity that is disconnected from Love’s oneness. Without the oneness of Love, it feels like we are living in a world with myriad potential opposing forces from which we must protect ourselves. There is nothing stable in this world that we can trust.

Thankfully there is a world of true perception we can count on to be changeless, stable and eternal. True perception comes from accepting the Love we are, our true Self, united as God’s one Son. This oneness is eternal and changeless. This world’s changelessness brings peace with it, for we can trust the reality of Love’s innocence. Those who know they are only Love know they are innocent. From this point of certainty we see truly. We see the innocence in our brothers. Where innocence is accepted without exception, we know we are safe and are at peace. We remember Heaven.

Today we choose the Holy Spirit in our mind, Who represents our true Self, to guide our perceptions, for we would see with the Light of Love.

Remember Love. There Is Nothing Else.

To forgive is merely to remember only the loving thoughts you gave in the past, and those that were given you. All the rest must be forgotten. Forgiveness is a selective remembering, based not on your selection. For the shadow figures you would make immortal are “enemies” of reality. Be willing to forgive the Son of God for what he did not do. The shadow figures are the witnesses you bring with you to demonstrate he did what he did not. Because you bring them, you will hear them. And you who keep them by your own selection do not understand how they came into your mind, and what their purpose is. [These shadow figures] represent the evil that you think was done to you. You bring them with you only that you may return evil for evil, hoping that their witness will enable you to think guiltily of another and not harm yourself. They speak so clearly for the separation that no one not obsessed with keeping separation could hear them. They offer you the “reasons” why you should enter into unholy alliances to support the ego’s goals, and make your relationships the witness to its power. (A Course in Miracles, T-17.III.1. The Holy Spirit has a long memory. He remembers only one thing: Eternal Love. There is nothing else to remember. When we let the Holy Spirit select for us What to remember, we will remember only Love. When we think of a brother, we will think of the Love he as expressed, his kindness, appreciation, gentleness, strength and empathy. We will remember how grateful we are for his companionship on our journey of awakening to our unity in Love.

As we remember the Love that our brother embodies, the shadows of the past fade away. We remember that all our brother ever did was be one with us in eternal Love. When all the shadows have been forgotten, we remember Heaven. We remember our Father’s Love for us and share His blessing with every brother. We are at peace and filled with joy, for we have realized that we remain Love as we were created.

How to Experience the Love We Are

To give is to receive. Today we will attempt to offer peace to everyone, and see how quickly peace returns to us. Light is tranquility, and in that peace is vision given us, and we can see.

So we begin the practice periods with the instruction for today, and say:

To give and to receive are one in truth.
I will receive what I am giving now.

Then close your eyes, and for five minutes think of what you would hold out to everyone, to have it yours. You might, for instance, say:

To everyone I offer quietness.
To everyone I offer peace of mind.
To everyone I offer gentleness.

Say each one slowly and then pause a while, expecting to receive the gift you gave. And it will come to you in the amount in which you gave it. You will find you have exact return, for that is what you asked. It might be helpful, too, to think of one to whom to give your gifts. He represents the others, and through him you give to all.” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 108, W-pI.108.7:3-9:5. See also ACIM Lesson 108 Insights.)

The Light of Love is in our mind because our true Self dwells in the Mind of Love. The body’s eyes cannot see this Light. But the vision of our true Self sees with this Light, seeing only Love. Love is everywhere to be seen because only Love is real.

Today’s practice begins with going to the peace of our true Self within. It is from this peace that the Light of Love shines. This Light is a beacon that reveals the Love in our brothers. Love automatically joins with Love, because that is what It does. In this joining, we naturally give the gift of Love. We offer kindness, helpfulness, compassion, appreciation, peace and happiness. This is our natural way of being.

As we give this to our brothers, we are reminded of What we are. Our gift is returned to us in the measure of what we accept in our Self. The Love we experience is limited only by our beliefs in limited love. Today’s practice will help us let go of those limitations and experience the Love we are.

Bringing Justice to the World

Justice is the divine correction for injustice. Injustice [separation] is the basis for all the judgments of the world. Justice corrects the interpretations to which injustice gives rise, and cancels them out.

Justice, like its opposite, is an interpretation. It is, however, the one interpretation that leads to truth [oneness].

