Letting Holy Spirit Transform Our Relationships

God established His relationship with you to make you happy, and nothing you do that does not share His purpose can be real. The purpose God ascribed to anything is its only function. Because of His reason for creating His relationship with you, the function of relationships became forever “to make happy.” And nothing else. To fulfill this function you relate to your creations as God to His. For nothing God created is apart from happiness, and nothing God created but would extend happiness as its Creator did. Whatever does not fulfill this function cannot be real.

In this world it is impossible to create. Yet it is possible to make happy. I have said repeatedly that the Holy Spirit would not deprive you of your special relationships, but would transform them. And all that is meant by that is that He will restore to [your relationships] the function given them by God. …Every special relationship you have made is a substitute for God’s Will, and glorifies [your will] instead of His because of the illusion that they are different.”

“Every special relationship you have made has, as its fundamental purpose, the aim of occupying your mind so completely that you will not hear the call of truth. (A Course in Miracles, T-17.IV.1;2:1-4,7;3:3. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

When we believe in the ego thought system of separation, we are choosing to believe that our will is different from God’s Will. This belief makes separation seem real. The ego’s purpose for special relationships is to reinforce the seeming reality of separation. The ego’s special relationships always have an element of conflict (separation). These relationships seem to offer us something we like but always at the expense of sacrificing other things we value. Sacrifice is another key belief the ego uses to reinforce separation and justify fear, anger and guilt.

Ego-based special relationships can be transformed into holy relationships if we accept the Holy Spirit’s purpose instead of our own. The Holy Spirit’s purpose is the same as God’s purpose — to make us eternally happy.

Happiness is an aspect of God’s Love. The Holy Spirit’s purpose for our relationships, then, is to extend Love. This is Holy Spirit’s call to us in every moment. We need to set aside the ego’s purpose by choosing to accept the Holy Spirit’s purpose for all our relationships. He will teach us true forgiveness, which removes barriers to Love, so we freely extend Love without the ego’s attempts to limit it.

Today we offer our relationships to the Holy Spirit with willingness to exchange the ego’s purpose for His purpose of extending Love and nothing else.

Bringing Light to the World

To the ego, today’s idea [I am the light of the world] is the epitome of self-glorification. But the ego does not understand humility, mistaking it for self-debasement. Humility consists of accepting your role in salvation and in taking no other. It is not humility to insist you cannot be the light of the world if that is the function God assigned to you. It is only arrogance that would assert this function cannot be for you, and arrogance is always of the ego.

True humility requires that you accept today’s idea because it is God’s Voice which tells you it is true. This is a beginning step in accepting your real function on earth. It is a giant stride toward taking your rightful place in salvation. It is a positive assertion of your right to be saved, and an acknowledgment of the power that is given you to save others.

I am the light of the world. That is my only function. That is why I am here. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 61, W-pI.61.2-3;5:3-5. See also ACIM Lesson 61 Insights.)

The Course equates the ego with darkness because it is the denial of God’s Light. Because our true Self remains united with God, our Creator, God’s Light is ours. It is our Self, our true Identity, that is the Light of the world.

Being Love, our Self sees beyond the images of the world to the Light of Love in everyone and everything. We let go of believing the ego is our identity by letting go of the dark ego thought system. Each time we bring our judgments to the Holy Spirit and accept His loving correction, we bring Light to the world. We let more of the Light we are shine through. The ego’s dark thoughts are forgiven and dispelled. The practice of letting go of the dark thoughts of separation and accepting the Light of Love we are is our only function.

Changing Perception from Fear to Love

You are entitled to miracles because of what you are. You will receive miracles because of what God is. And you will offer miracles because you are one with God. Again, how simple is salvation! It is merely a statement of your true Identity. It is this that we will celebrate today.

Your claim to miracles does not lie in your illusions about yourself. It does not depend on any magical powers you have ascribed to yourself, nor on any of the rituals you have devised. It is inherent in the truth of what you are. It is implicit in what God your Father is. It was ensured in your creation, and guaranteed by the laws of God.

Today we will claim the miracles which are your right, since they belong to you. You have been promised full release from the world you made. You have been assured that the Kingdom of God is within you, and can never be lost. We ask no more than what belongs to us in truth. Today, however, we will also make sure that we will not content ourselves with less. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 77, W-pI.77.1-3. See also ACIM Lesson 77 Insights.)

Miracles can be called extensions of Love. The Love that created us as extensions of Itself continues to extend Love eternally. We are entitled Love because that is Love’s Will. When we let go of our ego perceptions of separation, we open our minds to accept the Love that has always been present. Nothing has really changed. We have merely let go of the perception that hid the Presence of Love from our awareness.

Being the denial of Love, the ego insists that we are unworthy of Love. The practice of reminding ourselves that we are entitled to miracles is the antidote that neutralizes the ego belief in unworthiness. It clears the way to accepting Love’s extension and we naturally join with Its extension. Our perception shifts to seeing the Love and innocence that is everywhere, because only Love is real. Our perception has changed from fear to Love.

Choosing the World We Really Want

Beyond this world there is a world I want. …Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace. Think you this world can offer that to you?

Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time?

Now is the last step certain; now you stand an instant’s space away from timelessness. Here can you but look forward, never back to see again the world you do not want. Here is the world that comes to take its place, as you unbind your mind from little things the world sets forth to keep you prisoner. Value them not, and they will disappear. Esteem them, and they will seem real to you. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 129, W-pI.129.1:3-4;3:1-2;5. See also ACIM Lesson 129 Insights.)

Imagine what it would be like to dwell in a place where we know we are loved eternally, we are perfectly safe because loss does not exist, there is no fear because harm is impossible and we are perfectly happy all the time. In fact, this describes the Home our Father created for us. In Reality we are already there.

