Accepting Our Completion in Love

²We said before that the Holy Spirit must teach through comparisons, and uses opposites to point to truth. ³The holy instant is the opposite of the ego’s fixed belief in salvation through vengeance for the past. ⁴In the holy instant it is understood that the past is gone, and with its passing the drive for vengeance has been uprooted and has disappeared. ⁵The stillness and the peace of now enfold you in perfect gentleness. ⁶Everything is gone except the truth.

⁷In the holy instant is His reminder that His Son will always be exactly as he was created. ⁸And everything the Holy Spirit teaches is to remind you that you have received what God has given you.

There is nothing you can hold against reality. ²All that must be forgiven are the illusions you have held against your brothers. ³Their reality has no past, and only illusions can be forgiven.

Remember that you always choose between truth and illusion; between the real Atonement that would heal and the ego’s “atonement” that would destroy. ²The power of God and all His Love, without limit, will support you as you seek only your place in the plan of Atonement arising from His Love. (A Course in Miracles, T-16.VII.6:2-6;8:7–8;9:1-3;10:1-2. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The body is the central figure in the ego’s portrayal of separation. It is built upon a history of the past. Its DNA links the body to preceding generations of bodies. Its heritage is considered important and establishes its uniqueness; it seems to affirm its existence. Without the past there is no foundation for the seeming existence of the body. The Course emphasizes that we are not a body.

Our reality is in the now moment, without the past. Its changeless foundation is the eternal Love of God, given us in our Creation. The present moment is the time to forgive our mistaken identification with the body and its dependence upon a past that does not exist.

As we let the Holy Spirit teach us to see the reality of Love beyond appearances in the world, we free ourselves from the past. We are free to be Love without limit. When the past has been wholly forgiven, our awareness of the Love we are is complete. This is the Atonement.

There Is No Substitute for God’s Love

³The Holy Spirit takes you gently by the hand, and retraces with you your mad journey outside yourself, leading you gently back to the truth and safety within. ⁴He brings all your insane projections and the wild substitutions that you have placed outside you to the truth. ⁵Thus He reverses the course of insanity and restores you to reason.

In your relationship with your brother, where He has taken charge of everything at your request, He has set the course inward to the truth you share. ²In the mad world outside you nothing can be shared but only substituted, and sharing and substituting have nothing in common in reality. ³Within yourself you love your brother with a perfect love. ⁴Here is holy ground, in which no substitution can enter, and where only the truth in your brother can abide. ⁵Here you are joined in God, as much together as you are with Him. ⁶The original error has not entered here, nor ever will. ⁷Here is the radiant truth, to which the Holy Spirit has committed your relationship. ⁸Let Him bring it here, where you would have it be. ⁹Give Him but a little faith in your brother, to help Him show you that no substitute you made for Heaven can keep you from it. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.I.8:3–9:9. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

God created His Son eternally united with Himself. This unbreakable link joins us also with every brother. We are forever united as one in God’s Love. In this unity we are perfectly safe. This is our Reality.

This does not seem to be our reality because we have accepted the ego’s substitute world where separation is believed to be real. Our unquestioned belief in the ego’s substitute makes bodies seem real and death our ultimate end. But this substitute is not real. By definition, substitutes are not the original. The truth of our Origin is hidden by the ego’s substitutes, but It is not lost. We have the Holy Spirit to gently guide us out of the quagmire of ego substitutions back Home to awareness of the Love we are.

Today we welcome the Holy Spirit’s guidance, for we would return Home to the peace of God.

The Bridge to Truth

There is a very simple way to find the door to true forgiveness, and perceive it open wide in welcome. ²When you feel that you are tempted to accuse someone of sin in any form, do not allow your mind to dwell on what you think he did, for that is self-deception. ³Ask instead, “Would I accuse myself of doing this?”

