The Foundation of Forgiveness

The sight of innocence makes punishment impossible, and justice sure. The Holy Spirit’s perception leaves no ground for an attack. Only a loss could justify attack, and loss of any kind He cannot see. …for only justice can set up a state in which there is no loser; no one left unfairly treated and deprived, and thus with grounds for vengeance.

The Holy Spirit’s problem solving is the way in which the problem ends. It has been solved because it has been met with justice. Until it has it will recur, because it has not yet been solved. The principle that justice means no one can lose is crucial to this course. For miracles [change of mind] depend on justice. Not as it is seen through this world’s eyes, but as God knows it and as knowledge is reflected in the sight the Holy Spirit gives.

No one deserves to lose. And what would be unjust to [a brother] cannot occur. Healing must be for everyone….

ACIM lesson 133 has us affirm, “I will not value what is valueless.” This is a key to forgiveness. The only meaningful value is Love because nothing else is real [thus valueless]. The ego cannot show us justification for forgiveness because it denies Love.

Yet we can be just to our brothers only by giving no value to the form he seems to take and treasuring only the Love he Is. The innocence of his Love sees no call for vengeance or punishment. It seeks to join with all in Love’s oneness. As this is accepted, it becomes clear that nothing happened to change our brother’s reality. He is only Love, united with us in the one Self Love created. Being created by Love, we remain one with God. Nothing but His Love exists.

Finding the Love We Seek

Heaven waits silently, and your creations [extensions of love] are holding out their hands to help you cross and welcome them. For it is they you seek. You seek but for your own completion, and it is they who render you complete. The special love relationship is but a shabby substitute for what makes you whole in truth, not in illusion. Your relationship with them is without guilt, and this enables you to look on all your brothers with gratitude, because your creations were created in union with them. Acceptance of your creations is the acceptance of the Oneness of creation, without which you could never be complete. No specialness can offer you what God has given, and what you are joined with Him in giving.

Across the bridge [from separation to oneness] is your completion, for you will be wholly in God, willing for nothing special, but only to be wholly like to Him, completing Him by your completion. Fear not to cross to the abode of peace and perfect holiness. Only there is the completion of God and of His Son established forever. Seek not for [completion] in the bleak world of illusion, where nothing is certain and where everything fails to satisfy. In the Name of God, be wholly willing to abandon all illusions. In any relationship in which you are wholly willing to accept completion [in the oneness of Love], and only this, there is God completed, and His Son with Him. (A Course in Miracles, T-16.IV.8-9. It is important to remember that only Love creates, and only like Itself. Our Self, the Son of God, was created by Love as Love, wholly united with Its Source. Love is all there Is because only Love is real.

Love continuously extends Itself. If the extension of Love is interrupted, Love is not complete. The world of separation makes it appear that Love can be given or not, parceled out in different amounts or forms in different situations. This makes a barrier that blinds us to the eternal presence of Love’s continuous extension.

While we engage in the illusion of separation, we feel incomplete. Everyone here is searching for Love, unaware that the Love they seek is What they are. Here we are being taught that we cannot find completion in any form in the world.

The place to find Love is within. We become aware of It by accepting the Holy Spirit’s help with His vision to see past all form to the eternal flow of Love. As we accept His help, the appearance of forms and what they seem to do fades in importance. We give priority to seeing beyond them to the Light of Love in which we are complete, united with our brothers in God’s Love.

Remembering the Self God Created

Forgiveness is the healing of the perception of separation. Correct perception of your brother is necessary, because minds have chosen to see themselves as separate. Spirit knows God completely. That is its miraculous power. The fact that each one has this power completely is a condition entirely alien to the world’s thinking. The world believes that if anyone has everything, there is nothing left. But God’s miracles are as total as His Thoughts because they are His Thoughts.

As long as perception lasts prayer has a place. Since perception rests on lack, those who perceive have not totally accepted the Atonement and given themselves over to truth. Perception is based on a separated state, so that anyone who perceives at all needs healing. Communion, not prayer, is the natural state of those who know. God and His miracle are inseparable. How beautiful indeed are the Thoughts of God who live in His light! Your worth is beyond perception because it is beyond doubt. Do not perceive yourself in different lights. Know yourself in the One Light where the miracle that is you is perfectly clear. (A Course in Miracles, T-3.V.9-10. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Our minds are constantly preoccupied with evaluating, categorizing and labeling everything that we look upon or even think about. This process is a necessary part of maintaining the seeming reality of separation. In the oneness of God’s Love, there are no differences to evaluate or categorize. In the oneness of Love, there is nothing but Love. Love is known in all Its oneness or not at all. In separation, we search for differences in order to perceive identities.

To return to the knowledge of the unchangeable, unlimited, eternal Love we are, we need to forgive the belief in separation. So the only meaningful prayer is to receive the vision of Christ, which sees past separation to the innocence of Love’s oneness.

Today we pray to see our brothers truly as the Love they are. This is a prayer to remember the Self we were created to be. It is a prayer to remember our unity with our Creator.

Living a Sacred Life

Into His Presence would I enter now.

This is a day of silence and of trust. It is a special time of promise in your calendar of days. It is a time Heaven has set apart to shine upon, and cast a timeless light upon this day, when echoes of eternity are heard.

