The Gift of Union

The holy instant is truly the time of Christ. For in this liberating instant no guilt is laid upon the Son of God, and his unlimited power is thus restored to him. What other gift can you offer me, when only this [union] I choose to offer you? And to see me is to see me in everyone, and offer everyone the gift [of union] you offer me.

We who are one [in the Christ Mind] cannot give separately. When you are willing to accept our relationship [oneness] as real, guilt will hold no attraction for you. For in our union you will accept all of our brothers. The gift of union is the only gift that I was born to give. Give [union] to me, that you may have it. The time of Christ is the time appointed for the gift of freedom, offered to everyone. And by your acceptance of [freedom/union], you have offered it to everyone. Freedom is the gift of union. If we want to be free of the ego’s imprisoning thought system, we need to forgive and see our unity with God and all our brothers.

We are here to reverse our thoughts of separation and join with the Holy Spirit’s recognition of our union. In truth we are one Light; there is no distance between us. We are one Love in the one Mind of Love. As we are willing to join with the reality of our union instead of separation, we find our freedom and help free every brother along with us.

The gift of union is the only gift we want to receive from the Holy Spirit and give to every brother. This returns us to the holy instant — the time of Christ. Instead of experiencing the fear, guilt and hate found in the ego’s thought system, we return to the peace, joy and Love found in the Truth of our union with God.

Today we focus on the reality of our union in God’s Love.

Seeing Love Everywhere

Let us resolve today to ask for what we really want, and only this, that we may spend this day in fearlessness, without confusing pain with joy, or fear with love.

Father, this is Your day. It is a day in which I would do nothing by myself, but hear Your Voice in everything I do; requesting only what You offer me, accepting only Thoughts You share with me. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 339, W-pII.339.1:9-2:2. See also ACIM Lesson 339 Insights.)

God has given us His Voice to bring His Thoughts to our confused and distressed minds. We have believed in a false idea that has made us unable to distinguish between illusion and truth. But we can count on God’s Voice to show us what is true and pure if we are willing to listen.

Today we dedicate to listening, for it is our heart’s desire to remember the truth and see the Love of God everywhere.

Accepting the Healing of our Mind

Healing and Atonement are not related; they are identical. There is no order of difficulty in miracles because there are no degrees of Atonement. It is the one complete concept possible in this world, because it is the source of a wholly unified perception. Partial Atonement is a meaningless idea, just as special areas of hell in Heaven are inconceivable. Accept Atonement and you are healed. Atonement is the Word of God. Accept His Word and what remains to make sickness possible? Accept His Word and every miracle has been accomplished. To forgive is to heal. The teacher of God has taken accepting the Atonement for himself as his only function.

He overlooks the [ego] mind and body, seeing only the face of Christ shining in front of him, correcting all mistakes and healing all perception.

No longer does he stand apart from God, determining where healing should be given and where it should be withheld. Now can he say with God, ‘This is my beloved Son, created perfect and forever so.’ (A Course in Miracles, M-22.1:1-10;4:5;7:9-10)

To accept Atonement for ourselves means letting go of all unforgiving thoughts. An unforgiving thought is a thought that denies our oneness with God’s Love. Any thought of judgment of ourselves or our brothers is an unforgiving thought. Believing we are a body is an unforgiving thought. Believing any form is real is an unforgiving thought because Love is formless. What is one can have no distinguishing form that separates it from all that is. There is nothing outside the oneness of Love, since only Love is real.

Each time we bring an unforgiving thought to the Holy Spirit and accept His gentle correction, we take another step toward the Atonement. When we are able to see past form to the face of Christ, the face of innocence, we move toward full acceptance of the Atonement. As we practice letting Holy Spirit guide all our thoughts, our days become steps toward full acceptance of the Atonement and the healing of our minds. This is our practice today.

Accepting Heaven as Our Home

Christ’s vision is a miracle. It comes from far beyond itself, for it reflects eternal love and the rebirth of love which never dies, but has been kept obscure. Christ’s vision pictures Heaven, for it sees a world so like to Heaven that what God created perfect can be mirrored there. The darkened glass the world presents can show but twisted images in broken parts. The real world pictures Heaven’s innocence.

This is the Holy Spirit’s single gift; the treasure house to which you can appeal with perfect certainty for all the things that can contribute to your happiness.

Take from His storehouse, that its treasures may increase.

Behold the store of miracles set out for you to give. Are you not worth the gift, when God appointed it be given you? Judge not God’s Son, but follow in the way He has established. Christ has dreamed the dream of a forgiven world. It is His gift, whereby a sweet transition can be made from death to life; from hopelessness to hope. Let us an instant dream with Him. His dream awakens us to truth. His vision gives the means for a return to our unlost and everlasting sanctity in God. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 159, W-pI.159.3;6:1;9:1;10. Forgiveness is the key to happiness. Christ’s vision sees a forgiven world, so it sees a world of happiness and peace. As we practice asking Holy Spirit to help us see as He sees, to see with Christ’s vision, we experience a more peaceful, more loving and happier world. We recognize our brothers are one with us, and thus conflict fades away.

