Knowing Our Brother as Our Self

To heal is to make happy. …The light that belongs to you is the light of joy. Radiance is not associated with sorrow. Joy calls forth an integrated willingness to share it, and promotes the mind’s natural impulse to respond as one.

There is no difference between love and joy. Therefore, the only possible whole state is the wholly joyous. To heal or to make joyous is therefore the same as to integrate and to make one.

You are being blessed by every beneficent thought of any of your brothers anywhere. You should want to bless them in return, out of gratitude. You need not know them individually, or they you. The light is so strong that it radiates throughout the Sonship and returns thanks to the Father for radiating His joy upon it. …It is impossible for a child of God to love his neighbor except as himself. That is why the healer’s prayer is:

We, united as God’s one Son, were created as Love by Love. The ego’s dedication to judgment denies our Love. As long as we participate in judgment, we do not know the Love we are. Consequently we cannot love our brother. We cannot give what we are not aware we have. Yet being unaware of Love does not mean we don’t have Love. As we forgive our judgments, we become aware of the presence of Love.

When we ask the Holy Spirit to help us forgive our fear-based thoughts, the Light of Love within us is allowed to shine forth. We experience and know this Light as our Self. It radiates to every brother and embraces all in its Oneness. We join together in joyous celebration of the Love we are.

Demonstrating for Love’s Freedom

I judge all things as I would have them be.

Judgment was made to be a weapon used against the truth. It separates what it is being used against, and sets it off as if it were a thing apart. And then it makes of it what you would have it be. It judges what it cannot understand, because it cannot see totality and therefore judges falsely. Let us not use it today, but make a gift of it to Him Who has a different use for it. He will relieve us of the agony of all the judgments we have made against ourselves, and re-establish peace of mind by giving us God’s Judgment of His Son.

Father, we wait with open mind today, to hear Your Judgment of the Son You love. We do not know him, and we cannot judge. And so we let Your Love decide what he whom You created as Your Son must be. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 311, W-pII.311. See also ACIM Lesson 311 Insights.)

Whenever we judge anyone or any situation in the world, we are actually judging ourselves. We could not see an external world if we had not already accepted the ego’s judgment that we are limited to a body, separate from our Creator. Our mistaken allegiance to the ego has put us in a dream where nothing appears as it is in truth. We see only false images that hide the eternal presence of Love from our awareness. Judgment is the ego’s tool to make these images appear real and impenetrable.

It is time to let go of judging anything on our own. Our self-imposed limitations make it impossible for us to judge truly. This is why the Course teaches us to ask of everything, “What is this for?” He will judge for us based on His certainty of the truth that we remain united in God’s Love. He knows that only Love is real. As we learn to accept the Holy Spirit’s judgment, which dismisses the images of the world as unreal, we free ourselves to accept the limitless Love God gave us as His Son.

Today we demonstrate for freedom by letting Love guide our thoughts, words and actions. By this practice we teach ourselves and the world of the reality of Love.

Remembering God Walks with Us

Today we will again give thanks for our Identity in God. Our home is safe, protection guaranteed in all we do, power and strength available to us in all our undertakings. We can fail in nothing. Everything we touch takes on a shining light that blesses and that heals. At one with God and with the universe we go our way rejoicing, with the thought that God Himself goes everywhere with us.

How holy are our minds! And everything we see reflects the holiness within the mind at one with God and with itself. How easily do errors disappear, and death give place to everlasting life. Our shining footprints point the way to truth, for God is our Companion as we walk the world a little while. And those who come to follow us will recognize the way because the light we carry stays behind, yet still remains with us as we walk on.

We feel Him in our hearts. Our minds contain His Thoughts; our eyes behold His loveliness in all we look upon. Today we see only the loving and the lovable. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 124, W-pI.124.1-2;4:4-6. See also ACIM Lesson 124 Insights.)

The true Self of everyone is Love. It sees only the loving and the lovable. This is the world we will see when we have forgiven the world for all our projections of fear and guilt.

The world reflects our beliefs back to us, showing us either Love or our calls for Love. If someone’s behavior upsets us, we are being shown a belief about what we are. We must be seeing a brother as a body, for his true Identity could only bring us joy. The upset is telling us we have a belief that needs to be forgiven. At its core, it is a belief in separation.

On our own, we do not know how to forgive this belief. We need help from beyond our mistaken belief system. This Help comes from God as His Voice in our mind. When we are willing to listen, it will teach us to see past our veil of false beliefs. We will learn that what we believe is disturbing us has no effect on What we are. We remain safe in God’s Love, our eternal Home. God walks with us in every moment, keeping us safe in His changeless Love.

Today we remind ourselves frequently: “God walks with me. His Love surrounds me and holds me in His peace. His Love flows through me to all I see. With the vision of Love, I see only the loving and lovable.”

Accepting the Miracle of Love

Today I let Christ’s vision look upon All things for me and judge them not, but give Each one a miracle of love instead.

So would I liberate all things I see, and give to them the freedom that I seek. For thus do I obey the law of love, and give what I would find and make my own. It will be given me, because I have chosen it as the gift I want to give. Father, Your gifts are mine. Each one that I accept gives me a miracle to give. And giving as I would receive, I learn Your healing miracles belong to me.

