Helping Our Awakening to Our True Self

Why would you not be overjoyed to be assured that all the evil that you think you did was never done, that all your sins are nothing, that you are as pure and holy as you were created, and that light and joy and peace abide in you? ²Your image of yourself cannot withstand the Will of God. ³You think that this is death, but it is life. ⁴You think you are destroyed, but you are saved.

The self you made is not the Son of God. ²Therefore, this self does not exist at all. ³And anything it seems to do and think means nothing. ⁴It is neither bad nor good. ⁵It is unreal, and nothing more than that.

Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God. ²Over and over this must be repeated, until it is accepted. ³It is true. ⁴Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God. ⁵Nothing can touch it, or change what God created as eternal. ⁶The self you made, evil and full of sin, is meaningless. ⁷Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God, and light and joy and peace abide in you.

²Should you be tempted to become angry with someone, tell him silently:

³Light and joy and peace abide in you.

There is no real cause for guilt. Only a false image we have made of ourself can seem to do harm. As we see ourself, we see our brothers. If we believe we can do harm, we believe our brothers can do harm. This is the ego’s dream we seem to live in.

Today we are called to change our mind about what we are. We are not the self that seems to harm or be harmed. In truth, Light, joy and peace abide in us. This is our natural state, which we experience when we forgive the false self-image we have made.

With today’s affirmation, we remind ourselves of the attributes of our true Self. In truth, Light, joy and peace can never leave us. As we affirm this for ourselves and for others, we facilitate our journey of awakening to the Self God created one with Him.

Learning from the Holy Instant

³The holy instant is the opposite of the ego’s fixed belief in salvation through vengeance for the past. ⁴In the holy instant it is understood that the past is gone, and with its passing the drive for vengeance has been uprooted and has disappeared. ⁵The stillness and the peace of _now_ enfold you in perfect gentleness. ⁶Everything is gone except the truth.

What God has given you is truly given, and will be truly received. ²For God’s gifts have no reality apart from your receiving them. ³Your receiving completes His giving. ⁴You will receive because it is His Will to give. ⁵He gave the holy instant to be given you, and it is impossible that you receive it not because He gave it. ⁶When He willed that His Son be free, His Son was free. ⁷In the holy instant is His reminder that His Son will always be exactly as he was created. ⁸And everything the Holy Spirit teaches is to remind you that you have received what God has given you.

There is nothing you can hold against reality. ²All that must be forgiven are the illusions you have held against your brothers. ³Their reality has no past, and only illusions can be forgiven. ⁴God holds nothing against anyone, for He is incapable of illusions of any kind. ⁵Release your brothers from the slavery of their illusions by forgiving them for the illusions you perceive in them. Vengeance is the ego’s version of salvation. It can only be justified if we believe the past is real. This belief is essential to maintain the seeming existence of the ego. It is why the ego’s world is filled with conflict for which it sees no end. In the history of the ego’s world, there has never been a time when there was no conflict.

The only way out of the ego’s recurring cycles of conflict is to learn that the past is not real. God has given us the holy instant in which we can experience the reality of peace where the past is gone. It cannot touch us. In that holy instant, we have forgiven the past and let the eternal presence of Love return to our awareness.

Forgiveness is our salvation from the ego’s world. It opens our awareness to the real world, where Love is recognized as all that is real. Today we welcome the Holy Spirit’s help to lead us to the holy instant in which we have forgiven an illusion of a past and accept the Reality of Love.

We Are Safe in God’s Hands

God holds your future as He holds your past and present. ²They are one to Him, and so they should be one to you. ³Yet in this world, the temporal progression still seems real. ⁴And so you are not asked to understand the lack of sequence really found in time. ⁵You are but asked to let the future go, and place it in God’s Hands. ⁶And you will see by your experience that you have laid the past and present in His Hands as well, because the past will punish you no more, and future dread will now be meaningless.

What worry can beset the one who gives his future to the loving Hands of God? ²What can he suffer? ³What can cause him pain, or bring experience of loss to him? ⁴What can he fear? ⁵And what can he regard except with love? ⁶For he who has escaped all fear of future pain has found his way to present peace, and certainty of care the world can never threaten.

Place, then, your future in the Hands of God. ²For thus you call the memory of Him to come again, replacing all your thoughts of sin and evil with the truth of love.

In this world it seems that our survival depends on planning for the future. But this planning is focused on survival of the body, which is not our true Self. Planning is an essential part of the ego’s scheme to distract us from remembering we are eternally safe in God’s Love.

We do not need to plan for our future. The future of our true Self is in the eternal now. We remain one with our Creator. In place of planning for the future we need to dedicate our time to taking the steps needed to awaken to the eternal present. The ego uses the past to plan for the future, completely overlooking the present.

The eternal present never changes. God is in the eternal present. There is no other moment in truth. When we forgive the past, our awareness of God’s Love now becomes clear. We rest in perfect safety when we trust ourselves to Him. He holds us safely in His Love. The changelessness of His Love is ours now. In gratitude we rest in His eternal peace.

Recognizing the Gift Every Moment Offers

²Neutral thoughts are impossible because all thoughts have power. ³They will either make a false world or lead me to the real one. ⁴But thoughts cannot be without effects. ⁵As the world I see arises from my thinking errors, so will the real world rise before my eyes as I let my errors be corrected. ⁶My thoughts cannot be neither true nor false. ⁷They must be one or the other. ⁸What I see shows me which they are.

