Welcoming Holy Spirit’s Healing Lessons

The Son of God has both Father and Son, because he is both Father and Son. To unite having and being is to unite your will with His, for He wills you Himself. And you will yourself to Him because, in your perfect understanding of Him, you know there is but one Will. Yet when you attack any part of God and His Kingdom your understanding is not perfect, and what you really want is therefore lost to you.

Healing thus becomes a lesson in understanding, and the more you practice it the better teacher and learner you become.… Every healing thought that you accept, either from your brother or in your own mind, teaches you that you are God’s Son. In every hurtful thought you hold, wherever you perceive it, lies the denial of God’s Fatherhood and of your Sonship.

Healing is a sign that you want to make whole. And this willingness opens your ears to the Voice of the Holy Spirit, Whose message is wholeness. He will enable you to go far beyond the healing you would undertake, for beside your small willingness to make whole He will lay His Own complete Will and make yours whole. Every thought stemming from belief in separation is an attack on the Son of God. We cannot know or understand the Self that is God’s Son while we believe we are a separate identity housed in a body. This is a belief in a false image. In many ways the Course tells us not to mistake the body for the Son of God.

The Holy Spirit is always ready to help us learn that we are not a body and remain whole as God’s Son. But we must welcome His lessons. We do not have to be certain that we want the Holy Spirit’s lesson. But we must be willing to invite Him in. To that little willingness, the Holy Spirit adds His total willingness to make us whole. Just be willing to let our mistaken thoughts be healed and God’s teacher will show us the truth of What we are. We will learn to see our oneness with our brother. We will realize that we want to be truly helpful to every brother, for that is how we both heal.

Today we welcome Holy Spirit’s lessons in wholeness that we may heal and be healed.

Learning Forgiveness from the Holy Spirit

How holy am I, who have been given the function of lighting up the world! Let me be still before my holiness. In its calm light let all my conflicts disappear. In its peace let me remember Who I am.

Some specific forms for applying this idea when special difficulties seem to arise might be:

Let me not obscure the light of the world in me.
Let the light of the world shine through this appearance.
This shadow will vanish before the light.

Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world. It is through accepting my function that I will see the light in me. And in this light will my function stand clear and perfectly unambiguous before my sight. My acceptance does not depend on my recognizing what my function is, for I do not yet understand forgiveness. Yet I will trust that, in the light, I will see it as it is.

Specific forms for using this idea might include:

Let this help me learn what forgiveness means.
Let me not separate my function from my will.

What is forgiveness? The ego’s version is to first decide that something wrong really happened. Through our belief, what appeared to happen is real. Then we must be generous and tell ourselves that seemed to happen is okay so we will be magnanimous and “forgive” it. Yet we still believe that what we “forgave” really happened.

A sign that that the ego’s “forgiveness” didn’t work is, if what we believe happened occurs again and maybe again and again, we react in the same way with anger, fear or guilt. We might say to ourselves, “That’s the third time!” If we have been counting, we haven’t truly forgiven.

The Holy Spirit has a different definition of forgiveness which we must learn if we would heal and remember Who we truly are. If we are willing to learn the Holy Spirit’s lesson, we must be willing to let Him show us His way of seeing what we believe happened. His Light will show us that what we thought harmed us or another had no effect on our true Self.

God’s Son can neither harm nor be harmed. The ego is incapable of showing us this. We must bring our anger, fear or guilt to the Holy Spirit to let Him help us see truly. With His vision, we will have certainty that nothing happened to harm or be harmed. With His vision, the pain of unforgiveness will be replaced with peace. It is this process that is our function as the Light of the world.

Forgiveness Guarantees Happiness

All false humility we lay aside today, that we may listen to God’s Voice reveal to us what He would have us do. We do not doubt our adequacy for the function He will offer us. We will be certain only that He knows our strengths, our wisdom and our holiness. And if He deems us worthy, so we are. It is but arrogance that judges otherwise.

