Welcoming Holy Spirit’s Lessons in Love

The lessons to be learned are only two. Each has its outcome in a different world. And each world follows surely from its source. The certain outcome of the lesson that God’s Son is guilty is the world you see. It is a world of terror and despair. Nor is there hope of happiness in it. There is no plan for safety you can make that ever will succeed. There is no joy that you can seek for here and hope to find. Yet this is not the only outcome which your learning can produce. However much you may have overlearned your chosen task, the lesson that reflects the Love of God is stronger still. And you will learn God’s Son is innocent, and see another world.

The outcome of the lesson that God’s Son is guiltless is a world in which there is no fear, and everything is lit with hope and sparkles with a gentle friendliness. Nothing but calls to you in soft appeal to be your friend, and let it join with you. …The soft eternal calling of each part of God’s creation to the whole is heard throughout the world this second lesson brings.” (A Course in Miracles, T-31.I.7;8:1-2,8. The world we see is the effect of learning the ego’s lesson that we are guilty. It is a world where fear is a constant companion and peace is impossible.

The Holy Spirit’s lesson teaches us that we are still God’s one Son, complete, whole and innocent. It teaches us that there is nothing to fear, for only Love is real. Peace is our natural state as God’s one, innocent Son.

The Holy Spirit offers us this lesson every moment of every day. We receive this lesson by offering all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit with willingness to show us the true perception of Love. His lessons will show us that everyone is our brother and friend, beyond the behavior of the body. Holy Spirit’s lesson teaches us that no one is a body and the truth beyond the body is innocent Love and nothing else. Today we welcome Holy Spirit’s lessons in Love.

Accepting Reality as It Is

Determine now to see all …people as friends. Say to them all, thinking of each one in turn as you do so:

I would see you as my friend, that I may remember you
are part of me and come to know myself.

Spend the remainder of the practice period trying to think of yourself as completely at peace with everyone and everything, safe in a world that protects you and loves you, and that you love in return. Try to feel safety surrounding you, hovering over you and holding you up. Try to believe, however briefly, that nothing can harm you in any way. At the end of the practice period tell yourself:

Love holds no grievances. When I let all my grievances
go I will know I am perfectly safe.

I would wake to my Self by laying all my grievances aside and wakening in Him. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 68, W-pI.68.6;7:6. See also ACIM Lesson 68 Insights.)

The Truth in everyone is our best friend forever because It is our one Self. When we have a grievance toward anyone or anything, it is because we are perceiving a false image that hides the Truth of our universal Oneness. If all that is real is one, there is no possibility of conflict or harm because there is no “other” in what is One.

The perception of danger, harm, loss, fear or guilt can only come from the belief that separation is real. Yet separation is not God’s Will and therefore cannot be real. As we learn to forgive the false images and beliefs, the Light of Love’s oneness shines through the shadows of false beliefs.

When we try to imagine what it would feel like to be perfectly safe all the time, we are trying to imagine what it would be like to let go of everything that is false and remember only Truth. This is not fantasy. This is accepting Reality as It is.

Today we practice bringing our grievances to the Holy Spirit to receive His help to let them go.

Finding the True Answer to Problems

The holy instant is the interval in which the mind is still enough to hear an answer that is not entailed within the question asked. It offers something new and different from the question.

Therefore, attempt to solve no problems in a world from which the answer has been barred. But bring the problem to the only place that holds the answer lovingly for you. Here are the answers that will solve your problems because [the answers] stand apart from [the problems], and see what can be answered; what the question is. Within the world the answers merely raise another question, though they leave the first unanswered. In the holy instant, you can bring the question to the answer, and receive the answer that was made for you. (A Course in Miracles, T-27.IV.6:9-10;7. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Much of the Course is teaching us that on our own we have no clue as to what the cause of our problems really is. We need Help from beyond the thought system of separation we are enmeshed in. Ultimately the belief in separation is the cause of all problems. It’s fruitless to ask the cause of problems to solve problems. Yet this is exactly what we are doing when we try to figure out solutions on our own.

To free ourselves from the limitations of belief in separation, we need to open our minds to Help from outside the separation box. The Holy Spirit is that Help. We open our minds to receive His answer that will truly heal by letting our minds be still. The practice of taking time each day to let ourselves sink deeply into peace opens the door to the answers that are truly helpful. Peace and understanding always come together.

For minds accustomed to focusing on the world, becoming quiet seems difficult at first. But we are trainable. We have learned to make a world of chaos where peace is shut out. We can just as well learn to open our minds to the peace that is our natural state. It requires practice and vigilance. But we are worthy of the effort. It is the way we remember the oneness of our true Self.

Let the Light of Love Dawn Upon Our Minds

How holy am I, who have been given the function of lighting up the world! Let me be still before my holiness. In its calm light let all my conflicts disappear. In its peace let me remember Who I am.

Let me not obscure the light of the world in me.
Let the light of the world shine through this appearance.
This shadow will vanish before the light.

My forgiveness is the means by which the light of the world finds expression through me. My forgiveness is the means by which I become aware of the light of the world in me. My forgiveness is the means by which the world is healed, together with myself. Let me, then, forgive the world, that it may be healed along with me. Like the sun brings light to the world at dawn, forgiveness lets Love’s Light dawn in our minds. When we let this Light in, it shines away the shadows of our thoughts of separation like the sun at dawn shines away the shadow of the earth.

