The Holy Spirit Helps Us Teach Only Love

Your Godlike mind can never be defiled. The ego never was and never will be part of it, but through the ego you can hear and teach and learn what is not true. You have taught yourself to believe that you are not what you are. You cannot teach what you have not learned, and what you teach you strengthen in yourself because you are sharing it. Every lesson you teach you are learning.

That is why you must teach only one lesson. If you are to be conflict-free yourself, you must learn only from the Holy Spirit and teach only by Him. You are only love, but when you deny this, you make what you are something you must learn to remember. I said before that the message of the crucifixion was, “Teach only love, for that is what you are.” This is the one lesson that is perfectly unified, because it is the only lesson that is one. Only by teaching [Love] can you learn it. “As you teach so will you learn.” If that is true, and it is true indeed, do not forget that what you teach is teaching you. We have taught ourselves that our identity is a false image made by the ego. We see others as images of bodies made by the ego. This perception reinforces the lesson we have taught ourselves. That is why perceiving a brother as an image rather than limitless Love is an attack on our Self. This perception teaches us that we are not the Self that God created.

Fortunately we have the Holy Spirit, Who will teach us the truth about What we are if we will follow His lead. Each time we allow the Holy Spirit to replace our perceptions of separation with His vision of Love’s purity, we loosen the veil that has hidden our true Identity.

The Holy Spirit guides us on a journey of awakening. The ego would lead us into darker dreams of fear and guilt. When we allow the Holy Spirit to be our Guide moment by moment, we become an instrument of Love and learn that we are Love. This is how we teach only Love.

Forgiveness Ends the Dream of Separation

God is the only goal I have today.

The way to God is through forgiveness here. There is no other way. If sin [separation] had not been cherished by the mind, what need would there have been to find the way to where you are? Who would still be uncertain? Who could be unsure of who he is? And who would yet remain asleep, in heavy clouds of doubt about the holiness of him whom God created sinless? Here we can but dream. But we can dream we have forgiven him in whom all sin remains impossible, and it is this we choose to dream today. God is our goal; forgiveness is the means by which our minds return to Him at last.

And so, our Father, would we come to You in Your appointed way. We have no goal except to hear Your Voice, and find the way Your sacred Word has pointed out to us. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 256, W-pII.256. See also ACIM Lesson 256 Insights.)

Forgiveness is a dream with the sole purpose of ending the dream. That is why forgiveness is the means to achieve the goal of remembering God. Our true Self, Who has never left our Home in God, has no need to forgive. But the identity we have claimed in the dream of separation needs forgiveness. We need to let go of the wish for specialness. This wish makes us unaware that we already are at Home in God.

God has never left us, but we need to remember our unity with Him. When we remember God, we remember His peace is ours, His Love flows through us uninterrupted and He shares all His joy with us.

Today we will be vigilant to let the Holy Spirit teach us how to let go of our attachment to things of the world and remember our Creator.

Our Eternal Care Giver

Be in my mind, my Father, through the day.

Be in my mind, my Father, when I wake, and shine on me throughout the day today. Let every minute be a time in which I dwell with You. And let me not forget my hourly thanksgiving that You have remained with me, and always will be there to hear my call to You and answer me. As evening comes, let all my thoughts be still of You and of Your Love. And let me sleep sure of my safety, certain of Your care, and happily aware I am Your Son.

This is as every day should be. Today, practice the end of fear. Have faith in Him Who is your Father. Trust all things to Him. Let Him reveal all things to you, and be you undismayed be­cause you are His Son. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 232, W-pII.232. See also ACIM Lesson 232 Insights.)

We have an eternal Caregiver, Whose support is unwavering, never takes a break and surrounds us with the invincible protection of Love. Our safety and happiness are assured. The environment provided by this Caregiver is perfect Love. It is the ultimate in Home Care.

We rest in the certainty of perfect peace where there is never a thought of harm or loss, just the single thought of Love, extending without limit. Here we trust in our safety, for there is no force that can interfere with the care that keeps us eternally united with the Source of our Being. And we give thanks.

Being Faithful to Truth

The goal of illusion is as closely tied to faithlessness as faith to truth. If you lack faith in anyone to fulfill, and perfectly, his part in any situation dedicated in advance to truth, your dedication is divided. And so you have been faithless to your brother, and used your faithlessness against him. No relationship is holy unless its holiness goes with it everywhere. As holiness and faith go hand in hand, so must its faith go everywhere with it. [The reality of the goal of truth] will call forth and accomplish every miracle needed for its fulfillment. Nothing too small or too enormous, too weak or too compelling, but will be gently turned to [truth’s] use and purpose. The universe will serve it gladly, as it serves the universe. But do not interfere.

Yet think on this, and learn the cause of faithlessness: You think you hold against your brother what he has done to you. But what you really blame him for is what you did to him. It is not his past but yours you hold against him. And you lack faith in him because of what you were. Yet you are as innocent of what you were as he is. What never was is causeless, and is not there to interfere with truth. There is no cause for faithlessness, but there is Cause for faith. That Cause has entered any situation that shares Its purpose. The light of truth shines from the center of the situation, and touches everyone to whom the situation’s purpose calls. It calls to everyone. There is no situation that does not involve your whole relationship, in every aspect and complete in every part. You can leave nothing of yourself outside it and keep the situation holy. For it shares the purpose of your whole relationship, and derives its meaning from it.” (A Course in Miracles, T-17.VII.6;8. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego has no faith in the reality of Love’s oneness. It is the illusion that it is possible to be separate from Love. An illusion is not real. To believe in an illusion is to believe in nothing. And so it is faithlessness. 

