Make Way for Love to Guide

Knowledge is not the motivation for learning this course. ²Peace is. ³This is the prerequisite for knowledge only because those who are in conflict are not peaceful, and peace is the condition of knowledge because it is the condition of the Kingdom. ⁴Knowledge can be restored only when you meet its conditions.

…the ego has no power to distract you unless you give it the power to do so. ²The ego’s voice is an hallucination. ³You cannot expect it to say “I am not real.” ⁴Yet you are not asked to dispel your hallucinations alone. ⁵You are merely asked to evaluate them in terms of their results to you. ⁶If you do not want [the hallucinations] on the basis of loss of peace, they will be removed from your mind for you.

Your past learning must have taught you the wrong things, simply because it has not made you happy. ²On this basis alone its value should be questioned.

²You cannot learn simultaneously from two teachers who are in total disagreement about everything. ³Their joint curriculum presents an impossible learning task. ⁴They are teaching you entirely different things in entirely different ways, which might be possible except that both are teaching you about yourself. ⁵Your reality is unaffected by both, but if you listen to both, your mind will be split about what your reality is. In every moment we choose which teacher we would listen to. One teaches Love in an environment of perfect peace. The other denies Love and teaches hate and conflict.

This world is the effect of choosing to deny the oneness of Love. Lasting peace is impossible here. Though our experience in this world shows us that we have chosen the wrong teacher, we have not lost the Teacher God gave us in response to our mistaken choice.

The Holy Spirit is always in our mind, no matter how engaged we are in the ego’s dream. We can choose to pay attention to the ego by choosing peace. We step back from our engagement with the conflicts of the world. We rise above the battleground as we let the peace of God come forward. Peace is the nature of our true Self.

As we let peace step forward, the Holy Spirit’s guidance will teach us how to see beyond the world’s conflict. He will teach us to recognize they have no substance in truth so we can let them go. Our life becomes more peaceful as we let the Love of our true Self direct our thoughts and actions.

We choose peace today to make way for Love to guide our ways and awaken us to our Home in Love.

In Peace God’s Voice Is Clear

If you will lay aside the ego’s voice, however loudly it may seem to call; if you will not accept its petty gifts that give you nothing that you really want; if you will listen with an open mind, that has not told you what salvation is; then you will hear the mighty Voice of truth, quiet in power, strong in stillness, and completely certain in Its messages.

Listen, and hear your Father speak to you through His appointed Voice, which silences the thunder of the meaningless, and shows the way to peace to those who cannot see. ²Be still today and listen to the truth.

Be not afraid today to circumvent the voices of the world. ²Walk lightly past their meaningless persuasion. ³Hear them not. ⁴Be still today and listen to the truth. ⁵Go past all things which do not speak of Him Who holds your happiness within His Hand, held out to you in welcome and in love. ⁶Hear only Him today, and do not wait to reach Him longer. ⁷Hear one Voice today. Behind all the things we think we want in the world is our call to return to Love. The answer to this call cannot be found in the world. It only offers the ego’s empty substitutes for Love that shine with the glitter of specialness. They seem to satisfy temporarily but soon fade, for the ego’s offerings are illusions that have no substance.

All we really want is to remember the Love God has already given us. Being still is the means to connect with this Love. Let the peace of God within rise to the surface and bless our mind. In this peace God’s Voice is clear. It leads us to recognize the presence of Love in which we live.

Today we practice stilling our mind to welcome the peace of God and let His Voice speak to us of the Life we live in God.

Following the Call to Joy

I will receive whatever I request.

No one desires pain. ²But he can think that pain is pleasure. ³No one would avoid his happiness. ⁴But he can think that joy is painful, threatening and dangerous. ⁵Everyone will receive what he requests. ⁶But he can be confused indeed about the things he wants; the state he would attain. ⁷What can he then request that he would want when he receives it? ⁸He has asked for what will frighten him, and bring him suffering. ⁹Let us resolve today to ask for what we really want, and only this, that we may spend this day in fearlessness, without confusing pain with joy, or fear with love.

Father, this is Your day. ²It is a day in which I would do nothing by myself, but hear Your Voice in everything I do; requesting only what You offer me, accepting only Thoughts You share with me. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 339, W-339. See also ACIM Lesson 339 Insights.)

