Serving as a Teacher of God

A teacher of God is anyone who chooses to be one. His qualifications consist solely in this; somehow, somewhere he has made a deliberate choice in which he did not see his interests as apart from someone else’s.

[The function of teachers of God] is to save time. Each one begins as a single light, but with the Call at its center it is a light that cannot be limited. And each one saves a thousand years of time as the world judges it.

There is a course for every teacher of God. The form of the course varies greatly. So do the particular teaching aids involved. But the content of the course never changes. Its central theme is always, “God’s Son is guiltless, and in his innocence is his salvation.” It can be taught by actions or thoughts; in words or soundlessly; in any language or in no language; in any place or time or manner. It does not matter who the teacher was before he heard the Call. He has become a savior by his answering. He has seen someone else as himself. He has therefore found his own salvation and the salvation of the world. In his rebirth is the world reborn. (A Course in Miracles, M-1.1:1-2;2:11-13;3)

In the introduction to A Course in Miracles it says, “This is a required course.” It’s required because everyone must learn that God’s Creation is innocent. Thus the lesson for us all to learn is to forgive our judgments that cause us to perceive ourselves as separate and therefore guilty of denying our unity with all of God’s Creation.

The antidote to guilt is the recognition of our oneness with All That is. In this oneness our interests with everyone are the same. There can be no differences in what is one. The recognition of our oneness returns us to accepting God’s Law of Love and letting go of the ego’s laws of separation. Each time we look upon a brother with Love or answer his call for Love with Love, we are serving the teacher of God’s function. We do our part in healing the mind that mistakenly believed separation was real.

Today is a happy day of practicing letting the Holy Spirit judge all things on our behalf. His judgment recognizes only the oneness of Love as real. As we follow His lead, we function as a teacher of God.

The Means to Accept Our Life in God

When your body and your ego and your dreams are gone, you will know that you will last forever. Perhaps you think this is accomplished through death, but nothing is accomplished through death, because death is nothing. Everything is accomplished through life, and life is of the mind and in the mind. The body neither lives nor dies, because it cannot contain you who are life. If we share the same mind, you can overcome death because I did. Death is an attempt to resolve conflict by not deciding at all. Like any other impossible solution the ego attempts, it will not work.

God did not make the body, because it is destructible, and therefore not of the Kingdom. The body is the symbol of what you think you are. It is clearly a separation device, and therefore does not exist. The Holy Spirit, as always, takes what you have made and translates it into a learning device. Again as always, He reinterprets what the ego uses as an argument for separation into a demonstration against it. If the mind can heal the body, but the body cannot heal the mind, then the mind must be stronger than the body. Every miracle demonstrates this. (A Course in Miracles, T-6.V.A.1-2. The fact that God did not make the body is one of the hardest concepts in the Course to accept as true. Yet this fact is the foundation for forgiveness, which is necessary to heal our mind and return it to its God-given place of Love in the Heart of Love. We resist this fact because it makes the body, which we believe is our identity, meaningless and therefore unreal. Acceptance of this fact would mean the end of what we believe we are. We perceive this as death. Yet in truth it restores us to the only Life there is — the Life we share with God.

The Holy Spirit recognizes our attachment to the body as our identity. To help us accept the truth of What we are, He reinterprets the body as a means for communicating Love to our brothers and ourselves. He uses the body to answer the calls for Love from our brothers (guilt, fear depression and anger) with Love.

Each time we let the Holy Spirit respond with Love through us, we learn of the Love that is in us. We see more clearly that we are not a body. We are Love and nothing else. This process is kind and gentle, and does not trigger fear of loss or our identity. On the contrary, each time we see the effect of giving Love, we experience greater peace and joy. This motivates us to be more alert to answer calls for Love with Love because it blesses us as we bless our brother.

Forgiveness Is the Way Home

The real world, in its loveliness, you learn to reach. Fantasies are all undone, and no one and nothing remain still bound by them, and by your own forgiveness you are free to see. Yet what you see is only what you made, with the blessing of your forgiveness on it. And with this final blessing of God’s Son upon himself, the real perception, born of the new perspective he has learned, has served its purpose.

