I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my seeing.
1. The idea for today is another step in learning that the thoughts which give rise to what you see are never neutral or unimportant. ²It also emphasizes the idea that minds are joined, which will be given increasing stress later on.
2. Today’s idea does not refer to what you see as much as to how you see it. ²Therefore, the exercises for today emphasize this aspect of your perception. ³The three or four practice periods which are recommended should be done as follows:
3. Look about you, selecting subjects for the application of the idea for today as randomly as possible, and keeping your eyes on each one long enough to say:
²I am not alone in experiencing the effects of how I see _____.
³Conclude each practice period by repeating the more general statement:
⁴I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my seeing.
⁵A minute or so, or even less, will be sufficient for each practice period. (ACIM, W-18.1:1–3:5)
2025
Our thoughts are projected outward, and our eyes show us these thoughts. Our mind then interprets the thoughts to give meaning to them, which is referred to as our perception of what is happening. Add to that the new fact that our minds are joined, and it is clear that our thoughts are never neutral or unimportant.
My eyes do not inform my mind; they report what my mind has already chosen to believe.
I learned to watch my thoughts carefully, choosing to keep those that reflected love and release those that reflected fear. As a result, I am far more peaceful than I used to be, and I have put less darkness into the mind we share.
I always assumed that everyone saw objects in the same way. But this isn’t true. I looked at my computer this morning and realized that my history with computers is different than some people’s. I love my computer because it keeps me in touch with other ACIM friends. Otherwise, I would be alone in my study and joining with others has been so very beneficial for me. Others may perceive the computer as a handy tool. I know some who perceive it as the bane of their existence because it causes more problems than solutions for them.
Because I perceive my computer as something I love and appreciate, each time I sit down to it, I settle into a peaceful state and am generally productive in whatever I am doing. I use a Mac, but when I was working, we had PCs. I did not feel the same way about this computer. I perceived the PC to be a problem, and so that is what it was for me. Apple and Apple users convinced me that this brand was much better, and so that is what it is for me. Our minds are very powerful.
2026
Since I am absolutely convinced that my eyes show me what my mind thinks, and my perception of what I see determines my experience with it, you would think I would choose to see only love and experience only peace. But you would be wrong. I have seen lack and experienced the grief of loss. I have experienced hate because I believe in fear and guilt. At first, it seemed out of my hands, that sometimes the world caused these things, and I had no choice in the matter since I couldn’t change the world. However, I am learning differently.
I feel fear when I forget who I am and where I am. So I remind myself that I am the holy Son of God, and I am where He established me. All else is an illusion, a dream. I remain safe and loved. And sometimes that is not enough because while the world is not real, this experience of it is. So I have compassion for myself rather than feeling like a bad Course student. I forgive my errors and ask the Holy Spirit for help in seeing differently. I ask that He heal my mind and remove the false beliefs that I am using to cause myself this distress.
I found this passage from Chapter 8 to be helpful.
2. The distractions of the ego may seem to interfere with your learning, but the ego has no power to distract you unless you give it the power to do so. ²The ego’s voice is an hallucination. ³You cannot expect it to say “I am not real.” ⁴Yet you are not asked to dispel your hallucinations alone. ⁵You are merely asked to evaluate them in terms of their results to you. ⁶If you do not want them on the basis of loss of peace, they will be removed from your mind for you. (ACIM, T-8.I.2:1-6)
I have put this to the test, and I know it will work if I really want the thoughts removed for me. I’ve also experienced it not seeming to work, and I understand why. Sometimes I want to be free of the effects of my thoughts, but I am not ready to release the thought. That’s okay because if I continue to choose the idea of freedom, I will convince myself I want the actual freedom, and then it is done.
Often it is the feeling of fear that keeps me in the fear. I remind myself that emotion happens, but it cannot hurt me. It is just a physical response to something I believe. Change the belief, and the emotion fades naturally, without being fought or denied. I’m learning to disregard the emotion of fear, but I still respond to it at first. I just don’t have to continue to believe it. Instead, I can let it be a message to let me know that my beliefs need to be evaluated and released.
