Asking, “What Is This For?”

[God is in everything I see] explains why you can see all purpose in everything. It explains why nothing is separate, by itself or in itself. And it explains why nothing you see [with the body’s eyes] means anything.

Try then, today, to begin to learn how to look on all things with love, appreciation and open-mindedness. You do not see them now. Would you know what is in them? Nothing is as it appears to you. Its holy purpose stands beyond your little range. When vision has shown you the holiness that lights up the world, you will understand [God is in everything I see] perfectly. The Course tells us to ask of everything, “What is this for?” If we believe we know the meaning of what we see with the body’s eyes, we are not willing to ask what it is for. Most of the Course works on bringing us to the willingness to ask this important question.

It brings to light the hidden agenda of the ego thought system that blocks us from the awareness of Love’s presence. It helps us see the price we pay for believing that we have succeeded in separating from Love, our Source. It helps us realize the magnificent gift our Creator has given us and the blessings we will experience when we accept the gift.

For every experience or perception, the practice of asking the Holy Spirit, “What is this for?” opens the door to learning the truth of What we are. In truth, we were created by Love as Love and nothing else. As we open our minds to be taught the difference between the real and the unreal, we learn to see the Love beyond every form. As we see this, our hearts are filled with appreciation, kindness and gentleness. Where once we saw cause for judgment, we now see cause to offer Love. Where once we saw cause for defense, we now see cause for kindness and compassion.

Today we would open our hearts and minds to this by remembering to ask the Holy Spirit of everything, “What is this for?”

Letting Our Grievances Be Replaced By Miracles

I am entitled to miracles because I am under no laws but God’s. His laws release me from all grievances, and replace them with miracles. And I would accept the miracles in place of the grievances, which are but illusions that hide the miracles beyond. Now I would accept only what the laws of God entitle me to have, that I may use it on behalf of the function He has given me.

Behind this is a miracle to which I am entitled.
Let me not hold a grievance against you, [name],
but offer you the miracle that belongs to you instead.
Seen truly, this offers me a miracle.

To hold a grievance, we must believe that something other than our self can harm us or deprive us of something we want. This is a denial of the law of God, which is that Love is One; there is no “other.” So any perceived problem comes from the belief that we are separate and that there is something else other than what we are. This is the core of all grievances. The answer to the grievance is the recognition that we are one in Love. There is nothing else.

Both the thought that we are alone and the thought that we are Love are in our mind. That is why the solution to the problem is already present. We need only turn away from the false belief in being alone and accept the reality of Love as our Identity for all “problems” to be solved.

In practice in the world, we need to bring everything that disturbs our peace to the Holy Spirit in our mind with willingness to accept His vision in place of our perception. His vision will show us the Love that lies beyond the appearance. With His help we will learn that no matter what the circumstance appears to be, we remain Love as Love created us. And we will see that our brothers are joined with us in that one Love. This is how we let our grievances be replaced by miracles.

Remembering “I Am Spirit”

You are the spirit lovingly endowed with all your Father’s Love and peace and joy. You are the spirit which completes Himself, and shares His function as Creator. He is with you always, as you are with Him.

You are the spirit in whose mind abides the miracle in which all time stands still; the miracle in which a minute spent in using these ideas becomes a time that has no limit and that has no end.

Spirit am I, a holy Son of God, free of all limits, safe and
healed and whole, free to forgive, and free to save the world.

Expressed through you, the Holy Spirit will accept this gift that you received of Him, increase its power and give it back to you.

The experience of being a bodily identity in a world of form is severely limiting. As a body, it is impossible to truly join with anything. Yet we were created limitless Spirit by a limitless Source.

While we believe we are a body, the Course is giving us tools to practice loosening our identification with the body. We are not asked to deny the body or lay it down all at once. But we are encouraged to begin identifying with limitless Spirit as our reality.

As we shift in this direction, the body becomes less of our identity and its value shifts to its use as a means of communication. The world where everyone identifies with being a body needs those who recognize and accept that they are Spirit and use the body as a means to communicate the unity and Love that is the one Self we share. This communication happens in many ways. It can be simply a smile to someone we walk by on the street. It can be a word of appreciation to a checkout clerk. It can be bringing comfort to someone who is upset or in pain. It can be a loving thought about one was once seen as an adversary.

As we remember we are Spirit, we are open to inspiration from the Holy Spirit for what would be truly helpful in each moment. Frequently reminding ourselves, “I am Spirit,” holds our minds open to Holy Spirit’s guidance in all our doing. With this dedication we serve as teachers of God.

The Gift of Christ’s Vision

Christ’s vision is a miracle. It comes from far beyond itself, for it reflects eternal love and the rebirth of love which never dies, but has been kept obscure. Christ’s vision pictures Heaven, for it sees a world so like to Heaven that what God created perfect can be mirrored there. The darkened glass the world presents can show but twisted images in broken parts. The real world pictures Heaven’s innocence.

Christ’s vision is the bridge between the worlds. And in its power can you safely trust to carry you from this world into one made holy by forgiveness.

This is the Holy Spirit’s single gift; the treasure house to which you can appeal with perfect certainty for all the things that can contribute to your happiness.

