Accepting Holy Spirit’s Lessons

Beyond all idols is the Thought God holds of you. Completely unaffected by the turmoil and the terror of the world, the dreams of birth and death that here are dreamed, the myriad of forms that fear can take; quite undisturbed, the Thought God holds of you remains exactly as It always was. Surrounded by a stillness so complete no sound of battle comes remotely near, It rests in certainty and perfect peace. Here is your one reality kept safe, completely unaware of all the world that worships idols, and that knows not God. In perfect sureness of Its changelessness and of Its rest in Its eternal home, the Thought God holds of you has never left the Mind of its Creator, Whom it knows as Its Creator knows that It is there.

An idol or the Thought God holds of you is your reality. Forget not, then, that idols must keep hidden what you are, not from the Mind of God, but from your own. The star shines still; the sky has never changed. But you, the holy Son of God Himself, are unaware of your reality.” (A Course in Miracles, T-30.III.10;11:7-10. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

The world we see through the body’s eyes seem so real. Yet the Course is telling us that what we see, along with the body, is just made up images that hide our true Reality from our awareness. This is good news, because the world we see is constantly changing, unreliable and offers us no certain safety.

Though we are unaware of it, God holds us as His Thought eternally in His Mind, safe, changeless and whole. As we are willing to accept the Holy Spirit’s lessons, we will learn to see past the false images of the world, recognizing their meaninglessness. What has no meaning nor substance cannot prevent us from becoming aware of the certainty of our safety in God. The Holy Spirit’s lessons are lessons in Love, peace and perfect happiness. We would accept His lessons today.

Vigilance for God’s Will Brings Healing

There is no substitute for the Will of God. In simple statement, it is to this fact that the teacher of God devotes his day. Each substitute he may accept as real can but deceive him. But he is safe from all deception if he so decides. Perhaps he needs to remember, “God is with me. I cannot be deceived.” Perhaps he prefers other words, or only one, or none at all. Yet each temptation to accept magic as true must be abandoned through his recognition, not that it is fearful, not that it is sinful, not that it is dangerous, but merely that it is meaningless. Rooted in sacrifice and separation, two aspects of one error and no more, he merely chooses to give up all that he never had. And for this “sacrifice” is Heaven restored to his awareness.

“There is no will but God’s.” His teachers know that this is so, and have learned that everything but this is magic. All belief in magic is maintained by just one simple-minded illusion; — that it works. All through his training, every day and every hour, and even every minute and second, must God’s teachers learn to recognize the forms of magic and perceive their meaninglessness. Fear is withdrawn from them, and so they go. And thus the gate of Heaven is reopened, and its light can shine again on an untroubled mind. (A Course in Miracles, M-16.10;11:6-11)

The fact that there is no will but God’s is why only Love is real. Joy and peace are attributes of Love. Thus God’s will for us is perfect happiness and peace that cannot be disturbed.

If we are not experiencing God’s Love and peace and joy, then we have accepted a will that is different from God’s Will. It is a false will that can have no real effect, but our acceptance of it makes it seem that it has an effect. Acceptance of this false will as a substitute for God’s Will is why we experience fear, guilt, pain and loss.

Yet these are only the effect of magic thoughts which come from belief in a will separate from God’s. If we want to be healed and to heal, we must be willing to recognize that the idea of a will separate from God’s is meaningless. Being meaningless, it can have no effect.

We free ourselves to return to the Heaven of God’s Love by being vigilant for these magic thoughts and giving them to the Holy Spirit to be corrected. This is how we learn to see past the false to the eternal truth that only Love is real.

Replacing Our Perception with Holy Spirit’s Vision

Only if it were possible the Son of God could leave his Father’s Mind, make himself different, and oppose His Will, would it be possible that the self he made, and all it made, should be his master.

Behold the great projection, but look on it with the decision that it must be healed, and not with fear. Nothing you made has any power over you unless you still would be apart from your Creator, and with a will opposed to His. For only if you would believe His Son could be His enemy does it seem possible that what you made is yours. You would condemn His joy to misery, and make Him different. And all the misery you made has been your own. Are you not glad to learn it is not true? Is it not welcome news to hear not one of the illusions that you made replaced the truth? It does seem difficult to believe that everything we perceive in the world is an illusion, a projection of our own mind. We cannot dismiss it by proclaiming, “It’s just an illusion.” If anything we perceive in the world interferes with our joy or disturbs our peace, we are believing the world is real, not an illusion.

If we are willing, the Holy Spirit will use these disruptive and disturbing perceptions to bring our attention to the need to heal our minds. We can bring these perceptions to the Holy Spirit with willingness to receive His vision in their place. This is how we heal our mind. This is how we loose the world from all we thought it was.

Through this process, we learn to see the illusions of the world for what they are — not through proclamation but through accepting a new vision received of the Holy Spirit. This is how we learn to distinguish illusion from truth. This is how we learn to recognize our brother as our savior, at one with us.

