Giving Meaning to Our Time in the World

You can lose sight of oneness, but can not make sacrifice of its reality. Nor can you lose what you would sacrifice, nor keep the Holy Spirit from His task of showing you that [oneness] has not been lost. Hear, then, the song your brother sings to you, and let the world recede, and take the rest his witness offers on behalf of peace. But judge him not, for you will hear no song of liberation for yourself, nor see what it is given [your brother] to witness to, that you may see [oneness] and rejoice with him. Make not his holiness a sacrifice to your belief in sin. You sacrifice your innocence with his, and die each time you see in him a sin deserving death.

Yet every instant can you be reborn, and given life again. [Your brother’s] holiness gives life to you, who cannot die because his sinlessness is known to God; and can no more be sacrificed by you than can the light in you be blotted out because he sees it not. You who would make a sacrifice of life, and make your eyes and ears bear witness to the death of God and of His holy Son, think not that you have power to make of Them what God willed not They be. In Heaven, God’s Son is not imprisoned in a body, nor is sacrificed in solitude to sin. And as [God’s Son] is in Heaven, so must he be eternally and everywhere. He is the same forever. We see our brother as a body because we believe we are a body. But the body’s eyes cannot see Reality. We need to give our attention to seeing with Christ’s vision, which is not of the body. Christ’s vision shows us our unity with the Christ in every brother. It shows us the Reality of Love’s oneness, which joins us with every brother and our Creator.

Giving priority to our Inner Vision is what gives meaning to our time in the world. Our Inner Vision will show us that forgiveness is always justified because nothing ever happens to change the one Self we are. It is this intent that will lead us to forgiveness of the world and return to full awareness that we are in Heaven now. It will free us from perceiving we are limited to a body. We are as God created us.

The Practice That Returns Us to Heaven

Today He speaks to you. His Voice awaits your silence, for His Word can not be heard until your mind is quiet for a while, and meaningless desires have been stilled. Await His Word in quiet. There is peace within you to be called upon today, to help make ready your most holy mind to hear the Voice for its Creator speak.

He speaks from nearer than your heart to you. His Voice is closer than your hand. His Love is everything you are and that He is; the same as you, and you the same as He.

It is your [true] voice to which you listen as He speaks to you. It is your word He speaks. It is the Word of freedom and of peace, of unity of will and purpose, with no separation nor division in the single Mind of Father and of Son. In quiet listen to your Self to­day, and let Him tell you God has never left His Son, and you have never left your Self.

Only be quiet. You will need no rule but this, to let your practicing today lift you above the thinking of the world, and free your vision from the body’s eyes. Only be still and listen. You will hear the Word in which the Will of God the Son joins in His Father’s Will, at one with it, with no illusions interposed be­tween the wholly indivisible and true. As every hour passes by today, be still a moment and remind yourself you have a special purpose for this day; in quiet to receive the Word of God. The ego feeds our mind a constant stream of meaningless thoughts to keep us distracted from the quiet Voice for God within. These thoughts are meaningless because they are based on the illusion of separation from the oneness of God’s Love. Separation denies Love’s oneness. God’s Love threatens the ego because, were we to accept His Love as ours, the ego would cease to seem to be.

Going to the quiet place of peace in our mind opens us to receive the Voice for Truth. In quiet, every perceived problem is resolved. In quiet we remember our True Self. We accept Christ’s vision and see the loving reality of every brother. The practice of pausing and quieting our minds leads us Home to Heaven.

The Solution to Every Perceived Problem

The Holy Spirit offers you release from every problem that you think you have. They are the same to Him because each one, regardless of the form it seems to take, is a demand that someone suffer loss and make a sacrifice that you might gain. And when the situation is worked out so no one loses is the problem gone, because it was an error in perception that now has been corrected. One mistake is not more difficult for Him to bring to truth than is another. For there is but one mistake; the whole idea that loss is possible, and could result in gain for anyone. If this were true, then God would be unfair; sin would be possible, attack be justified and vengeance fair.

This one mistake, in any form, has one correction. There is no loss; to think there is, is a mistake. You have no problems, though you think you have.

Every problem is an error. It does injustice to the Son of God, and therefore is not true. The Holy Spirit does not evaluate injustices as great or small, or more or less. They have no properties to Him. They are mistakes from which the Son of God is suffering, but needlessly. And so He takes the thorns and nails away. He does not pause to judge whether the hurt be large or little. He makes but one judgment; that to hurt God’s Son must be unfair and therefore is not so. (A Course in Miracles, T-26.II.2;3:1-3;4:2-9. The ego is the belief in loss because only if someone loses and someone else gains does specialness appear to be real. This could only “occur” if separation were real. This belief is the one error that must be corrected. It is the one correction that releases us from all error.

The way to heal our minds of the belief in separation and loss is give all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit to let Him correct our mistake. We cannot correct our mistaken perceptions without His help while we believe separation and loss are real, which is the cause of the problem. As long as we insist that loss is real, we will not recognize that our problem has been solved. We must be willing to accept that we are wrong about our perception. This opens our mind to receive His correction. The Holy Spirit’s vision shows us that the perceived loss is not true. We remain unchanged as God’s Son in the oneness of His Love.

Finding and Sharing the Peace of God

No one who truly seeks the peace of God can fail to find it. For he merely asks that he deceive himself no longer by denying to himself what is God’s Will. Who can remain unsatisfied who asks for what he has already? Who could be unanswered who requests an answer which is his to give? The peace of God is yours.

