The Foundation of Forgiveness

Love makes no comparisons. And gratitude can only be sincere if it be joined to love. We offer thanks to God our Father that in us all things will find their freedom.

Walk, then, in gratitude the way of love. …When your forgiveness is complete you will have total gratitude, for you will see that everything has earned the right to love by being loving, even as your Self.

Gratitude goes hand in hand with love, and where one is the other must be found. For gratitude is but an aspect of the Love which is the Source of all creation. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 195, W-pI.195.4:2-4;8:1,6;10:2-3. See also ACIM Lesson 195 Insights.)

Only Love is real. Thus everything that is real is loving. If we perceive anything that is not loving, we are perceiving the unreal, which does not exist in truth. This is the foundation for all forgiveness.

We have taught ourselves to believe that illusions are real. To forgive, we need to learn to recognize illusions as unreal and therefore nonexistent. The Holy Spirit is in our mind as our Teacher to learn His lessons. His teaching corrects our misperceptions.

When we accept the lesson that what we thought was real and called for defense is not real, the perceived disturbance disappears. What we recognize as unreal is automatically dismissed. We forgive because we realize nothing really happened. It was only a dream. We let go of a barrier to Love and Love flows in to take its place, bringing gratitude with it. Each time we learn this important correction of our perception, we take a step closer to wholly accepting that only Love is real.
