Learning Holy Spirit’s Lessons in Love

Only appreciation is an appropriate response to your brother. Gratitude is due him for both his loving thoughts and his appeals for help, for both are capable of bringing love into your awareness if you perceive them truly. And all your sense of strain comes from your attempts not to do just this. How simple, then, is God’s plan for salvation. There is but one response to reality, for reality evokes no conflict at all. There is but one Teacher of reality, Who understands what it is. He does not change His Mind about reality because reality does not change. Although your interpretations of reality are meaningless in your divided state, His remain consistently true. He gives them to you because they are for you. Do not attempt to “help” a brother in your way, for you cannot help yourself. But hear his call for the Help of God, and you will recognize your own need for the Father. While we identify with the ego thought system, our interpretations of reality will always be mistaken. The ego is the denial of reality, the denial of Love. The ego sees lovelessness everywhere and builds defenses against attacks of lovelessness.

The ego sees appearances of lovelessness as justification for defense and attack. The Holy Spirit sees appearances of lovelessness as calls for Love. A loveless perception could only come from a mistaken belief that there could be lack of Love. The Holy Spirit would correct the mistaken belief by responding with Love.

When we react with defensiveness, we do so because we believe we lack Love. The Holy Spirit would offer His gentle correction by offering us Love in answer to our call. As we let our minds be healed, we bring healing to the world. The Holy Spirit is always with us, ready to help us respond with Love in every situation. This is how we learn that we are Love, along with all our brothers.

We Cannot Be Alone

We walk to God. Pause and reflect on this. Could any way be holier, or more deserving of your effort, of your love and of your full intent? What way could give you more than everything, or offer less and still content the holy Son of God? We walk to God. The truth that walks before us now is one with Him, and leads us to where He has always been. What way but this could be a path that you would choose instead?

Your feet are safely set upon the road that leads the world to God. Look not to ways that seem to lead you elsewhere. Dreams are not a worthy guide for you who are God’s Son. Forget not He has placed His Hand in yours, and given you your brothers in His trust that you are worthy of His trust in you. He cannot be deceived. His trust has made your pathway certain and your goal secure. You will not fail your brothers nor your Self.

And now He asks but that you think of Him a while each day, that He may speak to you and tell you of His Love, reminding you how great His trust; how limitless His Love. In your Name and His Own, which are the same, we practice gladly with this thought today:

I will step back and let Him lead the way,

God’s Love is always with us, eternally and without limit. It needs only our acknowledgement, our willingness to accept His gift. We cannot be alone. His strength is ours and we would claim it now.

Each day we need to take time to step back from the busyness of the world. In this pause we open our minds to be reminded of the Love that is already ours. In quietness we welcome God’s peace. We let Him lead the way that leads us to the full remembrance of our Home in the eternal presence of Love.

With this as our foundation, we go forth into each day carrying the message that we are all united in Love. As we accept this as our reality, our brothers join with us on the path of return to Love.

Welcoming the Thoughts We Share with God.

Although you are one Self, you experience yourself as two; as both good and evil, loving and hating, mind and body.

Spirit makes use of mind as means to find its Self expression. And the mind which serves the spirit is at peace and filled with joy. [Mind’s] power comes from spirit, and it is fulfilling happily its function here. Yet mind can also see itself divorced from spirit, and perceive itself within a body it confuses with itself. Without its function then it has no peace, and happiness is alien to its thoughts.

Wait patiently, and let Him speak to you about your Self, and what your mind can do, restored to [your Self] and free to serve Its Will.

If you succeed, the thoughts that come to you will tell you you are saved, and that your mind has found the function that it sought to lose. Your Self will welcome [your mind] and give it peace. Restored in strength, [your mind] will again flow out from spirit to the spirit in all things created by the Spirit as Itself. Your mind will bless all things. In truth we are Spirit. Spirit is one, eternal and formless. Spirit has no limit and is united with the Source of all strength. It opposes nothing, for there is nothing outside of Spirit. Spirit is at peace because there is nothing real that conflicts with it. Spirit is joyful, for Its only function is to extend Love.

If it seems that we are alone, weak and subject to outside forces, it is only because we have mistakenly identified with a false image of what we are. The body is not our identity. We are not lost in a dream world of conflict, uncertainty, fear and guilt. But we will experience that we are in the world when we believe we are a body, a separate identity. It is this mistaken belief that must be healed. As we let our minds return in peace to our one Self, we are healed. We will welcome the thoughts we share with God, the Thoughts of our one Self. This is our release and our freedom.

Today we would welcome the Thoughts we share with God.

How to Awaken to Love

I said before that the Holy Spirit is the Answer. …When the ego tempts you to sickness do not ask the Holy Spirit to heal the body, for this would merely be to accept the ego’s belief that the body is the proper aim of healing. Ask, rather, that the Holy Spirit teach you the right perception of the body, for perception alone can be distorted. Only perception can be sick, because only perception can be wrong.