And we are back to the purpose of this lesson. Thoughts cause the world, and my perception of their effects decide my experience of it. Now we can add one more component; we are not alone in experiencing the effect of our seeing. Our minds are connected, and my fear affects the whole. It is as if adding my fear to the whole tilts it toward a tendency to choose fear. Or, choosing love tilts it more toward that choice. I know what I want to add to the mind we all share. So I am open to correction when I move toward fear. Knowing this, I do not condemn myself when fear arises. I simply become willing to be corrected, because what I choose is never for myself alone.

I see no neutral things.
1. This idea is another step in the direction of identifying cause and effect as it really operates in the world. ²You see no neutral things because you have no neutral thoughts. ³It is always the thought that comes first, despite the temptation to believe that it is the other way around. ⁴This is not the way the world thinks, but you must learn that it is the way you think. ⁵If it were not so, perception would have no cause, and would itself be the cause of reality. ⁶In view of its highly variable nature, this is hardly likely.
2. In applying today’s idea, say to yourself, with eyes open:
²I see no neutral things because I have no neutral thoughts.
³Then look about you, resting your glance on each thing you note long enough to say:
⁴I do not see a neutral _____, because my thoughts about _________ are not neutral.
⁵For example, you might say:
⁶I do not see a neutral wall, because my thoughts about walls are not neutral.
⁷I do not see a neutral body, because my thoughts about bodies are not neutral.
3. As usual, it is essential to make no distinctions between what you believe to be animate or inanimate; pleasant or unpleasant. ²Regardless of what you may believe, you do not see anything that is really alive or really joyous. ³That is because you are unaware as yet of any thought that is really true, and therefore really happy.
4. Three or four specific practice periods are recommended, and no less than three are required for maximum benefit, even if you experience resistance. ²However, if you do, the length of the practice period may be reduced to less than the minute or so that is otherwise recommended. (ACIM, W-17.1:1–4:2)
2025
The point of this exercise and the ones before it is to be sure we understand cause and effect and get the order correct. Thought comes first, always, with no exceptions. From thought comes the illusory world I used to believe in. Now, I sometimes believe in it briefly, and then I go back to remembering that the world is the effect of thought. Also, how I see it, that is, my perception of it, is the effect of my thoughts.
This is a very different way of looking at things. Even noticing that nothing I looked at was neutral was interesting, not having thought about that since I last did this lesson. What I am learning is not just that thought comes first, but that my experience faithfully follows it.
For a while, like many people, I got caught up in politics. I would read about some politician and judge his or her behavior. But here’s the thing. Whether I thought they were wonderful or awful, those judgments came before I saw them in the person.
I wasn’t seeing a politician and deciding who it was. I was looking for guilt or innocence and found what I was looking for.
No wonder we are told that we shouldn’t judge. We don’t even admit to ourselves that we decided what we would see before we saw it. Clearly, with such a fundamental error, we don’t know or understand anything.
People want the world to be a better place. In other words, we want other people to do better, so we like our world better. Now that we have cause and effect in the right order, there is only one effective thing we can do. We can look within for the source of the problem and let the Holy Spirit correct our thoughts.
2026
Having decided that I want the Holy Spirit to make all decisions for me, I expect to level up. I might need to practice this because it is not my accustomed way of thinking, not the paradigm I’m used to. But maybe not. Listening to a Rabbi talk about this, I saw another way. He said that if trauma can happen in a moment, healing can too. An insight, an inner seeing, can create a shift instantly, and I am open to that as well.
Can you imagine your life if the Holy Spirit made all your decisions for you? Can you see that life would be utterly peaceful, joyful, interesting, and carefree? Do you feel a little pang of resistance, like, maybe that would be boring? I used to think that, but even with the incomplete healing I have experienced, I have not found my life boring at all. It is full and very satisfying.
I look forward to seeing what it is like to live a fearless life, free of guilt and judgment. With these things gone, all that is left is love, peace, and joy. I have experienced enough of that to know it is what I want all the time, without these interruptions that occur when I make decisions with the ego. I know that what I see begins with what I think, so I have a clear mirror to reflect back the problem should I stumble along the way. It will always be a thought, a belief that needs to be seen and forgiven, let go, so that my mind returns to peace.