Thus will you see alternatives for choice in terms that render choosing meaningful, and keep your mind as free of guilt and pain as God Himself intended it to be, and as it is in truth. ²It is but lies that would condemn. ³In truth is innocence the only thing there is. ⁴Forgiveness stands between illusions and the truth; between the world you see and that which lies beyond; between the hell of guilt and Heaven’s gate.

Across this bridge, as powerful as love which laid its blessing on it, are all dreams of evil and of hatred and attack brought silently to truth. (A Course in Miracles, W-134.9:1–11:1. See also ACIM Lesson 134 Insights.)

Forgiveness is the bridge to truth. It is the bridge from fear and hate to Love and innocence. In truth, where all is one, forgiveness is not needed. But in the dream of separation, forgiveness is the means to awaken from the dream.

The dream is held in place with judgment. Perceptions of “another,” different from itself is believed to be normal and necessary for survival. Judgment as defense is deemed necessary to protect our fragile identity. Forgiveness looks upon perception as meaningless and sees beyond it to the true meaning of Love, the only Reality.

Today we practice asking the Holy Spirit to help us look beyond appearances to awareness of Love’s presence everywhere and always. In this awareness we know we are safe, innocent and loved. We are grateful to be part of our Creator’s eternal extension of Himself.

Learning to Welcome Love

Let me not see myself as limited.

Let me behold the Son of God today, and witness to his glory. ²Let me not try to obscure the holy light in him, and see his strength diminished and reduced to frailty; nor perceive the lacks in him with which I would attack his sovereignty.

He is Your Son, my Father. ²And today I would behold his gentleness instead of my illusions. ³He is what I am, and as I see him so I see myself. ⁴Today I would see truly, that this day I may at last identify with him. (A Course in Miracles, W-250. See also ACIM Lesson 250 Insights.)

The world we see is a mirror that shows us what we believe is real. The perception of a world outside is a projection of our beliefs. This is an important key that the Holy Spirit uses to show us where our mind needs healing.

If the world we see seems to make us feel unhappy, fearful or unloved, we are being shown a belief that needs healing. If we practice bringing those perceptions to the Holy Spirit for His loving correction, we step forward on our journey of awakening to Love. Love is ever present. It is what we are.

We have induced a dream of lovelessness by identifying with the ego. But the Holy Spirit will gently help us awaken from this dream. He shows us the Love beyond the appearances if we are willing to accept His help. He helps us respond to calls for Love which may appear in others. These calls represent our own calls based on our belief in lack of Love.

Love has no limits, being eternal and changeless. Love calls to us unceasingly. We answer the call by accepting the Holy Spirit’s help to heal or forgive our beliefs and welcome the Love that is ever present.

Listening to Our Best Friend’s Voice

Do you not understand that to oppose the Holy Spirit is to fight yourself? ²He tells you but your will; He speaks for you. ³In His Divinity is but your own. ⁴And all He knows is but your knowledge, saved for you that you may do your will through Him. ⁵God asks you do your will. ⁶He joins with you. …¹¹God is no enemy to you. ¹²He asks no more than that He hear you call Him “Friend.”

How wonderful it is to do your will! ²For that is freedom. ³There is nothing else that ever should be called by freedom’s name. ⁴Unless you do your will you are not free. ⁵And would God leave His Son without what he has chosen for himself? ⁶God but ensured that you would never lose your will when He gave you His perfect Answer. ⁷Hear It now, that you may be reminded of His Love and learn your will.

Look once again upon your enemy, the one you chose to hate instead of love. ²For thus was hatred born into the world, and thus the rule of fear established there. ³Now hear God speak to you, through Him Who is His Voice and yours as well, reminding you that it is not your will to hate and be a prisoner to fear, a slave to death, a little creature with a little life. ⁴Your will is boundless; it is not your will that it be bound. ⁵What lies in you has joined with God Himself in all creation’s birth. (A Course in Miracles, T-30.II.1:1-6,11-12;2:1-7;3:1-5. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego tells us that if we accept God’s Will, we will be sacrificing our freedom. But this is just the ego’s projection. In truth, when we identify with the ego and its quest for specialness, we sacrifice our true Will.

