Finding the Peace of God Within

Why wait for Heaven? Those who seek the light are merely covering their eyes. The light is in them now. Enlightenment is but a recognition, not a change at all.

Sit quietly and close your eyes. The light within you is sufficient. It alone has power to give the gift of sight to you. Exclude the outer world, and let your thoughts fly to the peace within. They know the way. For honest thoughts, untainted by the dream of worldly things outside yourself, become the holy messengers of God Himself. (A Course in Miracles W-pI.188.1:1-4;6)

It’s interesting to observe how my habitual thoughts about things in the world distract me from being aware of the peace of God within. That is their purpose.

The ego thought system does not want us to be aware of the peace of God within, because to do that we have to put the ego aside. It can no longer be in control. The experience of the peace of God is so compelling that, if we let it in, we would fly to it and let the ego go.

While thoughts of the world still seem to have appeal, our practice is to pause frequently throughout the day to welcome peace. Even if we are not able to completely set aside thoughts of the world, this practice loosens their grip and will ultimately lead to the acceptance of God’s peace, returning us to Heaven where we belong.