His gentle Voice is calling from the known to the unknowing. He would comfort you, although He knows no sorrow. He would make a restitution, though He is complete; a gift to you, although He knows that you have everything already. He has Thoughts which answer every need His Son perceives, although He sees them not. For Love must give, and what is given in His Name takes on the form most useful in a world of form.

These are the forms which never can deceive, because they come from Formlessness Itself. Forgiveness is an earthly form of love, which as it is in Heaven has no form. Yet what is needed here is given here as it is needed. In this form you can fulfill your function even here, although what love will mean to you when formlessness has been restored to you is greater still. Salvation of the world depends on you who can forgive. Such is your function here. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 186, W-pI.186.4;13;14. See also ACIM Lesson 186 Insights.)

Forgiveness is our only function given us by God in His plan for our salvation. Fulfilling this function guarantees a happy outcome, for it takes away the barriers to Love’s presence.

As we are willing to welcome God’s Voice, He will teach us how to see past the images of guilt and fear to help us recognize that nothing can happen to change the truth of What we are as God’s one Son. God’s Son can neither harm nor be harmed because Love is wholly harmless. This is what God created us to be.

Today we practice bringing everything that disturbs our peace of mind to the Voice for God, willing to receive His gentle correction. Thus will we do our part in God’s plan for salvation.

Accepting Holy Spirit’s Gift of Peace

Before a holy relationship there is no sin. The form of error is no longer seen, and reason, joined with love, looks quietly on all confusion, observing merely, “This was a mistake.” And then the same Atonement you accepted in your relationship corrects the error, and lays a part of Heaven in its place. How blessed are you who let this gift be given! Each part of Heaven that you bring is given you. And every empty place in Heaven that you fill again with the eternal light you bring, shines now on you. The means of sinlessness can know no fear because they carry only love with them.

Child of peace, the light has come to you. The light you bring you do not recognize, and yet you will remember. Who can deny himself the vision that he brings to others? And who would fail to recognize a gift he let be laid in Heaven through himself? The gentle service that you give the Holy Spirit is service to yourself. You who are now His means must love all that He loves. And what you bring is your remembrance of everything that is eternal. No trace of anything in time can long remain in a mind that serves the timeless. And no illusion can disturb the peace of a relationship that has become the means of peace. The Holy Spirit’s purpose is to lead our minds to the recognition that we remain unchanged as God created us. We serve the Holy Spirit’s purpose by letting the Holy Spirit help us forgive our thoughts of separation, guilt and fear. Each time we accept His help we let the brilliant Light of Heaven into our minds. The Light of Heaven shines ever more brightly each time we let go of a barrier to the awareness of Love’s presence. Love is everywhere to be seen. We need only let go of mistaken beliefs that hide it from our vision.

The holy relationship, dedicated to forgiveness, is the classroom for the Holy Spirit’s lessons. It is how we learn to open to His gifts of freedom and peace. We accept these gifts as we share them with our brother. For it is in the sharing that we learn that they belong to us.

Today we practice bringing all our guilty, fearful and judgmental thoughts to the Holy Spirit for His loving correction.

Gratitude Is a Blessing Magnet

Walk, then, in gratitude the way of love. For hatred is forgotten when we lay comparisons aside. What more remains as obstacles to peace? The fear of God is now undone at last, and we forgive without comparing. Thus we cannot choose to overlook some things, and yet retain some other things still locked away as “sins.” When your forgiveness is complete you will have total gratitude, for you will see that everything has earned the right to love by being loving, even as your Self.

Our gratitude will pave the way to Him, and shorten our learning time by more than you could ever dream of. Gratitude goes hand in hand with love, and where one is the other must be found. For gratitude is but an aspect of the Love which is the Source of all creation. God gives thanks to you, His Son, for being what you are; His Own completion and the Source of love, along with Him. Your gratitude to Him is one with His to you. For love can walk no road except the way of gratitude, and thus we go who walk the way to God. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 195, W-pI.195.8;10. Gratitude is a blessing magnet. Our gratitude naturally motivates us to seek more of what we are grateful for.

