Accepting Our True Self as God Created It

God has condemned me not. No more do I.

My Father knows my holiness. Shall I deny His knowledge, and believe in what His knowledge makes impossible? Shall I accept as true what He proclaims as false? Or shall I take His Word for what I am, since He is my Creator, and the One Who knows the true condition of His Son?

Father, I was mistaken in myself, because I failed to realize the Source from which I came. I have not left that Source to enter in a body and to die. My holiness remains a part of me, as I am part of You. And my mistakes about myself are dreams. I let them go today. And I stand ready to receive Your Word alone for what I really am. Most of us view the world through a lens of guilt and shame. We believe we are guilty of denying God and deserve to be punished for this sin. It manifests in our dream as harm to the body in the forms of sickness and bodily harm. We are ashamed of what we have done and believe we are unworthy of Love and appreciation. This is the condition of our experience identified with the ego.

We have condemned ourselves to this. But God has not. He knows His Son, our true Self, remains one with Him in the innocence and changelessness of Love. He has not changed His Mind about His creation. We remain eternally united with our Source. He judges us worthy of His Love, forever innocent, forever whole. This is His Word about His Son. We remain forever at Home in the Heaven of God’s Love, invulnerable to any change.

Today let us remind ourselves frequently that we remain as God created us, forever loved and forever loving. And when we look upon a brother, we affirm that he is forever loved and loving. As we accept this thought, we free ourselves from the dream of separation.

Remembering the Love We Share with God

I walk with God in perfect holiness.

Today’s idea but states the simple truth that makes the thought of sin impossible. It promises there is no cause for guilt, and being causeless it does not exist. [This idea] follows surely from the basic thought so often mentioned in the text; ideas leave not their source. If this be true, how can you be apart from God? How could you walk the world alone and separate from your Source?

You cannot walk the world apart from God, because you could not be without Him. He is what your life is. Where you are He is. There is one life. That life you share with Him. Nothing can be apart from Him and live.

Yet where He is, there must be holiness as well as life. No attribute of His remains unshared by everything that lives. What lives is holy as Himself, because what shares His life is part of Holiness, and could no more be sinful than the sun could choose to be of ice; the sea elect to be apart from water, or the grass to grow with roots suspended in the air. Our existence depends upon our unbreakable connection with our Source. We exist solely as God’s Son—the extension of His Love. This existence has nothing to do with our image of a self limited to a body in a dream of separation. Dreams do not exist in truth. What we seem to experience in a dream has no effect on our real existence in God.

Our only meaningful purpose in the world is to bring the illusions of the dream to truth — to bring our misperceptions to the Holy Spirit for His loving correction. We are not alone. We cannot harm or be harmed in truth. As we learn that we are not a body, we learn that we are free from harm, from sin, from anything other than Love. Only Love is real. This is the foundation of God’s plan for our salvation, our release from the mistaken belief in being separate.

Today we remember that we walk with God in perfect holiness. The perception of anything other than this is a call for Love. We respond to this call by asking for the Holy Spirit’s help to see past the error to the Love we are, united in God.

Choosing to Fulfill Our Purpose

[Believing] the world [is real] gives rise but to defensiveness. For threat brings anger, anger makes attack seem reasonable, honestly provoked, and righteous in the name of self-defense.

We look past dreams today, and recognize that we need no defense because we are created unassailable, without all thought or wish or dream in which attack has any meaning. Now we cannot fear, for we have left all fearful thoughts behind. And in defenselessness we stand secure, serenely certain of our safety now, sure of salvation; sure we will fulfill our chosen purpose, as our ministry extends its holy blessing through the world.

Be still a moment, and in silence think how holy is your purpose, how secure you rest, untouchable within its light. God’s ministers have chosen that the truth be with them. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 153, W-pI.153.2:1-2;9:1-10:2. See also ACIM Lesson 153 Insights.)

Everyone’s ministry, no matter what role they seem to play in the world, is to extend Love. If anyone does not appear to be extending Love, it is only because the world seems real both to that person and the perceiver. Both need healing because in their mind they have identified with the mistaken belief that separation is real.

When we choose to accept our true purpose, our mind is healed by accepting the reality of Love. There is no room for separation in Love’s oneness. As we accept Love’s reality, we automatically extend Love to our brothers and recognize the truth in them is one with the truth in us; we are of one Mind, the Mind of God.

Today we choose to accept and fulfill our purpose by choosing the Holy Spirit as our Guide in all our doing. With this choice, Love directs us and transforms our perceptions. By choosing no exceptions, our minds are healed and we remember God.

God’s Special Plan for Our Awakening

I follow in the way appointed me.

I have a special place to fill; a role for me alone. Salvation waits until I take this part as what I choose to do. Until I make this choice, I am the slave of time and human destiny. But when I willingly and gladly go the way my Father’s plan appointed me to go, then will I recognize salvation is already here, already given all my brothers and already mine as well.

Father, Your way is what I choose today. Where it would lead me do I choose to go; what it would have me do I choose to do. Your way is certain, and the end secure. The memory of You awaits me there. And all my sorrows end in Your embrace, which You have promised to Your Son, who thought mistakenly that he had wandered from the sure pro­tection of Your loving Arms. We each have a unique role in God’s plan for our salvation because we believe we are a special, unique identity, separate from all others. It is this false identity that we must let go to remember the one Identity we share with All That is. We each need a unique plan for awakening customized to heal the set of false beliefs that stand between what we believe we are and our true Self at Home in Heaven.