Perception will be meaningless when it has been perfected, for everything that has been used for learning will have no function. Nothing will ever change; no shifts nor shadings, no differences, no variations that made perception possible will still occur.

The real world is attained simply by the complete forgiveness of the old, the world you see without forgiveness. The great Transformer [Holy Spirit] of perception will undertake with you the careful searching of the mind that made this world, and uncover to you the seeming reasons for your making it. In the light of the real reason that He brings, as you follow Him, He will show you that there is no reason here at all. Each spot His reason touches grows alive with beauty, and what seemed ugly in the darkness of your lack of reason is suddenly released to loveliness. We have taught ourselves to believe in the reality of the world we experience as bodies. We have taught ourselves to believe illusions are real. We must unlearn or forgive these insane lessons in order to perceive the real world, the world of Love and nothing else.

To learn to forgive, we need to stay in constant contact with the Holy Spirit. We hold our mind open to His lessons in reality by making no judgments on our own. When we accept His judgment in place ours, our perceptions are transformed. Beyond the appearances of changing forms, loss, danger and pain is the real world of Love. In the real world, Love’s oneness lights our mind with joy and peace. The images of the world lose their attraction, for the beauty of Love draws us to It as we remember this is our real Home. Forgiveness is the way Home.

The Transforming Power of Miracles

A miracle is a correction. It does not create, nor really change at all. It merely looks on devastation, and reminds the mind that what it sees is false. It undoes error, but does not attempt to go beyond perception, nor exceed the function of forgiveness. Thus it stays within time’s limits. Yet it paves the way for the return of timelessness and love’s awakening, for fear must slip away under the gentle remedy it brings.

Forgiveness is the home of miracles. The eyes of Christ deliver [miracles] to all they look upon in mercy and in love. Perception stands corrected in His sight, and what was meant to curse has come to bless. Each lily of forgiveness offers all the world the silent miracle of love.

The miracle is taken first on faith, because to ask for it implies the mind has been made ready to conceive of what it cannot see and does not understand. Yet faith will bring its witnesses to show that what [faith] rested on is really there. And thus the miracle will justify your faith in it, and show [the miracle] rested on a world more real than what you saw before; a world redeemed from what you thought was there. The world we see is a false perception based upon the belief that we are separate from our Creator, separate from Love. The miracle corrects this perception through Christ’s vision, which sees with the forgiving eyes of Love. Love is one and does not condemn, so it sees everything as part of Itself, not separate.

The loving vision of Christ in our mind is the Home of miracles, for it sees only what is true. It disregards the false images of separation as meaningless. Our perception is transformed as the veil of separation is pulled aside to reveal the eternal presence of Love that never has been lost. To welcome this perception, we must have faith that there is a better way to see, a true perception of the world. With this faith our mind is open, willing to let the veil be lifted and welcome the brilliant Light of Love, where we are at Home in peace and joy.

Choosing the Voice for Love

When you have accepted your mission to extend peace you will find peace, for by making it manifest you will see it. Its holy witnesses will surround you because you called upon them, and they will come to you. I have heard your call and I have answered it, but you will not look upon me nor hear the answer that you sought. That is because you do not yet want only that. Yet as I become more real to you, you will learn that you do want only that. And you will see me as you look within, and we will look upon the real [of Love] world together. Through the eyes of Christ, only the real world exists and only the real world can be seen. As you decide so will you see. And all that you see but witnesses to your decision.

When you look within and see me, it will be because you have decided to manifest truth. And as you manifest it you will see it both without and within. You will see it without because you saw it first within. Everything you behold without is a judgment of what you beheld within. If it is your judgment it will be wrong, for judgment is not your function. If it is the judgment of the Holy Spirit it will be right, for judgment is His function. You share His function only by judging as He does, reserving no judgment at all for yourself. You will judge against yourself, but He will judge for you. (A Course in Miracles, T-12.VII.11-12. God created His Son, our true Self, to extend His Love and peace. That is our only function as His Son. When we choose the ego as our guide and identify with the image it made for what we are, we are denying our true function.