If I look on a world in chaos, I ask the Holy Spirit to correct my thoughts. When my mind is single, there will be no divisive thoughts, and I will no longer see chaos. At first, I wondered how that could be when so clearly there is chaos everywhere I look right now. But then I heard someone say that they didn’t understand that. They thought everything was great right now. Oh, yes, that’s right. I always see what I look for, not to fix it in the world, but to heal it in my mind. So I asked the Holy Spirit to help me see differently.
Then I saw divisiveness rising up before me, but only so that I could heal it. Same thing with hate and fear, coming to my attention so that it could be healed. The world is delivering that message to me, and I am finally becoming aware of it. I know what to do now. I look around and see brothers and sisters not lost in their fear, but rather each finding their own way through this illusion, and I just want to help. I do so as I let the Holy Spirit replace judgment and suspicion with love and trust.
My vision of the world looks different now because my thoughts are different. That’s always the way it works. Thought first, then sight. I see what I choose to see, and my thoughts determine my choice. I am happy to look to the Holy Spirit for correction when what I see alerts me to an error in my thinking. The Holy Spirit will give me another way to view the world, and each time I do this, my mind clears a bit more, bringing me closer to true perception and a happier, more peaceful life.

I have no neutral thoughts.
1. The idea for today is a beginning step in dispelling the belief that your thoughts have no effect. ²Everything you see is the result of your thoughts. ³There is no exception to this fact. ⁴Thoughts are not big or little; powerful or weak. ⁵They are merely true or false. ⁶Those that are true create their own likeness. ⁷Those that are false make theirs.
2. There is no more self-contradictory concept than that of “idle thoughts.” ²What gives rise to the perception of a whole world can hardly be called idle. ³Every thought you have contributes to truth or to illusion; either it extends the truth or it multiplies illusions. ⁴You can indeed multiply nothing, but you will not extend it by doing so.
3. Besides your recognizing that thoughts are never idle, salvation requires that you also recognize that every thought you have brings either peace or war; either love or fear. ²A neutral result is impossible because a neutral thought is impossible. ³There is such a temptation to dismiss fear thoughts as unimportant, trivial and not worth bothering about that it is essential you recognize them all as equally destructive, but equally unreal. ⁴We will practice this idea in many forms before you really understand it.
4. In applying the idea for today, search your mind for a minute or so with eyes closed, and actively seek not to overlook any “little” thought that may tend to elude the search. ²This is quite difficult until you get used to it. ³You will find that it is still hard for you not to make artificial distinctions. ⁴Every thought that occurs to you, regardless of the qualities that you assign to it, is a suitable subject for applying today’s idea.
5. In the practice periods, first repeat the idea to yourself, and then as each one crosses your mind hold it in awareness while you tell yourself:
²This thought about _________ is not a neutral thought.
³That thought about _________ is not a neutral thought.
⁴As usual, use today’s idea whenever you are aware of a particular thought that arouses uneasiness. ⁵The following form is suggested for this purpose:
⁶This thought about ____________ is not a neutral thought, because I have no neutral thoughts.
6. Four or five practice periods are recommended, if you find them relatively effortless. ²If strain is experienced, three will be enough. ³The length of the exercise period should also be reduced if there is discomfort. (ACIM, W-16.1:1–6:3)
2025
I woke up with anxiety this morning. It was mostly about my children. My daughter had surgery yesterday, and it was rough. My son, who is living with me now, has been deeply depressed. Thoughts about them crowded my mind. Those thoughts were not neutral, and they were creating in their likeness. Yikes! It was like I had not learned anything from the Course.
So, what I did was to review all the lessons up to this one because I knew the answer was there, but the ego thoughts were obscuring it. At first, it wasn’t helping, but I persisted. Soon, I began to smile. It is easy to get caught up in the story that is unfolding and forget the purpose. I can use the story to go more deeply into the illusion or give it to the Holy Spirit to lift me out of the darkness. I chose the Holy Spirit, and He never lets me down.
2026
We have talked about the importance of our thoughts as we’ve read the previous lessons and also from the Text. Today, Jesus wants to take us deeper into this understanding. There is so much for us to learn about our thoughts in this one lesson that we cannot have neutral thoughts. He begins by reinforcing a previous idea that all thoughts have an effect. In fact, everything you see is an effect of thought. Our thoughts projected outward make up the world we see. He emphasizes this as he tells us that ³There is no exception to this fact.