When we have forgiven completely with no reservations, we stand in the lawns of Heaven. We are ready to accept God’s welcome to return to His Home where we were created to be. We have accepted that we are Love, along with all that is real. There is nothing else. We have accepted Heaven as our Home.

We Take Christ’s Hand and Let Him Lead

The Christ in you is very still. He knows where you are going, and He leads you there in gentleness and blessing all the way. His love for God replaces all the fear you thought you saw within yourself.

He knows that Love is in you now, and safely held in you by that same hand that holds your brother’s in your own. Christ’s hand holds all His brothers in Himself. He gives them vision for their sightless eyes, and sings to them of Heaven, that their ears may hear no more the sound of battle and of death. He reaches through them, holding out His hand, that everyone may bless all living things, and see their holiness.… The sight of Christ is all there is to see. The song of Christ is all there is to hear. The hand of Christ is all there is to hold. There is no journey but to walk with Him. (A Course in Miracles, T-24.V.6:1-3;7:1-4,7-10. Forgiveness clears the way for us to recognize the Christ in our brothers and ourself. The face of Christ is the symbol of innocence. When we are judging, we cannot see innocence, neither in our brother nor ourself. Judgment makes our brother an adversary, a symbol of our own guilt we are trying to hide. Yet the judgment holds the guilt in place.

Forgiveness is the key to freedom, for it lets go of the barriers that prevent us from recognizing our innocence and the Love we are. Forgiveness frees us to be our Self, as God created It. Forgiveness lets us see our brother as our friend and join with us in our one Self.

Today we choose to hold Christ’s hand and let Him teach us to forgive and see the truth that only Love is real.

Change Our Belief, Change the World

Every thought you have makes up some segment of the world you see. It is with your thoughts, then, that we must work, if your perception of the world is to be changed.

If the cause of the world you see is attack thoughts, you must learn that it is these thoughts which you do not want. There is no point in lamenting the world. There is no point in trying to change the world. It is incapable of change because it is merely an effect. But there is indeed a point in changing your thoughts about the world. Here you are changing the cause. The effect will change automatically.

The idea for today introduces the thought that you are not trapped in the world you see, because its cause can be changed. This change requires, first, that the cause be identified and then let go, so that it can be replaced. The first two steps in this process require your cooperation. The final one does not. Your images have already been replaced. By taking the first two steps, you will see that this is so. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 23, W-pI.23.1:4-2:7;5. See also ACIM Lesson 23 Insights.)

Believing we are a body is an attack thought because it is a denial of the oneness of Love, our true Identity. As long as we identify with this false image as what we are, we will feel weak and vulnerable, fearful and guilty. The world seems to be filled with forces that can harm us against which we need to defend. Yet all these images simply represent our belief that we are alone and separate.

The good news is that beliefs can be changed. We can let go our belief in being separate and let it be replaced by awareness of our oneness in Love. The practice of frequently, throughout the day, asking for the Holy Spirit’s help to see as He sees opens the door for a new way of seeing. We are willing to set aside our interpretations and let them be replaced. This is how we free ourselves from the experience of fear and guilt and open to the experience of Love and innocence already given us in our creation.

Forgiveness Joins Your Mind with the Reality in You

In truth is innocence the only thing there is. Forgiveness stands between illusions and the truth; between the world you see and that which lies beyond; between the hell of guilt and Heaven’s gate.

Across this bridge, as powerful as love which laid its blessing on it, are all dreams of evil and of hatred and attack brought silently to truth. They are not kept to swell and bluster, and to terrify the foolish dreamer who believes in them. He has been gently wakened from his dream by understanding what he thought he saw was never there.

Forgiveness must be practiced, for the world cannot perceive its meaning, nor provide a guide to teach you its beneficence. There is no thought in all the world that leads to any understanding of the laws [forgiveness] follows, nor the Thought that it reflects. It is as alien to the world as is your own reality. And yet [forgiveness] joins your mind with the reality in you. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 134, W-pI.134.10:3-11:3;13. See also ACIM Lesson 134 Insights.)

The ego is incapable of forgiving. Forgiveness comes from understanding that is beyond the domain of the ego. The Truth in our minds sees beyond the ego to the loving innocence that is the reality of our Home. With the help of the Holy Spirit in our minds, forgiveness bridges the seeming gap between the ego’s thought system of sin, guilt and fear and the reality of Love’s innocence in Heaven.

We are accustomed to thinking with the ego thought system. And so we must be taught how to think with the Truth in us. As we practice remembering that of ourselves we do not know what anything means and offer our perceptions to the Holy Spirit with willingness to receive His vision, we awaken from the dream of separation. Forgiveness is the means to return to Heaven, our true Home. Today we practice letting the Holy Spirit show us what everything means.