We have a Guide in our mind Whose sole purpose is to lead us to the perfect happiness God wills we have. Only His joy will satisfy us, His Son.

The ego is unwilling to accept God’s equal gift of joy to all. It wanted more than everything. It was a request that God change the oneness of Love He is. When we identify with the ego, we make that same request. We ask for what God cannot give and receive instead the ego’s dream of specialness. It seems to offer us things that will make us happy. Yet it all comes without Love because Love is given equally to all. The loveless world will never satisfy though it can give appearances we like and that seem to give us pleasure and happiness. Yet without Love, it is an empty and meaningless shell.

Today we choose to follow the Voice for God. His Voice will lead us to everything we truly want. It will lead us to the unlimited Love of God, the Home of our true Self. His Voice is a call to joy and peace. It is a call to awaken to the Love we share with every brother that never ends. This is all we really want.

The Search That Leads to All That Is Real

All idols of this world were made to keep the truth within from being known to you, and to maintain allegiance to the dream that you must find what is outside yourself to be complete and happy. ²It is vain to worship idols in the hope of peace. ³God dwells within, and your completion lies in Him. ⁴No idol takes His place. ⁵Look not to idols. ⁶Do not seek outside yourself.

Let us forget the purpose of the world the past has given it. ²For otherwise, the future will be like the past, and but a series of depressing dreams, in which all idols fail you, one by one, and you see death and disappointment everywhere.

To change all this, and open up a road of hope and of release in what appeared to be an endless circle of despair, you need but to decide you do not know the purpose of the world.

⁵Let [God] remind you of His Love for you, and do not seek to drown His Voice in chants of deep despair to idols of yourself. ⁶Seek not outside your Father for your hope. ⁷For hope of happiness is not despair. (A Course in Miracles, T-29.VII.6:1–8:1;10:5-7. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

If we were to accept the certainty of God’s Love for us, there would be no need for hope. We would know that we have all that we need in God’s Love. We would know that we are safe and that God’s eternal Life is ours.

To reach this certainty, we need to accept the Holy Spirit’s help to let go of our misplaced allegiance to the ego’s wish for specialness. The search for more than everything is a path of seeking but not finding. This search is guaranteed to lead to despair and dissatisfaction. But with the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we are led to where we find the only thing we need — God’s Love. Nothing else exists. His Love is our Home, our happiness and our peace.

Now Is the Time to Accept God’s Gift

Problems are not specific but they take specific forms, and these specific shapes make up the world. ²And no one understands the nature of his problem. ³If he did, [the problem] would be there no more for him to see. ⁴Its very nature is that it is not [there]. ⁵And thus, while he perceives it he can not perceive it as it is. ⁶But healing is apparent in specific instances, and generalizes to include them all. ⁷This is because they really are the same, despite their different forms.

Your healing will extend, and will be brought to problems that you thought were not your own. ²And it will also be apparent that your many different problems will be solved as any one of them has been escaped.

Peace be to you to whom is healing offered. ²And you will learn that peace is given you when you accept the healing for yourself. …⁴What occurred within the instant that love entered in without attack will stay with you forever. ⁵Your healing will be one of its effects, as will your brother’s. ⁶Everywhere you go, will you behold its multiplied effects. …⁸Infinity cannot be understood by merely counting up its separate parts. ⁹God thanks you for your healing, for He knows it is a gift of love unto His Son, and therefore is it given unto Him. We are not responsible for our healing. That is the Holy Spirit’s function. But we are responsible to being willing to turn over all our perceived problems and accept the Holy Spirit’s healing lessons. This is a daily practice that leads us out of the ego’s loveless world intro the reality of God’s changeless Love. The process of the Holy Spirit’s healing curriculum is to teach us that we do not want to be limited to a body as our identity. It literally offers us nothing, for it is not real.

The Holy Spirit’s lessons lead us to accept our true Identity as God’s Son in the unity of his Love. We are led from a world of lack and loss to God’s universe of unlimited, eternal Love. God gave His Son this gift in his creation. It is ours to accept now.

