Seeing the Face of Christ Beyond the Masks

The teachers of God appear to share the illusion of separation, but because of what they use the body for, they do not believe in the illusion despite appearances.… Awareness of dreaming is the real function of God’s teachers. They watch the dream figures come and go, shift and change, suffer and die. Yet they are not deceived by what they see. They recognize that to behold a dream figure as sick and separate is no more real than to regard it as healthy and beautiful. Unity alone is not a thing of dreams. And it is this God’s teachers acknowledge as behind the dream, beyond all seeming and yet surely theirs. (A Course in Miracles M-12.4:6,6:6-11)

The images the body’s eyes show us seem very real. Yet they are all simply masks that hide the unity of the face of Christ. These masks seem to interact and have effects on each other. Yet the changelessness of Christ behind the mask remains unaffected. It is when we believe that these masks (images) have real effects that we feel vulnerable and guilty. It is this belief that must be undone.

Our job now is to learn that the masks are really nothing and can have no effect. To learn this freeing lesson, we need to be willing to be taught by the Teacher That does not believe in these masks. Our practice today is to hold our minds and hearts open to our inner Teacher’s lessons that will help us see the face of Christ beyond the meaningless masks.
