The Choice for Happiness and Peace

Everyone here has entered darkness, yet no one has entered it alone. Nor need he stay more than an instant. For he has come with Heaven’s Help within him, ready to lead him out of darkness into light at any time. The time he chooses can be any time, for help is there, awaiting but his choice. And when he chooses to avail himself of [this help that] is given him, then will he see each situation that he thought before was means to justify his anger turned to an event which justifies his love. He will hear plainly that the calls to war he heard before are really calls to peace. He will perceive that where he gave attack is but another altar where he can, with equal ease and far more happiness, bestow forgiveness. And he will reinterpret all temptation as just another chance to bring him joy.

How can a misperception be a sin? Let all your brother’s errors be to you nothing except a chance for you to see the workings of the Helper given you to see the world He made instead of yours. What, then, is justified? What do you want? For these two questions are the same. And when you see them as the same, your choice is made. For it is seeing them as one that brings release from the belief there are two ways to see. This world has much to offer to your peace, and many chances to extend your own forgiveness. Such its purpose is, to those who want to see peace and forgiveness descend on them, and offer them the light.

The Maker of the world of gentleness has perfect power to offset the world of violence and hate that seems to stand between you and His gentleness. [The world of violence and hate] is not there in His forgiving eyes. And therefore it need not be there in yours. (A Course in Miracles, T-25.III.6:1-8:3. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

It is comforting to know that no matter how fearful, upsetting or depressing the world appears to be, we have help in our minds ready to guide us past it to the peace and joy God wills for us. But we must choose to accept the Help that is given us. As long as we believe we are a separate identity, housed in a body that can harm or be harmed, the world will continue to be an unhappy and fearful place.

But this belief can be changed if we are willing to accept the Holy Spirit’s help. We can choose to be happy. We can choose peace. We can choose to accept Love and extend Love instead of choosing the darkness of the ego thought system of lovelessness, guilt and fear. Every moment is an opportunity to accept the Holy Spirit’s vision which turns every perception in the world into an opportunity to forgive. We bring healing to the world by making this choice.

Accepting Our Oneness in Love

We have a mission here. We did not come to reinforce the madness that we once believed in. Let us not forget the goal that we accepted. It is more than just our happiness alone we came to gain. What we accept as what we are proclaims what everyone must be, along with us. Fail not your brothers, or you fail yourself. Look lovingly on them, that they may know that they are part of you, and you of them.

This does Atonement teach, and demonstrates the Oneness of God’s Son is unassailed by his belief he knows not what he is. Today accept Atonement, not to change reality, but merely to accept the truth about yourself, and go your way rejoicing in the endless Love of God.

We start with this review of what our mission is:

I will accept Atonement for myself,
For I remain as God created me.

We have not lost the knowledge that God gave to us when He created us like Him. We can remember it for everyone, for in creation are all minds as one. And in our memory is the recall how dear our brothers are to us in truth, how much a part of us is every mind, how faithful they have really been to us, and how our Father’s Love contains them all. One of the Workbook lessons has us repeat frequently, “God is but Love and therefore so am I.” The Course also tells us that Love is one and only Love is real. Since God’s Son is only Love, we are united in Love as God’s one Son.

What is one cannot be divided and be Itself. To accept Atonement for ourselves is to accept our oneness with the Love of God. This acceptance is complete when we see every brother included in this oneness. We rest in perfect peace, for there is no conflict in the oneness of Love. We are of one Mind, united with the Mind of God.

As we accept this, we accept Atonement for all. This acceptance is the end of the ego belief in separation. Let us remind ourselves today as we think of any brother that we are one as God created us.

The Escape from Loneliness

Whenever you are angry, you can be sure that you have formed a special relationship which the ego has “blessed,” for anger is its blessing. Anger takes many forms, but it cannot long deceive those who will learn that love brings no guilt at all, and what brings guilt cannot be love and must be anger. All anger is nothing more than an attempt to make someone feel guilty, and this attempt is the only basis the ego accepts for special relationships. Guilt is the only need the ego has, and as long as you identify with it, guilt will remain attractive to you. Yet remember this; to be with a body is not communication. And if you think it is, you will feel guilty about communication and will be afraid to hear the Holy Spirit, recognizing in His Voice your own need to communicate.

