The Power of a Forgiving Smile

The truth is that gifts of Love can take on many different forms and sometimes appear in the most unexpected places. 

A couple of weeks ago, when Christmas shopping seemed to be at a peak, I took a trip to Walmart hoping to find some needed articles at a good price.

As I approached the women’s clothing area, I heard some children crying loudly and a swishing sound that I identified as that of a belt hitting against something or someone. Immediately, I had a mental SOS and felt compelled to move with my cart in their direction. As I got closer, I saw a woman beating some kids with a long thin belt that she had doubled over.

My immediate reaction was one of fear for the children and fury toward the woman. I had always made very harsh judgments against adults who are abusive to children. I felt personally violated and indignant at the scene I was witnessing. At first I had thoughts of counter attacking her verbally but, thanks to Spirit, I was able to choose peace first.

I invoked the angels of God’s peace and asked all of Heaven to accompany me. In my heart I knew I had to move quickly towards them, and I had to make myself physically present in that area. I had no idea what I was to do or say after that.

“I am here only to be truly helpful”, kept going through my mind. “I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do.” In the spirit of this wonderful prayer from ACIM, I arrived on the scene and didn’t stop until I was right in front of the woman. We were face to face.

Again I asked for help, “Spirit, please, please what am I to do now?” As I was thinking this, suddenly I felt a huge smile coming on, and I smiled at her with such tenderness. I felt God’s Love taking over my heart, my mind, my face, and it felt like the light of God’s mind was surrounding us.

I think the woman was as surprised at my smile as I was. She and I knew I had seen her beating the kids, and that was definitely not what either of us expected to happen.

My smile was filled with the honesty and true understanding of Spirit. She felt it, and I melted. We were safe, safe from our own thoughts and feelings. The Light of God’s Mind and His thoughts had taken over. The situation took a completely different course.

I asked her how many children she had. She said four were hers and four were her brother’s. She was shopping with eight kids!! Two of the smaller girls started talking to me. They had stopped crying. The mother pushed the belt deep into her pants pocket. There was a clear, soothing, and peaceful feeling in the air. Fear had vanished from everyone’s face; the mother’s, the children’s and mine. God had smiled at us and our hearts rested in that loving moment. No one in the store suspected such a miracle happening in their midst. I was guided to stay there for about 10 more minutes, just being there, representing another alternative, accepting the miracle. What a wonderful gift, my heart was singing!

What happened afterwards seemed unrelated, and was just as unexpected as the first incident. At the same time, it seemed to be an after effect of the grace that had descended just minutes before.

I was on line at the register, still in awe of what had just occurred. All of a sudden I was feeling very hungry and decided to have a piece of some cocktail size bread I had in my cart.

Almost simultaneously, the lady in front of me opened a package of turkey slices she had in her cart and started eating. She looked back at me and said, “I am sooo hungry. I can’t wait to get home and make myself a huge sandwich.”

I felt the synchronicity of the moment, and I offered her some of my bread suggesting that she make herself a small sandwich with my mini bread while she waited to pay. At first, she hesitated, but then she accepted the bread and said, “I’ll take the bread if you take some of my turkey so we can both have a sandwich. It’s Christmas, let’s celebrate.” 

So there we were in Walmart in line waiting to pay, one minute total strangers, the next eating turkey sandwiches in a light and joyful sharing, a simple celebration in the moment. We laughed at our spontaneous “breaking of bread.” I knew this was an extension of the miracle that had just happened. It extended into another blessed encounter. Once again, any sense of separation disappearing and joyful peace taking over. As I said before, gifts of Love can take on many different forms, and sometimes appear in the most unexpected places.

Healing of Beliefs

These are some thoughts that I recently received from Spirit.

You are allowing the Holy Spirit’s thoughts into your awareness, allowing the healing of beliefs that hide the truth of your sinlessness. You often find the mind in the darkness of despair. This need not be. The beliefs that hold the darkness are healed in your willingness. In your asking Holy Spirit to take what you do not want in exchange for His sight or correction, that is willingness.

It is only the ego that fears the letting go process. It is the “one” that holds what is valueless with tenacity. The ego clutches tightly to its illusions, protecting its life. If you desire wholly to know your Self then the un-whole purpose of the ego is revealed. You recognize that its purpose is not what you want. You desire to look past the shadows and veils to see the real world and your true Self.

