Accepting Our Identity in God

I will not hurt myself again today.

Let us this day accept forgiveness as our only function. Why should we attack our minds, and give them images of pain? Why should we teach [our minds] they are powerless, when God holds out His power and His Love, and bids [our minds] take what is already theirs? The mind that is made willing to accept God’s gifts has been restored to spirit, and extends [the mind’s] freedom and its joy, as is the Will of God united with its own. The Self which God created cannot sin, and therefore cannot suffer. Let us choose today that [this Self] be our Identity, and thus escape forever from all things the dream of fear appears to offer us.

Father, Your Son can not be hurt. And if we think we suffer, we but fail to know our one Identity we share with You. We would return to It today, to be made free forever from all our mistakes, and to be saved from what we thought we were. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 330, W-pII.330. We believe we are powerless and vulnerable to outside forces which we cannot control. This is because we have accepted the ego’s definition of our identity — separate and powerless. Yet our true Mind is an extension of God’s Mind and shares all His power because it is His Will to share It.

The ego thinks it has a “better” idea, offering us a special something we can call our own, separate from everything else. But God’s Will is that we have everything He Is. Nothing else is real. The only way we can seem to have something of our own is in a dream.

Today we choose to no longer hurt ourselves by accepting our one Self as God’s Identity instead of the ego as our identity. We choose to let the Holy Spirit show us this one Self in every brother and learn the truth of our own Identity. In gratitude we accept the Holy Spirit’s help.

Freeing Ourselves from the Tyranny of Opinions

Today I will judge nothing that occurs.

I will be honest with myself today. I will not think that I already know what must remain beyond my present grasp. I will not think I understand the whole from bits of my perception, which are all that I can see. Today I recognize that this is so. And so I am relieved of judgments that I cannot make. Thus do I free myself and what I look upon, to be in peace as God created us.

Father, today I leave creation free to be itself. I honor all its parts, in which I am included. We are one because each part contains Your mem­ory, and truth must shine in all of us as one. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 243, W-pII.243. See also ACIM Lesson 243 Insights.)

Having an opinion about anything in the world is hazardous to our health. Opinions are judgments. We like some things and dislike others. This could only be because we perceive them as different. Differences can only seem to occur in the dream of separation. Opinions keep us engaged in the dream.

Our safety lies in the truth of What we are. We are one, indivisible Love, united with our Creator. In this oneness we are invulnerable, for Love does not change. It can neither harm nor be harmed. This is our natural state. The practice of turning over all our opinions, our judgments, to the Holy Spirit to let Him purify them frees us from the ego’s world of fear and guilt. It restores us to the joy and peace of our Home in God.

Today we would keep no opinions to ourself alone. We choose the Holy Spirit’s vision instead.

We Are Forever in the Heart of God

Fear is not justified in any form.

Fear is deception. It attests that you have seen yourself as you could never be, and therefore look upon a world which is impos­sible. Not one thing in this world is true. It does not matter what the form in which it may appear. It witnesses but to your own illusions of yourself. Let us not be deceived today. We are the Sons of God. There is no fear in us, for we are each a part of Love Itself.

How foolish are our fears! Would You allow Your Son to suffer? Give us faith today to recognize Your Son, and set him free. Let us forgive him in Your Name, that we may understand his holiness, and feel the love for him which is Your Own as well. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 240, W-pII.240. We’ve all experienced being startled by an unfamiliar sound and instantly shifting into self-protection mode. Seconds later we learn that it was nothing to be concerned about, there was no potential harm to protect against.

The fear we experience in the world has no more substance to it than a meaningless noise which can do no harm. Fear comes only from believing in a vulnerable identity. To be free of fear we need only let go of our belief in a false identity that could never be true. The truth of What we are is forever safe in God’s changeless Love.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to heal our minds of the fearful thoughts that come from believing in a false identity. He will help us remember we are God’s Son, complete and whole, forever in the Heart of God.

Claiming Our Inheritance

How can I know who I am when I see myself as under constant attack? Pain, illness, loss, age and death seem to threaten me. All my hopes and wishes and plans appear to be at the mercy of a world I cannot control. Yet perfect security and complete fulfillment are my inheritance.

Recognizing that what I see reflects what I think I am, I realize that vision is my greatest need. The world I see attests to the fearful nature of the self-image I have made. If I would remember who I am, it is essential that I let this image of myself go. As it is replaced by truth, vision will surely be given me. And with this vision, I will look upon the world and on myself with charity and love.

I would let the door behind this world be opened for me, that I may look past it to the world that reflects the Love of God. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 56, W-pI.56.1:2-5;2:2-6;3:4. See also ACIM Lesson 56 Insights.)

While we believe we are in the world, we cannot see the truth without help. By the grace of God, the Help we need is already in our mind. But we must accept this Help. The Holy Spirit continuously offers us His vision of truth.

