We Have a Mighty Helper

What is the ego? But a dream of what you really are. A thought you are apart from your Creator and a wish to be what He created not. It is a thing of madness, not reality at all.

The ego’s opposite in every way,—in origin, effect and consequence—we call a miracle. And here we find all that is not the ego in this world.

What is a miracle? A dream as well. But look at all the aspects of this dream and you will never question any more. Look at the kindly world you see extend before you as you walk in gentleness. Look at the helpers all along the way you travel, happy in the certainty of Heaven and the surety of peace. And look an instant, too, on what you left behind at last and finally passed by.

The miracle forgives; the ego damns.… Problem and answer lie together here, and having met at last the choice is clear. Who chooses hell when it is recognized? And who would not go on a little while when it is given him to understand the way is short and Heaven is his goal? (A Course in Miracles, C-2.1:4-7;5:1-2;7:1-6;10:1,4-6)

Condemnation hides the face of Christ, the recognition of innocence, from our awareness. Judgment, guilt, fear, sadness, lack of Love draw a veil across the real world of Love, making It unknown to us. We have been given the means to part the veil and move past it into the Light and Love that is our true Home.

We have a mighty Helper Whose purpose is to help us forgive — overlook the illusions of the world — so that we may see the face of Christ, the innocence, in every brother and ourselves. Each time we choose to accept this Help, we take another step on our journey of return to Heaven. This is our practice today.

Opening to God’s Joy and Peace

You are the dreamer of the world of dreams. No other cause it has, nor ever will. Nothing more fearful than an idle dream has terrified God’s Son, and made him think that he has lost his innocence, denied his Father, and made war upon himself. So fearful is the dream, so seeming real, he could not waken to reality without the sweat of terror and a scream of mortal fear, unless a gentler dream preceded his awaking, and allowed his calmer mind to welcome, not to fear, the Voice that calls with love to waken him; a gentler dream, in which his suffering was healed and where his brother was his friend. God willed he waken gently and with joy, and gave him means to waken without fear.

Accept the dream He gave instead of yours. It is not difficult to change a dream when once the dreamer has been recognized. Rest in the Holy Spirit, and allow His gentle dreams to take the place of those you dreamed in terror and in fear of death. He brings forgiving dreams, in which the choice is not who is the murderer and who shall be the victim. In the dreams He brings there is no murder and there is no death. The dream of guilt is fading from your sight, although your eyes are closed. A smile has come to lighten up your sleeping face. The sleep is peaceful now, for these are happy dreams. God has given us the means to release ourselves from the experience of being a victim of a world of forces outside ourselves that can make us happy or sad, peaceful or fearful. This precious gift is the Holy Spirit in our mind, ever present and ready to show us a way to see the world differently. The Holy Spirit knows that only Love is real. Any other perception is just the result of believing in a false world of separation that could never be true.

We can open ourselves to the freedom of God’s Love by being willing to receive the Holy Spirit’s kind and gentle lessons that show us that the fearful and shameful things we see through the body’s eyes are only feverish dreams. The Holy Spirit will show us the Love beyond the fear, the innocence beyond the guilt. We need only be willing to take all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit with willingness to accept His help to see them differently. What He will show us will bring joy to our hearts and peace to our troubled minds. It’s worth the practice.

Freedom Through Seeing Our Brother’s Innocence

Do you not want to know your own Identity? Would you not happily exchange your doubts for certainty? Would you not willingly be free of misery, and learn again of joy? Your holy relationship [seeing your brother as innocent] offers all this to you.

Your brother’s sinlessness is given you in shining light, to look on with the Holy Spirit’s vision and to rejoice in along with Him. For peace will come to all who ask for it with real desire and sincerity of purpose, shared with the Holy Spirit and at one with Him on what salvation is. Be willing, then, to see your brother sinless, that Christ may rise before your vision and give you joy. And place no value on your brother’s body, which holds him to illusions of what he is. It is his desire to see his sinlessness, as it is yours. And bless the Son of God in your relationship, nor see in him what you have made of him.” (A Course in Miracles, T-20.VIII.2:1-4;3. We have the opportunity to see the world anew through Holy Spirit’s vision. It is not through the body’s eyes, but rather Divine Inspiration that we ask for now… We ask to see past images of separation, past bodies, to the infinite Source of Light and Love, which is there eternally.

What we ask for in our heart of hearts, we receive. As we want to see our brother’s innocence, it is given us. We will see the Love he is, incapable of harm or malice… We will see his eternal presence of Love… We will see that he is inherently one with our Father and our Self… We will feel the peace and certainty of Heaven… We will see that nothing could ever really happen to change Love’s pure extension of Itself…

We see past dreams today and find our true Identity… We know we share that Identity with every brother… All this comes as we practice seeing our brother’s innocence… Our dreams of fear are dissolved.

Remembering Our Source, Our Life

Here is the only “sacrifice” You ask of Your beloved Son; You ask him to give up all suffering, all sense of loss and sadness, all anxiety and doubt, and freely let Your Love come streaming in to his awareness, healing him of pain, and giving him Your Own eternal joy. Such is the “sacrifice” You ask of me, and one I gladly make; the only “cost” of restoration of Your memory to me, for the salvation of the world.

