Forgiveness Is Our Purpose Here

The real world is the state of mind in which the only purpose of the world is seen to be forgiveness. Fear is not its goal, for the escape from guilt becomes its aim. The value of forgiveness is perceived and takes the place of idols, which are sought no longer, for their ‘gifts’ are not held dear. No rules are idly set, and no demands are made of anyone or anything to twist and fit into the dream of fear. Instead, there is a wish to understand all things created as they really are.

…The folly of pursuing guilt as goal is fully recognized. And idols are not wanted [in a world with forgiveness as its purpose], for guilt is understood as the sole cause of pain in any form. (A Course in Miracles, T-30.V.1:1-5;2:3-4. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Today we remember that forgiveness is our only purpose here. We do not try to find guilt in ourselves in another. We understand that guilt in any form is the cause of our suffering. We would free ourselves from the pain of guilt and judgment. Seeing innocence, with Holy Spirit’s Help, is our practice for today.

We Are at Peace Forever in the Heart of God

…this [is God’s] Judgment of the Son of God:

Holy are you, eternal, free and whole, at peace forever in the Heart of God. Where is the world, and where is sorrow now?

Is this your judgment on yourself, teacher of God? Do you believe that this is wholly true? No; not yet, not yet. But this is still your goal; why you are here. It is your function to prepare yourself to hear this Judgment and to recognize that it is true. One instant of complete belief in this, and you will go beyond belief to Certainty. One instant out of time can bring time’s end. Judge not, for you but judge yourself, and thus delay this Final Judgment. What is your judgment of the world, teacher of God? Have you yet learned to stand aside and hear the Voice of Judgment in yourself? Or do you still attempt to take His role from Him? Learn to be quiet, for His Voice is heard in stillness. And His Judgment comes to all who stand aside in quiet listening, and wait for Him. A Course in Miracles, (M-15.1:10-12;2)

Here we find that our purpose in the world is to realize we are holy and free, and at peace forever in the Heart of God. Remembering this is our purpose for being here. There is no other meaningful purpose. With our busy lives it seems there are many other purposes which seem very important to us.

The key to following our true purpose is to build the habit of stepping aside to hear the Voice for God remind us again what our true purpose is. We are here to wake up from the dream of separation. We are here to let go of deciding what anything means on our own. We are here to hear His Voice tell us of our innocence and that we are still the eternal Spirit of Love we were created to be.

Our willingness to let this truth in to our awareness seems to be a gradual process. We don’t realize our fear of seeing the Son of God’s innocence. If everyone in this world is truly innocent, we would have to recognize once and for all that nothing has happened to change God’s one Son. We have done nothing, and the world of separation has never happened in truth. This is our opportunity today and every day — to realize that we are at peace forever in the Heart of God.

Remembering the Peace That Is Our Natural State

It would indeed be strange if you were asked to go beyond all symbols of the world, forgetting them forever; yet were asked to take a teaching function. You have need to use the symbols of the world a while. But be you not deceived by them as well. They do not stand for anything at all, and in your practicing it is this thought that will release you from them. They become but means by which you can communicate in ways the world can understand, but which you recognize is not the unity where true communication can be found.

Thus what you need are intervals each day in which the learning of the world becomes a transitory phase; a prison house from which you go into the sunlight and forget the darkness. Here you understand the Word, the Name which God has given you; the one Identity which all things share; the one acknowledgment of what is true. And then step back to darkness, not because you think it real, but only to proclaim its unreality in terms which still have meaning in the world that darkness rules. This section is reminding us how important it is to step back daily from all the busy doings of the world. If we want to be truly helpful, we will give time to moving past the clouds of separation to the unity of God’s Love and peace and happiness we all truly are. We give time to remembering we are still as God created us. God is but Love, and therefore the whole Sonship is only Love.

We give time to breathe the pure air of Love’s oneness… We give time to remember only Love is real… We take time to rise above the busy doings of the world to remember the peace that is our natural state…

Seeing the Loveliness of Love

How lovely is the world whose purpose is forgiveness of God’s Son! How free from fear, how filled with blessing and with happiness! (A Course in Miracles, T-29.VI.6:1-2. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

All our unhappiness is the effect of judgment. Judgment separates us from what we judge. But our natural state is at one with all that is real. We are all one in Love. Whenever we judge, and thus separate, we are attacking our Self. This can only be perceived as harm, so it brings guilt with it.