We welcome His vision by turning over all our perceptions to Him to be purified. He will show us the unity of Love behind the appearances we thought were real. This practice helps open the door to the truth beyond this world of illusions. It is a practice that allows the Holy Spirit to heal our fearful thoughts return us to the awareness of the Love we are.

The Answer to Our Only Need

Remember that the Holy Spirit is the Communication Link between God the Father and His separated Sons. If you will listen to His Voice you will know that you cannot either hurt or be hurt, and that many need your blessing to help them hear this for themselves. When you perceive only this need in them, and do not respond to any other, you will have learned of me and will be as eager to share your learning as I am.

The Holy Spirit begins by perceiving you as perfect. Knowing this perfection is shared He recognizes it in others, thus strengthening it in both. Instead of anger this arouses love for both, because it establishes inclusion. Perceiving equality, the Holy Spirit perceives equal needs. This invites Atonement [perfect Love] automatically, because Atonement is the one need in this world that is universal. To perceive yourself this way is the only way in which you can find happiness in the world. That is because it is the acknowledgment that you are not in this world, for the world is unhappy. The only need anyone in the world has is for God’s perfect Love. Every distress, apprehension, loneliness or guilt comes from the belief in lack of Love. But lack of Love is only possible in a dream that denies Love. A dream is not real. To awaken from this dream we need to welcome perfect Love by forgiving the ego’s denial of Love. By letting the Holy Spirit guide our perception, we perceive the eternal presence of Love beyond the manifestations of ego’s denial.

As we choose the Holy Spirit’s vision, we offer perfect Love, the Atonement, to our brother in answer to his only true need. As we offer it, we accept it in ourselves. When we bless, we are blessed. Let us join with the Holy Spirit today to offer Love’s blessing to our brothers and learn that we are blessed.

Becoming Aware of Our Oneness in Love

The forgetting of dreams and the awareness of Christ come with the awakening of others to share your redemption.

Do not set limits on what you believe I can do through you, or you will not accept what I can do for you.

God’s Son is saved. Bring only this awareness to the Sonship, and you will have a part in the redemption as valuable as mine. …There is no order of difficulty in miracles because all of God’s Sons are of equal value, and their equality is their oneness. The whole power of God is in every part of Him [all God’s Sons], and nothing contradictory to His Will is either great or small. What does not exist has no size and no measure. To God all things are possible. And to Christ it is given to be like the Father. (A Course in Miracles, T-11.VI.8:8;9:4;10:1-3,4-9. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Being able to give something begins with having it. We can give miracles (extensions of Love) because we already have God’s Love, given us in our creation. We demonstrate to ourselves that we have God’s Love by sharing it.

But when we subscribe to the ego belief in lack of Love, we don’t know we already have and are all the Love we need. The sense of lack sends us on a futile search for Love in the world, where it cannot be found. We try to fill the emptiness with special relationships, possessions, status and myriad other forms which cannot satisfy because they are not real.

We can restore our awareness that we are eternally safe in God’s Love by letting the Holy Spirit teach us to see beyond the illusions of the world with Christ’s vision. Each time a judgment given to Him is healed, our awareness of our oneness with every brother is strengthened. The sense of separation and loneliness diminishes as we see more clearly that Christ is in every brother and ourselves. We learn that we are all one in Love.

Finding Our Safety in God

Let me perceive no differences today.

Father, You have one Son. And it is he that I would look upon today. He is Your one creation. Why should I perceive a thousand forms in what remains as one? Why should I give this one a thousand names, when only one suffices? For Your Son must bear Your Name, for You created him. Let me not see him as a stranger to his Father, nor as stranger to myself. For he is part of me and I of him, and we are part of You Who are our Source, eternally united in Your Love; eternally the holy Son of God.

We who are one would recognize this day the truth about ourselves. We would come home, and rest in unity. For [at Home in Unity] is peace, and nowhere else can peace be sought and found. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 262, W-pII.262. See also ACIM Lesson 262 Insights.)

Perception of differences — bodies, all forms, even different, private thoughts — is a sure sign we have chosen the ego as our identity and guide. Choosing our Identity as the Son of God means we choose His oneness, His perfect, changeless Love, His peace and His joy. There can be no conflict in His unity, for there is nothing different within what is one.

In this world we have accepted the dream of separation as real. We blinded ourselves to the presence of Love’s unity. We need the help of the Holy Spirit, Who does not believe in our dream of separation, to help us awaken to our Identity in God. He is with us in every moment, ready to show us the truth beyond the loveless dream of fear and guilt. We have sought refuge in illusions of defense and safety that do not work.

Today we open our hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit’s kind and gentle lessons which lead us to our true Safety, our Home in God. With His help, our mistaken perceptions are transformed and we see the safety of Love which surrounds us. And we give thanks.