And as we pay the debt we owe to truth,—a debt that merely is the letting go of self-deceptions and of images we worshipped falsely—truth returns to us in wholeness and in joy. We are deceived no longer. Love has now returned to our awareness. And we are at peace again, for fear has gone and only love remains. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 1323, W-pII.323.1-2. Why would we not freely give up pain and suffering to receive Love and joy? Only because we have deceived ourselves to believe that illusions are real and valuable. Having convinced ourselves that what is false is true, we need help from outside this mistaken belief system to learn to recognize truth as true and false as false.

As we let the Holy Spirit shine His Light of Love on our perceptions, the false images we have overlaid on truth dissolve and the oneness of Loves eternal Light shines through. We need not battle against false ideas. We need only let the Holy Spirit show us their falsity. Once recognized as false, they are freely laid down to be seen no more. Into the place left vacant, Love rushes in, bringing God’s peace with it. And we remember God, our Creator and our Source — our very Life.

Today We Open to Peace and Extend Peace

The light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness. My forgiveness is the means by which the light of the world finds expression through me. My forgiveness is the means by which I become aware of the light of the world in me. My forgiveness is the means by which the world is healed, together with myself. Let me, then, forgive the world, that it may be healed along with me.

Suggestions for specific forms for applying this idea are:

Let peace extend from my mind to yours, [name].
I share the light of the world with you, [name].
Through my forgiveness I can see this as it is. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 82, W-pI.82. See also ACIM Lesson 82 Insights.)

As we see the Christ in every brother, we are forgiving, or letting go of, our illusions of separation. We are in the process of forgiving the world for what we ever thought it was. We are in the process of letting go of what was never true. This leaves a clean and empty space to return to our true Identity as one with all of God’s Love. This is forgiveness. This is how we become aware of the Light of the world in ourselves and every brother.

With forgiveness, our mind is filled with peace… Illusions fall away and disappear as we receive the Light and share the Light with everyone… In truth we share one Identity — the Identity of eternal Love… We let the truth return to our minds today, because it is what we truly want above all else.

As we willing receive the Light the darkness automatically disappears. Thoughts of conflict and fear disappear. Thoughts of guilt and lack disappear. This is our only function here. This is what it means when we are told, “The Light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness.” And we are truly grateful that this is so.

True Perception Through Forgiveness

Certain it is that all distress does not appear to be but unforgiveness. Yet that is the content underneath the form.

How can you tell when you are seeing wrong, or someone else is failing to perceive the lesson he should learn? Does pain seem real in the perception? If it does, be sure the lesson is not learned. And there remains an unforgiveness hiding in the mind that sees the pain through eyes the mind directs.

God would not have you suffer thus. He would help you forgive yourself.

There is a way to look on everything that lets it be to you another step to Him, and to salvation of the world. To all that speaks of terror, answer thus:

I will forgive, and this will disappear.

To every apprehension, every care and every form of suffering, repeat these selfsame words. And then you hold the key that opens Heaven’s gate, and brings the Love of God the Father down to earth at last, to raise it up to Heaven. (W-pI.193.4:1-2;7:1-8:2;13:1-5)

The Holy Spirit brings us God’s training program to set us free from fear and guilt, from pain and suffering. The lesson exercises of this program are given to us all day, every day, in every moment. Every perception that seems to bring pain or disturb my peace brings us the lesson that will set us free.

The first step is to remind ourselves, “I will forgive and this will disappear.” With this, we need to bring willingness to receive Holy Spirit’s replacement perception which will show us what we have perceived is not real and that what is real is Love.

If we are willing to receive Holy Spirit’s vision, the appearances of attack and defense will fade away as we learn the lesson of true forgiveness. With our willingness, today promises to be a day of release and recognition of our true Self as our Identity. We will learn that only Love is real.

Attaining God’s Peace Through Forgiveness

God’s peace can never come where anger is, for anger must deny that peace exists. Who sees anger as justified in any way or any circumstance proclaims that peace is meaningless, and must believe that it cannot exist. In this condition, peace cannot be found. Therefore, forgiveness is the necessary condition for finding the peace of God. More than this, given forgiveness there must be peace. For what except attack will lead to war? And what but peace is opposite to war? Here the initial contrast stands out clear and apparent. Yet when peace is found, the war is meaningless. And it is conflict now that is perceived as nonexistent and unreal.

Forgive the world, and you will understand that everything that God created cannot have an end, and nothing He did not create is real. In this one sentence is our course explained.

God’s peace is the condition for His Will. Attain His peace, and you remember Him. (A Course in Miracles, M-20.3:3-12;5:7-8;6:12-13)

It is helpful to remember the many forms in which anger can appear: Depression, worry, guilt, shame, even insisting that the body is real and seeing a brother’s identity as a body. These are all forms that reflect belief in being separate, which comes from being angry at God for not giving us special love. He would not give us more than everything.

Thus any time we feel concern, worry, sadness, irritation, frustration or upset of any kind, the only meaningful response is to forgive it. To forgive it, we must ask for help from beyond the thought system that made the disturbing circumstance. We need to turn over the perception that triggered the response to the Holy Spirit with willingness to receive His help to see the truth beyond the perception.

As we accept His Light that reveals the truth, the perception of conflict fades away and we see in its place the eternal Light of Love That was always present, only hidden by a false idea. This practice of forgiveness is the key to finding the peace of God.