The egoic thought has made the picture that you are deprived because of monetary debts that you are paying. This is the opportunity to give up the thought of deprivation (lack and scarcity) by realizing that all you give is given to yourself. You give only to yourself is another step to accepting there is/was no separation. Giving to yourself means there is no loss. It means there are no “others” that would take away the little that you have. There is only you, only One, in the Mind of God. All the “others” are simply your Self.

All others are but projections from the split mind. The images that the sick mind has made would maintain that separation is real. The purpose of such images and thoughts is to keep the Light that you Are hidden from you. You can be still and receive the peace and knowing that you desire. Illusions are not to be feared, only to be recognized as valueless.

Letting Peace Lead the Way

As we begin 2010, we are in the process of moving to Sanford, Florida, which is about 35 miles north of Orlando. We are moving to a small house in Sanford because it is nearby to a place that we think will become the future location of Pathways of Light. Because this new facility we found is unfinished, we will need to live nearby while we work on its completion.

Near Sanford we found a large and elegant but still unfinished 10,000 sq. ft. facility in a beautiful wooded area that would give us all the room and land we need to have seminars and weekend workshops plus house all our printing equipment and folders, cutters, computers, etc. In this new facility there will be several lovely suites available with private bathrooms that people could reserve during the year for vacations of rest, renewal and allowing the space for quiet listening to the Holy Spirit.

Guests would also have the option to join us for our daily group meditation and study of A Course in Miracles or receive a private Accessing Inner Wisdom Counseling. The new facility will be called, “Casa de Milagros” (house of miracles) because the focus will be on accepting and extending Holy Spirit’s miracles (letting our minds be healed by the Holy Spirit).

As all this has unfolded, we have had to practice being vigilant in watching our thoughts and accepting Holy Spirit’s gift of peace in the present moment. We have included two recent morning messages we received from Inner Guidance to help us through each step of the way as we continue to let each circumstance that shows up in our lives to be another opportunity to let our minds be transformed by the Holy Spirit:

Holy Spirit to Mary: With all your worldly activities, it is helpful to step back and remember Where you are in truth always. You and the whole Sonship are in Heaven now, dreaming of being on a distant shore, dreaming of being different from your Source.

Now is the time to step back, relax and let the peace of your true Self enter your heart and mind… Let peace seep into every corner…

Give time to letting go and letting this deep sense of peace take over… Let peace carry you to an awareness of Love’s Presence…

Let your inner Comforter take charge… Rest in His Love… Rest in His peace… Breathe the peace in as fully as you can… Let everything melt into God’s healing peace… Let this feeling of deep rest fill your awareness…

Now you need do nothing but accept the peace that is being offered you… Accept the gift and let it melt away everything that is not of God, your Source… Receive the gift that is beyond the world of change… receive the gift that never changes and is always there.

Give thanks that you are God’s Son… Give thanks that everyone is safe in God and has never left Heaven… Soak in this remembrance… Receive the blessings that come with accepting God’s gifts… Accept Heaven because it is yours today.

Holy Spirit to Robert: I am the place of rest in you that goes with you wherever you go. I am the part of your mind that remembers your Source. Let Me be your Guide in all your doing. I hold in your mind a single purpose that is shared with your Source. I hold the purpose that retains your unity with All That Is.

With Me as your Guide, all your doing serves this purpose, all your doing leads you toward true happiness. I will show you the truth beyond all appearances. Today let yourself rest in Me and I will guide your ways in forgiveness and gratitude. As one, we rest in the certainty and Love of God.

Simple, Uncomplicated Love

Mary: This morning we were guided to read Lesson 138: Heaven is the decision I must make. As I go to Spirit with this, it comes to me that Love is very simple and uncomplicated. Love is very uncluttered because it is pure with nothing added. I comes to me that if I want to be happy, the way to do this is to open my mind to Love’s healing Presence.

As I open my mind to Love, what was complicated before becomes simple and uncluttered. What is really unimportant falls away and the peace that comes with uncomplicated Love is increasingly felt. There is also a feeling of inner certainty and inner quiet that straightens out a path that appeared complex before. There is a very gentle feeling that underneath all the complexity of the world of separate bodies, all is well. What appeared hard before now seems very simple and easy and quiet.