Each time we forgive a mistaken belief, the shadow of what we believed was true dissipates in the Light of Love. We no longer need to live in the darkness of hate, fear and guilt. We have the means to rise above it and let the Light of Love shine in our minds to show us the truth that we all remain God’s one Son at Home in God.

Today we choose to welcome the Light that brings us true happiness and peace by choosing to forgive the world.

We Welcome God’s Answer

If you but knew the meaning of His Love, hope and despair would be impossible. For hope would be forever satisfied; despair of any kind unthinkable. His grace is His answer to all despair, for in [His grace] lies remembrance of His Love. Would He not gladly give the means by which His Will is recognized? His grace is yours by your acknowledgment. And memory of Him awakens in the mind that asks the means of Him whereby its sleep is done.

His gift of grace is more than just an answer. It restores all memories the sleeping mind forgot; all certainty of what Love’s meaning is.

God loves His Son. Request Him now to give the means by which this world will disappear, and vision first will come, with knowledge but an instant later. For in grace you see a light that covers all the world in love, and watch fear disappear from every face as hearts rise up and claim the light as theirs. {A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 168, W-pI.168.2;3:5-4:3. The Holy Spirit is the means God gave us to restore our sleeping minds to the full awareness of God’s Presence. When we are willing to turn to the Holy Spirit to receive His perception in place of ours, He shines the Light of Love on what we perceive, dissipating the shadows of fear and guilt. For Love is the opposite of fear and sees only innocence.

Today we welcome God’s Answer to our sleep, for we would waken to our one Self Which is God’s Son.

Our Journey of Awakening

Why would you not be overjoyed to be assured that all the evil that you think you did was never done, that all your sins are nothing, that you are as pure and holy as you were created, and that light and joy and peace abide in you? Your image of yourself cannot withstand the Will of God. You think that this is death, but it is life. You think you are destroyed, but you are saved.

The self you made is not the Son of God. Therefore, this self does not exist at all. And anything it seems to do and think means nothing. It is neither bad nor good. It is unreal, and nothing more than that. It does not battle with the Son of God. It does not hurt him, nor attack his peace. It has not changed creation, nor reduced eternal sinlessness to sin, and love to hate. What power can this self you made possess, when it would contradict the Will of God?

Salvation requires the acceptance of but one thought;—you are as God created you, not what you made of yourself.… You are and will forever be exactly as you were created. We are afraid of God’s Will because we believe we are in opposition to God when we identify with the Self the ego made. The ego is the denial of God. Because God’s Love is all that is real, anything made by the denial of God must be unreal, a fantasy. Our experience as a body in a world of form is pure fantasy and therefore not real.

By the grace of God, we are not stuck in this fearful fantasy without a way out. The moment we accepted the idea of separation, God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us out of the hell we believe we are in. Let us accept this Help today by bringing all our fearful, guilty thoughts to the Holy Spirit to receive His help in releasing them. He will help us see these thoughts are based on nothing so we can freely let them go. This is our journey of awakening.

How to Have a Year of Joy

No evidence will convince you of the truth of what you do not want. Yet your relationship with [the Holy Spirit] is real. Regard this not with fear, but with rejoicing. The One you called upon is with you. Bid Him welcome, and honor the witnesses who bring you the glad tidings He has come. It is true, just as you fear, that to acknowledge Him is to deny all that you think you know. But what you think you know was never true. What gain is there to you in clinging to it, and denying the evidence for truth? For you have come too near to truth to renounce it now, and you will yield to its compelling attraction. You can delay this now, but only a little while. The Host of God has called to you, and you have heard. Never again will you be wholly willing not to listen.

This is a year of joy, in which your listening will increase and peace will grow with its increase. The power of holiness and the weakness of attack are both being brought into your awareness. And this has been accomplished in a mind firmly convinced that holiness is weakness and attack is power. Should not this be a sufficient miracle to teach you that your Teacher is not of you? But remember also that whenever you listened to His interpretation the results have brought you joy. Would you prefer the results of your interpretation, considering honestly what they have been? God wills you better. Could you not look with greater charity on whom God loves with perfect Love?” (A Course in Miracles, T-16.II.6-7. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Every interpretation made with the ego is guaranteed to reinforce fear and guilt, for it is an interpretation made without Love. Every interpretation made with the Holy Spirit is guaranteed to bring peace and joy, for it is an interpretation made with Love.

This should be enough to motivate us to interpret everything with the Holy Spirit. Yet most of us are still tempted daily to choose the ego’s interpretations. This is because we are still confused about what will bring us happiness and peace. We think if someone else behaved differently, if our circumstances were different, if we had more money or a special relationship we would be happy.

Clearly we need to be taught where true and eternal happiness and peace can be found. Each time we follow the Holy Spirit’s interpretation, we experience more joy and greater peace. This is how we learn the Holy Spirit’s lessons in forgiveness. The increased joy and peace we feel becomes motivation to pay more attention to the Holy Spirit and less to the ego. We are more inclined to lay aside the illusions of the ego and accept the reality of our true Self as Love. This is how we move from hell to Heaven, our Home in God.
