Accepting No Substitutes for God’s Love

Let me remember love is happiness, and nothing else
brings joy. And so I choose to entertain no substitutes
for love.

Love is my heritage, and with it joy. These are the
gifts my Father gave to me. I would accept all that is
mine in truth.

Today I will accept God’s peace and joy, in glad
exchange for all the substitutes that I have made
for happiness and peace.

Let my own feeble voice be still, and let me hear the
mighty Voice for Truth Itself assure me that I am
God’s perfect Son. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 117,W-pI.117,118)

The ego is the idea that it is possible to make an alternative reality in place of the Reality of God’s Love. But the most it can do is make up empty images that have no meaning nor value of their own. Then it makes up stories to give these images some kind of value and meaning that we think we want. It is a grand deception that leaves us feeling dissatisfied and needing to keep searching to find meaning. But under the ego’s guidance we always search in illusions where meaning and value cannot be found.

The Holy Spirit in our minds will guide us to seek where value and meaning can be found — in the truth of God’s changeless Love. We accept His gifts of happiness and peace by letting go of giving meaning to the illusions of the ego world. This is forgiveness.

Today we choose to accept God’s gifts of Love, peace and joy by letting the Holy Spirit help us recognize the emptiness of the ego’s substitutes.

The Key to Release from Hell

I am the holy Son of God Himself.

Here is your declaration of release from bondage of the world. And here as well is all the world released. You do not see what you have done by giving to the world the role of jailer to the Son of God.

Yet what is it except a game you play in which Identity can be denied? You are as God created you. All else but this one thing is folly to believe. In this one thought is everyone set free. In this one truth are all illusions gone. In this one fact is sinlessness proclaimed to be forever part of everything, the central core of its existence and its guarantee of immortality.

Be glad today how very easily is hell undone. You need but tell yourself:

I am the holy Son of God Himself. I cannot suffer,
cannot be in pain; I cannot suffer loss, nor fail to do
all that salvation asks.

And in that thought is everything you look on wholly changed.

You are the holy Son of God Himself. Remember this, and all the world is free. Remember this, and earth and Heaven are one. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 191,W-pI.191.1:1-3;4;7;11:6-8. See also ACIM Lesson 191 Insights.)

The ego is dedicated to littleness, being the denial of our oneness with the magnitude of God. The only way to make this dedication seem real is to imprison our mind in a belief system of vulnerability, weakness and death. It is only our belief in it that gives it seeming reality.

This is why affirming that we are the Son of God Himself is the key to breaking free from the false belief in littleness and separation from God. What we believe, our state of mind, is reflected in all we perceive. Change what we believe and what is reflected back to us changes.

We have the key in our hand right now to free ourselves from hell and accept that we remain as God created us. We are His Son eternally. As we set ourselves free, the world we see is set free.

The Blessing of Accepting God’s Will as Ours

The miracle is much like the body in that both are learning aids for facilitating a state in which they become unnecessary. When spirit’s original state of direct communication is reached, neither the body nor the miracle serves any purpose.

Whatever is true is eternal, and cannot change or be changed. Spirit is therefore unalterable because it is already perfect, but the mind can elect what it chooses to serve. The only limit put on its choice is that it cannot serve two masters. If it elects to do so, the mind can become the medium by which spirit creates along the line of its own creation. If it does not freely elect to do so, it retains its creative potential but places itself under tyrannous rather than Authoritative control. As a result it imprisons, because such are the dictates of tyrants. To change your mind means to place it at the disposal of true Authority.

The miracle is a sign that the mind has chosen to be led by me in Christ’s service. The abundance of Christ is the natural result of choosing to follow Him. (A Course in Miracles, T-1.V.1:1-2;5:1-6:2. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Because God is the Source of Authority for all His Creation, the Sonship is under the Authority of God. This is the same as saying the Will of God and the Will of the Sonship are one and the same. Our true Will is to extend the changeless, eternal Love of God equally to all without limitation of any kind. As we accept our true Will, we experience the indescribable joy of free-flowing Love.

