The Practice That Brings Us Peace & Patience

Patience

Those who are certain of the outcome can afford to wait, and wait without anxiety. ²Patience is natural to the teacher of God. ³All he sees is certain outcome, at a time perhaps unknown to him as yet, but not in doubt. ⁴The time will be as right as is the answer. ⁵And this is true for everything that happens now or in the future. ⁶The past as well held no mistakes; nothing that did not serve to benefit the world, as well as him to whom it seemed to happen. ⁷Perhaps it was not understood at the time. ⁸Even so, the teacher of God is willing to reconsider all his past decisions, if they are causing pain to anyone. ⁹Patience is natural to those who trust. ¹⁰Sure of the ultimate interpretation of all things in time, no outcome already seen or yet to come can cause them fear. (A Course in Miracles, M-4.VIII.1)

Time is an illusion and all things in time are illusions. They are constructs of the ego and by definition are not real. Impatience is a sure sign that we are making illusions real because of our belief in them. Illusions do not matter in truth because they are not real and do not exist. This is the ultimate lesson all of us who believe we are in time must learn.

Whenever we recognize our peace has been disturbed, we have an opportunity to forgive with the Holy Spirit’s help. In that moment, if we are willing to accept the Holy Spirit’s lesson, we will learn that beyond the disturbing appearance lies the certainty and safety of God’s changeless Love.

The consistent practice of being mindful of our thoughts and welcoming the Holy Spirit’s help to cleanse them of our misperceptions and mistaken interpretations will set us free. Our state of mind will become increasingly peaceful, happy and loving. Today is a good day to practice.

The Bridge from Judgment to Love’s Oneness

⁶How foolish to believe you can attack! ⁷How mad to think that you could be condemned, and that the holy Son of God can die!

The stillness of your Self remains unmoved, untouched by thoughts like these, and unaware of any condemnation which could need forgiveness. ²Dreams of any kind are strange and alien to the truth. ³And what but truth could have a Thought which builds a bridge to it that brings illusions to the other side?

²The truth bestows these words upon your mind, that you may find the key to light and let the darkness end:

³Only my condemnation injures me.
⁴Only my own forgiveness sets me free.

⁵Do not forget today that there can be no form of suffering that fails to hide an unforgiving thought. ⁶Nor can there be a form of pain forgiveness cannot heal.

Accept the one illusion which proclaims there is no condemnation in God’s Son, and Heaven is remembered instantly; the world forgotten, all its weird beliefs forgotten with it, as the face of Christ appears unveiled at last in this one dream [of forgiveness]. ²This is the gift the Holy Spirit holds for you from God your Father. ³Let today be celebrated both on earth and in your holy home as well. ⁴Be kind to Both, as you forgive the trespasses you thought Them guilty of, and see your innocence shining upon you from the face of Christ. Guilt is the price we pay for judging anything or anyone. Our true Self is perfect Love and Love does not condemn. Any thought of condemnation or judgment denies the Love we are. This denial leads to the fear and guilt we experience in the world of separation. This world is not real because it denies the reality of Love.

Having bought into the belief of separation and specialness, we need the means to let this mistaken belief go. Forgiveness is the means given us by God through the Holy Spirit to free ourself from the ego’s dream of guilt.

We cannot forgive on our own because the belief that we are on our own imprisons us in the ego’s dream. Forgiveness is the bridge from the dream of separation to our Home in Heaven. Today we welcome the Holy Spirit’s help to forgive our mistaken beliefs and accept our true Self in God’s changeless Love.

Our Dedication to Awaken to Love

I give my life to God to guide today.

Father, I give You all my thoughts today. ²I would have none of mine. ³In place of them, give me Your Own. ⁴I give You all my acts as well, that I may do Your Will instead of seeking goals which cannot be obtained, and wasting time in vain imaginings. ⁵Today I come to You. ⁶I will step back and merely follow You. ⁷Be You the Guide, and I the follower who questions not the wisdom of the Infinite, nor Love whose tenderness I cannot comprehend, but which is yet Your perfect gift to me.

Today we have one Guide to lead us on. ²And as we walk together, we will give this day to Him with no reserve at all. ³This is His day. ⁴And so it is a day of countless gifts and mercies unto us. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 233. See also ACIM Lesson 233 Insights.)

This dedication, fully embraced, will awaken us to our true Self. It will free us from the limitations the ego imposes to maintain specialness and separation. We choose this dedication today because we want to be happy. We want to be at peace. We want to know that we are Love, loved and loving. We want to be free as God created His Son to be.

Giving the Holy Spirit’s Purpose to the Body

It is essential for your progress in this course that you accept today’s idea [I am not a body. I am free], and hold it very dear. ²Be not concerned that to the ego it is quite insane. ³The ego holds the body dear because it dwells in [the body], and lives united with the home that it has made. ⁴It is a part of the illusion that has sheltered [the ego] from being found illusory itself.

The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek for freedom. ²In Him they have found what they have sought. ³The body’s purpose now is unambiguous.

Be free today. ²And carry freedom as your gift to those who still believe they are enslaved within a body. ³Be you free, so that the Holy Spirit can make use of your escape from bondage, to set free the many who perceive themselves as bound and helpless and afraid. ⁴Let love replace their fears through you. ⁵Accept salvation now, and give your mind to Him Who calls to you to make this gift to Him. ⁶For He would give you perfect freedom, perfect joy, and hope that finds its full accomplishment in God. The ego’s seeming existence depends upon our belief that the body is our identity. With this belief we accept all the limitations built into the ego’s definition of our identity. The body’s limitations are essential to maintaining the quest for specialness. The body is what sets us apart from everyone and every thing.

