Awakening to the Life We Live in God

…this course was sent to open up the path of light to us, and teach us, step by step, how to return to the eternal Self we thought we lost.

I take the journey with you. For I share your doubts and fears a little while, that you may come to me who recognize the road by which all fears and doubts are overcome. We walk together. I must understand uncertainty and pain, although I know they have no meaning. Yet a savior must remain with those he teaches, seeing what they see, but still retaining in his mind the way that led him out, and now will lead you out with him. God’s Son is crucified until you walk along the road with me.

My resurrection comes again each time I lead a brother safely to the place at which the journey ends and is forgot. I am renewed each time a brother learns there is a way from misery and pain. I am reborn each time a brother’s mind turns to the light in him and looks for me. I have forgotten no one. Jesus, our elder brother, knows that he is one with our Father and only Love is real. He can share our doubts and fears. Thus, because does not believe them, he can teach us using symbols we can understand to help us let go of our mistaken beliefs. He is part of our one Self, God’s one Son, and thus is in our mind, always available as our Counselor and Teacher. While we believe we are on our own, we need this help because our mistaken belief system denies the truth.

When we believe separation is real, the world we perceive is an image of the crucifixion of God’s Son. It denies the Life we live in God, offering an illusion of existence it calls “life.” With Jesus’ help as a channel of the Holy Spirit, we can undo our false beliefs and awaken to the Life we live in God — a Life of perfect Love, peace and joy.

Our Journey of Awakening

The teachers of God have no set teaching level. Each teaching-learning situation involves a different relationship at the beginning, although the ultimate goal is always the same; to make of the relationship a holy relationship, in which both can look upon the Son of God as sinless. There is no one from whom a teacher of God cannot learn, so there is no one whom he cannot teach.

…any level of the teaching-learning situation is part of God’s plan for Atonement, and His plan can have no levels, being a reflection of His Will. Salvation is always ready and always there. God’s teachers work at different levels, but the result is always the same.

Each teaching-learning situation is maximal in the sense that each person involved will learn the most that he can from the other person at that time.” (A Course in Miracles, M-3.1:1-3;3:5-4:1)

In every moment of every day we are presented with the opportunity to learn and teach that only Love is real. But if we are identified with a separate identity, we will teach separation and reinforce our own belief in separation. If we choose the Holy Spirit as our Interpreter of our perceptions, He will show us the Love that unites us beyond the perception of separation.

The more we practice maintaining a peaceful state of mind open to the Holy Spirit’s vision, the more we teach and learn the reality of Love’s oneness. This practice is the journey of awakening that leads ultimately to the recognition of our holiness as God’s Son. It excludes no one and nothing, for form is recognized as meaningless and Love is accepted as everything.

Remembering Only Love Is Real

It can be but myself I crucify.

When this is firmly understood and kept in full awareness, you will not attempt to harm yourself, nor make your body slave to vengeance. You will not attack yourself, and you will realize that to attack another is but to attack yourself. You will be free of the insane belief that to attack a brother saves yourself. And you will understand his safety is your own, and in his healing you are healed.

For once you understand it is impossible that you be hurt except by your own thoughts, the fear of God must disappear. You cannot then believe that fear is caused without.

When you realize, once and for all, that it is you you fear, the mind perceives itself as split. And this had been concealed while you believed attack could be directed outward, and returned from outside to within. It seemed to be an enemy outside you had to fear. And thus a god outside yourself became your mortal enemy; the source of fear.

When we see anyone as separate from us, we are attacking our brother and ourselves. We are attempting to limit our identity to a form that is separate from each other and our Creator. If we believe this is possible, we are afraid of God because we think we have stolen a piece of Him and claimed it as our own alone. Only our belief makes this seem to be true. But beliefs can be changed. With the Holy Spirit’s help, we can learn to see the eternal unity of the Love we share with every brother and with God.

Whenever we are tempted to judge another or defend against potential harm, we need to remind ourselves that this judgment or defense is self crucifixion. We are reinforcing the mistaken belief that we are separate and therefore maintaining a barrier against God’s Love. With this recognition, we open our mind to the Holy Spirit’s lessons in forgiveness and remember only Love is real.

Letting the Body Serve Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit’s curriculum is never depressing, because it is a curriculum of joy.

Learning must lead beyond the body to the re-establishment of the power of the mind in it. This can be accomplished only if the mind extends to other minds, and does not arrest [limit] itself in its extension.

You are not limited by the body, and thought cannot be made flesh.

When you see a brother as a body, you are condemning him because you have condemned yourself. Yet if all condemnation is unreal, and it must be unreal since it is a form of attack, then it can have no results [effects].