Pray for God’s justice, and do not confuse His mercy with your own insanity. Perception can make whatever picture the mind desires to see. Remember this. In this lies either Heaven or hell, as you elect. God’s justice points to Heaven just because it is entirely impartial. It accepts all evidence that is brought before it, omitting nothing and assessing nothing as separate and apart from all the rest. From this one standpoint does it judge, and this alone. Here all attack and condemnation becomes meaningless and indefensible. Perception rests, the mind is still, and light returns again. Vision is now restored. What had been lost has now been found. The peace of God descends on all the world, and we can see. And we can see! (A Course in Miracles, M-19.1:1-3;2:1-2;5)

It is helpful to remember that what is divine is of God and is therefore in the oneness of Love. Oneness is entirely impartial because all it sees is one and the same. Justice therefore sees only the reality of Love’s oneness.

Happiness and peace of mind come with letting go of all judgment, which comes from believing there are differences, which could only seem to be true if we believe separation is real. Injustice is the inevitable result of choosing the ego’s belief in separation as our guide. This belief hides the reality of our brothers and our Self from our awareness.

When we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide, He will teach us to recognize the forms of the world we see have no value. To perceive a brother as a body is to be unjust to him. It is seeing him as limited to form instead of seeing the limitless Love that is the truth in him. The Holy Spirit will show us the truth in our brother when we are willing to set disregard the ego’s images and welcome the vision that reveals the eternal presence of Love. This vision is just, for it has judged against the belief in separation and welcomed the truth.

Today we dedicate to choosing the Holy Spirit as our Guide that we may bring His justice to the world, for we would see the truth.

Learning True Forgiveness

There is a very simple way to find the door to true forgiveness, and perceive it open wide in welcome. When you feel that you are tempted to accuse someone of sin in any form, do not allow your mind to dwell on what you think he did, for that is self-deception. Ask instead, “Would I accuse myself of doing this?”

Thus will you see alternatives for choice in terms that render choosing meaningful, and keep your mind as free of guilt and pain as God Himself intended it to be, and as it is in truth. It is but lies that would condemn. In truth is innocence the only thing there is. Forgiveness stands between illusions and the truth; be­tween the world you see and that which lies beyond; between the hell of guilt and Heaven’s gate.

Across this bridge [of true forgiveness], as powerful as love which laid its blessing on it, are all dreams of evil and of hatred and attack brought silently to truth. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 134, W-pI.134.9:1-11:1. See also ACIM Lesson 134 Insights.)

When we are tempted to judge another, we need to answer the question, “Would I accuse myself of doing this?” with complete honesty. This means we must ask the Holy Spirit for help with this answer, for the ego offers only self deception. “The ego is nothing more than a part of your belief about yourself.” (T-4.VI.1:6) Its answers are always based on a false belief.

If we ask the Holy Spirit’s help with this answer, He will show us how our projection on another is a reflection of our belief about what we are. The Holy Spirit is not deceived by the form of the error perceived in a brother. The ego deceives with form that has no real content. The Holy Spirit looks beyond the form to show us our mistaken beliefs and the truth beyond them.

As He shows us our mistaken belief, His vision reveals the truth of our changelessness in God’s Love. He knows that we are Love and nothing else, united with our Creator. By joining with the Holy Spirit to see beyond the form, we learn that nothing has happened to harm or change God’s Son, our true Self. Now forgiveness comes easy, for we recognize there is truly nothing to forgive.

Investing in the Reality of Love

The mind which means that all it wants is peace must join with other minds, for that is how peace is obtained. And when the wish for peace is genuine, the means for finding it is given, in a form each mind that seeks for it in honesty can understand. Whatever form the lesson takes is planned for him in such a way that he can not mistake it, if his asking is sincere. But if he asks without sincerity, there is no form in which the lesson will meet with acceptance and be truly learned.

We want the peace of God. This is no idle wish. These words do not request another dream be given us. They do not ask for compromise, nor try to make another bargain in the hope that there may yet be one that can succeed where all the rest have failed. To mean these words acknowl­edges illusions are in vain, requesting the eternal in the place of shifting dreams which seem to change in what they offer, but are one in nothingness. Any time we are not at peace, we are receiving a signal that we have chosen against the peace of God. If we let that irritation, resentment, guilt or judgment of any kind continue, we are choosing illusions in place of the peace of God. We are choosing against our true Self by continuing to follow the ego’s dictates.

But we can choose differently. When we recognize something is disturbing our peace, we can choose the Holy Spirit’s perception in place of the ego’s. The Holy Spirit will show us, in a way that we can grasp and accept, how to see that no harm really happened. There is no true justification for lack of peace. It is only the effect of choosing the ego’s beliefs instead of the truth offered by the Holy Spirit: Only Love is real.

We are so invested in our identification with the ego that the things we see and experience in the world seem real. Without this investment, illusions are recognized as meaningless and without effect. Each time we take a disturbance to the Holy Spirit for His loving correction, we withdraw investment in the ego and take another step toward fully experiencing God’s peace. This is our practice for today.