In the holy instant guilt holds no attraction, since communication has been restored. And guilt, whose only purpose is to disrupt communication, has no function here [in the holy instant]. Here there is no concealment, and no private thoughts. The willingness to communicate attracts communication to it, and overcomes loneliness completely. There is complete forgiveness here, for there is no desire to exclude anyone from your completion, in sudden recognition of the value of his part in [your completion]. True communication occurs only in the mind. It is joining in the one thought of God — Love. Because Love is one, joining in the thought of Love is uniting in the Mind of God.

The body is a fence the ego has constructed to attempt to separate part of the mind from its unity with God. Separation makes communication impossible. The belief in being separate carries with it an intense sense of loneliness. The ego’s answer for this loneliness is to seek relationships with other bodies. Such relationships do not resolve the loneliness.

It is only through realizing that we are Mind, not limited by the body, that we can have the experience of our completion and wholeness in the Love of God. When we experience that we are whole, loneliness is impossible. As we are willing to accept the Holy Spirit’s help to find our wholeness, we open to the holy instant in which we experience the unity of our Mind with the loving Mind of God. Loneliness is impossible when we know we are complete.

Whenever we are bothered by what another body appears to do or say, we are identifying ourselves as a body. The lesson the Holy Spirit would have us learn is that no one is a body. He would teach us to overlook the body and all its seeming behavior to see the radiant Son of God in everyone, including ourselves.

Today we practice bringing every thought or perception that disturbs our peace to the Holy Spirit. He will teach us to see that the cause for the disturbance is a mistaken belief that the body and separation are real. This practice will heal the loneliness, the guilt and the fear we experience. It will awaken us to the Self that is one with our Creator.

The Key to Freedom and Inner Peace

Healing, forgiveness, and the glad exchange of all the world of sorrow for a world where sadness cannot enter, are the means by which the Holy Spirit urges you to follow Him. His gentle lessons teach how easily salvation can be yours; how little practice you need undertake to let His laws replace the ones you made to hold yourself a prisoner to death. His life becomes your own, as you extend the little help He asks in freeing you from everything that ever caused you pain.

And as you let yourself be healed, you see all those around you, or who cross your mind, or whom you touch or those who seem to have no contact with you, healed along with you. Perhaps you will not recognize them all, nor realize how great your offering to all the world, when you let healing come to you. But you are never healed alone. And legions upon legions will receive the gift that you receive when you are healed.

Those who are healed become the instruments of healing. Nor does time elapse between the instant they are healed, and all the grace of healing it is given them to give. What is opposed to God does not exist, and who accepts it not within his mind becomes a haven where the weary can remain to rest. For here is truth bestowed, and here are all illusions brought to truth.

Let healing be through you this very day. And as you rest in quiet, be prepared to give as you receive, to hold but what you give, and to receive the Word of God to take the place of all the foolish thoughts that ever were imagined. The body is a construct, an image made by the mind that believes it is separate from the oneness of God’s Love. In truth it is impossible to be separate from Love. But it is possible to believe in being separate. The effect of this belief is a deep sense of loss and a desire to find the Love that seems to have been lost. This sense of loss is experienced in the dream of lovelessness as pain, guilt, fear, vulnerability and loss. But this is only an effect of a belief in a false idea that could never be true.

Beliefs change and this changeability is the opening through which we can be released from the limitations of the dream of separation. The Holy Spirit is in our minds to help us change this imprisoning belief. The key to open the prison door cannot be found within the prison. But the Holy Spirit has the key. We only need to be willing to accept it.

This means we only need to be willing to bring all our perceptions to Him for correction. He will teach us what is true and what is false. Each time we accept His lessons we open the door to freedom and peace a little more. When we become willing to not accept any perception based on belief in separation, we are free. We remember the Love that we thought we had lost is what we are and have always been. Today we practice letting the Holy Spirit correct all errors in our minds.

Bringing Healing to God’s Son

Before your brother’s holiness the world is still, and peace descends on it in gentleness and blessing so complete that not one trace of conflict still remains to haunt you in the darkness of the night. He is your savior from the dreams of fear. He is the healing of your sense of sacrifice and fear that what you have will scatter with the wind and turn to dust. In him is your assurance God is here, and with you now. While he is what he is, you can be sure that God is knowable and will be known to you. For He could never leave His Own creation. And the sign that this is so lies in your brother, offered you that all your doubts about yourself may disappear before his holiness. See in him God’s creation. For in him his Father waits for your acknowledgment that He created you as part of Him.