Freedom from illusions lies only in not believing them. There is no attack, but there is unlimited communication and therefore unlimited power and wholeness. The power of wholeness is extension. When we see anyone, a public figure, friend or ourself, as a body, we are condemning ourselves by limiting the mind to the illusion of a body. Since illusions appear real only because of our belief in them, withdrawing our belief in them frees us to be the unlimited mind we share with God.

The Holy Spirit’s lessons teach us to recognize illusions for what they are. Each time we learn His lesson we free ourselves from our belief in limitation. With practice, we let go of using the body to make separation seem real. We recognize the body has no value of its own and we no longer see it as our identity, nor do we see it as our brother’s identity.

Now it can be used solely as a device in the service of the Holy Spirit. It is used to communicate in the world the Holy Spirit’s lessons which teach us to see the unity of Love that joins everyone including ourselves with our Creator.

Listening to the Voice of Love

When truth has come it harbors in its wings the gift of perfect constancy, and love which does not falter in the face of pain, but looks beyond it, steadily and sure. Here is the gift of healing, for the truth needs no defense, and therefore no attack is possible. Illusions can be brought to truth to be corrected. But the truth stands far beyond illusions, and [truth] can not be brought to [illusions] to turn them into truth.

Truth does not come and go nor shift nor change…. Give truth its due, and it will give you yours. You were not meant to suffer and to die. Your Father wills these dreams be gone. Let truth correct them all.

It seems incredible that the body we identify with and the world we experience is nothing but illusion. Illusions are images that are made up and therefore not real. What we think of as our life is nothing more than illusions seemingly strung together over time in a dream.

Sometimes these dreams are happy yet transient at best. Even in our happy times we commonly “wait for the other shoe to drop.” We don’t believe that joy can last forever. And we believe that death is the only certainty we can count on. It does not seem that none of this is real.

Yet hidden by the dream remains the changeless truth that we remain Love as Love created us. Love’s joy and peace are ours now. This is our inheritance, given us in our Creation, never to be changed nor lost. The Truth in us is constantly calling to us to awaken from the dream of separation and death. It tells us that we are Love and nothing else.

We dedicate this day to listening to this call with willingness to see the truth beyond the dream. We are willing to awaken to Love because we want to awaken from the dream of denying Love.

The Joy of Extending Love

Let all things be exactly as they are.

Let me not be Your critic, Lord, today, and judge against You. Let me not attempt to interfere with Your creation, and distort it into sickly forms. Let me be willing to withdraw my wishes from its unity, and thus to let [creation] be as You created it. For thus will I be able, too, to recognize my Self as You created me. In love was I created, and in love will I remain forever. What can frighten me, when I let all things be exactly as they are?

Let not our sight be blasphemous today, nor let our ears attend to lying tongues. Only reality is free of pain. Only reality is free of loss. Only reality is wholly safe. When we believe that our brothers are bodies, we are judging against our Creator. We are attempting to limit God’s Love by substituting the image of a body for God’s extension of His limitless Love. The ego-made world is the effect of judging against God by wanting specialness instead of the unity of His Love. We are accepting the lies of the ego in place of the truth that only Love is real and this Love created us like Itself.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to help us see all things exactly as they are — Love and nothing else. As we accept this, there can be no pain, no sorrow, no fear, only the joy of extending Love.

Recognizing the Innocence in Every Brother

God is my life. I have no life but His.

I was mistaken when I thought I lived apart from God, a sepa­rate entity that moved in isolation, unattached, and housed within a body. Now I know my life is God’s, I have no other home, and I do not exist apart from Him. He has no Thoughts that are not part of me, and I have none but those which are of Him.

Our Father, let us see the face of Christ instead of our mistakes. For we who are Your holy Son are sinless. We would look upon our sinless­ness, for guilt proclaims that we are not Your Son. And we would not forget You longer. We are lonely here, and long for Heaven, where we are at home. Today we would return. Our Name is Yours, and we acknowledge that we are Your Son. The world we experience with the body is not our Home because we are not a body, we are Spirit. There are no limits to Spirit. In Spirit we remain united with our Creator, wholly loved and loving.

We only identify with the body when we believe separation is real. This belief blocks our awareness of our oneness with all in Spirit. It blocks our awareness of our true Self and imprisons us in a world of separation. But this world is only a dream that could never be true. It is a dream of loneliness, isolation and powerlessness, for it denies our eternal unity with the strength of God and the Love that surrounds us eternally.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit’s help to see the innocent face of Christ in every brother. As we accept this vision, we learn that we are Spirit, at Home in Heaven.
