Laughter Is the Best Medicine

“The ego has never given you a sensible answer to anything.” (T-8.II.2:4) This was a line in the reading for discussion at a recent Sunday ACIM Study Group Meeting, in the section titled, “The Difference between Imprisonment and Freedom.”

When it was read, at first I smiled, then I heard myself laugh out loud! This was followed by a breakthrough: I saw exactly how VERY seriously I have always taken everything, and I mean everything — my responsibilities, my duties, the Course, doing-the-right-thing, decisions, life and its challenges, etc., etc.

Then I saw very clearly all the anger and judgements that come with holding that position. In that holy instant, the truth in that sentence radiated very brightly. It cracked open my self-imposed prison, and revealed the Light.

An Extraordinary Opportunity

Every time I see someone as if this is the only moment of their existence, I am undoing the separation. I see that one as they are now and without a past, and that is a miracle. It is a miracle of true perception and a miracle of healing brought into the world. If I see my child as if a moment ago doesn’t exist, he is pure in my mind. If I do that for you, you become pure in my mind. Now you are the same. If I have done it for me, then we are all three the same. The miracle has helped me to know that we are all aspects of the One. We are each whole and each part of the Whole.

As I do this in the world, I have accomplished forgiveness in its truest sense. I have accepted the Atonement. This is my gift to the world, this deliberate choice to use Christ vision to bring Light into a darkened world.

The Student

When I first picked up A Course in Miracles, I did not know it was a book about learning to be honest with myself. I thought I was a “good” person and was unaware I had chosen to deceive mySelf. In fact, I did not know that I did not know my Self.

I was clueless that any pain I had experienced was a symbol of the fear and guilt thoughts I was not able to acknowledge in the Mind. The idea that people who hurt me or circumstances that were “awful” did not exist was insulting to my sensibilities.  To accept that I could not be a victim anytime was preposterous. The only thing I did know was I wanted the suffering to stop, and I was willing to consider new ideas that brought relief.

The Ocean of the Mind

In the place where “I” arises, in the ocean of the mind,
Where the ego’s dark disguises for a moment fall behind,
And the wisdom that we cherish, is wrapped up and pushed across 
On the waters of awareness to a river where it’s tossed
Like an anchor, gently sinking, on a chain that has been cut,
Now perceived, a distant twinkling, where a ladder does abut—

In the ocean of the mind, there’s a ladder you can find.

In the silence, like a diamond, shining brightly in the heart,
Where the spirit knows no crime and all illusions fall apart,
And the meaning of a minute is dissolving like the hands
Of the paint upon a portrait in a Dali-painted land.
Past and future have no meaning, only timelessness abides,
Here the Spirits are convening, in His glory, they collide—

In the ocean of the Mind, where the body’s left behind.