Wrong perception is the wish that things be as they are not.

All forms of sickness, even unto death, are physical expressions of the fear of awakening.

The decision to wake is the reflection of the will to love, since all healing involves replacing fear with love. (A Course in Miracles, T-8.IX.1:1,5-7;2:1;3:2;5:2. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

It’s helpful to learn that lack of peace or sickness of any kind is an expression of fear of awakening. It comes from wrong perception, which is “the wish to be as we are not.” We were created by Love as Love. Love and fear cannot coexist. The presence of fear demonstrates that we are denying the Love we are. This causes wrong perception, which needs to be corrected. The way out of fear is to ask the Holy Spirit for correction of our perception and to accept the correction. This is what forgiveness means.

We must ask the Holy Spirit for correction because the ego is incapable of true perception. The Holy Spirit will always guide us back to alignment with His perception. He will always return us to Love, our only Reality. Today we practice opening our minds to Holy Spirit’s right perception.

Rise Above to See the Love

Today we offer thanks that Christ has come to search the world for what belongs to Him. His vision sees no strangers, but beholds His Own and joyously unites with them. They see Him as a stranger, for they do not recognize themselves. Yet as they give Him welcome, they remember. And He leads them gently home again, where they belong.

Not one does Christ forget. Not one He fails to give you to remember, that your home may be complete and perfect as it was established. He has not forgotten you. But you will not remember Him until you look on all as He does. Who denies his brother is denying Him, and thus refusing to accept the gift of sight by which his Self is clearly recognized, his home remembered and salvation come. Christ sees everyone as His brother, at one with Him. This is another way of saying Love sees only Love. Our one Self sees only the one Self we share with all. Our true function is to share this vision. But we cannot see this unity if we see anyone as different from us. That is why we must forgive.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, forgiveness sees past the appearance of differences to the one Self we all share. With each perception of differences, our only function is to practice reminding ourselves that we desire to see past the appearance to the Love that is true. Today we would rise above to see the Love that is our Self. That is our function.

Bringing Love to the World

My thoughts are images that I have made. Whatever I see reflects my thoughts. It is my thoughts that tell me where I am and what I am. The fact that I see a world in which there is suffering and loss and death shows me that I am seeing only the representation of my insane thoughts, and am not allowing my real thoughts to cast their beneficent light on what I see. Yet God’s way is sure. The images I have made cannot prevail against Him because it is not my will that they do so. My will is His, and I will place no other gods before Him. When we look at a house, a passing car or someone walking on the street, it doesn’t seem that these are images we have made. But the Course is teaching us that these are representations of the ego thought system. When we believe separation is real, we join the ego thought system. The part of our mind that holds this belief sees the images representing this belief. All the forms of the world are made by the ego thought system to convince us that separation is real.

Belief does not make reality, but it can make illusions seem real. The Course is teaching us to recognize that everything we see in the world is not real. It is the core message we need to accept if we would free ourselves from fear and guilt.

Guilt is always associated with what a body does. As long as we believe that the body is our identity, we will walk in fear and guilt. Yet we are identifying with an illusion and believing it is true is insanity.

As we are willing to let the Holy Spirit show us the truth beyond the images of insanity, we will learn that our true will is God’s Will. Since God’s Will is to be and extend only Love, our will is to be Love. As we accept What we are, we will overlook the insanity and bring Love to the world. That is our only function.

Making Way for Happiness

I will accept my part in God’s plan for salvation. We side with truth and let illusions go. We will not vacillate between the two, but take a firm position with the One. We dedicate ourselves to truth today, and to salvation as God planned it be.

We have a mighty purpose to fulfill, and have been given everything we need with which to reach the goal. Not one mistake stands in our way. For we have been absolved from errors. All our sins are washed away by realizing they were but mistakes.

[The guiltless] rest in quiet certainty that they will do what it is given them to do. They do not doubt their own ability because they know their function will be filled completely in the perfect time and place. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 98, W-pI.98.1:3-5;2:3-6;3:3-4. Accepting God’s plan for salvation is the key to happiness because His Will for us is perfect happiness. Our dedication to accepting God’s plan sets us on the path to joy beyond description in this world.

God’s plan is very simple: Stop investing our belief in illusions of separation and we will know perfect happiness. We will know that our real will has always been God’s Will. We have help to let go of our mistaken beliefs. We need only be willing to offer our beliefs to our inner Teacher with willingness to learn a better way.

This only seems difficult to do because we believe we will lose what we value if we accept our inner Teacher’s lessons. Yet our Teacher’s lessons are gentle and kind. He does not take what we are unwilling to give. But He will lovingly show us that what we thought was so precious really has no value. When we accept that it is nothing we freely lay it down, making way for our Teacher’s gifts of Love and joy.
