Letting Love Direct Our Thoughts and Actions

What I see is the projection of my own errors of thought [judgments]. I do not understand what I see because it is not understandable. There is no sense in trying to understand it. But there is every reason to let it go, and make room for what can be seen and understood and loved. I can exchange what I see now for this merely by being willing to do so. Is not this a better choice than the one I made before?

The thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything be­cause I am trying to think without God. What I call “my” thoughts are not my real thoughts. My real thoughts are the thoughts I think with God. I am not aware of them because I have made my thoughts to take their place. I am willing to rec­ognize that my thoughts do not mean anything, and to let them go. I choose to have them be replaced by what they were in­tended to replace. My thoughts are meaningless, but all creation lies in the thoughts I think with God. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 51, W-pI.51.3:2-8;3:2-8. See also ACIM Lesson 51 Insights.)

Because God is Love, our real thoughts are thoughts of Love. These loving thoughts are all inclusive because Love makes no exceptions. God’s Love is given without condition or limit.

In the world it seems that we have different levels of love. Some love is reserved for certain special people. Other love is given with expectations of something of value to be returned, even if it’s only an expression of thanks.

This love is based on judging whether the focus of this love is worthy of it. Judgments can only be made if there is a belief that what is being judged is separate from the perceiver. To perceive the other as separate, we must first believe that we are separate. This belief is an attack on the oneness of God’s Love. We need to let go of this belief because it is costing us the awareness of God’s gift of Love and the peace and joy that come with it.

Today we practice pausing to remember Love and let Love direct our thoughts, our words and actions. By welcoming the loving thoughts we think with God, we remember Love we are.

The Journey of Awakening to Our True Self

[“Love created me like itself”] is a complete and accurate statement of what you are. This is why you are the light of the world. This is why God appointed you as the world’s savior. This is why the Son of God looks to you for his salvation. He is saved by what you are.”

…think about your reality and its wholly unchanged and unchangeable nature. …[examples]:

Holiness created me holy.
Kindness created me kind.
Helpfulness created me helpful.
Perfection created me perfect.

Any attribute which is in accord with God as He defines Himself is appropriate for use. We are trying today to undo your definition of God and replace it with His Own. We are also trying to emphasize that you are part of His definition of Himself.

You need to hear the truth about yourself as frequently as possible, because your mind is so preoccu­pied with false self-images. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 67, W-pI.67.1:1-5;2:1,3-9;5:2. See also ACIM Lesson 67 Insights.)

Love is one, changeless and limitless. Our true Self is Love with all Its attributes. The image we have accepted of ourselves as a body is clearly not changeless, limitless nor one with all. This image cannot be real because only Love is real.

Our salvation from the body in the world comes with letting go of our belief that the body and the ego thought system of separation is our identity. Letting go of this mistaken belief seems frightening because it seems that it would be the end of our existence.

The teachings of the Course involve two facets: It needs to help us accept the Love that is our Identity. Simultaneously it teaches us what the ego is and the price we pay in pain, suffering and fear by believing that the body is our identity and separation is real. It is a gentle process that we each take at our own pace. God’s Voice will never lead us into increased fear.

But as we learn that we do not want to pay the price that separation and specialness offer, we freely withdraw our investment in this false identity. Gradually we accept the Love we are and invest in it by giving Love. Our life experience shifts from fear and guilt, anger and depression, to increasing peacefulness, happiness, compassion and helpfulness. It is a journey of awakening to Love.

Seeing With the Eyes of Love

I am surrounded by the Love of God.

Father, You stand before me and behind, beside me, in the place I see myself, and everywhere I go. You are in all the things I look upon, the sounds I hear, and every hand that reaches for my own. In You time disappears, and place becomes a meaningless belief. For what sur­rounds Your Son and keeps him safe is Love itself. There is no source but this, and nothing is that does not share its holiness; that stands beyond Your one creation, or without the Love which holds all things within itself. Father, Your Son is like Yourself. We come to You in Your Own Name today, to be at peace within Your everlasting Love.