Last night, for a few minutes, I entertained the idea that the world is coming apart at the seams. All kinds of fear thoughts showed up to support this idea. When I looked at the world, I saw what I believed in that moment. I read something in the news that caught my attention, and the more I thought about it, the worse everything seemed.
If I had continued in that vein, I would have been deeply depressed, and I would have convinced myself that I am here and here is real.
But I do understand the power of thought, and this is not what I want to share within our one mind. I don’t want to strengthen these ideas and help them gain more momentum. I asked Jesus for help to untangle my mind from this kind of thinking, and I received it. But this very uncomfortable situation had a message for me. It reminded me that if the world seems out of control, it is because the mind is simply unhealed in that moment, not wrong. We can bring our thoughts back into alignment with Love, and the world will take on that form.
Actually, it already has for me. This morning, I look at the world, and I see many untrue thoughts rising to the surface to be seen and transformed. That’s a far different world than the one I was seeing last night. I changed my mind, and I changed the world I saw. I also added light to a darkened place in the mind, and so I helped thousands of others who were ready to make that shift. I am learning to respect the power of my thoughts.
This idea is reflected in Lesson 106 which says this:
Be still and listen to the truth today. ²For each five minutes spent in listening, a thousand minds are opened to the truth and they will hear the holy Word you hear. ³And when the hour is past, you will again release a thousand more who pause to ask that truth be given them, along with you. (ACIM, W-106.9:1-3)
In Chapter 2 we are told that ¹³There are no idle thoughts. ¹⁴All thinking produces form at some level. (ACIM, T-2.VI.9:13-14) This is echoed in today’s lesson. There is no more self-contradictory concept than that of “idle thoughts.” We are told that our thoughts produce form, and they also decide how we perceive what we have brought to form. It is not my thoughts alone that produced the form we see today, but they played a part. Even that I believe I can think apart from others is a major misconception. There are no private thoughts. We think with the same mind, and that cannot be too often noted.
I am watching my thoughts and choosing to forgive those I don’t want to propagate. When I see someone else expressing thoughts that are not in our best interest, I forgive that, too. Now that I understand the impact of my thoughts, I see this as a profitable way to spend my time, and it takes almost no effort on my part. When a friend expressed her anger at a political decision that she didn’t agree with, I didn’t try to talk her out of her opinion. I just love her and support her as she finds a way to navigate her path to enlightenment. I do the same for myself.
Forgiveness is simplified as I now recognize that there are no neutral thoughts and so no neutral effects. I know each thought brings me either peace or war, love or fear, and then I choose the effect I want to experience, and forgive the other and let it go. So simple.

My thoughts are images that I have made.
1. It is because the thoughts you think you think appear as images that you do not recognize them as nothing. ²You think you think them, and so you think you see them. ³This is how your “seeing” was made. ⁴This is the function you have given your body’s eyes. ⁵It is not seeing. ⁶It is image making. ⁷It takes the place of seeing, replacing vision with illusions.
2. This introductory idea to the process of image making that you call seeing will not have much meaning for you. ²You will begin to understand it when you have seen little edges of light around the same familiar objects which you see now. ³That is the beginning of real vision. ⁴You can be certain that real vision will come quickly when this has occurred.
3. As we go along, you may have many “light episodes.” ²They may take many different forms, some of them quite unexpected. ³Do not be afraid of them. ⁴They are signs that you are opening your eyes at last. ⁵They will not persist, because they merely symbolize true perception, and they are not related to knowledge. ⁶These exercises will not reveal knowledge to you. ⁷But they will prepare the way to it.
4. In practicing the idea for today, repeat it first to yourself, and then apply it to whatever you see around you, using its name and letting your eyes rest on it as you say:
²This _________ is an image that I have made.
³That _________ is an image that I have made.
⁴It is not necessary to include a large number of specific subjects for the application of today’s idea. ⁵It is necessary, however, to continue to look at each subject while you repeat the idea to yourself. ⁶The idea should be repeated quite slowly each time.
