New Beatitudes for a New Time

Rev. Annie Arbona

imageBlessed are they who want to be happy because happiness is already theirs!

Blessed are they who want to be divinely cared for because they have always been!

For me the word blessed has been a very fascinating and comforting word, and I have always loved the Beatitudes. According to the dictionary the word blessed means ”to confer happiness upon,” or “to invoke divine care for.”

After I read this, the word became even more meaningful. So when we bless, or call something blessed, we are actually bestowing happiness upon them, and we are calling forth divine care for them, or even better yet, acknowledging that they have it. The action of blessing multiplies what it signifies. What a wonderful and beautiful offering!

In Spanish, the verb to bless is “bendecir,” and that means to speak goodness. “Bien” means good and “decir “means to say. So no matter how you look at it, when we bless or recognize that someone is blessed, we are expressing and gifting them with our highest wishes and thoughts.

When I realized that to bless was to acknowledge goodness in everyone and everything, it became one of my favorite practices. I noticed that when I blessed, first of all I felt very blessed myself, and also I could feel the goodness of all things making itself much more visible and real to me. I also noticed that the action of blessing had a transformative effect. I saw people and situations becoming more harmonious and light filled. Blessing and realizing that we are very blessed, keeps our mind on Heaven, and definitely HEAVEN IS WHERE OUR MINDS ABIDE.

Blessed are we who share in God’s Happiness and are always so perfectly cared for, for we are enjoying the gifts of Heaven!

Blessed are we who are an expression of God’s Goodness because we are eternally being embraced by Love! Could we really lack anything or be limited by anything when we are God’s innocent and Holy Children? We are indeed very blessed and have been given the power to bless and make happy. It is definitely God’s power in us.

Reminiscing with Jesus in My Garden

Rev. Sharyn Zenz

imageAs I sit quietly today and go to my garden, I see a horn of plenty in the center of my garden and all around it are beautiful rows of lush green plants. As I sit on my bench looking at this beauty, Jesus sits beside me and tells me that the horn of plenty is to remind me of all the bounty and abundance I have had this past year.

It is huge and overflowing. And all the rows of lush green plants are the gratitude seeds I planted throughout the year. Jesus says, “Go down each row and pick something from each plant to be grateful for.” So as I go up to each plant and pick a beautiful flower from it or a green branch for my bouquet, I am told what each one represents.

As I went to my rose bushes and picked a long stem, Jesus reminded me of the beauty that I am. And then as I select a beautiful rose from the next bush I am told, “Everyone and everything that has happened in your life this past year is as beautiful as this rose, even though at the time it may have seemed like such sorrow or pain!”

Then as I go to another beautiful plant, I select a branch with such delicate fern-like leaves and am reminded, “Just as you see the perfection in my branches, see the perfection in every circumstance in your life, for they are all connected as I am, and selected just for you from One who knows exactly what is perfect for you!”

As I go to another lovely plant, I select a stem with several round beautiful flowers on it. They look like little bubbles and so perfect in every way. I am told, “Let these little bubbles remind you of when you were a child and played with the bubbles and chased after them in such innocence. Don’t take life so seriously dear one, and see the innocence in yourself. Allow yourself to be more playful, like when you play with the bubbles with your grandson. Laugh and have fun.” I picked three or four of those stems for my bouquet as I knew it was an important message for me to hear and to remind myself of often.

Then as I went to another row I saw all the colors of the rainbow on the plants and they were all beautiful daisies. As I picked several of them for my colorful bouquet I was reminded that, “Every person you look at, no matter what color they are, or what their preferences are, is in perfect order. They are perfect in every way and it is up to me to see them that way no matter what anyone says or how circumstances may look at the time.” I thought about that for awhile and asked Jesus if He could shed some Light on these beautiful daisies that I was picking and how I could apply their meaning in the coming year.

