Willingness to See We Are One with Our Brother in Love

No one can look upon the fear of God unterrified, unless he has accepted the Atonement and learned illusions are not real.

To look upon the fear of God does need some preparation. Only the sane can look on stark insanity and raving madness with pity and compassion, but not with fear. For only if they share in [madness] does it seem fearful, and you do share in it until you look upon your brother with perfect faith and love and tenderness. Before complete forgiveness you still stand unforgiving. You are afraid of God because you fear your brother. Those you do not forgive you fear. And no one reaches love with fear beside him. (A Course in Miracles, T-19.IV.i.9:1;11:1-7)

The illusion of separation is the effect of rejecting our oneness in God’s Love. The desire for specialness is the rejection of oneness. This desire produces the illusion that we are separate and alone. Within this delusion, we think we are unique individuals with private thoughts we do not share. As long as we identify with this false image of ourselves, we will fear the oneness of Love, because it would mean the end of the false identity we have claimed as our own. Yet the only way out of fear is to let go of this false identity and claim our real Identity as Love in the one Mind of Love.

Within the framework of the illusion of separation, we cannot find our way back to Love’s oneness. We need our true Self, our inner Teacher, to lead us out. Our inner Teacher leads us out through forgiving, or letting go of, the dream of separation. Our brother becomes our savior as we are willing to let the veil be lifted to see the innocent face of Christ in place of our delusions of separation and guilt. Our inner Teacher shows us the face of Christ as we are willing to receive It. This is our practice for today.
