The Holy Spirit’s Lessons in Forgiveness

The light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness. My forgiveness is the means by which the light of the world finds expression through me. My forgiveness is the means by which I become aware of the light of the world in me. My forgiveness is the means by which the world is healed, together with myself. Let me, then, forgive the world, that it may be healed along with me.

Let peace extend from my mind to yours, [name].
I share the light of the world with you, [name].

The Holy Spirit knows that the body and everything we experience or perceive in the world through the body are not real. He knows that we remain Love as Love created us and this can never change. This recognition is the foundation of true forgiveness. If what appears to happen in the world is unreal and cannot affect us in any way, then there is really nothing to forgive. This is the lesson He must teach to the part of our mind that is dedicated to believing separation is real.

As we practice asking the Holy Spirit’s help to forgive the things that offend, anger and bring fear and guilt to our minds, He will patiently and gently teach us to see that these things could never be true. With His kind lessons we will learn to overlook our grievances because we will realize that their seeming justification never really happened. This is how we learn to free ourselves from the bondage of fear and guilt. This is how we save the world and ourselves. We remember our Self as God’s one Son.

Lifting the Veil to See Only Innocence

Those who would see the witnesses to truth instead of to illusion merely ask that they might see a purpose in the world that gives it sense and makes it meaningful. Without your special function has this world no meaning for you. Yet it can become a treasure house as rich and limitless as Heaven itself. No instant passes here in which your brother’s holiness cannot be seen, to add a limitless supply to every meager scrap and tiny crumb of happiness that you allot yourself.

You can lose sight of oneness, but can not make sacrifice of its reality. Nor can you lose what you would sacrifice, nor keep the Holy Spirit from His task of showing you that it has not been lost. Hear, then, the song your brother sings to you, and let the world recede, and take the rest his witness offers on behalf of peace. But judge him not, for you will hear no song of liberation for yourself….

[Your brother’s] holiness gives life to you, who cannot die because his sinlessness is known to God; and can no more be sacrificed by you than can the light in you be blotted out because he sees it not. …In Heaven, God’s Son is not imprisoned in a body, nor is sacrificed in solitude to sin. To see our brother truly we must not project our guilt upon him. The projection of guilt draws a veil across the Light of innocence in our brothers. The veil appears to show us guilt in our brothers, but is really reflected back to us the guilt we perceive in ourselves. Thus forgiveness is the key to recognizing our true Self in our brothers and ourselves.

The practice of forgiveness is our special function which will free the world we see of the veil of guilt and fear. As the veil dissolves, the Light of innocence in our brothers shines back on us and reminds us of the Love we share. We remember our Self as It was created and as It remains in truth.

Today we dedicate to remaining open to Holy Spirit’s lessons in forgiveness, that we may see the Light of Love more clearly and remember Who we are.

We Can Awaken from the Dream

My Father knows my holiness. Shall I deny His knowledge, and believe in what His knowledge makes impossible? Shall I accept as true what He proclaims as false? Or shall I take His Word for what I am, since He is my Creator, and the One Who knows the true condition of His Son?

Father, I was mistaken in myself, because I failed to realize the Source from which I came. I have not left that Source to enter in a body and to die. My holiness remains a part of me, as I am part of You. And my mistakes about myself are dreams. I let them go today. And I stand ready to receive Your Word alone for what I really am. When we look at the things that seem to happen in the world, the things we do and thoughts we have, it doesn’t seem that we are holy at all. Yet we are told that God knows us as holy. This is because the body we have identified with and the world it seems to populate is just a dream. It is a false persona acting out its beliefs in being separate, vulnerable and alone.

It’s good news that this is only a dream and we can wake up from a dream. From within the dream there seems to be no end to it. But we have help from beyond the dream to gently and lovingly lead us out of it to awaken to the Love and holiness we have always been in truth. We do not need to dwell in a place of fear and guilt any longer.

Today we call upon the strength of God in us to help us remember Who we really are. And we trust that we will receive the Help we need.

Letting Christ’s Vision Show Us Innocence

Behold the great projection, but look on it with the decision that it must be healed, and not with fear. Nothing you made has any power over you unless you still would be apart from your Creator, and with a will opposed to His. For only if you would believe His Son could be His enemy does it seem possible that what you made is [your enemy]. You would condemn God’s joy to misery, and make Him different. And all the misery you made has been your own. Are you not glad to learn it is not true? Is it not welcome news to hear not one of the illusions that you made replaced the truth?

All you need do to dwell in quiet here with Christ is share His vision. Quickly and gladly is His vision given anyone who is but willing to see his brother sinless. And no one can remain beyond this willingness, if you would be released entirely from all effects of sin. Would you have partial forgiveness for yourself? Can you reach Heaven while a single sin still tempts you to remain in misery? Heaven is the home of perfect purity, and God created it for you. Look on your holy brother, sinless as yourself, and let him lead you there. (A Course in Miracles, T-22.II.10,13. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

All power comes from our unity with God. We, God’s Son, are His extension, which can never be separate from Him. To know God’s power, we must accept It as our own without reservation. That means we must accept the unity of Love, which excludes no one.