The Holy Spirit will guide us gently and lovingly in the way to heal our mind of false beliefs. Each time we forgive a mistaken belief, the whole Sonship is blessed as we are blessed. Today we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide in what to think, say and do. For we would follow God’s plan for our awakening to Love.

Freeing Our Mind to Accept God’s Love

The holy instant is the opposite of the ego’s fixed belief in salvation through vengeance for the past. In the holy instant it is understood that the past is gone, and with its passing the drive for vengeance has been uprooted and has disappeared. The stillness and the peace of now enfold you in perfect gentleness. [In the holy instant] everything is gone except the truth.

There is nothing you can hold against reality. All that must be forgiven are the illusions you have held against your brothers. Their reality has no past, and only illusions can be forgiven.

Remember that you always choose between truth and illusion; between the real Atonement that would heal and the ego’s “atonement” that would destroy. The power of God and all His Love, without limit, will support you as you seek only your place in the plan of Atonement arising from His Love. Be an ally of God and not the ego in seeking how Atonement can come to you. His help suffices, for His Messenger understands how to restore the Kingdom to you, and to place all your investment in salvation in your relationship with Him. Real atonement comes with fully accepting the Reality of God’s Love. We do not need to be saved from Love. But we do need to be saved from our denial of Love, our choice to believe that separation is real. In separation, the ego offers us a substitute identity represented by the body. This identity can never be at peace because it comes from the denial of God’s peace. It thus believes it is vulnerable to harm and able to inflict harm. This is impossible in the oneness of Love.

The holy instant is the moment in time where the past has been let go. Without the past we are in the present moment of Truth where the reality of Love’s oneness is accepted. The Holy Spirit offers us the means use Love’s vision to overlook the illusions of separation and see the presence of Love in our brother.

With the past dismissed from our mind, we see our brother truly and see our true Self reflected back to us. Each time we let the Holy Spirit redirect our vision to the truth, we move closer to the atonement that frees our mind to accept its Home in God’s Love.

Remembering God Is in Us

I will not fear to look within today.

Within me is eternal innocence, because it is God’s Will that it be there forever and forever. I, His Son, whose will is limitless as is His Own, can will no change in this. For to deny my Father’s Will is to deny my own. To look within is but to find my will as God created it, and as it is. I fear to look within because I think I made another will that is not true, and made it real. Yet it has no effects. Within me is the Holiness of God. Within me is the memory of Him.

The step I take today, my Father, is my sure release from idle dreams of sin. Your altar stands serene and undefiled. It is the holy altar to my Self, and there I find my true Identity. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 309, W-pII.309. See also ACIM Lesson 309 Insights.)

Here is an exercise that can help us remember that God is in us and we share God’s Will.

Pause and quiet your mind. Think of someone you love — a spouse, child, sibling, close friend…

Mentally say, “I see the Holiness of God in you.” Pause to absorb the feeling that comes as you accept this idea…

You may find it helpful to repeat the idea.…

Then think another person you are acquainted with and mentally say, “I see the Holiness of God in you.” Pause to let this way of seeing strengthen

Repeat the idea as guided.…

Then pick someone you think of as an adversary and say, “I see the Holiness of God in you.” Again, allow time for this way of seeing strengthen for you…

This practice will help us remember that God is in us and His Will is ours.

Remembering Our Eternal Connection with God

The Will of the Father and of the Son are One, by Their extension. Their extension is the result of Their Oneness, holding Their unity together by extending Their joint Will. This is perfect creation by the perfectly created, in union with the perfect Creator. The Father [Love] must give fatherhood [ability to extend Love] to His Son, because His Own Fatherhood [Love] must be extended outward. You who belong in God have the holy function of extending His Fatherhood by placing no limits upon [Love’s extension]. Let the Holy Spirit teach you how to do this, for you can know what it means only of God Himself.

When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him you will see yourself. As you treat him you will treat yourself. As you think of him you will think of yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself. Whenever two Sons of God meet, they are given another chance at salvation. Do not leave anyone without giving salvation to him and receiving it yourself. For I am always there with you, in remembrance of you [Love]. (A Course in Miracles, T-8.III.3-4. Our unbreakable link with God is His Will that we remain united with Him in His eternal extension of Love. To maintain this unity, our true Self, His Son, also extends Love. We claim and maintain our Inheritance by giving Love to all. If we try to keep Love for ourself alone, we lose It because we are denying What It is.

Every encounter with a brother has the potential to be holy if we use it to join with the Love he is. This simultaneously accepts the Love we are. The truth in our brother and ourself is one and the same.

If we see our brother as limited to a body and not one with us, we are disowning our inheritance. We are unaware of the Love we are. The sense of lack this induces causes us to search for the Love we believe we have lost. If we choose the ego as our guide, we will be led to search for Love where It cannot be found. The world will seem to be a place of loneliness, lack and fear of loss.

But we can choose another Guide Who remembers for us our unbreakable connection with our Creator. He will guide us out of the wilderness of lovelessness to return to accepting our eternal unity with every brother in Love. He will teach us how to make every encounter holy.
