Love’s Guarantee of Lasting Happiness

A happy outcome to all things is sure.

God’s promises make no exceptions. And He guarantees that only joy can be the final outcome found for everything. Yet it is up to us when this is reached; how long we let an alien will appear to be opposing His. And while we think this will is real, we will not find the end He has appointed as the outcome of all problems we perceive, all trials we see, and every situation that we meet. Yet is the ending certain. For God’s Will is done in earth and Heaven. We will seek and we will find according to His Will, which guarantees that our will is done.

We thank You, Father, for Your guarantee of only happy outcomes in the end. Help us not interfere, and so delay the happy endings You have promised us for every problem that we can perceive; for every trial we think we still must meet. Happiness is an attribute of God’s Love. The ego, in its quest for specialness, denies the oneness of Love. Everything the ego directs us to do is guaranteed to disappoint. Because our true Self is part of God’s Love, seeking anything separate from Love is meaningless. It accomplishes nothing, disguised in illusions of forms. Seeking status, a relationship with another body, possessions we can call our own, can never bring us lasting happiness.

God has given us the Guide we need to lead us out of meaningless quests on a path that leads to awakening to the true Love we are. Following this Guide is guaranteed to bring us happiness because It leads us back to the Source of happiness.

Today we practice stepping back from our self-made goals by focusing on the peace of God within us. In this peace we welcome the lead of His Guide. It directs us to overlook the meaningless pursuits of the ego to see the Light of Love that we would recognize as our true Self. The Holy Spirit will lead us on the path to lasting happiness and awaken to the Home we never left in truth.

Listen to the Voice That Guides Us to Love

Only God’s plan for salvation will work.

All things are possible to God. Salvation must be yours because of His plan, which cannot fail.

Ask Him very specifically:

What would You have me do?
Where would You have me go?
What would You have me say, and to whom?

Give Him full charge of [your life], and let Him tell you what needs to be done by you in His plan for your salvation. He will answer in proportion to your willingness to hear His Voice. The only Source of power there is supports our release from the ego’s attempt to limit our identity in a loveless world. This Help is ever present in our mind, available in every instant to guide us back to Love. We need only be willing to listen to His Voice instead of the ego’s directions. It’s directions always direct us on a fruitless search to find freedom from fear and guilt where it cannot be found. The ego’s goal is to avoid God’s Love, even unto death. But if we are willing to hear God’s Voice, we will be guided step by step to return to Love.

In the world it seems that problems that interfere with our peace of mind abound. They stand as barriers against Love. His Voice offers specific solutions to our perceived problems that show us there is really only one problem and one solution.

The problem is accepting the ego’s belief in separation. The solution is learning to see that only Love is real, and we are that Love, now and forever. Each solution accepted brings us closer to the experience of deep peace, indescribable joy and Love without limit. We awaken to our Home in the Heart of God.

Following the Path to Peace of Mind

First, [the teacher of God] must go through what might be called “a period of undoing.” This need not be painful, but it usually is so experienced. It seems as if things are being taken away, and it is rarely understood initially that their lack of value is merely being recognized. How can lack of value be perceived unless the perceiver is in a position where he must see things in a different light?

…the teacher of God [must] understand that he did not really know what was valuable and what was valueless. All that he really learned so far was that he did not want the valueless, and that he did want the valuable. Yet his own sorting out was meaningless in teaching him the difference. The idea of sacrifice, so central to his own thought system, had made it impossible for him to judge. …He must learn to lay all judgment aside, and ask only what he really wants in every circumstance.

…[tranquility is] the outcome of honest learning, consistency of thought and full transfer. This is the stage of real peace, for here is Heaven’s state fully reflected. (A Course in Miracles, M-4.I.A.1:1-4;7:2-5,8;8:4-5)

It does seem difficult to accept that nothing in the world we experience has any value. But we are not asked to make this seemingly giant leap of faith. Instead we are asked to be willing to relinquish our judgments about everything in the world to the Holy Spirit’s judgment.

The Holy Spirit is our key to freedom from the ego’s misperceptions that bring us fear and guilt. When we are willing to ask the Holy Spirit to judge every perception on our behalf, we are led on a journey to peace of mind.

With each judgment relinquished to the Holy Spirit, the Love of God flows more freely into our separated mind. The shadows of Love’s denial fade in Its Light. Our lives become increasingly peaceful and happy. The uncertainty and guilt that seem to dominate our daily experience fade as we increasingly see each day as an opportunity to accept and extend Love. Today we ask the Holy Spirit to be the judge of all our perceptions, for we would find the way to God’s Love.

Restoring Our Mind to Love

Hear, holy Son of God, your Father speak. His Voice would give to you His holy Word, to spread across the world the tidings of salvation and the holy time of peace. We gather at the throne of God today, the quiet place within the mind where He abides forever, in the holiness that He created and will never leave.

He has not waited until you return your mind to Him to give His Word to you. He has not hid Himself from you, while you have wandered off a little while from Him. He does not cherish the illusions which you hold about yourself. He knows His Son, and wills that he remain as part of Him regardless of his dreams; regardless of his madness that his will is not his own.

Today He speaks to you. His Voice awaits your silence, for His Word can not be heard until your mind is quiet for a while, and meaningless desires have been stilled. Await His Word in quiet. There is peace within you to be called upon today, to help make ready your most holy mind to hear the Voice for its Creator speak. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 125, W-pI.125.4-6. Our true Mind is in the Mind of God, at one with Him eternally. We remember our connection with Him by going to the peace within. Our connection with God is eternal and unbreakable. To hear His Voice guide us in the way of Love, we need only welcome His gift of peace.