Forget not that the healing of God’s Son is all the world is for. That is the only purpose the Holy Spirit sees in it, and thus the only one it has. Until you see the healing of the Son as all you wish to be accomplished by the world, by time and all appearances, you will not know the Father nor yourself. For you will use the world for what is not its purpose, and will not escape its laws of violence and death. Yet it is given you to be beyond its laws in all respects, in every way and every circumstance, in all temptation to perceive what is not there, and all belief God’s Son can suffer pain because he sees himself as he is not. God’s Son needs healing because His Son perceives himself broken into billions of pieces in separate bodies. This is the ego’s dream of separation. The body’s eyes were made to see images of separation and cannot recognize the holiness of God’s Son.

To do our part in the salvation of God’s Son, we must choose the vision of the Holy Spirit in our minds. His sole purpose for the world is to bring God’s Son back to the awareness that he remains at one with his Creator and every brother. This is the Holy Spirit’s healing vision. To do our part we need to bring all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit for His purification. He will help us overlook bodies and all they seem to do. He reminds us that our brothers are not bodies, but remain Love as God created them.

It is impossible to believe bodies are sinless. That is why the Holy Spirit teaches us that our brother is not a body. As we accept His vision, bodies diminish in their seeming importance and the magnificent Light of Love that is the truth in every brother captures our attention. This is how we join with the Holy Spirit to bring healing to God’s Son.

Releasing Ourselves from Guilt

In stillness we will hear God’s Voice today without intrusion of our petty thoughts, without our personal desires, and without all judgment of His holy Word. We will not judge ourselves today, for what we are can not be judged. We stand apart from all the judgments which the world has laid upon the Son of God. It knows him not. Today we will not listen to the world, but wait in silence for the Word of God.

Today He speaks to you. His Voice awaits your silence, for His Word can not be heard until your mind is quiet for a while, and meaningless desires have been stilled. Await His Word in quiet. There is peace within you to be called upon today, to help make ready your most holy mind to hear the Voice for its Creator speak. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 125, W-pI.125.3;6. Most of us have so much chatter going on in our minds that the idea of quieting our minds seems to be a daunting task. Yet we are told that there is a place of quiet in our minds that we can call upon for help. It is in us now, but we must be willing to accept the help. We need to make quieting our mind, at least for some time every day, our highest priority. The ego offers all kinds of excuses to convince us that we can’t take the time; there are too many things to do. But this is just the ego’s defense against our recognition of the quiet peace of our true Self.

Today our top priority is to accept the peace in our minds. We want to hear our true Self assure us that we are safe in Love. We want to remember that we share the holiness of God with all our brothers. We want to see the Christ, the true Self, in every brother. We want to bring release from guilt to all the world, for we want to remember our Self. In quiet we will receive God’s assurance that we are His Son and we remain united with Him in Love.

The Path of Return to Heaven

How can you tell when you are seeing wrong, or someone else is failing to perceive the lesson he should learn? Does pain [of any kind] seem real in the perception? If it does, be sure the lesson is not learned. And there remains an unforgiveness hiding in the mind that sees the pain through eyes the mind directs.

God would not have you suffer thus. He would help you forgive yourself.”

“This is the lesson God would have you learn: There is a way to look on everything that lets it be to you another step to Him, and to salvation of the world. To all that speaks of terror, answer thus:

I will forgive, and this will disappear.

To every apprehension, every care and every form of suffering, repeat these selfsame words. And then you hold the key that opens Heaven’s gate, and brings the Love of God the Father down to earth at last, to raise it up to Heaven. The daily practice of letting the Holy Spirit help us forgive every perception is the path of return to Heaven. We need do no more than this. When we have reached the point of holding nothing back from Holy Spirit’s loving correction, we stand before the open gates of Heaven. Here God’s Love welcomes us and we remember that we are His one Son, conceived in Love and forever remaining Love.

We dedicate today to accept the Help given us to free ourselves from the mistaken belief that we could be separate from God’s Love.