²What I see witnesses to what I think. ³If I did not think I would not exist, because life is thought. ⁴Let me look on the world I see as the representation of my own state of mind. ⁵I know that my state of mind can change. ⁶And so I also know the world I see can change as well.

³I would look upon the witnesses that show me the thinking of the world has been changed. ⁴I would behold the proof that what has been done through me has enabled love to replace fear, laughter to replace tears, and abundance to replace loss. ⁵I would look upon the real world, and let it teach me that my will and the Will of God are one. The world we experience gives us constant feedback of our state of mind. If we see a world of lack and loss, fear and guilt, we are in a mental state of believing separation is real. The thought of separation needs to be forgiven. It appears in myriad forms. The Holy Spirit will help us forgive those forms and see past them to the Love that is the truth.

As we practice this forgiveness, we begin to recognize that all the forms have the same thing in common: They are not real.

The constant feedback we receive is increasingly recognized as a gift. It shows us where forgiveness is needed. As we accept help to forgive our mistaken thoughts, our minds are healed. We increasingly recognize Love in the world. Our joy increases and we rest in quietness, remembering we are safe in the Love of God.

Our Pilgrimage Back to God

We walk to God. ²Pause and reflect on this. ³Could any way be holier, or more deserving of your effort, of your love and of your full intent? ⁴What way could give you more than everything, or offer less and still content the holy Son of God? ⁵We walk to God. ⁶The truth that walks before us now is one with Him, and leads us to where He has always been. ⁷What way but this could be a path that you would choose instead?

Your feet are safely set upon the road that leads the world to God. ²Look not to ways that seem to lead you elsewhere. ³Dreams are not a worthy guide for you who are God’s Son. ⁴Forget not He has placed His Hand in yours, and given you your brothers in His trust that you are worthy of His trust in you. ⁵He cannot be deceived. ⁶His trust has made your pathway certain and your goal secure. ⁷You will not fail your brothers nor your Self.

And now He asks but that you think of Him a while each day, that He may speak to you and tell you of His Love, reminding you how great His trust; how limitless His Love. ²In your Name and His Own, which are the same, we practice gladly with this thought today:

Everyone in this world is seeking for Love. If we follow the ego as our guide, we wander in the wilderness where love cannot be found. But if we take the Hand of God to lead us, we are led Home to eternal Love.

We have been dreaming of a loveless world. But we have been given the means to awaken from the dream. Now we are on a pilgrimage that will return us home to Love. When we let Him lead the way, He speaks to us through the Truth in our brothers. As we see them truly, we see our one Self, united in the Love that created us. We are no longer deceived by appearances in the dream. We see the path ahead that leads us, together, to our Home in Love.

Clearing the Barriers to Love’s Light

…[God] wills the happiness His Son inherited of Him be undisturbed; eternal and forever gaining scope, eternally expanding in the joy of full creation, and eternally open and wholly limitless in Him.

⁴God does not perceive at all. ⁵Yet it is He Who gives the means by which perception is made true and beautiful enough to let the light of Heaven shine upon it.

These are the lessons God would have you learn. …They are the same in fundamental content. ⁶It is this:

⁷Forgive, and you will see this differently.

Certain it is that all distress does not appear to be but unforgiveness. ²Yet that is the content underneath the form. (A Course in Miracles, W-193.1:2;2:4-5;3:1,5-7;4:1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 193 Insights.)

The ego always emphasizes form and disregards its true content. In truth there is no content in form, so the ego gives the form meaning through its interpretation of perception. This process keeps us locked into the ego dream unless we accept the Holy Spirit’s help to forgive the ego’s interpretations of form.

When we forgive our interpretations in the world, what remains is the Light of Love, seen clearly as It Lights the world. This Light shows us that in fact we dwell in the eternal joy and peace of God’s Love. With forgiveness, forms are recognized as meaningless and nothing. As forms fade from our awareness, we recognize our unbreakable unity with our Creator.

Recognizing We Live in Love

[Trust] is the foundation on which [God’s teachers’] ability to fulfill their function rests. ²Perception is the result of learning. ³In fact, perception is learning, because cause and effect are never separated. ⁴The teachers of God have trust in the world, because they have learned it is not governed by the laws the world made up. ⁵It is governed by a power that is in them but not of them. ⁶It is this power that keeps all things safe. ⁷It is through this power that the teachers of God look on a forgiven world.

When this power has once been experienced, it is impossible to trust one’s own petty strength again. ²Who would attempt to fly with the tiny wings of a sparrow when the mighty power of an eagle has been given him? ³And who would place his faith in the shabby offerings of the ego when the gifts of God are laid before him? (A Course in Miracles, M-4.I.1:1–2:3)

The real world is governed by the laws of Love. It is the power of Love that keeps us safe because harm is impossible in Love’s oneness. This is the world we see when we forgive our wish for specialness.

As long as we perceive ourselves as an individual, different from others, we are unaware of the the real world. But we have the Holy Spirit in our mind to teach us how to transform this perception into the recognition of the Love in which we live. As we accept the Love we are, we release Its power to know our unity with all in Love. We see past forms to see everyone as one with our one Self.