He said, “Look at every person and every thought about any person in your life as just a color or daisy that they are expressing, and that what they are expressing to you may not be the same color or idea that you have, but it all fits in the same bouquet and there is no right way or wrong way. It’s just that particular person expressing their colors and since they are One with you and God created us all beautiful, see their colors (their thoughts or expressions) as only Love and a part of you. They are all one part of your bouquet created by God. You are One with everyone and everything.”

I went on to the next row and selected many beautiful branches of leaves for the background of my bouquet and was reminded that the leaves were just as pretty as the flowers and that there are no differences. Everything and everyone is as beautiful as God created us to be. There really is nothing but beauty.

As I kept going up and down the rows picking more beautiful flowers, it seemed like one was as beautiful as the next and I could see how my bouquet was all coming together as one Love bouquet. I decided I was gong to call it my Love bouquet from my Oneness Garden.

As I go on my journey tonight for Christmas eve and meet all the family and relatives, I ask, “Holy Spirit, remind me everyday this coming year that everyone I see and everything I look at is part of my Love bouquet and they are all One with me, and that there are no differences. We are all the same as God created us.”

I asked Holy Spirit to also remind me that there is no specialness and no need to feel different or apart from anyone. For in God’s eyes there are no differences and when I remember that Oneness with all, how can there ever be specialness? We are all the same. We are a part of a Plan so much greater than we could ever realize or imagine and all we have to do is trust that it is so. Holy Spirit reminded me that “Gods knows us as soooooo much more than we could ever believe of ourselves” and He told me, “It would be good for the coming year to be more accepting of our greatness as part of God and One with all.” It is not conceited or grandiose to remember and accept His plan as the one Plan of Awakening. It is necessary for our healing and the healing of all the world to accept this! Unworthiness is washed away and only our greatness is left and our worthiness to finally accept our part in God’s plan of awakening. Holy Spirit then said to me “Will you please accept this gift of Love and worthiness?” And of course I answered, “Yes, Yes, Yes!”

So now that I have my Love bouquet from the Oneness Garden to remind me of many wonderful ways of changing my thoughts and accepting God’s gifts this coming year, I do feel fulfilled and grateful. My heart is bursting with joy and love for everyone and I am really seeing everyone as God’s gift to me. Thank you Holy Spirit and Jesus for showing me the way Home.

A Long Ago Miracle Retold

Rev. Therese Anne Ward

imageMy husband and I visited our friend of 57 years. I was fourteen and a half when she hired me to clean her house, because her artist hands could not take the hard cleaning solutions. The house was almost new, and every room was decorated with her artistry: china paintings, porcelain dolls, oil paintings, flower arrangements and at Christmas time, 220 hand made beaded ornaments that sparkled on a revolving silver aluminum tree. To me it was a dream home.

Helen Mary is now in her 96th year, as she likes to say, and my husband and I sit and enjoy her telling about making the ornaments from old jewelry and thousands of beads and straight pins; no two alike, with themes of the months and every occasion imaginable. She was pointing out the ones her husband had especially liked; he passed away three years ago, when she remembered how they came to get this house.

“It was St. Anthony who did it,” she says.

It was back in 1950; she and her husband had had a total reconciliation after a four year separation and they were out looking to find a house. Helen Mary had been praying to St. Anthony, the patron saint of finding things, to find them a house that they could afford.

It was the start of summer, when out of curiosity, they drove down a dirt road in Covington, Kentucky, just to have a look, and came upon the only house that was being built there. Though she had been praying to find a house, she never ever was thinking of a new house. They liked what they saw, but didn’t expect to be able to afford a new house.

Helen Mary went back the next day with her mother and her aunt. She “planted” several St. Anthony medals in the lot around the house.

After the workers left for the day, the three women went inside and Helen Mary put more metals in the soft mortar and plaster in the doorways, thirteen medals in all, and continued to pray to St. Anthony to find them a house.

