Letting Love Lead the Way

Spiritual Poverty

Spiritual poverty
The term spiritual poverty is at times used to denote a state of being devoid of spiritual connection or awareness, which results in or appears as lack, fear, separation, etc. However anything that is not love, unified, whole, etc.  is ultimately “not real;” but what does that actually mean? Certainly fear, lack or “spiritual poverty” are felt as reality in our EXPERIENCE, and so to say that they are not real is not a denial that the experience feels real. Rather “it is not real” means that these experiences do not touch, harm or change the truth of our Being, which is Awareness, Consciousness, Spirit. So, in this sense to say that one is in a state of spiritual poverty is the ultimate misnomer as it is suggesting that one is other than what they are or that they are separate from their Essence; this is an impossibility.  But to say that one THINKS or BELIEVES that they are spiritually poor makes sense and is the thread that runs through most of humanity for it is the belief that we are simply flesh and blood rather than being spiritual in nature and human in experience.
The correction then to “spiritual poverty” or any perceived lack for that matter, is to face the Truth or to turn back to your Self; to remember your essence as Love/Bliss, Pure Consciousness (meaning the ultimate and only subject and not an object of any sort), or Spirit/Presence (all words which point to the same underlying Reality of all existence. Asking the question “Who/What am I, which is referred to often as self inquiry, and remaining in the openness of that question without buying into the minds attempts to formulate an answer, is a means of turning back to the Self-the one subject. The answer to the question is wordless and is experienced as spaciousness and wholeness. To be in that space allows for an experience/understanding of the reality that spiritual poverty could never truly occur because “we” could never lose our Self- our oneness with God.
ACIM states the following:
T-1.VI.2, 4-6: A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need correct…Belief produces the acceptance of existence. That is why you can believe what no one else thinks is true. It is true for you because it was made by you.

Our experiences are a reflection of our beliefs. To release the belief in “spiritual poverty” or being deprived of Spirit-God, frees us up to experience our True Nature-as a part and expression of the one Divine Mind and this is where all true freedom lies.
