Learning to Accept the Love We Are

God’s teachers have learned how to be simple. ²They have no dreams that need defense against the truth. ³They do not try to make themselves. ⁴Their joy comes from their understanding Who created them. ⁵And does what God created need defense? ⁶No one can become an advanced teacher of God until he fully understands that defenses are but foolish guardians of mad illusions. ⁷The more grotesque the dream, the fiercer and more powerful its defenses seem to be. ⁸Yet when the teacher of God finally agrees to look past them, he finds that nothing was there. ⁹Slowly at first he lets himself be undeceived. ¹⁰But he learns faster as his trust increases. ¹¹It is not danger that comes when defenses are laid down. ¹²It is safety. ¹³It is peace. ¹⁴It is joy. ¹⁵And it is God. (A Course in Miracles, M-4.VI.1)

Our dream of identifying with a body is a defense against the oneness of God’s Love. Separate images do not exist in what is uniformly one. This is why the Course teaches us that we are not a body. We are God’s Son, united with Him and His Love.

Having made the choice to believe in a separate identity, we need help from our inner Teacher to learn to see the truth beyond the illusions. Each time we let the Holy Spirit help us forgive a thought of separation, we take a step closer to letting truth dawn upon our minds. The truth sets us free to accept God’s gift of all His Love. As we we accept this gift, we become messengers of His Love.

It is a gentle process, because the Holy Spirit always leads us away from fear. His lessons help us accept the peace and happiness that is our natural state. Today we welcome His help to lay down our defenses and awaken to the safety and joy of our Life in God.

The Choice for Peace

I will step back and let Him lead the way.

There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. ²You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. ³Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet. ⁴And the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. ⁵Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also, and believe that you are like them, as you were before.

The world is an illusion. ²Those who choose to come to it are seeking for a place where they can be illusions, and avoid their own reality. ³Yet when they find their own reality is even here, then they step back and let it lead the way. ⁴What other choice is really theirs to make? ⁵To let illusions walk ahead of truth is madness. ⁶But to let illusion sink behind the truth and let the truth stand forth as what it is, is merely sanity.

This is the simple choice we make today. ²The mad illusion will remain awhile in evidence, for those to look upon who chose to come, and have not yet rejoiced to find they were mistaken in their choice. ³They cannot learn directly from the truth, because they have denied that it is so. ⁴And so they need a Teacher Who perceives their madness, but Who still can look beyond illusion to the simple truth in them.

…there is another road that leads away from loss of every kind, for sacrifice and deprivation both are quickly left behind. ²This is the way appointed for you now. (A Course in Miracles, W-155.1–3;5:1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 155 Insights.)

In every moment we have the opportunity to dismiss illusions and choose the peace of God. The chaos of this world is only a dream that is not true. The peace of God is always in us, hidden only by our choice to believe the illusions in the dream.

Let us join today in the oneness of God’s Love. In truth, this is where we live. As we make the choice for truth, we walk the world lightly in His Light. We become God’s messengers who show the way to our brothers who search for what we have found. As we accept His Love, we bring blessing to the world. We dwell in gratitude.

Learning from the Teacher of Truth

[The] space you see as setting off all things from one another is the means by which the world’s perception is achieved. ²You see something where nothing is, and see as well nothing where there is unity; a space between all things, between all things and you. ³Thus do you think that you have given life in separation. ⁴By this split you think you are established as a unity which functions with an independent will.

Such is the teaching of the world. ²It is a phase of learning everyone who comes must go through. ³But the sooner he perceives on what it rests, how questionable are its premises, how doubtful its results, the sooner does he question its effects. ⁴Learning that stops with what the world would teach stops short of meaning. ⁵In its proper place, it serves but as a starting point from which another kind of learning can begin, a new perception can be gained, and all the arbitrary names the world bestows can be withdrawn as they are raised to doubt.

Think not you made the world. ²Illusions, yes! ³But what is true in earth and Heaven is beyond your naming. ⁴When you call upon a brother, it is to his body that you make appeal. ⁵His true Identity is hidden from you by what you believe he really is. The oneness of God’s universe of Love is simple — only Love is real. Nothing else exists.

The dream of separation is complex. It is not understandable, though many have spent lifetimes trying to make sense of it. Illusions have no meaning and efforts to understand them never bring peace.

Today we are called to give our attention to the Teacher of Truth. When we are willing to step back from our focus on the world, our minds are open to receive Christ’s vision. We see opportunities to answer calls for Love with Love. We recognize the Love that is the truth in every brother. We are grateful for the peace that comes with joining with the Love that is the truth in every brother.

The Key to Reversing Our False Beliefs

²What God did not create does not exist. ³And everything that does exist exists as He created it. ⁴The world you see has nothing to do with reality. ⁵It is of your own making, and it does not exist.

[God did not create a meaningless world] is another step in learning to let go the thoughts that you have written on the world, and see the Word of God in their place. …⁶Our direction is toward perfect safety and perfect peace.

With eyes closed, think of all the horrors in the world that cross your mind. ²Name each one as it occurs to you, and then deny its reality. ³God did not create it, and so it is not real. ⁴Say, for example:

⁵God did not create that war, and so it is not real.
⁶God did not create that airplane crash, and so it is not real.
⁷God did not create that disaster [specify], and so it is not real.