Any problem in a relationship starts with our faithlessness in ourselves by perceiving ourselves as a body, a separate identity. We then see our brother as a body and are thus faithless to our brother. It is only in this faithlessness that problems appear to exist.

To be faithful to our Self, we must see ourselves as one with our Cause, the Love of God. From this point of faith, we have faith in our brother, for we see him as the Love he is. None of the things that we think we did as a separate identity really occurred or had any effect. As we learn to have faith in the truth of our oneness in Love, faithlessness fades. There never was a cause for separation. Truth’s reality lights our mind and the Light of Love shines on all that we see. In this Light, every relationship is holy.

The Holy Spirit’s Lessons in Life

The Holy Spirit’s use of memory is quite apart from time. He does not seek to use it as a means to keep the past, but rather as a way to let it go.

Only the past is held in memory as you make use of it, and so it is a way to hold the past against the now.

Remember nothing that you taught yourself, for you were badly taught. And who would keep a senseless lesson in his mind, when he can learn and can preserve a better one? When ancient memories of hate appear, remember that their cause is gone. …And see, instead, the new effects of cause accepted now, with consequences here. They will surprise you with their loveliness. The ancient new ideas they bring will be the happy consequences of a Cause so ancient that It far exceeds the span of memory which your perception sees.

This is the Cause the Holy Spirit has remembered for you, when you would forget. …It has never changed, because there never was a time in which He did not keep It safely in your mind. (A Course in Miracles, T-28.I.5:1-2;6:7;7:1-3,7-9;8:1,3. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego uses memory to hold illusions of the past in our mind. These illusions are used as the basis to interpret what we perceive in the present. This insures the ego’s continuity by keeping the choice for separation active. Separation would instantly disappear if the present weren’t covered over by the ego’s images of separation.

Beyond the past, which the ego hangs on to, is the memory of our Creation in the timelessness of eternal Love. It is this memory the Holy Spirit holds in our mind, insuring that we can never lose our eternal connection with our Cause. This is literally our lifeline, for it is the link to the Source of Life. This Life is not of the body. It is the Life that is changeless Love, continually extending Itself with Its joy and peace.

The Holy Spirit’s mission is to help us remember this ancient memory of our changelessness Reality. Our willingness to bring all our perceptions to Him for His reinterpretation welcomes His lessons in Life to replace the ego’s lessons of death.

We choose to welcome the Holy Spirit’s interpretations today.

Answering Heaven’s Call

Come home. …This world is not where you belong. You are a stranger here. But it is given you to find the means whereby the world no longer seems to be a prison house or jail for anyone.

Peace is the bridge that everyone will cross, to leave this world behind. But peace begins within the world perceived as differ­ent, and leading from this fresh perception to the gate of Heaven and the way beyond. Peace is the answer to conflicting goals, to senseless journeys, frantic, vain pursuits, and meaningless endeavors. Now the way is easy, sloping gently toward the bridge where freedom lies within the peace of God.

The peace of God is ours, and only this will we accept and want. Peace be to us today. For we have found a simple, happy way to leave the world of ambiguity, and to replace our shifting goals and solitary dreams with single purpose and companionship. To understand something is to know its true meaning. The images of the world cannot be understood because they are illusions with no meaning of their own. We make the images seem real by assigning meaning to them, but an assigned meaning can never be true. The world is chaotic because everyone assigns their own meaning to the world. Thankfully, this is not our true Home.

The Course tells us that peace and understanding come together and are never found alone. This is why peace is the bridge that leads us to the door of our true Home in Heaven, where all true meaning is. Only Love is real so all true meaning is Love.

When we quiet our minds and let ourselves rest in peace, the meaningless world fades so that we can see the eternal presence of Love. This Love calls to us, reminding us that we share the Will of Love. Our only function is to be Love by extending Love. This is Heaven, our Home.

Today let us join together to answer Heaven’s call by letting the Holy Spirit help us see with Christ’s vision the Love that is everywhere.

Forgiving Our Self Deception

The major difficulty that you find in genuine forgiveness on your part is that you still believe you must forgive the truth, and not illusions.

It is sin’s unreality that makes forgiveness natural and wholly sane, a deep relief to those who offer it; a quiet blessing where it is received. It does not countenance illusions, but collects them lightly, with a little laugh, and gently lays them at the feet of truth. And there they disappear entirely.

Forgiveness is the only thing that stands for truth in the illusions of the world. It sees [illusions’] nothingness, and looks straight through the thousand forms in which they may appear. It looks on lies, but it is not deceived.

The strength of [true] pardon is its honesty, which is so uncorrupted that it sees illusions as illusions, not as truth. It is because of this that it becomes the undeceiver in the face of lies; the great re­storer of the simple truth. By its ability to overlook what is not there, [forgiveness] opens up the way to truth, which has been blocked by dreams of guilt. Every day in the dream we are tempted to believe that what our body’s eyes show us is true and real. This belief makes true forgiveness impossible. While we hang on to this belief, it seems that forgiveness cannot be justified. We believe what we perceive really happened. This belief that must be undone to truly forgive. We must stop deceiving ourselves into believing illusions are real.

We are so identified with our individuality in the world — being separate and alone — that it seems accepting this is an illusion would mean the complete elimination of our identity. In fact it would be the elimination of the false identity sold to us by the ego.

But this elimination would reveal the glory of God’s Creation, His Son, Who shares all the attributes of his Creator. It would restore us from believing we nothing to accepting our true Self, the Son of God. There is no greater gift we can give ourselves than to let the Holy Spirit help us let go of our self-deception and remember that we remain Love, at one with all Love eternally.