Tyranny is cruel and oppressive rule without legal authority. If we choose the tyranny of the ego thought system of separation, limitation and lack, we are accepting a “leader” that is in violation of the Law of God: Only changeless Love is real. Yet we never lose the fact that we are Love and remain united with our Creator. We can change our mind and accept our true Will, which is one with God’s Will.

The miracle occurs when we choose to be led by the Holy Spirit. He uses the body as a learning aid to teach us that we do not want the ego’s rule. We really want to remember that we are Love and nothing else. We really want to join with the Love in all our brothers. In this joining we experience the abundance of limitless Love. We are free to extend Love without limit and experience all Its blessing.

God’s Strength Is Ours

There is a light in you which cannot die; whose presence is so holy that the world is sanctified because of you.

The light in you is what the universe longs to behold. All living things are still before you, for they recognize Who walks with you. The light you carry is their own. And thus they see in you their holiness, saluting you as savior and as God. Accept their reverence, for it is due to Holiness Itself, which walks with you, transforming in Its gentle light all things unto Its likeness and Its purity.

“Who walks with me?” This question should be asked a thousand times a day, till certainty has ended doubting and established peace. Today let doubting cease. God speaks for you in answering your question with these words:

I walk with God in perfect holiness. I light the world,
I light my mind and all the minds which God created
one with me.” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 156,W-pI.156.4:1;5;8. See also ACIM Lesson 156 Insights.)

The Source of all fear and guilt is the belief that we are separate from God’s eternal, changeless Love. This belief makes a barrier that hides the Light of Love that is us, leaving us in the darkness. We cannot see the truth in this darkness and so the ego thought system populates it with made up images that seem to be beyond our control. We seem to be vulnerable to events in the world. Yet it is only shadow figures with no substance and no meaning of their own. Only belief makes them seem to have an effect on us.

Beyond the self-made barrier against Love, the Light shines unencumbered and unaffected by this made up barrier. We are the Light, God’s Creation. This Light is with us always, no matter how much we blind ourselves by our beliefs. We walk with God; it is impossible to be without Him. The more we remind ourselves of this truth, the safer and more peaceful we will feel. We remember that all of God’s strength is ours. His changelessness is ours. His Love surrounds us and protects us always, now and forever. And we give thanks.

Remembering God’s Love

The Holy Spirit takes you gently by the hand, and retraces with you your mad journey outside yourself, leading you gently back to the truth and safety within. He brings all your insane projections and the wild substitutions that you have placed outside you to the truth. Thus He reverses the course of insanity and restores you to reason.

In your relationship with your brother, where [the Holy Spirit] has taken charge of everything at your request, He has set the course inward to the truth you share. In the mad world outside you nothing can be shared but only substituted, and sharing and substituting have nothing in common in reality. Within yourself you love your brother with a perfect love. Here is holy ground, in which no substitution can enter, and where only the truth in your brother can abide. Here you are joined in God, as much together as you are with Him. The original error has not entered here, nor ever will. Here is the radiant truth, to which the Holy Spirit has committed your relationship. Let Him bring it here, where you would have it be. Give Him but a little faith in your brother, to help Him show you that no substitute you made for Heaven can keep you from it.

In you there is no separation, and no substitute can keep you from your brother. Your reality was God’s creation, and has no substitute. You are so firmly joined in truth that only God is there. And He would never accept something else instead of you. He loves you both, equally and as one. And as He loves you, so you are. You are not joined together in illusions, but in the Thought so holy and so perfect that illusions cannot remain to darken the holy place in which you stand together. God is with you, my brother. Let us join in Him in peace and gratitude, and accept His gift as our most holy and perfect reality, which we share in Him. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.I.7:3-10:9. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

We all stand together as one in the holiness of God. His holiness created us as holy as Himself. The appearance of billions of bodies with separate identities is just a fragmented projection of the mad idea that it is possible to be separate from our Creator. The truth that unites us all as one is the Love of God, given equally to all.