Simple, uncomplicated Love. My focus for today is on accepting what is true. If truth be known, I do not need the ego’s complications. I do not need the efforting and tension that comes with its complicated images. Simple, uncomplicated Love. That is all I need today. As I practice accepting the peace that comes with this, what seemed complicated before disappears in Love’s soft healing Light. Today I let simple, uncomplicated Love light my way and I am grateful that It is always there, waiting for my acceptance.

Robert: If I want to have a blessed day, all I need to do is bless. I bless by seeing with Christ’s vision. I do this by letting the Holy Spirit, my true Self, be my Interpreter in every moment. The one Self we share is Love and sees only Love. Today I dedicate to seeing with Christ’s vision of Love. Thus will I have the blessing of experiencing my oneness with all my brothers. Love’s blessing is now and forever.

Love Is Our Only Way Out of Fear

For a few weeks I had been feeling down, low, and just not myself. My self-esteem was being hit in a hard way.

From outside appearances no one would have known. Also, by outside appearances, people would have been surprised based on me having a good job, a good salary, a wonderful home and significant other, and having my own business.

A spiraling feeling of sadness was coming over me and I felt I was not in touch with this sadness. Fear was settling in, which of course just made matters worst. The icing on the cake was my connection to the Holy Spirit was weak.

My morning meditation attempts failed and slowly dwindled. I was definitely in a slump.

As usual, I used the excuse that work was too overwhelming, stress-filled, and I was still digging my self out of the ‘project hole’. I could feel my ego taking over big time and I could not seem to get a handle on things. Even my own business, which I just love and enjoy to work on, became overwhelming and stress-filled. I could sense the urge to point fingers outward at everyone I saw, but I knew better. This made me even more sad, and angry with myself.

The ego mind is so complex and deceptive!

I had had enough. One Saturday morning I awoke with determination for that day, to set aside time for myself and to allow the Holy Spirit in. My morning meditation, while not brilliant, had brought me peace. My inner Teacher knew what I needed, and I could then sense and feel a brewing within. I describe this as a deep inner churning with a direction of spiraling outward. This was my cue that levels of guilt in my unconscious mind were coming to the surface to be exposed.

Even though I wished that the knowledge would come right there and then, I knew I was not quite ready to hear.

I continued my day with reading in A Course in Miracles, and more peace surrounded me. I was able to sit down and quietly write our weekly e-zine, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide me.

But then, my mind kept creeping back to those overwhelming and stress-filled thoughts. Churn, churn, churn, something is coming up, big time.

So I grabbed one of my books to read, one that supports Pathways of Light courses, and I read the sentence, “Loving ourselves is our only way out of fear.” Sometimes the Holy Spirit has to hit me over the head to get my attention.

My first recognition was that I did not love myself, and that I was not taking responsibility for all the outer turmoil I was creating. Then, I realized that I go in cycles, and since I create the cycles this is my opportunity to release, forgive, and expand my self-esteem.

I also recognized that when I am diligent in doing the Course in MIracles Workbook lessons, apply forgiveness and turn everything over to the Holy Spirit, I am at peace. When I am not diligent and consistent, I fall into my cycle of sadness and low self-esteem, and you know what falls downhill from there!

I was feeling like I had only hit the tip of the iceberg. I put the book down and asked the Holy Spirit for more information and began to meditate. The floodgates opened, I was now ready to receive. Spirit revealed to me the words: doubt, frustration, and stagnation.

A knowing filled me as I realize that these words applied to every aspect in my life right now. As I brought these words to Gods alter of forgiveness, I saw three huge boulders sitting atop. In capital letters and as large as can be, I saw the word ‘doubt’ etched into the boulder, the next boulder read ‘frustration’, and the third read ‘stagnation’. (Side note: thank you for the visual Mary).

Each boulder I gave up into the light for the Holy Spirit to heal. As these boulders entered into the light, I actually heard a sizzling sound as the boulders dissolved into the unreality that they were. A sigh of relief and release was felt all through my mind. Peace returned and a new perspective was reached. Tears filled my eyes as I gave thanks to the Holy Spirit for the miracle.
