Teaching and Learning Only Love Is Real

When pupil and teacher come together, a teaching-learning situation begins. For the teacher is not really the one who does the teaching. God’s Teacher speaks to any two who join together for learning purposes. The relationship is holy because of that purpose, and God has promised to send His Spirit into any holy relationship. In the teaching-learning situation, each one learns that giving and receiving are the same. The demarcations they have drawn between their roles, their minds, their bodies, their needs, their interests, and all the differences they thought separated them from one another, fade and grow dim and disappear. Those who would learn the same course share one interest and one goal. And thus he who was the learner becomes a teacher of God himself, for he has made the one decision that gave his teacher to him. He has seen in another person the same interests as his own.

The teachers of God have no set teaching level. Each teaching-learning situation involves a different relationship at the beginning, although the ultimate goal is always the same; to make of the relationship a holy relationship, in which both can look upon the Son of God as sinless. (A Course in Miracles, M-2.5;3.1:1-2)

Everyone is called to be a teacher of God. Everyone is called to awaken to Love. These calls are one and the same for everyone needs to teach only Love to learn that they are only Love. This is the call of our heart, coming from our true Self Whose sole desire is to be Love and nothing else.

Not everyone engaged in the ego’s dream answers the call. Yet this call is ever present. It is experienced as a need to search for something that seems to be missing. It is felt as a longing or sadness, even as guilt and fear. These feelings are the inevitable effect of denying the reality of Love.

If we follow the ego’s lead, we will be on a constant search that never satisfies for the ego does not know what Love is. But the call from within continues until we decide there must be a better way. Now our minds open to the Teacher within Who can lead us to the ultimate goal of seeing everyone sinless, including ourselves. We are led to accept our one Self as God created It.

God Is Our Friend

Do you not understand that to oppose the Holy Spirit is to fight yourself? He tells you but your will; He speaks for you. In His Divinity is but your own. And all He knows is but your knowledge, saved for you that you may do your will through [the Holy Spirit]. God asks you do your will. He joins with you. …God is no enemy to you. He asks no more than that He hear you call Him “Friend.”

How wonderful it is to do your will! For that is freedom. There is nothing else that ever should be called by freedom’s name. Unless you do your will you are not free. And would God leave His Son without what he has chosen for himself? God but ensured that you would never lose your will when He gave you His perfect Answer [Holy Spirit]. Hear It now, that you may be reminded of His Love and learn your will.

Look once again upon your enemy, the one you chose to hate instead of love. For thus was hatred born into the world, and thus the rule of fear established there. Now hear God speak to you, through Him Who is His Voice and yours as well, reminding you that it is not your will to hate and be a prisoner to fear, a slave to death, a little creature with a little life. Your will is boundless; it is not your will that it be bound. What lies in you has joined with God Himself in all creation’s birth. (A Course in Miracles, T-30.II.1:1-6,11-12;2:1-7;3:1-5. The Will of our true Self is to be Love and extend Love. This is the Will we share with God. God is our Friend because He wills the best for us — eternal Love, perfect peace and joy. Nothing less than this will content us, for it would be against our Will.

The ego’s wish to be separate and special is in direct opposition to the Will of our true Self. The ego’s wish is reflected in the world of bodies. To believe a brother is a body is to hate him because it is a belief that would limit the Love he is and therefore deny Love. Death is the ego world’s ultimate symbol of successful denial of Love. But this could never be anything but an illusion. Only Love is real and therefore changeless.

Our identification with the ego belief system puts us in opposition to God. To make our belief seem true, the ego has built a dream of images that seem to confirm the reality of separation, fear and guilt. God answered this dream by providing the Holy Spirit in our mind to remind us of our true Self.

The Holy Spirit’s function is to teach us that only Love is real. He does this by offering His loving perception as a replacement for the fearful perceptions of the ego. He is offering us the remembrance of our true Will that we share with God.

Today we practice asking for and accepting the Holy Spirit’s perception in place of our own. We want to remember our Self.

Forgiveness Releases Us from the Dream of Fear

God is the Love in which I forgive.