Today it will be given you to feel a touch of Heaven, though you will return to paths of learning. Yet you have come far enough along the way to alter time sufficiently to rise above its laws, and walk into eternity a while. This you will learn to do increasingly, as every lesson, faithfully rehearsed, brings you more swiftly to this holy place and leaves you, for a moment, to your Self.

He will direct your practicing today, for what you ask for now is what He wills. And having joined your will with His this day, what you are asking must be given you. Nothing is needed but today’s idea [Into His Presence would I enter now] to light your mind, and let it rest in still anticipation and in quiet joy, wherein you quickly leave the world behind. For most of us, our minds are filled with chatter throughout the day. Thoughts about the world, things to do, things to say or not say, hide the Presence of peace that is always in us. But we can set aside this day to practice welcoming silence in our mind. We can trust that our welcome opens our minds to the fact that we are in the Presence of Love, our true Self, now. We need not wait. But we do need to be willing to step back from the busy-ness of the world and connect with the Source of peace within.

It is this connection that makes the present moment sacred because it is the connection with the holy Son of God we are. The experience of this connection is beyond words. But it brings with it a clearer vision that helps us look beyond the world’s images to see that we are all one, wholly immersed in Love’s oneness.

As we bring this vision with us, we help bring forgiveness to the world. For this clear vision shows us that nothing has happened to change our true Self, God’s one Son. We remain eternally innocent, harmless and wholly loving.

Seeing Beyond the Masks with Christ’s Vision

The Holy Spirit reaches from the Christ in you to all your dreams, and bids them come to Him, to be translated into truth. He will exchange them for the final dream which God appointed as the end of dreams. For when forgiveness rests upon the world and peace has come to every Son of God, what could there be to keep things separate, for what remains to see except Christ’s face?

And how long will this holy face be seen, when it is but the symbol that the time for learning now is over, and the goal of the Atonement has been reached at last? So therefore let us seek to find Christ’s face and look on nothing else. As we behold His glory, will we know we have no need of learning or perception or of time, or anything except the holy Self, the Christ Whom God created as His Son. A body is the ego’s mask to hide the face of Christ. The more we recognize that the mask is nothing more than a false persona and let ourselves see beyond it to the face of Christ, the greater will be our peace and our joy. As we identify with the face of Christ instead of the mask, we see that same face in every brother. The mask our brother seems to wear and our own diminish. They remain in our awareness, but their appearance interferes less with the vision of Love that shows us our brother at one with us, innocent and a holy extension of God’s Love.

Today let us practice overlooking the mask and welcoming Holy Spirit’s help to see with Christ’s vision.

Experiencing Greater Peace

In silence, close your eyes upon the world that does not under­stand forgiveness, and seek sanctuary in the quiet place where thoughts are changed and false beliefs laid by. Repeat today’s idea, and ask for help in understanding what it really means. Be willing to be taught. Be glad to hear the Voice of truth and heal­ing speak to you, and you will understand the words He speaks, and recognize He speaks your words to you.

As often as you can, remind yourself you have a goal today; an aim which makes this day of special value to yourself and all your brothers. Do not let your mind forget this goal for long, but tell yourself:

All that I give is given to myself. The Help I need to learn that this is true is with me now. And I will trust in Him.

Then spend a quiet moment, opening your mind to His correction and His Love. And what you hear of Him you will believe, for what He gives will be received by you. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 126, W-pI.126.10-11. See also ACIM Lesson 126 Insights.)

Everyone in this world seeks peace in some way. Peace is found in our true Self, which is always with us. Each time we practice stepping back from our perceptions of the world and welcoming the peace that is in us, we give a gift to the world, including ourselves. To accept the peace we seek, we must offer it.

We dedicate today to receiving Holy Spirit’s perception within the peace in our minds. His perception will always lead us to true forgiveness. And our peace will be magnified again and again.

Remembering the Light of Love Within

Listen, and see if you remember an ancient song you knew so long ago and held more dear than any melody you taught yourself to cherish since.

Beyond the body, beyond the sun and stars, past everything you see and yet somehow familiar, is an arc of golden light that stretches as you look into a great and shining circle. And all the circle fills with light before your eyes. The edges of the circle disappear, and what is in it is no longer contained at all. The light expands and covers everything, extending to infinity forever shining and with no break or limit anywhere. Within it everything is joined in perfect continuity. Nor is it possible to imagine that anything could be outside, for there is nowhere that this light is not.

This is the vision of the Son of God, whom you know well. Here is the sight of him who knows his Father. Here is the memory of what you are; a part of this, with all of it within, and joined to all as surely as all is joined in you. Accept the vision that can show you this, and not the body. You know the ancient song, and know it well. Nothing will ever be as dear to you as is this ancient hymn of love the Son of God sings to his Father still. (A Course in Miracles, T-21.I.7:5-9:6. To know our Self, we are called to accept the vision of the Son of God. It is our true vision. What we have called seeing with the body’s eyes is actually hallucinating, The body itself is an illusion and can perceive only illusions. The choice to accept what the body’s eyes show us is to choose blindness as our reality. It makes us blind to the truth of our unity with All That is — the Love of God.

Today let us join together in the practice of asking the Holy Spirit’s help to receive the vision of God’s Son. We want to know and accept our Self. Our heart’s sole desire is to be the Love That it is.