But while we value anything we see here in the world of bodies and images of form, our true dwelling place is invisible to us. It is hidden by a world that is “unstable, cruel, unconcerned with us, quick to avenge and pitiless with hate.” Today we remind ourselves:

Beyond this world there is a world I want.
I choose to see that world instead of this,
for here is nothing that I really want.
(7:3-4)

We are choosing to accept the Home our Father created for us. It is the only Home we really want because it is the Home of our true Self. We are valuing the reality of Love in place of the ego’s empty substitutes.

Forgiveness Is the Pathway Home

Have you not wondered what the world is really like; how it would look through happy eyes? The world you see is but a judgment on yourself. It is not there at all. Yet judgment lays a sentence on it, justifies it and makes it real. Such is the world you see; a judgment on yourself, and made by you. This sickly picture of yourself is carefully preserved by the ego, whose image it is and which it loves, and placed outside you in the world. And to this world must you adjust as long as you believe this picture is outside, and has you at its mercy. This world is merciless, and were it outside you, you should indeed be fearful. Yet it was you who made it merciless, and now if mercilessness seems to look back at you, it can be corrected.

Who in a holy relationship can long remain unholy? The world the holy see is one with them, just as the world the ego looks upon is like itself. The world the holy see is beautiful because they see their innocence in it.

Such is my will for you and your brother, and for each of you for one another and for himself. Here there is only holiness and joining without limit. For what is Heaven but union, direct and perfect, and without the veil of fear upon it? Here are we one, looking with perfect gentleness upon each other and on ourselves. Here all thoughts of any separation between us become impossible. You who were a prisoner in separation are now made free in Paradise. And here would I unite with you, my friend, my brother and my Self.

The innocent see safety, and the pure in heart see God within His Son, and look unto the Son to lead them to the Father. (A Course in Miracles, T-20.III.5:-6:3;10;11:3. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Happy eyes are forgiving eyes. It is judgment that makes us fearful, angry and unhappy. Unhappiness is a sign that we are not accepting God’s Will for us, which is perfect happiness. It means that we are believing in a false image of ourselves as separate from Love’s holiness (oneness).

To forgive is to let go of belief in a false image. A false image has no power to affect reality. Belief only seems to draw a veil across the truth of What we are — God’s holy Son. When belief is let go, the veil disappears, revealing our innocence and showing us a beautiful world of kindness, free of fear and united in Love. We see our brother as our one Self at home in Paradise. Forgiveness is the pathway Home.

The Savior’s Vision

To everyone has God entrusted all, because a partial savior would be one who is but partly saved. The holy ones whom God has given you to save are but everyone you meet or look upon, not knowing who they are; all those you saw an instant and forgot, and those you knew a long while since, and those you will yet meet; the unremembered and the not yet born. For God has given you His Son to save from every concept that he ever held.

Yet while you wish to stay in hell [separate from Love’s oneness], how could you be the savior of the Son of God? How would you know his holiness while you see him apart from yours? For holiness is seen through holy eyes that look upon the innocence within, and thus expect to see it everywhere. And so they call it forth in everyone they look upon, that he may be what they expect of him. This is the savior’s vision; that he see his innocence in all he looks upon, and see his own salvation everywhere. He holds no concept of himself between his calm and open eyes and what he sees. He brings the light to what he looks upon, that he may see it as it really is. (A Course in Miracles, T-31.VII.10:4-11:7. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

To be savior to the world, we must first save ourselves. We save ourselves by letting go of (forgiving) the image of ourselves as a separate identity. As long as we hold a wish to have a separate, special identity different from all ‘others,’ we keep ourselves in hell. The illusion of harm and justification for guilt can only appear real to a separate image of our self. Innocence is universal in the oneness of Love.

Letting go of judgment, forgiving all appearances of harm, clears the way for Christ’s vision in our holy mind. When every thought of separation is released, we have accepted our holiness in place of the wish for specialness. Now we see the face of Christ in everyone for we have seen Christ within. We release the false image of our self by bringing all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit to receive His perception in their place. His vision shows us face of Christ in every circumstance. This is how we learn to forgive and be savior to the world.

The Key to Release from Fear

Redemption has been given you to give your brother, and thus receive it. Whom you forgive is free, and what you give you share. Forgive the sins your brother thinks he has committed, and all the guilt you think you see in him.

Give faith to your brother, for faith and hope and mercy are yours to give. Into the hands that give, the gift is given. Look on your brother, and see in him the gift of God you would receive.

Together we will disappear into the Presence beyond the veil, not to be lost but found; not to be seen but known. And knowing, nothing in the plan God has established for salvation will be left undone. This is the journey’s purpose, without which is the journey meaningless. Here is the peace of God, given to you eternally by Him. Here is the rest and quiet that you seek, the reason for the journey from its beginning. Heaven is the gift you owe your brother, the debt of gratitude you offer to the Son of God in thanks for what he is, and what his Father created him to be. (A Course in Miracles, T-19.IV.D.15:8-10;17:1-3;19. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

We give faith to our brother by seeing him as the Christ, the one Self we share as God’s one Son. As we look on our brother as Christ, he reflects the Christ back to us. He becomes the mirror that shows us the truth of What we are.

When we judge our brother as an ego and see him as guilty, he becomes a mirror showing us the ego we think we are. The ego always sees its guilt reflected in the world it perceives. The Christ in us always sees its innocence reflected everywhere.

Judgment denies innocence. That is why forgiving our brothers wholly, without exception, is the only meaningful purpose for our journey in the world. It is the key to release from fear. Forgiveness clears the way for acceptance of the Love that is our brother and ourself, united as the Son of God.