For­giveness is the great need of this world, but that is because it is a world of illusions. Those who forgive are thus releasing themselves from illusions, while those who withhold forgiveness are binding themselves to [illusions]. As you condemn only yourself, so do you forgive only yourself.

Yet although God does not forgive, His Love is nevertheless the basis of forgiveness. Fear condemns and love forgives. Forgiveness thus undoes what fear has produced, returning the mind to the awareness of God. For this reason, forgiveness can truly be called salvation. It is the means by which illusions dis­appear.

God is the Love in which I forgive you, [name].

The world was made to make lovelessness seem real. It is the effect of the denial of Love’s Reality. Fear is the absence of Love and thus the world is in a continuous state of fear. Fear is possible only because of belief that lovelessness is possible and “true.”

Forgiveness is inspired by Love. Forgiveness recognizes that illusions are not true and lets them go. The thought system that made the world cannot teach forgiveness because it does not know what Love is. But we have the Teacher of Love in our mind, always available to help us see past illusions and let them go. When we are willing to accept the Holy Spirit’s lessons in Love, we learn to recognize illusions for what they are and freely dismiss them as we welcome the Presence of Love.

God’s Love is eternally in us and His Voice is always ready to guide us to see the reality of Love everywhere. As we practice reminding ourselves today that God is the Love in which we forgive our brothers and ourselves, we are releasing ourselves from the dream of fear. We are accepting God’s gift of all of His Love.

Freeing Ourselves to Be Happy

This is the Thought [God still is Love, and this is not His Will] whose function is to save by giving you its function as your own. Salvation is your function, with the One [Holy Spirit] to Whom the plan was given. Now are you entrusted with this plan, along with Him. He has one answer to appearances; regardless of their form, their size, their depth or any attribute they seem to have:

Salvation is my only function here.
God still is Love, and this is not His Will.

You who will yet work miracles, be sure you practice well the idea for today. Try to perceive the strength in what you say, for these are words in which your freedom lies. Your Father loves you. All the world of pain is not His Will. Forgive yourself the thought He wanted this for you. Then let the Thought with which He has replaced all your mistakes enter the darkened places of your mind that thought the thoughts that never were His Will. God has given us a plan that will free us from the dream of fear and guilt. There are two parts to His plan. He gave us His Voice, the Holy Spirit, to ensure that you could still receive His communication beyond the ego’s wall of denial of God’s Love. And He gave the Holy Spirit the function to help us forgive our belief in the ego’s denial of Love. God ensured that we could never break our eternal unity with Him.

The thought, “God is still Love, and this is not His Will,” gives us leverage to disconnect from our belief in the ego’s lies. When anything disturbs our peace, we can use this thought to remind ourselves that the ego’s belief system is not true. This reminder helps us disconnect from our allegiance to the ego and make way for the Holy Spirit to help us let go of our mistaken beliefs. It is our willingness to accept the Holy Spirit’s help that frees us to remember that we are still Love at Home in God. it frees us to accept that our will is the same as God’s Will — to be Love, in changeless peace and perfect happiness.

Accepting Holy Spirit’s Healing Dream

God willed [your brother] waken gently and with joy, and gave him means to waken without fear.

Accept the dream [the Holy Spirit] gave instead of yours. …Rest in the Holy Spirit, and allow His gentle dreams to take the place of those you dreamed in terror and in fear of death.

Dream softly of your sinless brother, who unites with you in holy innocence. And from this dream the Lord of Heaven will Himself awaken His beloved Son. Dream of your brother’s kindnesses instead of dwelling in your dreams on his mistakes. Select his thoughtfulness to dream about instead of counting up the hurts he gave. Forgive him his illusions, and give thanks to him for all the helpfulness he gave. And do not brush aside his many gifts because he is not perfect in your dreams. He represents his Father, Whom you see as offering both life and death to you.