Guilt and happiness cannot coexist. That is why the focus on forgiveness is the antidote for guilt and fear, clearing the way to experience God’s gift of perfect happiness. When we forgive a brother, we open the door to joining with the Love he is and heal ourselves. We free ourselves to see the loveliness of Love that surrounds us eternally.

God’s Plan Brings Us Happiness

The ego’s plan for salvation centers around holding grievances.

Holding grievances is the opposite of God’s plan
for salvation. And only His plan will work.

Ask Him very specifically:

What would You have me do?
Where would You have me go?
What would You have me say, and to whom?

Give Him full charge of the rest of the practice period, and let Him tell you what needs to be done by you in His plan for your salvation. He will answer in proportion to your willingness to hear His Voice. Refuse not to hear. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 71, W-pI.71.2:1;10:3-4;9:2-8. See also ACIM Lesson 71 Insights.)

Since God’s Will for us is perfect happiness, His plan for our salvation must bring happiness. Learning that the ego’s plan is the opposite of God’s plan, the ego’s plan must lead to sadness and depression. Holding the ego’s focus on grievances guarantees at the very least, a level of sadness and ultimately a deep level of depression, no matter how well we try to hide it. The depression comes from the fact that the ego’s plan for our salvation is intended not to work, in keeping with its doctrine, “Seek and do not find.”

As we ask God’s guidance for what to do, where to go, what to say and to whom, we are lovingly and gently led to let go of our grievances. God’s guidance will always lead us to see past the false images of the world to the Love in our brothers and to extend God’s Love to all. This is how we find happiness. This is how we remember that we remain Love as Love created us.

God’s Peace Is Ours to Have and Give

If God’s Will for you is complete peace and joy, unless you experience only this you must be refusing to acknowledge His Will. His Will does not vacillate, being changeless forever. When you are not at peace it can only be because you do not believe you are in Him. Yet He is All in all. His peace is complete, and you must be included in it. (A Course in Miracles, T-8.IV.1:1-5. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

It is helpful to remember that if we are not in peace, it simply means we have forgotten that we remain as God created us. We share all of God’s attributes, being the extension of What He is.

When we recognize we are not in peace, we can use the recognition as a reminder to return our attention to the truth within us, the Voice for God. When we are willing to receive Love’s Correction, we will learn to look past the appearances that seem to disturb our peace because we recognize that they are just false ideas, illusions.

The Holy Spirit is our ever-present Guide to peace. As we let ourselves be taught by God’s Voice, we return to the awareness that we are indeed God’s Son, along with all our brothers. We accept God’s peace as ours and give it to all as we let go of the false ideas that have blinded us to the peace we are.

Our Special Role to Heal the World

I have a special place to fill; a role for me alone. Salvation waits until I take this part as what I choose to do. Until I make this choice, I am the slave of time and human destiny. But when I willingly and gladly go the way my Father’s plan appointed me to go, then will I recognize salvation is already here, already given all my brothers and already mine as well.

Father, Your way is what I choose today. Where it would lead me do I choose to go; what it would have me do I choose to do. Your way is certain, and the end secure. The memory of You awaits me there. And all my sorrows end in Your embrace, which You have promised to Your Son, who thought mistakenly that he had wandered from the sure protection of Your loving Arms. In the world everyone seems to be different. We each have our personal set of judgments and perceived guilt through which we look upon the world. We project our guilt through our judgments, which maintains the sense of separation and isolation we all feel in the world.

Thus our individual role that each of us alone must fulfill is to forgive or let go of our personal collection of guilt, grievances and judgments. It is these that hide the fact that we remain perfectly innocent, perfectly whole and perfectly safe eternally within the Love of God.

In every moment we have the opportunity to fulfill our role in God’s plan by letting the Holy Spirit help us see the truth of Love beyond the appearances in the world. Thus do we learn to forgive our grievances, let go of our judgments, and remember that we share God’s innocence with all our brothers. This is our practice for today.