When we are willing to put the Holy Spirit in charge of all our relationships, He will teach us to see past the fragmented images to the one Love that is in all everywhere. It is this vision that will awaken us from the dream, leading us to the real world where all is forgiven. No thought of judgment enters here, for the innocence of Love is seen as all that is real. From this place of total acceptance of the truth, we awaken to the Heaven of God’s Love we never left in truth.

Today we choose to put the Holy Spirit in charge of all our relationships.

Our Resurrection Is the Remembrance of Love

Very simply, the resurrection is the overcoming or surmounting of death. It is a reawakening or a rebirth; a change of mind about the meaning of the world. It is the acceptance of the Holy Spirit’s interpretation of the world’s purpose; the acceptance of the Atonement for oneself. It is the end of dreams of misery, and the glad awareness of the Holy Spirit’s final dream. …[The resurrection] is the invitation to God to take His final step. It is the relinquishment of all other purposes, all other interests, all other wishes and all other concerns. It is the single desire of the Son for the Father.

Now there are no distinctions. Differences have disappeared and Love looks on Itself. What further sight is needed? What remains that vision could accomplish? We have seen the face of Christ, His sinlessness, His Love behind all forms, beyond all purposes. Holy are we because His Holiness has set us free indeed! And we accept His Holiness as ours; as it is. As God created us so will we be forever and forever, and we wish for nothing but His Will to be our own. Illusions of another will are lost, for unity of purpose has been found.

These things await us all, but we are not prepared as yet to welcome them with joy. As long as any mind remains possessed of evil dreams [of separation], the thought of hell is real. God’s teachers have the goal of wakening the minds of those asleep, and seeing there the vision of Christ’s face to take the place of what they dream. The thought of murder [separation] is replaced with blessing. Judgment is laid by, and given Him [the Holy Spirit] Whose function judgment is. And in His Final Judgment is restored the truth about the holy Son of God. (A Course in Miracles, M-28.1;5:1-6:6)

What is the final dream that leads us to awaken to the truth that we remain Love as God created us? It is the dream of complete forgiveness. It is when we relinquish all our judgments to the Holy Spirit and accept His judgment in their place.

His judgment is simple: Only Love is Real; God’s Son is Love and nothing else. The acceptance of Holy Spirit’s judgment in place of our own resurrects us from the dream of separation and death. It returns us to awareness of the Life we live in God.

Today we welcome the Holy Spirit’s judgment in place of our own.

Complete Forgiveness

Perhaps it is not yet quite clear to you that each decision that you make is one between a grievance and a miracle. Each grievance stands like a dark shield of hate before the miracle it would conceal. And as you raise it up before your eyes, you will not see the miracle beyond. Yet all the while it waits for you in light, but you behold your grievances instead.

Then let us ask of Him Who knows this Son of God in his reality and truth, that we may look on him a different way, and see our savior shining in the light of true forgiveness, given unto us. We ask Him in the holy Name of God and of His Son, as holy as Himself:

Let me behold my savior in this one You have appointed as the one for me to ask to lead me to the holy light in which he stands, that I may join with him.

The body’s eyes are closed, and as you think of him who grieved you, let your mind be shown the light in him beyond your grievances.” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 78,W-pI.78.1;7. See also ACIM Lesson 78 Insights.)

The body’s eyes cannot see the Light of the Son of God in our brothers. The Light of God’s Son is seen in the Mind we share with God. It is through the Holy Spirit in our mind that we are shown the truth in our brothers and ourselves.

The Holy Spirit teaches us that the images of the world are meaningless, have no value and can do no harm. Forgiveness is accomplished as we lay aside the images of the world because we have learned the images do nothing.

As we withdraw the value we have placed on the world’s images, our grievances fade away and we see the Light of God’s Son. As this Light shines upon us, we realize It is our own as well. There is only one Light. The adversary we thought stood before us is now recognized as our one Self, united in Love. Forgiveness is complete.