Brother, He gives but life. Yet what you see as gifts your brother offers represent the gifts you dream your Father gives to you. Let all your brother’s gifts be seen in light of charity and kindness offered you. And let no pain disturb your dream of deep appreciation for his gifts to you. In our dream state we see a world of differences that separate us into isolated, individual identities. In this dream it seems that our identity can be harmed, loss and sickness are possible and death is inevitable. We do not realize the we are the dreamer of this dream. It seems that the dream happens to us. Not realizing we are the source of the dream, we believe that God makes us suffer and die.

God did not Will this dream for us. He gave His Voice to call to us with Love and kindness to waken from this dream of fear. The Holy Spirit offers us a gentle dream of awakening through forgiveness. If we choose to welcome His dream, He will teach us to recognize the changeless Love beyond the dream of separation.

As we forgive with His help, our focus shifts to seeing the kindness in our brothers, the Love he gives and our unity with every brother. The sad and lonely dream is replaced by a happy dream in which we see the innocence in our brother and remember the Love our Father gave us eternally.

Today we choose to accept the Holy Spirit’s happy dream that will waken us to our Home in Heaven.

From Fear to Fearlessness

In fearlessness and love I spend today.

This day, my Father, would I spend with You, as You have chosen all my days should be. And what I will experience is not of time at all. The joy that comes to me is not of days nor hours, for it comes from Heaven to Your Son. This day will be Your sweet reminder to remember You, Your gracious calling to Your holy Son, the sign Your grace has come to me, and that it is Your Will I be set free today.

We spend this day together, you and I. And all the world joins with us in our song of thankfulness and joy to Him Who gave salvation to us, and Who set us free. We are restored to peace and holiness. There is no room in us for fear today, for we have welcomed love into our hearts. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 310, W-pII.310. See also ACIM Lesson 310 Insights.)

There is nothing to fear because only Love is real. This is the foundation for our release from the hell of belief that separation is real. Separation cannot exist in the oneness of Love. The perception of separation — of different bodies, different places, different times — must be illusion. Only our belief makes illusions seem real.

Belief is only the effect of a wish to make a will different from our Creator’s. Yet our true Will is the same as His Will. Our return to Love comes simply by accepting our true Will, the Will we share with God. This acceptance brings with it the remembrance of our safety in the changelessness of Love. God’s Will and ours is to be in perfect peace, joyfully extending Love without limit.

We ask the Holy Spirit to remind us throughout the day that no matter what we perceive, only Love is real. Thus will we move from fear to fearlessness. We will remember we are Love and nothing else.

Healing Our Mistaken Beliefs

No form of sacrifice and suffering can long endure before the face of one who has forgiven and has blessed himself.

The lilies [of forgiveness] that your brother offers you are laid upon your altar, with the ones you offer him beside them. …The blessedness you will behold will take away all thought of form, and leave instead the perfect gift [of Love] forever there, forever to increase, forever yours, forever given away.

Now are we one in [the Thought of Love], for fear has gone. And here, before the altar to one God, one Father, one Creator and one Thought, we stand together as one Son of God. Not separate from Him Who is our Source; not distant from one brother who is part of our one Self Whose innocence has joined us all as one, we stand in blessedness, and give as we receive. The Name of God is on our lips. And as we look within, we see the purity of Heaven shine in our reflection of our Father’s Love.

Now are we blessed, and now we bless the world. [The Love] we have looked upon we would extend, for we would see it every­where. We would behold it shining with the grace of God in everyone. We would not have it be withheld from anything we look upon. And to ensure this holy sight is ours, we offer it to everything we see. The world we see is a place of sacrifice and loss. To have the illusion of specialness we must sacrifice the Reality of Love’s oneness. We lose awareness of Love’s innocence and oneness. Yet Love remains our Reality, unchanged by our denial of It.

Only the mistaken belief in separation makes us unaware of the eternal Love in our mind that maintains our unity with our Creator. Beliefs can be changed. They are easily dismissed when they are recognized as mistaken.

We have been given the Holy Spirit to guide us to the Truth that heals our false beliefs. By choosing His perception of Love instead of the ego’s perception of separation, we forgive. We let go of mistaken beliefs and overlook the illusions they made to the Truth of our wholeness in the Heart of God.

Today we practice holding our mind open to the Holy Spirit’s vision to heal our mistaken perceptions.