My brothers, join with me in this today. This is salvation’s prayer. Must we not join in what will save the world, along with us? (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 264, W-pII.264. See also ACIM Lesson 264 Insights.)

We need to learn to distrust our interpretations of everything the body perceives. Instead we need to ask of everything, “What does this mean? What is it for?” As we let the Holy Spirit in our mind answer these questions, we will learn to overlook the forms we see. With His help, we will indeed see that we are surrounded by the Love of God. Our brothers become messengers of Love reflecting back to us the Love we are.

As seeing with the eyes of Love becomes our priority, appearances in the world have diminishing effects. Peace is an increasingly predominant state of mind. We know we are safe and loved by a Love that is eternal and unlimited. We rest in the peace of God knowing that we are indeed surrounded by His Love.

When the Veil of Separation Is Dispelled, Love Is Revealed

In order to understand the teaching-learning plan of salvation, it is necessary to grasp the concept of time that the course sets forth. Atonement corrects illusions, not truth. Therefore, it corrects what never was. Further, the plan for this correction was established and completed simultaneously, for the Will of God is entirely apart from time. So is all reality, being of Him. The instant the idea of separation entered the mind of God’s Son, in that same instant was God’s Answer given. In time this happened very long ago. In reality it never happened at all.

The world of time is the world of illusion. What happened long ago seems to be happening now. Choices made long since appear to be open; yet to be made. What has been learned and understood and long ago passed by is looked upon as a new thought, a fresh idea, a different approach. Because your will is free you can accept what has already happened at any time you choose, and only then will you realize that it was always there. As the course emphasizes, you are not free to choose the curriculum, or even the form in which you will learn it. You are free, however, to decide when you want to learn it. And as you accept it, it is already learned.” (M-2.2-3)

Time is the ego’s mechanism to hide the present from our awareness. Because Reality is eternal, It is always present in the now moment. The ego uses time to overlay the present with “memories” of the past. But these memories are illusions of images of separation, which were never real and cannot be real now. Even concerns about the future are built upon images from the past.

Yet behind the ego’s images of separation remains our true Self, radiating the Light of Love without limit and forever. It is the same Light of Love that God has given His Son, for this Self remains eternally united with God. We lift the veil that hides our Self from our awareness by forgiving our belief in the images of separation.

To help us forgive, the Holy Spirit was given us to transform our misperceptions. As His Light reveals the Love beyond the forms projected on the veil of separation, the veil is dispelled. The magnificent radiance of the Self of every brother joins with our own and we remember we are truly Love and nothing else. We find peace and perfect happiness here.

Healing Our Mind with Christ’s Vision

Do not, then, be deceived in your brother, and see only his loving thoughts as his reality, for by denying that his mind is split you will heal yours. Accept him as his Father accepts him and heal him unto Christ, for Christ is his healing and yours. Christ is the Son of God Who is in no way separate from His Father, Whose every thought is as loving as the Thought of His Father by which He was created. Be not deceived in God’s Son, for thereby you must be deceived in yourself.

In the real world there is no sickness, for there is no separation and no division. Only loving thoughts are recognized, and because no one is without your help, the Help of God goes with you everywhere. As you become willing to accept this Help by asking for It, you will give It because you want It. …Ask, then, to learn of the reality of your brother, because this is what you will perceive in him, and you will see your beauty reflected in his.

Do not accept your brother’s variable perception of himself for his split mind is yours, and you will not accept your healing without his. For you share the real world as you share Heaven, and his healing is yours. To love yourself is to heal yourself, and you cannot perceive part of you as sick and achieve your goal. What we experience as a body is not reality. What we see a brother do, hear him say, or what appears to happen to his body or our own, is not real. To heal our mind we need to learn to see the Christ in everyone.