Our Father knows our needs. He gives us grace to meet them all. And so we trust in Him to send us miracles to bless the world, and heal our minds as we return to Him. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 349, W-pII.349)

When we judge, we deny Love because Love does not condemn. Believing a brother is a body is an attempt to limit God’s Son which denies the limitless Love He and our Self is.

But when we let go of judgment, we make way for Christ’s vision to show us the Love we and every brother are. Forgiveness releases judgment and lifts the veil to reveal the miracle of Love given and received. Our fractured mind is healed as we accept God’s gift of His Love.

Stepping Back from Ego Chatter

No call to God can be unheard nor left Unanswered. And of this I can be sure; His answer is the one I really want.

You Who remember what I really am alone remember what I really want. You speak for God, and so You speak for me. And what You give me comes from God Himself. Your Voice, my Father, then is mine as well, and all I want is what You offer me, in just the form You choose that it be mine. Let me remember all I do not know, and let my voice be still, remembering. But let me not forget Your Love and care, keeping Your promise to Your Son in my awareness always. Let me not forget myself is nothing, but my Self is all. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 358, W-pII.358. See also ACIM Lesson 358 Insights.)

We have two voices in our mind: One speaks for the ego, the other speaks for God. In every moment we choose which voice to listen to. The ego always speaks first to get our attention with its tempting appeals for judgment and guilt. Our well developed habit to listen to the ego’s constant judgmental chatter drowns out the quiet calm of God’s Voice, but does not eliminate It.

This ACIM lesson offers us a prayer to help us redirect our attention to what we really want. We want to experience the peace of God. We want to remember our safety in His Love. For this to happen, we need to remember that we do not know what anything means. But we have God’s Voice to teach us God’s meaning, which is the meaning of our true Self. His Voice is the Voice of our Self, our true Identity.

Today we choose to step back from the ego’s chatter, for we would remember our true Self.

Accelerating Our Return to Love

We stand together, Christ and I, in peace And certainty of purpose. And in Him Is His Creator, as He is in me.

My oneness with the Christ establishes me as Your Son, beyond the reach of time, and wholly free of every law but Yours. I have no self except the Christ in me. I have no purpose but His Own. And He is like His Father. Thus must I be one with You as well as Him. For who is Christ except Your Son as You created Him? And what am I except the Christ in me? God’s Law is that only Love is real. It is changeless, limitless and extends forever. This is our Reality as the Christ, God’s one Son.

The world we experience as a body is not real. It is a projection of the ego’s refusal to accept God’s Love given equally to all. We experience this world only because we have given our allegiance to the ego. We have accepted the ego’s image of a separate self that is not real.

The prayer in this lesson is worth memorizing. It can be repeated many times a day to remind ourselves of our true Identity. This prayer acknowledges the truth of What we are. Its acceptance will heal our minds of the ego’s mistaken beliefs about our reality. This practice will accelerate our journey of return to Love.

Forgiving the Belief in Separation

…bodies are but symbols for a concrete form of fear. Fear without symbols calls for no response, for symbols can stand for the meaningless. Love needs no symbols, being true. But fear attaches to specifics [symbols], being false.

Bodies attack, but minds do not. …This is the reason bodies easily become fear’s symbols.

Who sees a brother as a body sees him as fear’s symbol.

Select one brother, symbol of the rest, and ask salvation of him. See him first as clearly as you can, in that same form to which you are accustomed. See his face, his hands and feet, his clothing. Watch him smile, and see familiar gestures which he makes so frequently. Then think of this: What you are seeing now conceals from you the sight of one who can forgive you all your sins; …Ask this of him, that he may set you free:

Give me your blessing, holy Son of God. I would behold you with the eyes of Christ, and see my perfect sinlessness in you.

And He will answer Whom you called upon. For He [Christ] will hear the Voice for God in you, and answer in your own. Behold him now, whom you have seen as merely flesh and bone, and recog­nize that Christ has come to you. Today’s idea is your safe es­cape from anger and from fear. Be sure you use it instantly, should you be tempted to attack a brother and perceive in him the symbol of your fear. And you will see him suddenly transformed from enemy to savior; from the devil into Christ. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 161, W-pI.161.5:2-5;6:1,3;8:1;11-12. Our judgment of a brother depends upon perceiving Him as a body. We judge how the body looks, what it says or does. Without the body, there is nothing to judge. The truth in every brother is Love. Love has no form; it has no limits. Nothing is real except Love.

The exercise quoted above is directed to the part of our mind that believes separation and all its symbols are real. As we are willing to open our mind to Christ’s Vision in answer to our appeal for help, the Holy Spirit uses symbols to help us see past the limitations of the body.

We can only experience the blessings the Son of God offers us when we are willing to set aside our focus on the body. This willingness opens our mind to Christ’s vision, which shows us the reality of Love beyond the body form. As we accept Love’s reality, we experience Love’s blessing. Love’s peace and joy become more real to us, for we have forgiven the symbols of separation. We learn that we are all one in Love.