5. Although you will obviously not be able to apply the idea to very many things during the minute or so of practice that is recommended, try to make the selection as random as possible. ²Less than a minute will do for the practice periods, if you begin to feel uneasy. ³Do not have more than three application periods for today’s idea unless you feel completely comfortable with it, and do not exceed four. ⁴However, the idea can be applied as needed throughout the day. (ACIM, W-15.1:1–5:4)
2025
This is a favorite lesson. It thrills me to look at what appears to be a solid and real object and realize that it is just an image I wanted to see. The eyes are like virtual reality goggles. They don’t show us what is there. They show us what we want to be there. Sometimes, this is pretty cool stuff. I want coffee to exist, and there it is. That was one of our best ideas. That and chocolate.
But sometimes, I want a place to put my guilt, and those images are not so pleasant. From the perspective of the ego, the eyes serve to convince us the world is real. And because the images seem to be outside our minds, we can believe we have no responsibility for them. Thus, someone or something else is guilty of them.
Used by the Holy Spirit, they show us what it is in our minds that yet needs to be healed. And sometimes, they show us a manifestation of a miracle as the mind is healed. What a blessing that can be.
2026
I am not making images with my real thoughts, just with the thoughts I think I think. So the world is a picture of the ego, and that explains why it is so filled with fearful images. As our minds begin to heal, the images we make will be less fearful and sometimes lovely, and yet will not rise to the level of reality. To be Home I will eventually let the world be undone in my mind, not by effort, but by no longer needing it. So that’s my ultimate goal, and I reach it as I use these lessons to heal my mind.
What am I giving up today, Holy Spirit? I know that it is a matter of deciding to let go of what is not in alignment with my true nature. But I have believed the ego for a very long time, and I need help making the right decision. For that reason, I place my questions in the Holy Spirit’s care and trust the answer that rises in quiet. I can still become confused by the apparent array of choices. The Holy Spirit is never confused. He knows there are only two choices: reality or illusion. As I follow His guidance, I learn that there are not many choices but only two.
I am choosing to be even more aware of my thoughts than I have in the past. This lesson reminds me of the importance of that choice. The thoughts I choose will populate my illusion. When I notice myself worrying about my friend, I am already watching a picture of guilt being projected, and the mind obligingly fills the world with images that match that belief.
If I worry about my bank account and the expensive glasses I had to buy, then I will make more images of lack. Why would I do that now that I understand where these images come from and understand that I can choose differently?
Holy Spirit, I want to image only that which represents my true Self, so I ask that you make decisions for me today and every day. I rest in the trust I place in You. Today I lay my images at Your feet, Holy Spirit, and ask You to show me the light behind them until I no longer need to see at all.

God did not create a meaningless world.
1. The idea for today is, of course, the reason why a meaningless world is impossible. ²What God did not create does not exist. ³And everything that does exist exists as He created it. ⁴The world you see has nothing to do with reality. ⁵It is of your own making, and it does not exist.
2. The exercises for today are to be practiced with eyes closed throughout. ²The mind-searching period should be short, a minute at most. ³Do not have more than three practice periods with today’s idea unless you find them comfortable. ⁴If you do, it will be because you really understand what they are for.
3. The idea for today is another step in learning to let go the thoughts that you have written on the world, and see the Word of God in their place. ²The early steps in this exchange, which can truly be called salvation, can be quite difficult and even quite painful. ³Some of them will lead you directly into fear. ⁴You will not be left there. ⁵You will go far beyond it. ⁶Our direction is toward perfect safety and perfect peace.
4. With eyes closed, think of all the horrors in the world that cross your mind. ²Name each one as it occurs to you, and then deny its reality. ³God did not create it, and so it is not real. ⁴Say, for example:
⁵God did not create that war, and so it is not real.
⁶God did not create that airplane crash, and so it is not real.
⁷God did not create that disaster [specify], and so it is not real.
5. Suitable subjects for the application of today’s idea also include anything you are afraid might happen to you, or to anyone about whom you are concerned. ²In each case, name the “disaster” quite specifically. ³Do not use general terms. ⁴For example, do not say, “God did not create illness,” but, “God did not create cancer,” or heart attacks, or whatever may arouse fear in you.