Behold the store of miracles set out for you to give. Are you not worth the gift, when God appointed it be given you? Judge not God’s Son, but follow in the way He has established. Christ has dreamed the dream of a forgiven world. It is His gift, whereby a sweet transition can be made from death to life; from hopelessness to hope. Let us an instant dream with Him. His dream awakens us to truth. His vision gives the means for a return to our unlost and everlasting sanctity in God. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 159. Christ’s vision carries us from seeing a world of separation and guilt to a world made holy through forgiveness. Like forgiveness, Christ’s vision is an illusion, but one that leads to Reality and lets illusion go. While we believe in a world of separation, we need this bridge.

We access Christ’s vision by being willing to bring all our perceptions to the vision of Christ within our minds. This vision sees past illusions and shows us the innocence and Love that is ever present, beyond appearances.

As we offer this vision to our brothers, we teach him of his innocence and love. And as he learns of his innocence and love, the gift is automatically returned to us. We recognize our wholeness as we recognize our brother is one with us. The gift given to our brother is given to ourselves. Today we welcome Christ’s vision that we may learn of our wholeness and our oneness with our brothers.

Letting Our Minds Be Healed

Now in the hands made gentle by His touch, the Holy Spirit lays a picture of a different you. It is a picture of a body still, for what you really are cannot be seen nor pictured. Yet this one has not been used for purpose of attack, and therefore never suffered pain at all. It witnesses to the eternal truth that you cannot be hurt, and points beyond itself to both your innocence and his. Show this unto your brother, who will see that every scar is healed, and every tear is wiped away in laughter and in love. And he will look on his forgiveness there, and with healed eyes will look beyond it to the innocence that he beholds in you. Here is the proof that he has never sinned; that nothing which his madness bid him do was ever done, or ever had effects of any kind. That no reproach he laid upon his heart was ever justified, and no attack can ever touch him with the poisoned and relentless sting of fear.

Attest his innocence and not his guilt. Your healing is his comfort and his health because it proves illusions are not true. It is not will for life but wish for death that is the motivation for this world. Its only purpose is to prove guilt real. No worldly thought or act or feeling has a motivation other than this one. Each time we accept the Holy Spirit’s interpretation of what we perceive, we learn that in truth we have not been harmed and we remain safe in God’s Love. This lesson may manifest in our experience as a judgment let go, guilt released, a recognition that in truth the circumstance that seemed to disturb us had no substance.

As we accept this mind healing, we become less prone to losing our peace. We become happier and more loving. We worry less and notice signs of appreciation and Love all around us. This healing transforms us into a demonstration of healing that teaches our brother that he, too, has within him the kindness and the love, the happiness and peace that he sees in us.

Thus our healing is given to our brothers. More and more we recognize the truth in our brother, which is the One Self we share. As we let our minds be healed, we save the world.

Remembering Our True Self

There is no world because it is a thought apart from God, and made to separate the Father and the Son, and break away a part of God Himself and thus destroy His Wholeness. Can a world which comes from this idea be real? Can it be anywhere? Deny illusions, but accept the truth. Deny you are a shadow briefly laid upon a dying world. Release your mind, and you will look upon a world released.

Today our purpose is to free the world from all the idle thoughts we ever held about it, and about all living things we see upon it. They can not be there. No more can we. For we are in the home our Father set for us, along with them. And we who are as He created us would loose the world this day from every one of our illusions, that we may be free.

You need not realize that healing comes to many brothers far across the world, as well as to the ones you see nearby, as you send out these thoughts to bless the world. But you will sense your own release, although you may not fully understand as yet that you could never be released alone. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 132, W-pI.132.13-14;16. The “idle thoughts” that make the world come from the belief that separation is real. To release the world we need to let go of the belief in separation. This seems like a threatening idea because we have identified with the body, an image of separation. It seems that to let go of belief in separation would mean the end of our existence.

When we are willing to receive Holy Spirit’s vision in place of our image making in the world, we recognize our true Self — Love’s extension. Instead of losing our identity, which we made up, we gain our true Identity. We lose what was never real and gain our true Reality. We remember we remain at Home in God. We remember we are Love and nothing else as God is.

The fear and guilt that comes with identifying with a separate body is replaced by the joy and innocence given us in our creation. The payoff for letting go of belief in separation is the gift of Heaven. It is surely worth giving up nothing to know that we have everything.

Let Love Heal All False Perceptions

Why wait for Heaven? Those who seek the light are merely covering their eyes. The light is in them now. Enlightenment is but a recognition, not a change at all. Light is not of the world, yet you who bear the light in you are alien here as well. The light came with you from your native home, and stayed with you because it is your own. It is the only thing you bring with you from Him Who is your Source. It shines in you because it lights your home, and leads you back to where it came from and you are at home.

The peace of God is shining in you now, and from your heart extends around the world. It pauses to caress each living thing, and leaves a blessing with it that remains forever and forever. What it gives must be eternal. It removes all thoughts of the ephemeral and valueless. It brings renewal to all tired hearts, and lights all vision as it passes by. All of its gifts are given everyone, and everyone unites in giving thanks to you who give, and you who have received. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 188, W-pI.188.1,3. We rest in God today… We follow in the way of peace… In peace we see past images of separation and become aware of Love’s Oneness… We let God’s Love fill our minds and hearts with happiness and peace…

In this state of mind we become aware of how to be truly helpful in each now present moment… We see that our real purpose is to accept God’s Love and extend it to the world… We see the difference between the real and the unreal… and let Love heal all false perceptions… We give thanks that only Love is real…