Learning to See Love’s Presence Everywhere

The Holy Spirit cannot punish sin. ²Mistakes He recognizes, and would correct them all as God entrusted Him to do. ³But sin He knows not, nor can He recognize mistakes that cannot be corrected. ⁴For a mistake that cannot be corrected is meaningless to Him. ⁵Mistakes are for correction, and they call for nothing else. ⁶What calls for punishment must call for nothing. ⁷Every mistake must be a call for love. ⁸What, then, is sin? ⁹What could it be but a mistake you would keep hidden; a call for help that you would keep unheard and thus unanswered?

In time, the Holy Spirit clearly sees the Son of God can make mistakes. ²On this you share His vision. ³Yet you do not share His recognition of the difference between time and eternity. ⁴And when correction is completed, time is eternity. ⁵The Holy Spirit can teach you how to look on time differently and see beyond it, but not while you believe in sin. ⁶In error, yes, for this can be corrected by the mind. ⁷But sin is the belief that your perception is unchangeable…

When you are tempted to believe that sin is real, remember this: If sin is real, both God and you are not.

The continuation of our belief in the permanency of separation (sin) depends upon our belief that the body is our identity. If the oneness of Love is real, individual bodies cannot be. This is the basis for the Holy Spirit’s lessons that free us from the bondage of the ego. He teaches us that our perceptions through the body are mistakes to be corrected.

The belief in unchangeable sin is the ego’s attempt to substitute for eternity. If sin cannot be corrected, separation is real and we are condemned to a loveless world. The best the ego can offer is special relationships as a substitute for the eternal Love of God. We seek for special partners, special status, special groups and myriad special identities. Our specialness needs constant defense against outside forces that threaten it. The one thing specialness cannot offer is the unity of changeless Love.

God gave us His Voice to teach us that sin is nothing more than a mistake to be corrected. His Voice leads us to correct our misperceptions and bring healing to our fear-based thoughts. Under His tutelage we learn to overlook the body’s limitations and see the presence of Love everywhere. He guides us on our journey of awakening to Love.

How to Make Our Relationships Holy

To forgive is merely to remember only the loving thoughts you gave in the past, and those that were given you. ²All the rest must be forgotten. ³Forgiveness is a selective remembering, based not on your selection. ⁴For the shadow figures you would make immortal are “enemies” of reality. ⁵Be willing to forgive the Son of God for what he did not do. ⁶The shadow figures are the witnesses you bring with you to demonstrate he did what he did not. ⁷Because you bring them, you will hear them. ⁸And you who keep them by your own selection do not understand how they came into your mind, and what their purpose is. ⁹[The shadow figures] represent the evil that you think was done to you. ¹⁰You bring them with you only that you may return evil for evil, hoping that their witness will enable you to think guiltily of another and not harm yourself. ¹¹They speak so clearly for the separation that no one not obsessed with keeping separation could hear them. ¹²They offer you the “reasons” why you should enter into unholy alliances to support the ego’s goals, and make your relationships the witness to its power.

³Without exception, these relationships have as their purpose the exclusion of the truth about the other, and of yourself.

How can the Holy Spirit bring His interpretation of the body as a means of communication into relationships whose only purpose is separation from reality? ²What forgiveness is enables Him to do so. ³If all but loving thoughts have been forgotten, what remains is eternal. ⁴And the transformed past is made like the present. …⁸That is why Atonement centers on the past, which is the source of separation, and where it must be undone. ⁹For separation must be corrected where it was made. The ego uses time to make separation seem real. It retains ‘memories’ of the past yet tells us that the past cannot be changed. It deals with this conundrum by projecting the past onto present relationships. The guilt harbored in memories of the past is thus assigned to the perceived ‘other’ in the relationship. This allows the ego to assign guilt on the ‘other’ as a means of relieving its own guilt. Yet the guilt is not relieved but only hidden out of consciousness.

The Holy Spirit uses time for a different purpose. He helps us look at the memories from the past and remember only the loving thoughts. By forgiving, or letting go of the unloving thoughts, the relationship is purified of the ego’s projections from the past. Only Love is remembered now; the unloving thoughts harbored in the past are forgotten. We recognize the Love that is our brother and our Self. We remember together the oneness of Love and awaken with him in God’s Love.