6. This is your personal repertory of horrors at which you are looking. ²These things are part of the world you see. ³Some of them are shared illusions, and others are part of your personal hell. ⁴It does not matter. ⁵What God did not create can only be in your own mind apart from His. ⁶Therefore, it has no meaning. ⁷In recognition of this fact, conclude the practice periods by repeating today’s idea:
⁸God did not create a meaningless world.
7. The idea for today can, of course, be applied to anything that disturbs you during the day, aside from the practice periods. ²Be very specific in applying it. ³Say:
⁴God did not create a meaningless world. ⁵He did not create [specify the situation which is disturbing you], and so it is not real. (ACIM, W-14.1:1–7:5)
2025
I’ve done these lessons a number of times, and I don’t want my contemplations to become rote, the same old - same old. It doesn’t mean the horrors will necessarily be different, but I want the list to be genuine and the feelings that come with it to be genuine. So I began with, Lord, here I am. And I waited as my mind cleared of the meaningless thoughts, knowing that I would be guided to the horrors I needed to see.
I took my time and let each one have its moment. And when I followed it with “and so it is not real,” I let myself feel the relief that comes with that belief. I started with the immediate, my son’s depression.
I ended with a more general cruelty, unkindness and self-centeredness of the separated ones. And with each, I reminded myself that not one of them could be real because God did not create them. Afterward, I felt peace and strength knowing that we are as God created us and will always be so, no matter what we dream up to experience.
God did not create a meaningless world.
2026
That first paragraph is pure gold. I suppose that if I were willing to absorb this and take it in completely, suffering would be over in this lifetime. I am so impressed with the simplicity and perfection of this.
God did not create a meaningless world.
²What God did not create does not exist.
³And everything that does exist exists as He created it.
⁴The world you see has nothing to do with reality.
⁵It is of your own making, and it does not exist.
In fact, it is so perfectly clear that I noticed out of the corner of my eye a picture I had saved to my desktop months ago and never used or deleted, so I posted it in my Just Stuff I Like group on Facebook. Then I read jokes others had left, and I had not seen yet. Got a few chuckles out of it and finally came to the one I thought I hadn’t posted. Seems I did after all and just forgot to delete it from my screen. (Eye roll here) So I did that, and while I was there, I cleaned up a couple of other things. And that explains my life and why I am still suffering and need to practice this lesson.
So what about my present horrors? Well, ever since my brother died suddenly, I have this barely acknowledged, underlying unease. What if someone else dies? For instance, what if I lost a child? And off and running, my imagination goes, and I can see how easy it would be for that to happen. Oh, yeah, now it’s not unacknowledged or barely noticed. It’s jumping up and down and waving its arms in my mind.
But God did not create a meaningless world, and what He did not create does not exist. He did not create death and unthinkable loss. This world is my own creation and has nothing to do with reality. And now I want to cry out of relief. Does this mean that my story could never take that turn? Of course it could, but it would still be a story, illusion, a dream. If I insist on believing my world is real, death and loss will feel real to me. I am not waiting for something to be healed — I am remembering that nothing ever happened to the Son of God.
Knowing this, why do I insist on believing in the world I made? Why do I refuse to accept the truth? I suppose that I still choose to believe that letting go of the identification with my character is letting go of me. I must still believe that I would cease to exist if “Myron” ceased to be real to me. That’s just nuts, but while I indulge in that insanity, I don’t pretend not to. I am at least that honest. And I am ready to let go of the illusion and accept my true identity.
It seems to me that I am failing to reach my goal, that I am fighting against what I really want. But I don’t think that’s what’s happening. I think that I am actually making great progress. I can see very clearly what I am doing, the degree of my denial, the fear of awakening that used to be so hidden that I would never acknowledge it. Now, I am not only acknowledging it, but I am also sharing it with you, without shame and without fear. So, yes, real progress has happened.
The personal world I made cannot be real because God did not create it. My personal horrors, therefore, do not exist – never did, never will. I seem to be living in a memory of something that never actually happened, and is not happening now. I am willing to dream a happier dream until I wake up. The relief I feel when I say this is indescribable. Holy Spirit, help me keep this truth in my mind from now on. I want to accept my true Identity now.