Everyone in the world is seeking for Love because the world is a place of denying Love. Consequently, seeking for Love in the world is a guaranteed dead end. It can only lead to frustration and disappointment. Sooner or later we get the message: There must be a better way. The “better way” is to forgive the images of the world, to let them go. For the Love we seek is already in us. It is the Truth of What we are.

As we open up to the Love that is everywhere to be perceived through forgiveness, our peace and happiness increases. This motivates us to practice forgiveness more. True forgiveness is guaranteed to make way for the awareness of Love’s presence. And with this awareness comes happiness and peace. Gratitude brings us everything we want.

Accepting Love as Our Identity

Let not my mind deny the Thought of God. God is but Love, and therefore so am I.

I am entrusted with the gifts of God. God is but Love, and therefore so am I. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 178, W-pI.178. See also ACIM Lesson 178 Insights.)

God is only Love and so His Thoughts are only Love. God’s Son is His Thought, which extends His Love. God’s Son and our true Self are one and the same. To deny the Thought of God is to deny our Self and God’s gifts of peace and joy. The Thought of God, of Love, is one and cannot be divided.

When we choose to believe that separation is real, we are denying the Thought of God. We are denying Love. The body, the ego’s principal mechanism of separation, is not our identity. We are not a body. We are Love and nothing else. Identifying with a body denies God’s Love.

This is why the only meaningful purpose for the body is to use it to learn to see past the forms of the world. In our day to day life experience, we have opportunities to choose between our limited perception or to welcome Holy Spirit’s perception. When we welcome Holy Spirit’s perception, the body becomes the means for awakening. We learn to see with our true Mind’s eye. This is our purpose in every moment.

Holy Spirit, today we welcome Your vision. We take Your hand, willing to be guided in the way of Love.

Receiving the Experience of God’s Gift of Love

Healing is freedom. For it demonstrates that dreams will not prevail against the truth. Healing is shared. And by this attribute it proves that laws unlike the ones which hold that sickness is inevitable are more potent than their sickly opposites. Healing is strength. For by its gentle hand is weakness overcome, and minds that were walled off within a body free to join with other minds, to be forever strong.

Healing, forgiveness, and the glad exchange of all the world of sorrow for a world where sadness cannot enter, are the means by which the Holy Spirit urges you to follow Him. His gentle lessons teach how easily salvation can be yours; how little practice you need undertake to let His laws replace the ones you made to hold yourself a prisoner to death. His life becomes your own, as you extend the little help He asks in freeing you from everything that ever caused you pain. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 137, W-pI.137.8-9. We are sane when we accept the truth of what is real and disregard everything that is unreal. We are told that only Love is real. Our sane mind accepts the reality of Love and sees nothing else.

The ego is the attempt to wall off a tiny part of the mind in an illusion that seems to maintain a world of separation and fear. In this world the reality of Love is unknown and cannot be seen. Having totally embraced the illusion of separation, the ego is wholly insane, for it does not recognize the unreality of illusions. Instead it defends illusions with all its might because the loss of illusions would mean the end of the ego.

The seeming strength of the ego comes only from our belief in it. When we accept the ego thought system, the unity of Love becomes unknown to us for we have stepped into insanity, which maintains illusions through judgment, guilt and fear. Yet this tiny fragment of a mind which believes it is everything remains connected with the truth through the Voice for God.

Whenever we reach a point of deciding there must be a better way, we can turn to the Voice for God for help to find our way past the wall of illusion. His Voice will teach us to see the Love beyond the form. It will teach us to offer Love in response to calls for Love. And as we learn these happy lessons, we free ourselves from the limitations of belief in separation. We experience the blessing of God’s gift of Love.