In the quietness of His Love, His Voice tells us of the strength given us by God. It reminds us of our safety in Him. It shines the Light of Love on the images we see in the world so that we can see past the forms to the Love that is present everywhere and in everything.

An early workbook lesson instructs us to tell ourselves, “God is in that table or chair.” It is not about the form but about seeing what is beyond the form, changeless and unlimited. No matter what images we conjure with the ego, Love is still present. As we focus in the peace within, His Voice guides us to let go of the barriers to Love’s presence we have believed were real. As the barriers are released, our mind is restored to the oneness of Love.

God’s Love Is Our Only Treasure

As the ego would limit your perception of your brothers to the body, so would the Holy Spirit release your vision and let you see the Great Rays shining from them, so unlimited that they reach to God. It is this shift [from perception] to vision that is accomplished in the holy instant.

Our task is but to continue, as fast as possible, the necessary process of looking straight at all the interference and seeing it exactly as it is. For it is impossible to recognize as wholly without gratification what you think you want. The body is the symbol of the ego, as the ego is the symbol of the separation. And both are nothing more than attempts to limit communication, and thereby to make it impossible. For communication must be unlimited in order to have meaning, and deprived of meaning, it will not satisfy you completely. Yet it remains the only means by which you can establish real relationships, which have no limits, having been established by God.

Love would always give increase. Limits are demanded by the ego, and represent its demands to make little and ineffectual. Limit your sight of a brother to his body, which you will do as long as you would not release him from it, and you have denied his gift to you. His body cannot give it. And seek it not through yours. Yet your minds are already continuous, and their union need only be accepted and the loneliness in Heaven is gone. (A Course in Miracles, T-15.IX.1:1-2;2;4:2-7. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Only Love is real. It extends forever without limit. Communication could be described as the undivided and unlimited flow of Love to Love. This flow continues unabated, whether or not we choose to deny Love, as the ego does. The only barrier that seems to stand between us and God’s unlimited Love is our identification with the ego’s denial of Love.

This denial needs to be undone to enable us to know the limitless Love we are. The ego would have us waste time on meaningless pursuits for its substitutes for love tied to perception of the body. The body is a limit. It cannot offer Love, for it is the symbol of the denial of Love.

If we are willing to reconsider our attachment to the ego and body, the Holy Spirit can help us see beyond the ego’s limits. His vision offers us the means to experience the unity of Love. His lessons will show us that the body offers nothing of value. We will learn that our treasure is in the Love we are, united with every brother and God. Here we find peace and happiness. We are free from fear and guilt. We are free to be as Love created us.

Changing Our Mind to Accept Our True Self

[“I am spirit”] identifies you with your one Self. It accepts no split identity, nor tries to weave opposing factors into unity. It simply states the truth. Practice this truth today as often as you can, for it will bring your mind from conflict to the quiet fields of peace.

You are the spirit lovingly endowed with all your Father’s Love and peace and joy. You are the spirit which completes Himself, and shares His function as Creator.

He will offer all His strength to every little effort that you make. Give Him the min­utes which He needs today, to help you understand with Him you are the spirit that abides in Him, and that calls through His Voice to every living thing; offers His sight to everyone who asks; replaces error with the simple truth.

Spirit am I, a holy Son of God, free of all limits, safe and healed and whole, free to forgive, and free to save the world.

This lesson describes a Self most of us do not identify with. It’s as if our name were Paul, but if someone across the room called out, “Hi Peter,” we would not respond to the call. God is calling to us to our true Self and we are ignoring the call while we believe we are a body in the dream of separation. We need to change the “name” of what we believe we are. We are Spirit, united with all Spirit. This is our true Identity. It is an Identity eternally at peace and joyously extending the Love that created us.

The practice of reminding ourselves, “I am Spirit,” helps our mind change the identity we believe we are. We don’t have to go to a court of law to change our name. We only need to change our mind about what we believe we are to accept our true Self. We are Spirit, one with All That Is.

Awaken from Time to the Timelessness of Love

Your Self retains Its Thoughts, and they remain within your mind and in the Mind of God. The Holy Spirit holds salvation in your mind, and offers it the way to peace. Salvation is a thought you share with God, because His Voice accepted it for you and answered in your name that it was done.

Salvation comes from this one Self through Him Who is the Bridge between your mind and It. Wait patiently, and let Him speak to you about your Self, and what your mind can do, restored to It and free to serve Its Will.

Begin with saying this:

Salvation comes from my one Self. Its Thoughts are mine to use.

Your Self will welcome [your mind] and give it peace. Re­stored in strength, it will again flow out from spirit to the spirit in all things created by the Spirit as Itself. Your mind will bless all things. Confusion done, you are restored, for you have found your Self. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 96, W-pI.96.7:1-3;8:3-9:3;10:2-5. The ego is always impatient. Time is one of its principal mechanisms for making separation seem real. In its thought system, time is wasted if we are not doing “something.” Its only use for time is to retain illusionary memories of the past, which it uses to cover over the eternal Present and project a future like the past. The ego never wants us to wait patiently to hear the Voice of God. Impatience is its defense against the timelessness of Love.

In this world the Holy Spirit uses time for a different purpose. When we are willing to pause and wait patiently to receive His guidance, we are led on a joyful journey of awakening. We are guided to remember the one and only Thought we share with God—the Thought of Love. This is our awakening to salvation. Acceptance of Love is acceptance of timelessness. It frees us from the ego’s tyranny of time and its thought system of separation.

Let’s use time today for the Holy Spirit’s purpose by pausing frequently to listen for His Voice and let the Thought of Love be restored to our mind.