We were created by Love as Love. Love’s only desire is to extend Itself without limit. When we accept separation as true, we sacrifice awareness of our eternal unity in the oneness of Love. This sacrifice has left us feeling alone, friendless, weak and fearful. Yet our true Will has never left us.

The Holy Spirit speaks for our Will, which is to be and extend Love without reservation. When we choose to listen to our best Friend’s Voice, we choose freedom. We choose happiness. We choose peace.

Gratitude for God’s Love

Love is the way I walk in gratitude.

⁷Your gratitude is due to Him alone Who made all cause of sorrow disappear throughout the world.

…to One Who offers you the certain means whereby all pain is healed, and suffering replaced with laughter and with happiness.”

²Love makes no comparisons.

…let your gratitude make room for all who will escape with you; the sick, the weak, the needy and afraid, and those who mourn a seeming loss or feel apparent pain, who suffer cold or hunger, or who walk the way of hatred and the path of death. ³All these go with you. ⁴Let us not compare ourselves with them, for thus we split them off from our awareness of the unity we share with them, as they must share with us.

⁶When your forgiveness is complete you will have total gratitude, for you will see that everything has earned the right to love by being loving, even as your Self.

Our gratitude will pave the way to Him, and shorten our learning time by more than you could ever dream of. ²Gratitude goes hand in hand with love, and where one is the other must be found. ³For gratitude is but an aspect of the Love which is the Source of all creation. (A Course in Miracles, W-195.1:7;2:2;4:2;5:2-4;8:6;10:1-3. See also ACIM Lesson 195 Insights.)

In a romantic relationship we say we have fallen in love. We feel gratitude for this person in our lives. Our thoughts are happy.

This experience is but a minute taste of the gratitude that comes with accepting the Love of God, which joins us with everything and everyone. Every moment is filled with extending Love. We see that same Love everywhere because we are one in it. Conflict is impossible. In that oneness, there is no thought of comparison.

The joy of being in the flow of Love is limitless. We feel complete and know we lack nothing. We are content to rest with all our brothers in the Love of God.

Dispelling Our Barriers to Love

²The purpose of the world you see is to obscure your function of forgiveness, and provide you with a justification for forgetting it.

Nothing the body’s eyes seem to see can be anything but a form of temptation, since this was the purpose of the body itself. ²Yet we have learned that the Holy Spirit has another use for all the illusions you have made, and therefore He sees another purpose in them. ³To the Holy Spirit, the world is a place where you learn to forgive yourself what you think of as your sins. ⁴In this perception, the physical appearance of temptation becomes the spiritual recognition of salvation.

…your function here is to be the light of the world, a function given you by God. …³The world’s salvation awaits your forgiveness, because through it does the Son of God escape from all illusions, and thus from all temptation. ⁴The Son of God is you.

²Let me not forget my function.
³Let me not try to substitute mine for God’s.
⁴Let me forgive and be happy.
(A Course in Miracles, W-64.1:2;2;3:1,3-4;6:2-4. See also ACIM Lesson 64 Insights.)

The wish for specialness is the wish for misery. This wish is a demand to be separate from the Source of happiness and peace. Because God could not offer specialness and remain the Love He is, the ego made substitutes that it tells us will make us happy. But there is no substitute for the Love of God that will make us happy.

In every moment we choose between searching for appearances that we believe will make us happy or accepting God’s Love. Happiness is an attribute of Love. We do not need to seek for Love because Love is What we are. But we do need to seek for the false images that we accept as substitutes for His Love. When these false images are recognized as false and meaningless, we let them go. We realize they are incapable of bringing us true happiness. With this recognition, we forgive ourselves. We let go of our barriers to the awareness of Love’s presence.