Accepting That Only Love Is Real

Do not be afraid to look within. The ego tells you all is black with guilt within you, and bids you not to look. Instead, it bids you look upon your brothers, and see the guilt in them. Yet this you cannot do without remaining blind. For those who see their brothers in the dark, and guilty in the dark in which they shroud them, are too afraid to look upon the light within. Within you is not what you believe is there, and what you put your faith in. Within you is the holy sign of perfect faith your Father has in you. He does not value you as you do. He knows Himself, and knows the truth in you. He knows there is no difference, for He knows not of differences. Can you see guilt where God knows there is perfect innocence? You can deny His knowledge, but you cannot change it. Look, then, upon the light He placed within you, and learn that what you feared was there has been replaced with love. Our Father knows us only as He created us. He sees no darkness in what he created. Our Father is pure Love and we are extensions of that pure Love.

Today our practice is to see ourselves as an extension of the pure Love of our Father. This practice is merely accepting of What we are eternally and What every brother is. Today we focus on accepting the truth and forgiving, or letting go of illusions that there could be anything different than the purity of God’s Love. God is pure Love, and therefore so is everyone. Today we accept the freedom and joy that come with merely accepting the Truth.

Returning Home to God’s Peace

We will be still and listen for the Voice of healing, which will cure all ills as one, restoring saneness to the Son of God. No voice but this can cure. Today we hear a single Voice which speaks to us of truth, where all illusions end, and peace returns to the eternal, quiet home of God.”

With nothing in our hands to which we cling, with lifted hearts and listening minds we pray:

Only salvation can be said to cure.
Speak to us, Father, that we may be healed.

And we will feel salvation cover us with soft protection, and with peace so deep that no illusion can disturb our minds, nor offer proof to us that it is real. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 140, W-pI.140.10:2-4;12:1-4. See also ACIM Lesson 140 Insights.)

The ego always has an agenda. At its core its purpose is to maintain separation from Love. The ego uses myriad forms to make separation and lovelessness appear to be real. As long as we identify with the ego, we will feel isolated and unloved. We seek to cure this “problem” by looking for love in all the wrong places and trying to find some other person or group to join with. This is always a mission of seeking but not finding real Love and oneness.

This is why we must come to the Spirit of Truth within with empty hands and an open heart to receive the gift that was given before time began. It is still ours to claim. No more seeking is needed. We need only accept our Father’s gift. His Voice will teach us to recognize the barriers we have made that hide His gifts from our awareness. As we are willing to be taught and accept the Holy Spirit’s lessons in truth, our barriers to Love will fade away. We will return to the peace of our Home in God.

The Path to Peace Beyond Words

Truth will correct all errors in my mind.

Begin by asking Him Who goes with you upon this undertaking that He be in your awareness as you go with Him. …It is your Self you ask to go with you, and how could He be absent where you are?

You speak to Him today, and make your pledge to let His function be fulfilled through you. To share His function is to share His joy. His confidence is with you, as you say:

Truth will correct all errors in my mind,
And I will rest in Him Who is my Self.

Then let Him lead you gently to the truth, which will envelop you and give you peace so deep and tranquil that you will return to the familiar world reluctantly.

And yet you will be glad to look again upon this world. For you will bring with you the promise of the changes which the truth that goes with you will carry to the world. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 107, W-pI.107.8:1,4;9:2-10:2. See also ACIM Lesson 107 Insights.)

What could be more peaceful than to rest in the Self that is one with God? All of God’s peace is ours. It cannot be disturbed, for God’s peace is changeless and eternal. This is our natural state. We were given it in our creation as God’s Thought.

When circumstances in the world seem to disturb our peace, we need to remind ourselves that what we are perceiving is an error. We need to reclaim the truth that is already in our mind, and the peace of God will return to our awareness. The truth will show us that the disturbing perception was an error. And it will naturally fade away into the nothingness from which it was made. The commitment to welcoming the truth in our minds is the path to peace beyond words.

Choosing God’s Thoughts Instead of My Own

This is salvation’s keynote: What I see reflects a process in my mind, which starts with my idea of what I want. From there, the mind makes up an image of the thing the mind desires, judges valuable, and therefore seeks to find. These images are then projected outward, looked upon, esteemed as real and guarded as one’s own. From insane wishes comes an insane world. From judgment comes a world condemned. And from forgiving thoughts a gentle world comes forth, with mercy for the holy Son of God, to offer him a kindly home where he can rest a while before he journeys on, and help his brothers walk ahead with him, and find the way to Heaven and to God.

Our Father, Your ideas reflect the truth, and mine apart from Yours but make up dreams. Let me behold what only Yours reflect, for Yours and Yours alone establish truth. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 325, W-pII.325.1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 325 Insights.)

A Course in Miracles is a course that teaches the difference between truth and illusions. Most of it focuses on helping us recognize illusions as illusions. Because the images of the world are coming from our mind, we believe they are real.

Some of the images we see in the world do not seem to come from our mind. They come from the collective ego mind we have identified as our own. Through what the Course calls “the quick forgetting,” we forget that these thoughts are coming from our ego-identified mind. This is the slight of hand that makes it appear that we are locked into the dream with no way out. Events in the dream seem to happen to us, beyond our control.

It’s really good news to learn that all images in the world are coming from our identification with the ego mind, which we have chosen. But we can choose again. We can choose to accept the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Who brings us God’s Thoughts of perfect Love to replace the ego’s thoughts that deny Love. This is the miracle the Course is teaching us.

Today is a day of opportunity to choose once again, to choose the guidance of the Holy Spirit to see through the eyes of Love. With this choice, this day will be a blessed day indeed.