“Suitable subjects for the application of today’s idea also include anything you are afraid might happen to you, or to anyone about whom you are concerned.”

“²These things are part of the world you see. ³Some of them are shared illusions, and others are part of your personal hell. ⁴It does not matter. ⁵What God did not create can only be in your own mind apart from His. ⁶Therefore, it has no meaning.” (A Course in Miracles, W-14.1:2-5;3:1,6;4:1–5:1;6:2-6. This lesson prepares our mind for healing of our false beliefs. As we can accept that the body and what we perceive with its senses are not real, we leave room for truth to enter our mind. The truth is the opposite of what we see in this world.

Our true Self dwells in the oneness of Love. Here there are no differences, no loss nor harm, only the joyous eternal extension of Love. This is our real Life.

We have been given the Holy Spirit to help us reverse our thoughts and beliefs. This reversal sets us free from the body’s limitations and the fear and guilt that come with believing this world is real. We are grateful that we have the means to awaken to the Life we live in Love.

Willingness to Let Go of False Beliefs

There are no laws but God’s. ²Dismiss all foolish magical beliefs today, and hold your mind in silent readiness to hear the Voice that speaks the truth to you. ³You will be listening to One Who says there is no loss under the laws of God. ⁴Payment is neither given nor received. ⁵Exchange cannot be made; there are no substitutes; and nothing is replaced by something else. ⁶God’s laws forever give and never take.

Hear Him Who tells you this, and realize how foolish are the “laws” you thought upheld the world you thought you saw. ²Then listen further. ³He will tell you more. ⁴About the Love your Father has for you. ⁵About the endless joy He offers you. ⁶About His yearning for His only Son, created as His channel for creation; denied to Him by his belief in hell.

Let us today open God’s channels to Him, and let His Will extend through us to Him. ²Thus is creation endlessly increased. ³His Voice will speak of this to us, as well as of the joys of Heaven which His laws keep limitless forever. The Will of God that extends through us is the eternal extension of Love to Love. That is our function as His Son. Fulfillment and joy overflow as we accept the Will we share with God.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to help us recognize the false beliefs that interfere with the flow of Love through us to the world. We offer these beliefs to Him to be healed. Our part is to be willing to let them go. He will do the rest. With His help, we will forgive ourselves for our mistakes and join in the eternal flow of Love to Itself. We will remember the Love in which we live.

Love Is Our Only Reality

I am as God created me.

Today we continue with the one idea which brings complete salvation; the one statement which makes all forms of temptation powerless; the one thought which renders the ego silent and entirely undone. ²You are as God created you. ³The sounds of this world are still, the sights of this world disappear, and all the thoughts that this world ever held are wiped away forever by this one idea. ⁴Here is salvation accomplished. ⁵Here is sanity restored.

True light is strength, and strength is sinlessness. ²If you remain as God created you, you must be strong and light must be in you. ³He Who ensured your sinlessness must be the guarantee of strength and light as well. ⁴You are as God created you.

⁵Now try to reach the Son of God in you. ⁶This is the Self that never sinned, nor made an image to replace reality. ⁷This is the Self that never left Its home in God to walk the world uncertainly. ⁸This is the Self that knows no fear, nor could conceive of loss or suffering or death.

…be sure to respond to anyone who seems to irritate you with these words:

⁶You are as God created you.

God created His Son like Himself. Like Him we, His Son, are Love and nothing else. Love sees only Love, for nothing else is real. Love is our only reality. It is our Life and our Identity. Its strength is ours. It has no opposite. It does not judge because It sees only Itself everywhere.

When we accept that we are as God created us, we accept our Identity. We are at peace and we join in the joyous extension of Love.

A Practice That Sets Us Free

Who assumes a power that he does not possess is deceiving himself. ²Yet to accept the power given him by God is but to acknowledge his Creator and accept His gifts. ³And His gifts have no limit. ⁴To ask the Holy Spirit to decide for you is simply to accept your true inheritance. ⁵Does this mean that you cannot say anything without consulting Him? ⁶No, indeed! ⁷That would hardly be practical, and it is the practical with which this course is most concerned. ⁸If you have made it a habit to ask for help when and where you can, you can be confident that wisdom will be given you when you need it. ⁹Prepare for this each morning, remember God when you can throughout the day, ask the Holy Spirit’s help when it is feasible to do so, and thank Him for His guidance at night. ¹⁰And your confidence will be well founded indeed. (A Course in Miracles, M-29.5)

Here we have a practice that can set us free from fear and guilt. We have a Guide within our mind Whose purpose is to guide us to full remembrance of our Identity in God. Our Identity is a given; It can never change. To ask the Holy Spirit to make all decisions on our behalf is willingness to let truth replace all self-deceptions.

To perceive anyone as a body, including our own, is to accept false beliefs. The Holy Spirit sees past these perceptions to the Love that is our Identity. Each day we can set our intent to let the Holy Spirit decide all things on our behalf. As we practice pausing throughout the day to accept His help, we become His messenger to bring healing to the world and heal our minds as well.