Two days later the women came out and inquired about getting the house. Helen Mary had been saving some money from teaching painting classes; her aunt offered $50.00 and her mother gave another $20.00 and the builder agreed to hold the house for them with a payment of $250.00 “good faith money.”

When the three women were driving back out the dirt road, Helen Mary’s mother exclaimed, “Did you see the name of this road? Indeed Helen Mary had not.
“It is St. Anthony Drive!”

That was 58 years ago and we sit in that same home today. There is more to the story she recounts. Helen Mary was born in 1913, she had “planted” 13 medals in this home and June 13th is St. Anthony’s feast day.

In hearing this true story from her lips, all I could think of and do was to marvel at the power of Focus, Faith and Forgiveness. My husband and I and Helen Mary were all lifted up by her miracle story retold; we left with hugs and kisses and warm hearts filled with the miracle joy of everyday Christ-mas.

My Camino

Rev. Vicki Rostant

imageThis is one story about how the Holy Spirit walked in my life during the past three years. I first felt the strong urge to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela about three years ago. I had always known about this road, the longest part of which goes through Northern Spain, hundreds of miles long, walked by many thousands of pilgrims since the beginning of the ninth century. Early Pilgrims walked the path as a means of doing penance for their sins. From all accounts, it is a journey filled with spiritual connectedness and communal blessings. You can start anywhere along the road that ends at Santiago de Compostela, where the body of the apostle, James, was buried. I felt that the time had come for me to take that journey.

I kept meeting people and situations that brought me new information about the walk and my partner and I decided that we would get on with physical training and do the walk in the summer of 2007. I was very excited. However, over the Christmas holidays of 2006, looking at the new year, it became very clear that our planned date was too close — I could feel the tension in my body when I thought, “We’re doing this in 6-7 months!”

We had tentative plans for a house exchange with friends in Scotland for the summer of 2008, so the walk would have to be in 2009, a milestone year for us as we would be celebrating our 20th anniversary and I would be celebrating my 60th birthday. What better way to give thanks for such happy dreams!

So, it then felt right to move it to the summer of 2009 — we would have more time to condition our bodies and minds, as well as, making some life-style changes, we would have better finances in place. That felt better. Each time we came to a junction in the road, I checked with Holy Spirit and felt clear about each step.

We were very excited to proceed with our Camino plans, and my partner, while not looking forward to some of the rigours involved, was supportive. We then met a woman who happened to be sitting next to me at a friend’s birthday dinner, and who had just returned from a pilgrimage on the Camino. We learned from her that there was a less arduous way of doing the walk. Rather than carry everything in your backpack, and run the risk of not finding a place to sleep at the end of the day, you can make arrangements with a travel company to have your stuff taken by van daily from one place to another with a bed guaranteed at the end of the day. All you would carry on the walk is the required food and water.

This meeting felt fortuitous, as by then I had been having doubts about the hardships involved, heat being one of them, and the one aspect I felt I could least tolerate.
My partner was also much happier about the whole thing. (By the way, the house swap fell through, and we had a lovely summer at home.)

So, with Holy Spirit’s Blessings, plans proceeded apace. And then something started to happen. Over the next several weeks, there was a slow unfolding of light in my mind that revealed the following: My motivation to walk the Camino came from a place that felt that I had to experience suffering and hardship in order to feel worthy and to prove my worthiness. I had to “do” this hard thing to feel better about myself.

As soon as that mad thought was illuminated with light and love, the desire to walk the actual Camino vanished. It felt like, with Holy Spirit, I had been walking a life road over the past three years; a road chosen by Holy Spirit to lead me to deep healing. I have committed no sins that I need to suffer for in order to feel worthy. Holy Spirit, gently, step by step, over time, the only purpose of time, carried me on the road to my own forgiveness. I look back on the unfolding of this journey and I am filled with Joy and Gratitude. So, next year, rather than suffering with blisters, aches, heat and nowhere to sleep, we are joyfully going to Paris to enjoy the happy dream instead. That’s the plan — so far. Stay tuned.