Yet there can be no differences in the oneness of God’s Love, and only God’s Love is real. When we disengage our identity from the body, we free ourselves from all its perceived limitations. Our true Self knows no limitations, for it is held safely in the Love of God. It remains free and unaffected by the illusions in our dreams of specialness and separation.

We reclaim our true Identity by accepting today’s idea. As we let the Holy Spirit be our interpreter for all things perceived through the body, we learn to see past the ego’s illusions to the Light of Love that is everywhere to be seen through the vision of the Holy Spirit.

This is a perfect day to practice remembering, “I am not a body. I am free.” This is how we give the body the Holy Spirit’s purpose to awaken from the dream.

Home Again

This is my holy instant of release.

Father, it is today that I am free, because my will is Yours. ²I thought to make another will. ³Yet nothing that I thought apart from You exists. ⁴And I am free because I was mistaken, and did not affect my own reality at all by my illusions. ⁵Now I give them up, and lay them down before the feet of truth, to be removed forever from my mind. ⁶This is my holy instant of release. ⁷Father, I know my will is one with Yours.

And so today we find our glad return to Heaven, which we never really left. ²The Son of God this day lays down his dreams. ³The Son of God this day comes home again, released from sin and clad in holiness, with his right mind restored to him at last. God’s one Thought is the Thought of Love. His Son is that Thought of Love, unchanging and unchangeable, eternally extending. As His Son, we share that Thought of Love. This is our only real Thought.

No thought apart from the Thought of Love exists at all. The thoughts we are aware of in the world are illusions because they are forms of separation which cannot exist in the oneness of Love. We are free in every instant to set aside illusionary thoughts of differences and separation. We are free to return Home again from wandering in a wilderness of loveless illusions.

Forgiveness is the means to release illusions from our mind. Today, with the Holy Spirit’s help, we reclaim our Home in the Thought of Love. Each instant is an opportunity to let the past go and welcome the holy instant of release.

Letting Our Mistaken Thoughts Be Corrected

God has condemned me not. No more do I.

My Father knows my holiness. ²Shall I deny His knowledge, and believe in what His knowledge makes impossible? ³Shall I accept as true what He proclaims as false? ⁴Or shall I take His Word for what I am, since He is my Creator, and the One Who knows the true condition of His Son?

Father, I was mistaken in myself, because I failed to realize the Source from which I came. ²I have not left that Source to enter in a body and to die. ³My holiness remains a part of me, as I am part of You. ⁴And my mistakes about myself are dreams. ⁵I let them go today. ⁶And I stand ready to receive Your Word alone for what I really am. The world we experience as a body is a dream founded in a mistaken belief about what we are. We do not have to experience the pain, loss, loneliness, fear and guilt that we experience in this dream. Mistaken thoughts about ourselves can be corrected. God has given us His Corrector to help us learn the truth of What we are. We remain eternally united with our Creator. As we let go of our mistaken thoughts about ourself, the dream fades and we become increasingly aware of the sure protection of our Home in the Heart of God.

Anytime we think we can be harmed by any thing or circumstance, we are belittling or condemning our self. We are seeing our self as less than God created us — vulnerable to a force greater than our true Self. Yet God gave us all His power when He created us like Himself. There is no greater power. We are safe, for we are the strength and power of God.

Seeing the Happy Truth in Our Brothers

Vision will come to you at first in glimpses, but they will be enough to show you what is given you who see your brother sinless. ²Truth is restored to you through your desire, as it was lost to you through your desire for something else. ³Open the holy place that you closed off by valuing the “something else,” and what was never lost will quietly return. ⁴It has been saved for you. ⁵Vision would not be necessary had judgment not been made. ⁶Desire now its whole undoing, and it is done for you.

Do you not want to know your own Identity? ²Would you not happily exchange your doubts for certainty? ³Would you not willingly be free of misery, and learn again of joy? ⁴Your holy relationship offers all this to you. …¹⁰Vision is freely given to those who ask to see.

Your brother’s sinlessness is given you in shining light, to look on with the Holy Spirit’s vision and to rejoice in along with Him. ²For peace will come to all who ask for it with real desire and sincerity of purpose, shared with the Holy Spirit and at one with Him on what salvation is. ³Be willing, then, to see your brother sinless, that Christ may rise before your vision and give you joy. ⁴And place no value on your brother’s body, which holds him to illusions of what he is. Relationships become holy when we are willing to let the Holy Spirit’s vision show us the truth beyond the appearance of bodies and what they do in the world. We cannot see truly if we judge a brother by what his body does. To receive the Holy Spirit’s vision we must be willing to give up our obsession with judging. Love does not judge, for it sees only reflections of itself everywhere.

The habit of judging is undone through forgiveness. Forgiveness depends upon our willingness to let go of judgment and accept the vision that shows us Love’s presence. Every day in the world presents opportunities to forgive. Each time we are willing to claim the opportunity we experience at least a taste of the blessing that comes with seeing the presence of Love in our brother and in the world.

As our willingness increases we recognize more of the opportunities available to us to see Love instead of fear, innocence instead of sin. The joy and peace that come with forgiveness motivate us to increase our willingness. Our days are increasingly happy and less stressful, for we see less cause for conflict. More and more we see the happy truth in our brothers that we are united in Love as God’s one Son.