The ego thought of separation is the rejection of our unity with God and therefore the rejection of God’s power. Consequently the ego has no power of its own. The only power the ego seems to have is the power we give it by our belief that separation is real. It is this misdirected belief that must be healed.

Forgiveness is the means for this healing. As we learn to open our hearts and minds to the vision of Christ, we see past the false images made by the belief in separation. Christ’s vision shows us the innocence in our brothers. As we recognize their innocence, we recognize our own.

Today we quietly welcome Christ’s vision that we may see every brother as the savior he is. Seen truly, every brother will show us that only Love is real. The shadows of the ego fade away in the brilliance of the Light of Love.

The Benefits of Accepting God’s Peace

Now do your eyes belong to Christ, and He looks through them. Now your voice belongs to God and echoes His. And now your heart remains at peace forever. You have chosen Him in place of idols, and your attributes, given by your Creator, are restored to you at last. The Call for God is heard and answered. Now has fear made way for love, as God Himself replaces cruelty.

Father, we are like You. No cruelty abides in us, for there is none in You. Your peace is ours. And we bless the world with what we have received from You alone. We choose again, and make our choice for all our brothers, knowing they are one with us. We bring them Your salvation as we have received it now. And we give thanks for them who render us complete. In them we see Your glory, and in them we find our peace. Holy are we because Your Holiness has set us free. And we give thanks. Amen. (. See also ACIM Lesson 170 Insights.W-pI.170.12-13. As we consistently practice opening our hearts and minds to God’s peace, we find that our eyes do belong to Christ. We find that we are able to see the innocence behind the ego’s images of separation from Love. We clearly see the value in dwelling in Love’s oneness, Love’s peace. We are able to see past the ego’s false perceptions to the constant state of Love that we are in eternally.

We give thanks that we have the means to remember the truth. We give thanks that nothing has changed God’s one Son. We give thanks that we all are still as God created us. We are safe. We are innocent. We are loved. We are Home.

The Way Home to Love

The Holy Spirit does not teach you to judge others, because He does not want you to teach error and learn it yourself. He would hardly be consistent if He allowed you to strengthen what you must learn to avoid. In the mind of the thinker, then, He is judgmental, but only in order to unify the mind so it can perceive without judgment. This enables the mind to teach without judgment, and therefore to learn to be without judgment. The undoing is necessary only in your mind, so that you will not project, instead of extend [Love]. God Himself has established what you can extend with perfect safety. Therefore, the Holy Spirit’s third lesson is:

Be vigilant only for God and His Kingdom.

Choosing through the Holy Spirit will lead you to the Kingdom. You create by your true being, but what you are you must learn to remember. …If you allow yourself to have in your mind only what God put there, you are acknowledging your mind as God created it. Therefore, you are accepting [your mind] as it is. Since [your mind] is whole, you are teaching peace because you believe in [peace]. (A Course in Miracles, T-6.V.C.2;5:1–2,4-6. The ego’s judgments are always based on the false belief in separation. Therefore all its judgments are wrong. That is why we need to let the Holy Spirit judge everything on our behalf.

The Holy Spirit’s judgment is very simple — it’s either true or false, real or unreal. As we let the Holy Spirit judge on our behalf, we will learn to sort the false from the true. We will learn to see past the false appearances of the ego’s world to the Light of Love that is everywhere. We will learn the truth of what Love created us to be.

Whenever we are feeling less than peaceful and joyful, we are accepting the ego’s judgment. As we practice turning over these thoughts with willingness to let the Holy Spirit sort the truth from the false for us, we become more and more aware of the Self we are. The seemingly endless stream of conflict and chaos is replaced by increasing happiness and peace of mind. It is worth the vigilance of bringing all our thoughts to the Holy Spirit for His purification to filter out the false from the true. It is the way Home.

Clearing the Way to True Happiness

Now we would see and hear and learn. “What is salvation, Father?” Ask and you will be answered. Seek and you will find. We are no longer asking the ego what salvation is and where to find it. We are asking it of truth. Be certain, then, that the answer will be true because of Whom you ask.

Whenever you feel your confidence wane and your hope of success flicker and go out, repeat your question and your request, remembering that you are asking of the infinite Creator of infinity, Who created you like Himself:

What is salvation, Father? I do not know.
Tell me, that I may understand.

He will answer. Be determined to hear. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 72, W-pI.72.11-12. See also ACIM Lesson 72 Insights.)

When we look for situations, relationships or any form in the world to make us happy or to feel valued, we are seeking salvation from the ego, where it cannot be found. The Course tells us that since God is Love, He is also happiness.

Choosing the ego as our guide to happiness is actually choosing against happiness. The ego does not know what true happiness is and will always lead us on fruitless chases for a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Sooner or later we all come to a point of realizing there must be a better way.

To ask the Source of happiness to learn what happiness is, is to ask where the answer is. The core of His answer will always be Love. While we believe we are in the world, His answer will always be in a form that we can understand. It is always some form of forgiveness. Forgiveness draws aside the veil of guilt and fear so that we can see the Light of Love that is ever present.

We have long been accustomed to seeking where happiness cannot be found. It is time to build a new habit of turning to our Source for the answers that clear the way to true happiness. Today is a good day to start.