The ego is a death wish because it denies the Source of Life. It is not in our best interest to wish for death. But this wish leads us to believe that the ego’s world of illusions is real. We experience the consequences of this wish as guilt, fear, depression, sickness, insecurity and vulnerability. This is not a place where we can find lasting happiness and peace. The best the ego can offer is brief moments that we call pleasurable or happy. But the fact that they don’t last proves that they were nothing more than illusions.

The Holy Spirit is our true Self’s Voice in the ego world, speaking for our Creator to lead us to the truth of what we are. It is this Voice which we need to follow moment by moment, releasing all our judgments to it. This Voice of truth looks upon everything with a very simple judgment — unreal or real. What is judged unreal is disregarded as meaningless. What remains is the reality of Love, for nothing else exists. As we follow this Voice, we learn to see the Love of our true Self within. From this place within we see the reality of Love everywhere. We look upon a forgiven world, for Love does not condemn.

Accepting the Holy Spirit’s Gift

You can ask of the Holy Spirit, then, only by giving to Him, and you can give to Him only where you recognize Him. If you recognize Him in everyone, consider how much you will be asking of Him, and how much you will receive. [The Holy Spirit] will deny you nothing because you have denied Him nothing, and so you can share everything. This is the way, and the only way to have His answer, because His answer is all you can ask for and want. Say, then, to everyone:

Because I will to know myself, I see you as God’s Son and my brother. (A Course in Miracles, T-9.II.12. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The Holy Spirit is in our mind to remind us that our true Self is God’s Son. The Holy Spirit knows this unequivocally, so He sees only this Self in everyone. As we let the Holy Spirit guide all our thoughts and perceptions, we learn to recognize the Son of God in every brother and ourselves.

To remember our Self, we need to consistently give our thoughts to the Holy Spirit, moment by moment. The more consistent we are to this practice, the more we will recognize the Light of Love in our brothers and ourselves. Through the Holy Spirit’s gift of Christ’s vision, our brothers are recognized as friends who reflect the Love we are. We overlook what the body image appears to be and do because our attention is on the truth of What he is. He is reflecting back to us our one Self, the Son of God.

The Key to Teaching Only Love

The only safety lies in extending the Holy Spirit, because as you see His gentleness in others your own mind perceives itself as totally harmless. Once it can accept this fully, [your mind] sees no need to protect itself. The protection of God then dawns upon it, assuring it that it is perfectly safe forever. The perfectly safe are wholly benign. They bless because they know that they are blessed. Without anxiety the mind is wholly kind, and because it extends beneficence it is beneficent. Safety is the complete relinquishment of attack. No compromise is possible in this. Teach attack in any form and you have learned it, and it will hurt you. Yet this learning is not immortal, and you can unlearn it by not teaching it.

Since you cannot not teach, your salvation lies in teaching the exact opposite of everything the ego believes. This is how you will learn the truth that will set you free, and will keep you free as others learn it of you. The only way to have peace is to teach peace. By teaching peace you must learn it yourself, because you cannot teach what you still dissociate. Only thus can you win back the knowledge that you threw away. An idea that you share you must have. It awakens in your mind through the conviction of teaching it. Everything you teach you are learning. Teach only love, and learn that love is yours and you are love. The ego always teaches attack because it is the idea of attacking the oneness of Love. The Holy Spirit teaches that Love cannot be divided and therefore is perfectly safe eternally. The world we experience as a body is the result of choosing the ego as our Guide and believing in what it leads us to do.

The antidote to this self-deception is to choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide instead. It is a simple choice. It seems difficult only because we have taught ourselves that we are the ego’s false image of our identity. Choosing the Holy Spirit seems like it is choosing against our identity, which would mean the end of what we believe we are.

This is true, but what we gain when we choose to learn of the Holy Spirit is our true Identity as the Self God created one with Him. We give up an illusionary self that has no reality. We gain the memory that we are Love and nothing else, invincible and unchangeable, eternally kind, joyous, and living in peace that cannot be disrupted.

Today we practice following the Holy Spirit’s lead, moment by moment and learn to teach only love.