The vision of Christ is in our mind; it cannot be seen with the body’s eyes. As we are willing to forgive our attachment to the body as our identity, we open to Christ’s vision in our mind. With this vision we see the true Self of our brother, which is our own true Self. This Self is the Christ, God’s extension of His Love.

Today we ask for Christ’s vision to see the Reality of Love in everything. As we accept this Reality, our mind is healed for it remembers its unity in the Mind of Love. With this remembering the world is seen anew through the eyes of Love.

Love Lights the Way to Our True Treasure

…be glad to give some time to God today, and understand there is no better use for time than this.

Open your mind and rest. The world that seems to hold you prisoner can be escaped by anyone who does not hold it dear. Withdraw all value you have placed upon [the world’s] meager offerings and senseless gifts, and let the gift of God replace them all.

Call to your Father, certain that His Voice will answer. He Himself has promised this. And He Himself will place a spark of truth within your mind wherever you give up a false belief, a dark illusion of your own reality and what love means. He will shine through your idle thoughts today, and help you under­stand the truth of love. In loving gentleness He will abide with you, as you allow His Voice to teach love’s meaning to your clean and open mind. And He will bless the lesson with His Love.

We will remember [all our brothers] throughout the day, because we cannot leave a part of us outside our love if we would know our Self. (W-pI.127.7:2;8:2-4;9;12:1)

The world we live in seems to be all that is real. Yet it is only a dream that seems real only because of our belief in it. It is no more real than a dream we have when we are sleeping at night. These dreams can be very vivid and can lead to increased heart rate and fear stimulated by the images in the dream. Yet when we awaken from these dreams, we awaken only to the ego’s dream of separation where the oneness of Love is denied.

We can awaken from this dream by withdrawing the value we give to our identity as a body and to things in the world we believe will bring us happiness and safety. The Course is teaching us that what we perceive in the world are empty images with no meaning of their own. It is only the value we give these illusionary images that seem to give them meaning. In every now moment, we can withdraw the value we have mistakenly given to these images.

To help us recognize the reality of Love that has been hidden by these ego based images, God gave us His Voice to bring His Light to enlighten our dream. Each time we pause to relax into the peace of God within, we welcome His Love. Here we find the only lasting and true value, God’s Love.

Today we dedicate to practicing stepping back and letting Love light the way to our true treasure — God’s gift of Love.

Choosing a Better Way

You are my goal, my Father. Only You.

Where would I go but Heaven? What could be a substitute for happiness? What gift could I prefer before the peace of God? What treasure would I seek and find and keep that can compare with my Identity? And would I rather live with fear than love?

You are my goal, my Father. What but You could I desire to have? What way but that which leads to You could I desire to walk? And what except the memory of You could signify to me the end of dreams and futile substitutions for the truth? You are my only goal. Your Son would be as You created him. What way but this could I expect to recognize my Self, and be at one with my Identity? (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 287, W-pII.287. See also ACIM Lesson 287 Insights.)

The goal of remembering our Identity in God is the goal for happiness, because God’s Will for His Son is perfect happiness. When we identify with the little self image the ego offers, our goal is unhappiness because it is the denial of our unity with God. The best the ego can offer is empty images that seem to offer temporary happiness. But because these images are not real, we soon realize that the seeming happiness they brought is based on nothing.

The ego’s answer for this dissatisfaction, which comes with this realization, is to send us on a fruitless search for some form it tries to convince us will make us happy. None of these empty images can offer us anything but the pain of loss and guilt. Eventually everyone comes to the point of no longer tolerating this pain. This is a turning point that sets us on a search for a better way.

A Course in Miracles offers us a better way. It offers us a means to forgive ourselves for choosing a false identity in place of the Identity God gave us in creating us as His Son. Beyond the image of a body is our true Self, united with all as God’s one Son.

Today let’s join together in choosing a better way, a way that leads to eternal happiness, peace that cannot be disturbed and the blessing of God’s eternal Love. Let’s choose to let the Holy Spirit help us forgive our vain imaginings and remember God.