No gift of God can be unshared. It is this attribute that sets the gifts of God apart from every dream that ever seemed to take the place of truth.

…you share one Will with all your brothers, whose intent is yours.

It is this one intent we seek today, uniting our desires with the need of every heart, the call of every mind, the hope that lies beyond despair, the love attack would hide, the brotherhood that hate has sought to sever, but which still remains as God created it. With Help like this beside us, can we fail today as we request the peace of God be given us? (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 185, W-pI.185.11;12:4-5;13:5-14:2. Everyone in the world yearns for peace because the world is the ego’s dream of denying God’s peace. Even though we have engaged with the ego belief system, we have not lost the desire to remember our true Self, which lives in the peace of God. This desire calls to us in every moment. It is an intent we share with every brother.

Now we ask the help of our inner Teacher to strengthen our willingness to choose the peace of God as our singular intent. With this intent, we must also want to share the peace of God with every brother. For if God’s peace is not shared, we have lost awareness of His gift, though it still remains ours.

The truth in us is joined with the truth in every brother. As we accept our unity with our brother and see him as the Love he is, our minds are healed. We claim the peace of God we have always had and we extend His peace to experience it as our own.

Living in the World but Not of It

You live by symbols. You have made up names for everything you see. Each one becomes a separate entity, identified by its own name.

By this split you think you are established as a unity which functions with an independent will.

It would indeed be strange if you were asked to go beyond all symbols of the world, forgetting them forever; yet were asked to take a teaching function. You have need to use the symbols of the world a while. But be you not deceived by them as well. They do not stand for anything at all, and in your practicing it is this thought that will release you from them. They become but means by which you can communicate in ways the world can understand, but which you recognize is not the unity where true communication can be found.

Thus what you need are intervals each day in which the learn­ing of the world becomes a transitory phase; a prison house from which you go into the sunlight and forget the darkness. Here you understand the Word, the Name which God has given you; the one Identity which all things share; the one acknowledgment of what is true. And then step back to darkness, not because you think it real, but only to proclaim its unreality in terms which still have meaning in the world that darkness rules. Our only meaningful function in the world is to awaken from the dream of separation. This is a process of shifting from our conviction that the world and all its parts are real. We make them seem real by our belief in them. Yet the Course is teaching us that it is nothing more than a dream with no reality in truth.

It seems like a huge leap to accept the truth that only Love is real; nothing but Love’s oneness exists. But we do not have to make this leap all at once. We make this change of mind by turning our attention from the teachings of the ego to the teaching of the Holy Spirit, the Voice of our true Self in our mind.

The practice of taking time each day to step back from our involvement in the world and rise above of it to the peace of our true Self opens the way for us to receive Holy Spirit’s lessons in truth. His lessons bring us increasing certainty of the oneness of Love and eternal peace that is our Home.

Each time we rise above and have an experience of this peace and oneness, it becomes increasingly real to us. We bring this awareness with us as we return to the world. This greater awareness becomes a healing balm to the fear and guilt in the dream. With this practice, we learn to live in the world but not be of it.

This Is My Holy Instant of Ielease

Father, it is today that I am free, because my will is Yours. I thought to make another will. Yet nothing that I thought apart from You exists. And I am free because I was mistaken, and did not affect my own reality at all by my illusions. Now I give them up, and lay them down before the feet of truth, to be removed forever from my mind. This is my holy instant of release. Father, I know my will is one with Yours.

And so today we find our glad return to Heaven, which we never really left. The Son of God this day lays down his dreams. The Son of God this day comes home again, released from sin and clad in holiness, with his right mind restored to him at last. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 227, W-pII.227. In every moment we have a choice. Are we going to insist that our perceptions are correct — that we live in a world of separate images, independent of our thoughts and capable of conflicting with our wishes and our needs? Or are we going to accept the Will we share with God that sees only the unified innocence of eternal Love as real. The first choice inevitably brings with it guilt, fear and a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability. The second choice brings peace and joy as we accept the gifts God wills us to have and be.

Today we choose to lay down our self-imposed limitations and accept the will we share with God. With this choice we release ourselves from bondage to mistaken beliefs and return to Heaven.

The Antidote to Powerlessness

[Affirm:] I who remain as God created me would loose the world from all I thought it was. For I am real because the world is not, and I would know my own reality.

Then merely rest, alert but with no strain, and let your mind in quietness be changed so that the world is freed, along with you.

You need not realize that healing comes to many brothers far across the world, as well as to the ones you see nearby, as you send out these thoughts to bless the world. But you will sense your own release, although you may not fully understand as yet that you could never be released alone.

“Throughout the day, increase the freedom sent through your ideas to all the world, and say whenever you are tempted to deny the power of your simple change of mind:

I loose the world from all I thought it was, and choose my own [true reality in God] instead. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 132, W-pI.132.15:2-17:2. See also ACIM Lesson 132 Insights.)

The ego wants us to believe that we are powerless against outside forces from a capricious world. Even the ego’s concept of God is that He can take our “life” on a whim. But believing in a lie does not make it true, except in our perception.

We are not powerless because God has shared all His power and strength with us. We reclaim God’s gift by letting go of our belief in the ego’s lies. Because we are united with every brother in the Sonship, we bring healing to the world as we let go of what we have believed about the world.

As we pause in quietness and welcome the Holy Spirit’s Presence in our mind, our misperceptions are healed. We bless the world as we accept God’s Love and strength as ours. We already have the power to heal the world. We simply need to deny the ego’s denial of What we are in truth and choose instead to accept our reality in Love.
